[FROM NOTES OF B. F. ATKINSON ON THE JONES FAMILY. HE WAS THE GRANDSON OF MARGARET (JONES) ATKINSON.]
"The Jones family emigrated from England and were of Welsh blood. They came at an early date, prior to the Revolutionary War to the colonies. The original family of brothers were divided in the war sentiment; out of the three or four brothers, only one was true to the Colonial Army and this one was the father of Judge John Jones. One brother resided in Baltimore and returned to England, leaving a large amount of real estate which was confiscated by the U.S.A.

"John and another brother moved from New Jersey; the brother procured a farm on Cranes' Nest Creek near Newcastle in Monroe Co. OH. He erected a mill on the stream. He was the father of a large family. The boys were Abraham, Asher, Hamilton, and Lewis. There were at least three girls.

"John Jones settled on Bull Creek, Virginia, (now in Wood County, WV) where about 1794, he married Lillie Benjamin. He moved to the Scioto Valley about 1802 and thence to a farm north of Newark, OH, where his wife, Lillie died in 1802. He with James Atkinson moved their families from near Newark, OH to the Ohio Valley where he bought a farm on Proctor Creek in Virginia (now WV) opposite Clarington, Monroe Co. OH where Sunfish Creek empties into the Ohio River. He then removed and settled on Sunfish Creek at Jonesville, below Cameron, Monroe Co.; here he erected a mill on the farm, which operated as a saw and grist mill."
