ADAMS

Suzanne Adams 1633 SW Gemini Lane,

Port St. Lucie, FL 34984

TeacherG4@aol.com

I am a descendent of James Adams born on or about 1833in VA and moved to Monroe County, OHIO before 1855.  Both his parents are from Ireland.  His parents names are James Adams and Sarah Adams.  The aforementioned James married Anna or Hanna Sykes or Six of PA or OH.  Their children according to the 1860 and 1870 censuses are:  Sarah L, David N, Marshal V, Ruth A, Cora J, James, Ellwood or Ellsworth, William, and Ode J.

Sarah L became Sarah McDonald, and Ruth A Became Ruth Stevens.

This family moved to Sedalia, MO shortly after the civil war and are found in the 1870 census in FLat Creek.  In the 1880 census the parents cannot be found and all the children are either on their own, married, and the minor children are living with relatives.  My guess is that a tragedy befell this family and both mother and father were killed and all the children were forced to fare on their own and rely on other family until they were old enough to become independent.  If something did happen to the family, it should be recorded somewhere.  Maybe in old newspapers or records in your library.

In the 1880 census Ode Jane Adams resides with  an aunt Lutitia Morrow and William Adams resides with his grandmother.  David, Marshall (M.V.) and Ellsworth (E.M.) are all loggers in Montana in 1880.  It is obvious that the family met with some tragedy where both parents died of disease, or were injured and possibly were killed.

Any assistance figuring out what happened to this family and why the children were separated and living with relatives would be greatly appreciated.

I would like information on Matilda Baker Mercer b.1841, Calais, Monroe County, Ohio; d. 1901 in Calais and her two illegitimate sons, John W. Stephen "Mercer" b.1876 m. Alice Hayes; b. 1883; d. 1941;m.(2) Dessie ?; b. abt. 1876 -and-my great grandfather, William Henry Stephen "Mercer",b.1878 d.1974; m. Clara Hayes,1901; b. 1882 d.1954. Matilda married George Mercer but had children with three other men after his death. I heard from a good source that she was raped as a teen. George Mercer, her only husband, (at least we think they were married) died in the civil war. She kept the Mercer name until her death. Was she a descendant of Captain John Baker the Indian fighter? Rumor has it that her son John went to the Ohio penitentiary for involuntary manslaughter for killing a man that tried to steal his horse. How can I find court a record of this or prove that it is true? I know that I am asking a lot. If you could find anything, I would be so very happy! Kristi

BAKER

Erin T. Crowe

poetrywaif@yahoo.com

I am not sure if you can answer my question, but maybe so.  My great grandfather George Perry Baker, lived in Ohio. He was born around 1890. His parents were born in Pennsylvania (or so it says on the census') His first marriage was to my great grandmother Martha Stethem.  They had my grandmother Mildred Baker who was born in 1912.  They got a divorce and both remarried.  George married Georgia unknown before 1930 and had two children with her. My great uncle Robert Perry Baker & my great aunt Edith Baker.  I am at a loss because I cannot find anything on them beyond what my family has told me. I even talked to my great uncle and asked him if he knew where his father was from, he couldn't, all he could tell me was that he was a farmer in Clinton, Ohio.  Though, I know by the census' that this is not the only place in Ohio he lived.  If you can help, I would greatly appreciate it, I just thought that since the middle names were so similar, maybe there would be a connection.  Thank you kindly, Erin T. Crowe

BROWNFIELD

Deborah Brownfield Stanley

122 Whiting

Toledo, Ohio  43609-2047 Alohawahine75@aol.com

I am hoping to make family connections, regarding the surname of BROWNFIELD. Would enjoy hearing from any of the branches.
My great grandparents were: ROMULUS K. BROWNFIELD and JULITTA J. (WELLS) BROWNFIELD. ROMULUS was born July 23, 1854-1855 in Ohio, county unknown and died February 23, 1910 at Woodsfield, Ohio. JULITTA was the daughter of WILLIAM WELLS and MARGARET (SNYDER) WELLS, she was born March 4, 1860, in Ohio, county unknown and died January 30, 1919 at Woodsfield, Ohio.  I believe that all of their children were probably born in Monroe County.
Their children:
Elizabeth J. Brownfield - b.1879
William Clyde Brownfield - b. 1881
James A. Brownfield - b. 1883 (may have been called "Dink")
Nora E. Brownfield - b. 1885
Julia A. (Brownfield) Tuttle - b.1887
Rachael B. (Brownfield) Stephens - b. 1889
George W. Brownfield - b. 1891
Barbara E. Brownfield - b. 1893-1894
Bojella Roy Brownfield - b. 1896
Dalton Guy Brownfield - b. 1899-1900
Of the above children, my grandmother was NORA BROWNFIELD, born July 8, 1885-1886? probably born in Seneca Township. As far as I know she  never married. She had two sons: STEWART BROWNFIELD, born December 25, 1907 and my father WELDON KIRKWOOD BROWNFIELD, born July 12, 1918 in Seneca Township. According to his birth certificate the name of his father was WALTER MARICAL. I suspect that the spelling of his surname should be MIRACLE.
I have a page out of a date calendar book in NORA BROWNFIELD'S handwriting that she wrote "We came to Quaker City in year 1920 April." I believe that most of my BROWNFIELD relatives are buried in Calais Cemetery.
Also interested in finding out who A. R. Brownfield was, he must be connected to me. Grandma Nora gave me a pamphlet years ago that has on the front of it "Organization Day" 53D Infantry, 16 June 1955, A. R. Brownfield Col Inf Commanding. Some type of program or event must have occurred for this to be printed up.

Mr. & Mrs. Archibald (Margaret) Cooper who resided on Oak Lawn Av. in the 1930's Woodsfield, Oh had a son one Homer M. Cooper age 25 when Homer enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1918. Cooper was born in Monroe County. I do not have his date of birth. Homer was Honorably discharged in 1919 with Surgeons Certificate of 25 percent disabled. Homer had a ham radio set that kept him busy as he was confined to his bed, when he returned from the war. He was very active on the amateur radio in the 1930's. We are attempting to ascertain what became of Homer M. Cooper. I have checked Social Security Death records but do not have a good match. He probably expired before social security numbers were issued. Homer apparently allowed his radio license expire in the late 1930's or early 40's for one reason or another.
Can anyone help me out on this, in a attempt to ascertain what became of Homer M. Cooper W8OIG. Thanks in advance, Sincerely Bob Ballantine, Warren, Oh. Radio project.

DAVIS

I just found out that my great-great grandparents JOSIAH and HULDAH DAVIS and their son Yager Davis (aged 22) were living in Woodsfield Center Twp. in Monroe County, OHIO, confirmed by the 1880 census. The census says that Josiah was 68 years old and a liveryman, born in (Greene Co.) PA. His wife Hulda(h) was 61 years old, keeping house, and born in Ohio. Their son (Isaac) Yager was 22 and a hostler, born in Ohio.

I was wondering if there were any property records and/or tax records that might show the years they lived in Monroe County.

I do know that they were living in Guernsey County, Ohio, from 1854 until 1867 (and could be 1869). They sold property in Guernsey County in l869. I have been unable to locate them in l870 so am hoping property deed records and/or tax records might help me to know when they lived in Monroe County. Thank you so much for your help. I am hoping that you can give me a hand with an Ohio history mystery.  When John Wesley Powell led the famous first expedition down the Colorado River in 1869, one of his boatmen was named William H. Dunn.  Because Dunn perished on the trip, historians never had a chance to learn anything about him, not even his age or where he was born.  But there was one clue in the record that he might have been from Ohio.  I would like to pursue this clue further.  I would hope that this mystery might interest some Ohio genealogists or historians, who might dig into local records, most likely from the 1830s to 1850s.  Thank you very much for any help you can offer.  Don Lago, P. O. Box 369, Flagstaff, AZ  86002

lekern@bellsouth.net

My name is Linda Easley (Iseli) Kern. have been trying to track down my families history. It appears that my great grandfather Bendict (Bendigt) Iseli (Iserli) married Maria Anna Alleman on February 10, 1876 in the State of Ohio, Monroe County. No. 133. I believe the probate judge last name was Norris. ( I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed the Seal of said court, at _ _ _ _ dsfield, the 26th day of January, 1876. (I guess that is when they picked up the certificate and then they married later.)

I have three baptismal certificates that are in some type of German maybe for my grandfather and uncles. Johann (John) Benjamin Iseli b. August 27, 1876 baptised April 1877 Monroe County Ohio, Rev Adolph J Bartels Albert Eugene (Gene) Isel b. August 12, 1877, baptised April 1878 Monroe County Ohio, Rev Adolph J Bartels Henirich Wilhehime (Bill) Iseli, b.February 2, 1879, baptised April 13, 1879, Monroe County Ohio, Rev. Adolph J Bartels Ela Magdalenn Iseli, b. Novemeber 15, 1881, died February 1885. No certificate Hoping you have some type of record.

Was hoping that there was info for censes or something on them. I'm sure that baby Ela was buried in Monroe County someplace. I believe that happened before they moved to Brown County, Illinois. They also changed their name to Easley some time after moving to Illinois.

Hoping you can fill in the gaps. Or let me know who might be able to help me. Thanks, Linda Easley (Iseli) Kern

My great-grandparents were John (H. or W. I have seen it both ways) Garrett and Martha (maiden name Hann or Hahn) Garrett from Monroe County Ohio. Martha was born in 1835 and died January 30, 1905. She was 69 years 10 months and 15 days at her death. John H. or W. Garrett was three years younger, I believe, although I have seen it as 1835 also. Martha was said to have grown up in Monroe county Ohio and moved to Indiana with her brother in law, Hiram Decker in 1857. She married John H. or W. in May of 1858. His parents were from Ohio also. I am looking for information on the both of them to find out who their parents were. I have found something very interesting in the 1860 Marion County Census. I am researching my great great grand parents, Adam J Myers and Mary B Gray Myers. Both lived in Center Township, near Woodsfield on the 1880 census. Both of them reported they were born in Ohio, and an informal family history I have shows they were born in Monroe County. On the census it shows that Mary s parents were born in Maryland, and Adam s in Virginia.

I am wondering if Mary may have been a sister of David Gray. I have the following from family records: Adam J Myers (b 9/18/1840) married Mary B Gray (b 1842) on 8/8/1861 in Monroe Co Ohio. They lived near Woodsfield and reported themselves as farmers on the 1880 census. They had 10 children, some of whom are buried in Jerusalem Oh. After Mary Gray Myers died in 1886, Adam remarried Ella Clark and had 4 more children. I have all the children s names. My records shows: Adam Myers is buried in Moffets on Jackson Ridge Mary B Gray Myers is buried in cemetery just beyond Sylvia and Ella Jackson s farm, south of Jackson s ridge. Adam J Myers joined the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. I found he enlisted Aug. 12, 1862; was wounded at Lynchburg, Va., June 18, 1864; commissioned Second Lieutenant June 20, 1865; but not mustered. He returned to his wife in Monroe Co after the war, and his first child was born in 1867. His 6th child was Albert O Myers- whose house I was shown as a child in Woodsfield. Albert had 9 children, one of whom was my grandfather, Everett W Myers. I am interested in how either of these two (Adam or Mary) came to live in Monroe county. I am also wanting more information on David Gray to see if he is connected to Mary Gray.

My great great grandfather was Jesse Headley, b 12 June 1807, who was married to Elsie Mahon. He lived in Malaga Township, Monroe County, Ohio at the time of the 1840 census. In that census, Jesse was between 30 and 40. There also was Aaron Headley, between 50 and 60. I am wondering if Aaron was Jesse's father. Jesse was living in Pike County in the 1850 census and then moved to Marion County, Illinois, shortly after that. His children were Rosanna, Mary, Eli, Sarah, Jeptha, Levi, and David. David, b. 1843, in Monroe County, was my great grandfather. David, Levi, Eli, and Jeptha were all in the Civil War. Eli and David returned home to live their lives in Marion County, Illinois, but Levi was captured and died at Andersonville, and Jeptha died at Marietta, Ga.
Do any of you have a connection to these names or know if Jesse was the son of Aaron Headley. Thank you. My e-mail address is Nan130@aol.com

I am seeking info on any Hubachers, several in perticular: John Hubacher s/o Nickolas & Mary (Lapp) Hubacher. I am also trying to find info on daughters: Mary & Luisa, I don't know anything about them.  Also Elizabeth married John Kraas 21 Dec. 1867.  I don't know Dob or Dod for anything of these relatives or where they are buried.  Maybe someone out there can help me.

The Hubachers tie into my family on my Dad's side.  They lived in Switzerland Twp. in Monroe Co., Ohio and are German-Swiss.  The ones I am seeking would have been born in the 1800s.  The ones I am inquiring about, I don't have DOB or DOD.  What I figured they died in Ohio, probably Monroe Co.  The ones I am inquiring about were 1 of 10 children.  I have a John Hubacher, but he is the wrong one.  Elizabeth, Mary, and Luisa are listed in 1850, 1860, and missing from the 1870 Census.  John is listed in the 1860 but missing from 1870 census.  Here are the approximate years of birth according to the census:  Elizabeth-1843/1844, Mary-1845, Luisa-1846/1847, Lena-1848/1849, and John-1854.  There are a lot of Hubachers on the Hard To Find Surnames, around 200.  I posted the query there also, but no results. I hope I have answered your questions.

Amos Jones b. ca. 1827 in probably Monroe County, Ohio married three times 1st to Catherine Tuttle, 2nd Sarah Dailey or Brister and 3rd to Susannah Stackhouse.  Amos had no children (?) with first wife, daughter Rachel with 2nd and step-children with Susannah Stackhouse (who married James Wilson after Amos' death).
Daughter Rachel born 1850, Monroe County Ohio, married 1868 to Samuel Dailey son of John and Elizabeth Carpenter Dailey.  Amos served in Civil War, died in confederate prison, had a brother William (possibly others).  Daughter Rachel, per oral family history, given by her daughter, was raised by maternal Grandparents Brister.  Samuel and Rachel relocated to Roanoke, Huntington County, Indiana following marriage where the Baker, Dailey and Carpenter families of Monroe County, Ohio settled.

Looking for information on ascendents of Amos Jones, record for marriage to 2nd wife Sarah, her maiden name, burial, etc...  Any information would be helpful.

Looking for info on Emanuel Landis, born around 1861. In 1900 census he was married to Anna, maiden name Ruble born in 1871. They had two children: M----can't make out the name age 13 born in 1886 and a son Franklin (my grandfather) age 12 born in 1888. In the 1910 census Emanuel is 49 and Franklin 21 but neither Anna nor the daughter are living in this household. Again in the 1920 census I found Emanuel Landis age 58 married to wife Sarah age 45. They have a son Reubon I. age 1-1/2. Also in the household is another son George Polen (not sure if that is correct) age 21 and a brother-in-law David S. Hickman age 58. I think David is Sarah's brother. I have confirmed that this is indeed the same Samuel Landis my great grandfather through my aunt but she doesn't remember anything else except she remembered Reubon but doesn't know what happened to him. Emanuel's son Franklin is married in the 1920 census to Matten "Mattie" Ollom and have 4 children one of which was my father. I have a lot of info on the Ollom family but need more on the Landis family and the Ruble family.

I am looking for information on George Lawhead. According to the 1880 Michigan census, he was born in Ohio. His marriage record indicates a birthplace of "Westfield, Monroe C.O.". I have reason to believe that the "Westfield" may be a mis-interpretation of "Woodsfield", but I'm not sure. I have found a George Lawhead that may be him in the 1900 Michigan census, but it states birthplace of Pennsylvania - which is why I think that Westfield is incorrect. He would have been born about 1845/46.

janeb11@hotmail.com

Seeking information on my LEHMAN ancestors.  Found them on 1860 census - Monroe Co., Salem Twp. Listed on census as John G. Layman (actually John J. Lehman).  He, his wife Mary Ann and son, Augustus (8 Yrs) were all born in Switzerland. Son, William (6), Jacob (4), John (2) and Jesse (10 mo.) were all born in Ohio.  Therefore, they immigrated to U.S. between 1852 and 1854.  John Lehman served in the 116th Ohio Infantry, Co. E. in the Civil War.  I found them on the 1870 Pennsylvania census in Allegheny County.  Ages are off on the children; and while sons John and Jesse are no longer listed (evidently died in Ohio); other children listed as born in Ohio are:  George, Mary, and Amelia.  If anyone has info. or is related, please contact me.  I am desperate to find information.

LEHMAN

Jane Billingsley
2628 New Bedford Court, Bedford, TX. 76022 janeb11@hotmail.com

I am trying to find information on my great grandfather, John J. Lehman (listed on the 1880 Monroe Cty., Salem Twnshp., Clarington P.O. as John G. Layman).  He served in the 116th Ohio Infantry, Co. E.  He, his wife Mary Ann, and son August were all born in Switzerland.  Other children born in Ohio were:  William, Jacob, John, Jesse, Joseph, George, Mary, and Amelia.  It seems that John and Jesse both probably died in Ohio as they were only 2 yrs. old and 10 mo. old respectively at the time of the 1860 census, and neither shows up where they relocated in Allegheny Co., Penn. (1870 census).  The last child as noted on the 1870 census that was born in Ohio was Amelia, born approximately 1865.  They had a child named Annie born in Penn. in 1874.  Thus, they moved from Ohio between 1865 and 1870.  I also assume they could have had other children between 1865 and 1870 that died and thus did not appear on either census.  John was a wagon maker in Ohio, and laborer in Penn.!
I understand he built sled runners.  Later, in Mo. (1880 census), he was a coal miner.  He may have spent some time in that profession in Ohio or Penn.  I would like to find any information.  I have found all mentioned above through research.  I have no photos or info. on immigration, religion, or land.  Please help if you can.

Wondering if the Luedy Family that lived in Monroe County in the early 20th century descends from Jakob, born in Heimiswil Bern 5 Sep 1852 and whether there are descendants.

In the records of Heimiswil Bern, Switzerland I find simply that Jakob Luedi (written L di) born in Heimiswil Bern 5 Sep 1852 emigrated to the US). There is a matching Luedy family in US census, living in Monroe OH. A wife Elisabeth (no surname) and 6 children named Jakob (* abt 1886), Charles A. (*1887), William (*1893), Christina (*abt 1896), Henry and Francy (*1898). I completed the family record with information from the LDS-database (finding the presumed family of Henry Luedy (wife Ella Walter, son Eugene H. *1927).  I wonder if the Jakob living in Monroe OH is the same person as the Jakob that emigrated from Heimiswil. Age and other external data seem to correspond.

I am looking for any information concerning the genealogy of Robert Mahoney, who is buried in a cemetery in Boston, Ohio. He died at 88 years, 11 months, and 7 days, and was married on May 29, 1824. However, I don't know his dates of birth and death. I visited his grave as a child with my grandfather, since deceased. Robert had at least one child, a son named William, who was born in 1832 and died in 1839. Perhaps this info might be found today in Belmont County - I'm not sure when the partitioning of counties occurred.

Isaac MATHEWS is listed in the 1840, 1850, 1860 census of Monroe County, however, he apparently has died by 1870. Isaac Mathews in the 1850 census is listed with wife Bethany. Children listed in 1850 census are Ideann age 12, Jacob age 8, and Andrew Jackson, age 2. In 1860, Issac is married to Malinda Pittman Hoover and has another son, Alex. By 1870, Isaac is apparently dead and Malinda is listed as head of household with sons, Alex and James. Our questions are these: Can anyone identify Bethany's maiden name? Is she the Bethany Mathews who died 1855 and is buried in the Eddy Cemetery in Monroe County? What happened to Ideann, Jacob, Alex and James Mathews? Who did they marry, where did they move? Could Isaac have possibly had a 3rd wife, maiden name Mary E. Wright? Is Mary Ellen Mathews who married James Eddy in Monroe Co and moved to Tyler Co, WV also a daughter of Isaac Mathews? Any help with these questions greatly appreciated.

He was born possibly Jan 1865, son of William McCloud and Elizabeth Bellar.  I'm told you may not have birth records for that far back but I'm hoping you might.  He married Almira Freese approximately 1895. But not sure where.  I kind of doubt in Monroe Co. but at that time they may have been traveling from PA to the Columbus, Ohio area.

Can you tell me what has happened to the church records of the Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church? According to an LDS Church microfilm, the records are contained in two volumes and in good condition. At one time they were in the care of the church custodian. I the contents of these records would be very valuable to me. Thank you, Peggy McFarland

McFARLAND

Peggy A. McFarland
HC 60 Box 4180, Lakeview, OR 97630 mcfarland@presys.com

John MCFARLAND b. 1793 Ireland and Isabella Gillespie b. 1804 Pennsylvania were married 1822 in Belmont County and moved to Adams Township, Monroe County in 1827. They had a large family including sons John b. 1842, James b.1835, and William b. 1838. John and James both enlisted in the Ohio E 116th 19 August 1862 and were killed in June/July 1863 in Wincester, VA. Son William also fought in the Civil War. However, there are two William McFarlands and I can't figure out which one is John & Isabella's son. Both were born abt. 1838.

1) William married Matilda (Myers) and had a large family. He fought in the Ohio 71st. He was Isabella's neighbor and helped on the farm after her husband John died in 1862. William and Matilda migrated to Otoe Cty., Nebraska in 1879 along with other family members. He filed for a disability pension in 1869. His widow Matilda filed for widow's pension in 1909 from Ohio.

2) William B. McFarland married Mary (Myers?) and enlisted in the Ohio E 116th 19 Aug 1862. No information on their family. He was filed for a disability pension 4 Mar 1872. Mary filed for her widow's pension in 1904 from Nebraska.

Which William is the son of John and Isabella McFarland-the one who enlisted on the same day in the same Ohio E 116th as brothers John and James? Or the one who lived next door to Isabella after John died, but served in the Ohio 71st. Both ended up living in Nebraska at some point. Both names have been given as William B.

I would love to find out for sure if Theophilus was Joseph's father. Not many of the Muth's know about my grandfather's existence, because my great-grandmother had him out of wedlock, and this was shunned by his paternal family at that time. His DOB is 3/7/1926. I have my genealogy on the Highman side, but none of the Muth side.

MYERS

Kymn Davis

Waverly, Ohio 45690

kymn@verizon.net

Johann Heinrich NIEMANN (Henry Niemann) was born in 1812 in Hanover.  Around 1855 he arrived in Monroe County and settled in Ohio Township.  Records of Zion Church in Ohio Twp. indicate his wife was Maria (Mary) Tickenbraugh or Deckenbrock. Supposedly his first wife died, leaving him with two sons, Frederick (b 1841) who married Salome Iseli and Henry (b 1848) who married Mary Winkler, d/o Joseph and Elizabeth Baertischi Winkler.  Henry Sr. and second wife Mary had additional children but only one survived to adulthood, Louisa Niemann Fuchs Richards.  Family tradition states that another daughter, Wilhemenia "Minnie" (b 1848), was a step-daughter to Henry.  She married August Klaproth and lived in Wheeling, WV, but her death record gave her father as Henry Niemann and she carried the Niemann name.  The family is said to have lived in the Cincinnati area before moving to Monroe County.  What brought them to this county?  Did they have other family here?  Would like to hear fr!

Isaac RUSH was born ca 1785 in PA.  It is believed he may have had brothers Richard, Peter, and Jacob Rush.  Isaac's first child, Jemima, was born in Lancaster County, PA.  Isaac moved to Monroe County, Ohio sometime between 1812-1815.  In 1823 he was appointed guardian of his younger children.  In 1823 in Lancaster County, PA, Joshua BROWN named the children of Isaac Rush as joint heirs in his will along with his (Joshua's) wife, Sarah. Isaac first settled in Sunsbury Township.  He later moved to Jackson Township where he apparently died sometime between 1850-1860. His wife in the 1850 census was Elizabeth, but she is believed to be a second wife and not the mother of his children: Jemima (Clithero), Rachel, Elizabeth (Brock), Richard, Isaac, Joshua, and Slater.  Any information would be appreciated.

What a wonderful and helpful site. I am from IL and am searching my husband's family. (St.Clair/Sinclair/Sinklair etc.) and however else they decided to spell it that year. Being so far away it is impossible with my work schedule to travel to OH and sending off for records that may or may not be the right link is frustrating. Your site has tried to put as much as possible on the web. Keep up the good work. I have found John Sinclair that may be my John St.Clair. Thanks for the help.

My husband's ggg grandfather's name was John St.Clair or Sinclair as it was sometimes given. John and Leander St.Clair lived somewhere in OH and Leandere lived as the head of the household in Noble Co. OH in 1860. They did not live there in 1850. I need to know if JOHN SINCLAIR of Monroe county is the same John. He is in the 1850 census as S524 John Sinclair Bealesville and Adams County. How can I find out his wife and children's names?

Nicholaus Walter (1808-1889) married to Maria Zonker (1822-1890) They are buried at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Switzerland township. They ran an Inn after arriving here from Switzerland sometime back in the 1820s. Do not know if other Walters came with them. Did they come with the Daniel Frankhauser family party as written in the 1969 publication of the Monroe County History booklet? There is also a Mary Walter buried at St. John's. Who might she be? Their graves are not together, Why? Any information would of a great help. Thank you in advance. Kristi (A descendent of Nick and Maria's son Christian)

I was told that they settled in Switzerland Township in the 1820s. I think it would have had to have been later than that because of Maria's birth date as 1822.????? I don't know? I know that Nicholaus was a member of the church from reading The 150th anniversary booklet of St. John's 1827- 1977. His name is in it with history around 1868-1870. There was also a Rev. W. I am seeking information/comments about George Weber who resided in Woodsfield from mid-1860's until his death in 1900. I was in Woodsfield Sat. Oct. 20, 2001 and visited his grave. His wife's name was Elizabetha Feldner. Two sons, John and Friedrich (also known as Darl). The sons moved to Pittsburgh around 1910. I learned Saturday that the Shumachers lived next door. I am curious as to what attracted German immigrants in the mid-1850's to Monroe Co. Also wondering if there was a particular population of Germans from the Alsace region which settled in this region.

My husband s grandfather was Jessie West.  His father was listed as Isaac West living in Monroe Co OH in the 1800's. I found him in the census with his wife Phoebe and children, in Monroe co.
They later moved the boundaries and he was then listed in Noble Co.  I cannot find any info on Isaac West or his wife's maiden name after the census.  The family moved to Wood Co WV and that is where I found them in the 1920 census.  I could not find Phoebe, or Isaac.  There children living in Wood Co were Louisa, or Louise, Steven, Jesse. It was rumored that Jesse was not Isaac's but someone he took in and raised as his own.  I cannot find any info about Jesse anywhere so maybe the rumor is correct.  Any help you can give me concerning Isaac, Phoebe, or any of the rest of the children would be appreciated. Sincerely Norma West

WILLISON

kwillison@cox.net

I have recently learned that the 1880 Census showed that my great grandfather, Albert Maywood Willison, was 14 and lived on a farm -- probably outside of Woodsfield.  His father's name was Lewis W. Willison; his mother was Louisa Willison.  Lewis Willison's father was also born in Ohio, perhaps Monroe Co. Albert Willison had three brothers:  Josiah M. Willison, William H. Willison and Forest O. Willison.  Forest may have inherited the farm.
Albert relocated to Chester, W. Va.  I have no record of Josiah.  Records show that William died in East Liverpool, OH. I would appreciate knowing whether anyone has any other records of this surname.  I have just started to research my family lineage and am starting with my father's side.  I now live in Northern Virginia. Thanks, Kirk G. Willison
