Members of MCC of OGS and visitors to this site have submitted a variety of announcements such as marriages, births, special events, reunions, etc. that were important to families and individuals of the period. Such items are listed here by the name of the key individuals involved and by date. You are invited to submit similar items for posting. Items submitted are posted as they are received, by the year of their occurrence. There are several ways that you can locate items of possible interest. Birth Jaime Lynn Ackerman

    Mr. and Mrs. John Ackerman, of Woodsfield, Route 3, announce the birth of a daughter on Friday, December 3rd in Ohio Valley General Hospital, Wheeling, West Virginia. The new arrival weighed seven pounds, one ounce, and has been named Jaime Lynn. Mrs. Ackerman is the former Miss Barbara Miller. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Lester Ackerman, of Woodsfield-Lewisville Road, and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Miller, of Route 3, Woodsfield. The great

grandmother is Mrs. Dan Harkins, of Canton, Ohio.

    Mr. and Mrs. Mark Ackerman, of Route 4, Woodsfield, announce the birth of their first child, a daughter, on December 30 at Bellaire City Hospital. The new arrival weighed seven pounds, fourteen ounces, and has been named Michele Ann. Mrs. Ackerman is the former Miss Edith Richter, of Route 2, Sardis. Grandparents are Mrs. and Mrs. Ralph Richter, of Route 2, Sardis, and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ackerman, of Woodsfield.  Great grandmothers are Mrs. Martha Smith, of Route 2, Sardis; Mrs. W. T. Ackerman, and Mrs. Lydia Reed, of Route 4 Woodsfield. The great great grandmother is Mrs. Ella Kernen, of Route 1

    Mr. and Mrs. Clarence J. Ackerman, of Somerton, Ohio, announce the birth of a daughter on Thursday, February 5th, at Ohio Valley General Hospital, Wheeling, West Virginia. The new arrival weighed six pounds, twelve ounces, and has been named Lynette Ann. Mrs. Ackerman is the former Miss Eileen Regina Block. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Francis L. Block, of Woodsfield, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence H. Ackerman, of Somerton. The great grandmother is Mrs. Estella Yeagle, of North Braddock, Pennsylvania. Lynette Ann has a sister, Kimberly, and a brother, Joseph.

Frank Albert Sowers and Anna Lora (Vogel) Sowers

COUPLE TO MARK 71 WEDDED YEARS

(Cortland, [Nebraska]) Residents of Cortland for the past 49 years, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sowers will be observing their 71st wedding anniversary on March 14.

Mr. and Mrs. Sowers were married March 14, 1906. Last year, on their 70th anniversary, more than 150 persons helped them celebrate. But this year they say they plan to mark the special day quietly at home.

Sowers, who will be 90 on March 10, formerly worked for the board of education in Lincoln. He is the last surviving member of the builders of the Congregational Church.

Mrs. Sowers does her own housework, cooking and baking. She will have her 88th birthday on March 13.

Matz, Harry Jacob and Clara Hoff Matz

The Matz's Harry and Clara were united in marriage, August 30, 1930, by Rev. Edward Brueske. Their son, Wilfred and wife, of Dalton will host a reception in their honor, Sunday, August 31, [1980] at The Rebekah Lodge Hall from 2 to 4.All friends and relatives are invited.

They have four grandchildren, Donnie of Apple Creek, Mrs. Donis (Linda) Kirk of Orville, Tim of Orville and Carol Ann of Wooster.

One great-granddaughter , Lisa Kirk, completes the family circle.

Herlan, John Eldon Herlan

John E. Herlan submitted a sketch on the Herlan family that was printed in 1980 in A COLLECTION OF TOPICAL & FAMILY SKETCHES by the Washington County Historical Society, p 190. The following is only a small portion of the article.

"The ancestors of John E. Herlan came to this country from Germany in the early 1840's. Jacob Herlan was from a family of seven. Four brothers remained in Germany and three--Virgil, John and Jacob came to America. . . .

"Myself, John E. Herlan married Sue Hoff, daughter of Fred D. Hoff and Hazel Dearth Hoff in 1960. We have two daughters, Lori and Johnna Sue who attend Newport Elementary School. Our home is in Newport. My family is active in sports and 4-H work. Quaker State Oil Refinery of St. Mary's, W.Va. is my place of employment and at present I'm also a Newport Township trustee. Sue is an elementary school teacher. We are members of the Church of Christ."

MARRIAGE of Timothy W. Stimpert and Angie Pfalzgraf

    On January 23, 1982, Angie Pfalzgraf became the bride of Timothy W. Stimpert at the home of the bride s grandmother, Mrs. D. L. Harkins of Caldwell, Ohio.
    The bride is the daughter of Jack and Shirley Pfalzgraf of Lewisville, Ohio. The bridegroom is the son of Robert and Shirley Stimpert, also of Lewisville.
    Sheldon Blair of Marietta performed the double-ring ceremony. Stacey Lucas, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. Darrell Stimpert, brother of the groom, was best man.
    The bride wore ivory lace floor-length gown with an ivory veil styled by the matron of honor. The matron of honor wore a peach colored floor-length gown accented with white lace. Both carried bouquets of peach roses, white daisy mums, white spider mums, and baby s breath.
    Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held.
    The bride is a senior at Skyvue High School. The groom is a 1981 graduate of Skyvue High School, Graysville, Ohio, and Swiss Hills Vocational School,
Woodsfield, Ohio. After a short wedding trip to Marietta, the couple now resides at Route 2, Lewisville, Ohio

Matz, Willie  and Nellie (Morris) Matz

    Mr. and Mrs. Willie Matz, 1011 Orange Street, Ashland, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with Open House, November 6, at the Union Hall on Orange Street from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
    Nellie Morris and Willie Matz were married November 8, 1933 in Woodsfield, by Squire Cronin, Justice of the Peace.
    They are the parents of Walter, of Mansfield, Clyde of Polk,and Normalee Wilson and Bertha Cranmore of Ashland. They also have 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.  Mr. Matz is retired from Eagle Rubber Company.

Jerry and Edward Zimmerman

Jerry and Edward Zimmerman of Phoenix recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house hosted by their family at the American Legion Post No. 2 in Tempe.

The Zimmermans were married Nov. 24, 1934, in New Cumberland, W.Va.

They have six children: Nancy Cain, Cindi DeForrest, Dale and Jim, all of Phoenix; Darrell, Glendale; and Jerri Lynn Hancock, Oceanside, Calif. They also have 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Edward Zimmerman retired in 1977 as a plumber for the Phoenix Union High School District.

    A  baby boy was born March 6th at 4:50 a.m. to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Alan Matz, 286 West Cardinal Street, Wheeling, West Virginia at the Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling.
    The baby weighed 7 lbs. 10 ozs. and has been named Gregory Alan Matz.
    Maternal grandmother is Mrs. Andrew J. (June) Niehaus of Wheeling and Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Matz of Chillicothe, Ohio.
    The new baby has a 2 yr. old sister, Laura June Matz.
    Miss Thelma Matz and Mrs. Sarah Borns of 310 N. Main St., Woodsfield are Great aunts of the children.

Anniversary

 

Herlans celebrating 60th

Mr.and Mrs. Joseph R. Herlan of Newport Rt. 1 will be the guests of honor at an open house celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

The event will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at their home. Friends and relatives are invited to attend.

The couple was married Sept. 11, 1926, at Marietta. She is the former Edith Eddy, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Eddy of Archers Fork, and he is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John A. Herlan of Schley.

Herlan is a retired employee of Quaker State Oil Refining at St. Marys, W.Va.

They are the parents of six children: Mrs. Carl (Helen) Farson of Ravenna, Mich.; Mrs. Lloyd (Donna) Hearn of Jenison, Mich.; John and Neil, both of Newport; and two sons, Robert and Lowell, who are deceased. They also have 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
