Moses HAYES was born in 1735 in MD. He signed a will on July 21, 1796 in Augusta Co. VA. He died before September 20, 1796 in Augusta Co. VA. Will of Moses Hays of Augusta Co. VA: Probated 20 Sep 1796.

Wife Sarah "and her children." Moses' children from Sophia Wood: Elizabeth Luce, Hannah Halsey, James Hayes, Mary Stockdale (Stockton), Isaac Hays, Richard Hays, Winstead Hays, William Hayes.

Sophia Wood (daughter of Isaac Wood and Elizabeth Willborn) was born on September 24, 1732 in Baltimore Co. MD. She died before 1780 in VA. Moses HAYES and Sophia Wood had the following children:

I. Isaac HAYES died in 1804 in Indian Nation. He was born in probably Augusta Co. VA.

Isaac HAYES was married to Mary Mitchell (daughter of Kent Mitchell and Hannah Wood) about 1800. Mary Mitchell was born in 1771 in Cumberland Co., PA. She died on May 9, 1857 in Perry Township, Monroe County, Ohio. She was buried in Antioch, Perry Township, Monroe County, Ohio. Isaac HAYES and Mary Mitchell had the following children:

A. James N. HAYES was born in 1800 in VA. He appeared on the census in 1840 in Tyler Co. WV. He died possibly 1867. A researcher sent me this information which is purportedly in William T. Hayes' Bible. Ancestry of James Hays from Terry Howard (TCH6535@@aol.com)

Relationship from James to Samuel is not definitely proven. But there appears to be enough evidence to make this assumption. For one, our Samuel is the same age as the Samuel, s/o James in the 1850 census. Samuel lived in Perry Township, which is where James had settled and lived in 1850. Family tradition claims a family relationship between Samuel and William, s/o James. William T. Hays of Pleasants & Tyler Co. "waded across the Ohio River with his family to visit his family in Antioch." Samuel lived near Antioch.

James Hays 60 VA, living in the home of Isaac and Nancy Phillips of Perry Township in the 1860 census appears to be our James. Nancy Hays Phillips was the sister of James Hays. Her ancestry was recorded in notes left by her daughter.

Susanna Williams Hays and some of the children are living in Washington County, Ohio in 1860. Susanna is with daughter Sarah Salsberry, Phebe and Francis are in separate homes. Samuel and William are unaccounted for in the 1860 census. Isaac Hays was living next to Levi Williams in Wayne Township. Monroe Co. OH. Susanna later moved to Wayne Township.

According to a biography of William T. Hayes in West Virginia Soldiers and Statesmen, William s father James Hays was a Black Hawk War Veteran. I have been unable to find any records to verify this.

James N. HAYES was married to Susanna WILLIAMS (daughter of probably Thomas WILLIAMS and Serena Unknown) about 1835. Susanna WILLIAMS was born in 1815 in Pennsylvania. She died possibly 24 Aug 1891. A researcher sent me this information and said it was from William T. Hayes' Bible. It also noted she was 72 years old. No death record has been located.

On 7 Apr 1868, Joseph Elllis married Mrs. Susan Hayes in Monroe County, OH. Joseph Ellis died in July 1868. In the 1870 census, Susanna Ellis is in Wayne Township, age 54, born PA. In her household is Florence Booth, age 4. She is living next to the Levi Williams family.

Joseph Ellis' will of July 1868 gave wife Susannah Ellis 1/4 part of his real estate and the personal property she brought with her: 1 cow, 1 side saddle, household goods. His children were Nathan A. Ellis, Jane Rankin, Citty A. Oden, grandson John Oden and Thomas Moore, who lived with him and wife Elizabeth (according to Elizabeth's will in 1867).

In 1860 Susanna Hayes, 46 OH, is living with Cyrus Salsberry and Sarah J. 19 PA, and son James W. in Grandview Township., Washington Co. OH. Francis M. Hayes 12 is in the home of George Salsbury. Phebe Hayes, 16, is in the home of Nathan Daly. If James is one of the James Hays' found in Monroe County in 1860, what happened to separate this family? The only missing members of this family in 1860 are Samuel, who was married by this time, and William T. who would have been 13. Was William with Samuel in 1860? James Hays, who we believe is our ancestor, is living with Nancy Hays Phillips and family. He is listed as a pauper. Could poverty have split this family?

1. Samuel Hayes was born in 1836. Census records vary on birthplace from Pennsylvania to Ohio. He died before March 1897 in possibly Monroe County, Ohio. Birth date is approximate from census records. The death date is based on an estate settlement in Monroe County, Ohio. There is no death record. Samuel died in debt.

Susan Billiter (daughter of John BILLITER and Lucy Ann CROW) was born about 1838 in Marshall County, West Virginia. She died in 1899 in Monroe County, OH. Samuel Hayes and Susan Billiter had the following children: (See link to Billiter Family Web site)

a. Amanda Isabella HAYES was born on December 21, 1859 in Tyler Co. WV. She died in 1946 in Monroe County, OH. She was buried in West Union, Perry Township, Monroe County, Ohio.

Amanda Isabella HAYES was married to Joe Franklin STINE on January 25, 1880 in Monroe County, OH. Joe Franklin STINE was born on January 6, 1861 in Monroe County, Ohio. He died on April 14, 1931 in Monroe County, Ohio. He was buried in West Union, Perry Township, Monroe County, Ohio. Amanda Isabella HAYES and Joe Franklin STINE had the following children:

i. Laura STINE was born in 1881 in Monroe County, Ohio. She died in 1965.

ii. Ethel E. STINE was born in 1884. She died in 1956.

From West Virginia Soldiers and Statesmen (Pleasants County): William T. Hayes is a native of Monroe County, Ohio, where he still lived when he entered the service of his country in January '65 at the age of 17; he enlisted in Co. G, 184th OVI;....information about unit and service......In August '67 he was married in Washington County, OH to Mary Kelley, of that county, whose father Ebenezer Kelly died in 1861 and whose mother Clara (Woods) Kelly is yet living at age 77. Mr and Mrs. Hayes have eight children: Clara E. b Jun '69, Jane A. March '71, Sarah B. b July '72, Lillie M. b November '76, Delitha F. b February '79, Allen T. b May '81, Cleveland C. b February '83 and Phoebe A. b Feb. '86. Mr. Hayes' parents, James & Susannah (Willims) Hayes have both passed away. The former served in the Black Hawk war with the Indians. Following Isaac's death, Nancy moved with several of her children to Jefferson County, Kansas. She was living in Oskaloosa Township, Jefferson, Kansas, in 1870 with her son Joseph M. Phillips.

Nancy HAYES was married to Isaac Phillips (son of William PHILLIPS and Susan King) on December 17, 1830. Isaac Phillips was born on February 10, 1811 in Pennsylvania. He died on November 21, 1862 in Monroe County, OH. Nancy HAYES and Isaac Phillips had the following children:

1. Ezra M. Phillips was born about 1832 in Monroe County, OH. He died before December 11, 1915.

Ezra M. Phillips was married to Mary Cisne (daughter of Emanuel Cisne and Sarah Girard or Garrett). Ezra M. Phillips and Mary Cisne had the following children:
