LEWISVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
Lewisville High School,
then, Elementary School - 1979
The
above white wooden building was built in Lewisville to serve as a high
school. We believe this building was
constructed about 1911 to take the place of a previous building that was built
in the late 1800s at the corner of Rt. 78 and Old Main Street. This previous building was razed. The high school above served the area until
a new school was built. About 1930 a
new red-brick high school was constructed in
Lewisville and the above wooden school became an elementary school. In addition
to being an elementary school, it continued to serve as a cafeteria and space
for woodworking classes for the high school students. Both buildings are still
standing. The red-brick high school building
is located at the corner of Old Main Street and Back Street. The above white
wooden building is on the adjoining property.
The two buildings are only a few hundred feet from each other.
Later
(around 1958) Skyvue became the focus for consolidating some of the local high
schools. Skyvue opened at Stafford and
the high school students from Lewisville, Graysville, and Bethel High Schools
went to Skyvue at the Stafford location.
In 1966 a new building was constructed on Hartshorn Ridge to house the consolidated
Skyvue High School.
The
white wooden building above that was once a high school then an elementary
school is now (in 2002) being used occasionally for Fire Department activities.
The red-brick high school building was renamed to the Lewisville Community
Center. It is now used for various
functions such as the annual High School Alumni Banquets. The coordinates measured
about 20 feet from the double door seen in this picture above are: Elevation: 1225 above sea level; Latitude: N 39 45.849
and Longitude: W081 12.957
The first graduating class
from the new red-brick Lewisville High School was in 1931. The graduates were: Irene Geldmacher, Lucille Harper, Melba Heft Beulah
Heft, Florence Lumbatis, Edna Pickens, Ruby Lumbatis, Martha Pennell, Grace
Weber, Ildreth Longfellow, Leola Lumbatis, Sennon Zwick and Kermit Longfellow.
