1. Jacob CROW \GROH was born in 1732 in Germany. He died in Jul 1823 or Aug 1823 at the age of 91 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. He was buried about Aug 1823 in Crow Family Cemetery, Greene County, Pennsylvania. Jacob signed a will on 19 Aug 1823 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Will Book 1, page 228, file #408

name appears to have been Groh/Gro and Americanized into Crow. The history of Jacob Crow is recorded by J. Homer Crow in "The Fireside Stories of the Jacob Crow Family." He adds the family story that Jacob lived with two sisters and his mother before migrating to America. Another story claims Jacob was the son of George Philip Groh and came to America with him in 1752.

The murders of his children are recorded in several Western Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania history books. John Crow was killed by Indians in 1789 on Crows Run, Wetzel County, West Virginia, while on a hunting trip with older brothers, Fred and Martin. On 1 May 1791, four of Jacob's daughters, Lizabeth, Susan, Katherine and Christena, were attacked by two Indians and a white man named Spicer. Three of the sisters were tomahawked and scalped. Christena escaped, but carried the mark of a tomahawk on her neck for the rest of her life.

Susanna SEIGRIST, daughter of Johann SEIGRIST and Anna WILDERGER, was born in 1742 in Rafz, Eglisau, Canton Schaffhausen, Switzerland. She died after 1821 at the age of 79 in Greene County, Pennsylvania.

11. George Frederick CROW was born on 26 Jul 1762 in York County, Pennsylvania. Friedericus born 26 Jul 1762, bap 29 Aug 1762, parents Jacob Gro, wf Susanna Siegrist, sponsors: Friedrich Steitzinger, Magdalena. First Trinity Reformed Church, York County, Pennsylvania.

He was baptized on 29 Aug 1762 in First Trinity Reformed Church, York, Pennsylvania.¹ He appeared in the census in 1820 in Seneca Township, Monroe, Ohio. George died in 1824 at the age of 62 in Monroe County, Ohio. He signed a will in Mar 1824 in Monroe County, Ohio. Pg 32 - Last will of Frederick Crow proven in court. Witnesses: Thomas Martin, Thomas Mills. Letters testamentary to Rachel Crow, Jacob Crow, Martin Cow, executors of the said will. Elisha Enochs, Joshua Craig, Lemuel Rucker appointed appraisers.

Frederick was baptized in York County, Pennsylvania. He was credited with Revolutionary War service for protecting the frontier. He settled on Clear Fork of the Little Muskingum River in 1805.

Rachel ENOCHS, daughter of Enoch ENOCHS and Rebecca MORRIS, was born in 1764 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. There is a Cintha Worstell b 1815 OH, living among the Jacob Crow (s/o Fred) families in 1850 Franklin. Her children have the same names as the Crows. Is she a sister?

Were Isaac, Rhoda and Mary the children of Fred? Rachel, if born in 1764, would be too old to be their mother, at least the mother of Mary. Either there is a large gap in children or something is not right here. It was quoted by both J. Homer Crow & Fedorchak, but may be the same mistake repeated. If the last three children were Fred's, why were they not appointed guardians until 3 years after his death? George Frederick CROW and Rachel ENOCHS had the following children:

111. John CROW was born about 1788.² J. Homer Crow said this son lost his life in the War of 1812. There is no other information on him. Was he the John Crow in Capt. John Howell's co?

112. Jacob CROW³ was born about 1790 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. He died on 9 Mar 1846 at the age of 56 in Monroe County, Ohio.⁴ Widow petitioned his estate for her dower on 29 May 1846.

Mary LEASURE was born in 1802 in Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Elk Township, Monroe County, Ohio. 7 Oct 1850 - 492/493 Thomas Ayers 42 OH, Mary 48 VA, Isaac CROW 19, Martin 15, Rhoda 13, Diantha 10, Cintha 8, Robert 4, Robert AYERS 11, Nancy CROW 21. All children born Ohio.

Who were Jacob Crow 30 OH, Elizabeth 30, Susannah 7, Frederick 5, John 3, Mary 1 AND George Crow 24 OH, Mary A. 19, Mary E. 3/12. They were living on either side of Mary. She died in May 1883 at the age of 81 in Monroe County, Ohio. Also Lazear, Leisure. Jacob CROW and Mary LEASURE were married on 21 Nov 1822.⁴ History of Reno County, Kansas --Jacob was 27 when he married. 1121. George CROW was born about 1825 in Monroe County, Ohio. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Elk Township, Monroe County, Ohio. He died in 1889 at the age of 64 in Reno County, Kansas.⁵

1122. Elizabeth CROW was born in 1826 in Monroe County, Ohio. She died in Noble County, Ohio.⁵

John JORDAN was born in 1820 in Pennsylvania. Elizabeth CROW and John JORDAN were married before 1850. They appeared in the census in 1850 in Union Township, Monroe County, Ohio.

1123. Ann CROW was born in 1827 in Monroe County, Ohio. She died in Washington County, Ohio.⁵

William MASTERS was born in 1797 in New Jersey. Ann CROW and William MASTERS were married about 1845. They appeared in the census in 1850 in Elk Township, Monroe County, Ohio. They were living three doors from Mary Leasure Crow, mother of Ann.

1124. Nancy CROW was born in 1829. Nancy Crow 21 is living with Thomas and Mary (Leasure Crow) Ayers in 1850. She is identified as having married within the year. If so, who is her husband? If not, is she the Nancy identified as an heir of Jacob in the 1847 petition to sell lands? Or is Nancy a nickname for Rhoda Crow who appears in the 1850 census with the family of Thomas and Mary Ayers? In Mary Leasure Crow's pension application for her son Jacob's service, she does not identify Mary or Nancy as children.

She died in 1899 at the age of 70 in Wyandott County, Ohio.⁵ She was not identified in the pension file as a child, but she was named as a sister in the biographical sketch of Isaac's children. Was her name Colwell or Caldwell? In an advertisement seeking out of state heirs, it named Nancy and John Colwell, and Jacob Crow, residents of Minnesota.

1125. Isaac CROW was born about 1831 in Monroe County, Ohio. He died on 3 Mar 1903 at the age of 72 in Reno Township, Reno, Kansas.³

Mary CALVERT was born about 1837 in Monroe County, Ohio. She died after 1917 at the age of 80. Isaac CROW and Mary CALVERT were married on 1 Aug 1859 in Monroe County, Ohio.

1126. Jacob CROW was born in 1833 in Monroe County, Ohio. He died on 1 Apr 1865 at the age of 32 in Baltimore, Maryland. Mother received a pension from his service. He died a prisoner of war. Is he the Jacob Crow in the 1850 census living next to Mary & Thomas Ayers? Jacob 30, Elizabeth 30, Susannah 7, Frederick 5, John 3, Mary 1. Possibly not because Jacob, s/o Jacob & Mary, served in the war and Mary received a pension for his service.

1127. Martin CROW was born in 1835 in Monroe County, Ohio. He died on 14 Oct 1904 at the age of 69 in Reno County, Kansas.⁶ He was not identified as one of the children of Jacob according to the sketch of George Luther Crow (History of Reno county, Kansas).

Martha RAY died on 14 May 1871 in Noble County, Ohio. She was buried in Stewart Cemetery, Noble, Ohio. Martin CROW and Martha RAY were married.

Linda UNKNOWN was born (date unknown). Martin CROW and Linda UNKNOWN were married.

1128. Rhoda CROW was born in 1837 in Monroe County, Ohio. She died on 17 Apr 1851 at the age of 14 in Noble County, Ohio.⁵

1129. Diantha CROW was born in 1838 in Monroe County, Ohio. She lived in Wyandot County, Ohio in 1912.⁵

112A. Cynthia CROW was born in 1840 in Monroe County, Ohio. She died in Noble County, Ohio.⁵

112B. Robert CROW was born on 3 Feb 1847 in Monroe County, Ohio. He died on 10 Feb 1915 at the age of 68 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio.⁷ He was not identified as a sibling in the pension file of Jacob, but was identified in the suit to settle the estate of his father. His death record also identifies him as a son.

112C. Mary CROW⁵ died in Noble County, Ohio, in childhood. She was not named in the pension record of Jacob, but was identified in the biographical sketch of Isaac's children.

113. Martin CROW was born about 1792. He died in Mar 1826 at the age of 34. Likely the Martin Crow whose will was probated March 1826.

p 104 - Witnessed by John Wells and David Lazure. Executor was Jacob Crow and appraisers were Elisha Enochs, Daniel Blake, and Jacob Richardson.

115. Elizabeth CROW was born (date unknown). J. Homer Crow believed she was the daughter of this family, but it is not proven.

116. Isaac CROW was born in Jul 1809. p 122 - Minor heir of Frederick Crow, dec. Isaac was 17 years 9 months when John Carmichael was appointed his guardian in April 1827.

117. Rhoda CROW was born in May 1812. p 128 Apr term 1827 - She was aged 14 years and 11 months when John Carmichael was appointed her guardian in April 1827.

118. Mary CROW was born about 1820. She was 7 years in April 1827 when Jacob Crow was appointed her guardian.

12. Peter CROW was born in 1763 in Pennsylvania. Between 1778 and 1790 he was an Indian Scout in Fort Henry, Ohio County, West Virginia. He died on 25 Nov 1826 at the age of 63 in Ohio County, West Virginia, now Marshall County, West Virginia. Peter was buried in Family Cemetery, Limestone, Marshall, West Virginia.

Susanna EARLIWINE, daughter of Abraham EARLIWINE and Eva Catherine GASSER, was born on 7 Jul 1775 in Maryland or Pennsylvania. She died on 11 Feb 1854 at the age of 78 in Marshall County, West Virginia.⁸ She was buried in Family Cemetery, Limestone, Marshall, West Virginia. Peter CROW and Susanna EARLIWINE had the following children:

125. Frances CROW was born about 1803 in Marshall County, West Virginia. Information on Frances and her husbands came from the "Fireside Stories of the Jacob Crow Family." The 1850 census Frances is head of household with Absalom and Mary. Her age is given as 42. This must have been read incorrectly as she would only have been 12 at the time of her first marriage. The 1860 census gives her age as 57 which would make her date 1803 and her age at the first marriage at 17.

Another possible daughter of Frances and Jeremiah is Susanna Blair who married Jonathan Marpool 1 Nov 1850. In 15 Mar 1849 Mary Ann Blair married Joseph Knox. This must not be the Mary A. living with Frances in 1850 since her last name is Blair.

James FISHER was born (date unknown). Frances CROW and James FISHER were married on 19 Sep 1852 in Marshall County, West Virginia.⁹

Aged member of Pioneer Family-Funeral Tuesday
Mrs. Susanna Standiford, widow of Abraham Standiford, died at her home in Glendale Sunday night at eight fifteen o'clock. Funeral will be at the Christian church Tuesday at 2 p.m. They will leave the house at one o'clock promptly. She was born on Stulls Run on the 15th of January, 1815, one week after the battle of New Orleans and was in her ninety seventh year.
Mrs. Standiford usually enjoyed good health till the last few years she had been afflicted with rheumatism and other afflictions incident to old age. She has been a very active woman and possessed largely of that type of industry that could not endure inactivity or idleness and consequently always kept diligently at work at something, not as a necessity, but as a choice, believing, probably, that busy hands made a more agreeable temper. Until the past few years she did considerable work as a means of healthful exercise. She spent her life in this county on a farm and could give many accounts of rural life since her first recollection of life as it was in the early part of the past century. She has seen the introduction of many conveniences for house work as
well as labor saving machinery for the farm. In her early years sewing machines were not thought of. Almost all the wares of the family were home made and she, no doubt was one of the expert workers in that line, as many of girls of that day prided themselves in their skill at such work.
Of her children, there are living William Standiford with whom she lived, age seventy-two, Pete Standiford, age 70, Mrs. B.L. Crow, age about 68 and Mrs. Margaret Noffsinger of Parkersburg. Her daughters Mrs. Susan Garner age 72 and Mrs. Standiford died within the last three months.
She was the daughter of Peter Crow who was the son of Jacob Crow Sr. who was one of the first settlers on the south fork of Wheeling Creek, now generally called Crow's Creek and on some maps called Dunkard's Fork of Wheeling Creek. Moundsville Echo 24 Mar 1912

This would be the correct Peter Crow if Peter who married Elizabeth Shook is the son of Peter and Susanna.

Jacob SAILOR was born on 17 Mar 1777 in Pennsylvania.²³ He died on 16 Dec 1868 at the age of 91 in Iowa. Esther and Jacob lived on a creek flowing out of Duck Creek, which was called Sailors Run, in Monroe County, Ohio. They moved to Indiana about 1830 and later was said to have moved to Iowa.

1C. Mary CROW was born on 15 Mar 1784. She died on 27 Jan 1866 at the age of 81. Family tradition states Mary was the youngest child of Jacob and Susanna. When her sisters were attacked in 1791 and the family fled to the fort, she was carried to Fort Lindley by her brother Michael. She is said to have been the mother of 15 children. If her birth year is correct, she can't be the mother of Serena and William.

"Fireside Stories of Jacob Crow Family" gives her marriage date as 1 Dec 1812. This date must be wrong. Hiram (Misread in the census index as Niram Gray) is listed in 1810 census of Greene County, Richhill. Appears to be married with two children. One of these may be Jacob Gray who was born in 1807 and was living near Hiram and Mary in the 1850 census.

Hiram GRAY was born in 1779 in Virginia. He died in Dec 1859 at the age of 80 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. Mary CROW and Hiram GRAY had the following children:

1C4. William GRAY was born about 1831. William is listed with Hiram and Mary in the 1850 census, but if Mary's age is correct, she would have been 47 when William was born.
