Relatives here were at Ozark on Wednesday to attend the funeral of Miss Lena Burkhart, who passed away on Sunday following a lingering illness. Services were conducted in the Roman Catholic Church by Father Drescher of Miltonsburg and burial was made in the Catholic cemetery.

 

The deceased, a daughter of George and Madgalena Burkhart was born at Ozark, March 31, 1878, where she had spent her life.

 

She is survived by three sisters and two brothers: Cose and Elizabeth Burkhart in the home, Mrs. Anthony Burkhart, Ozark; Adolph Burkhart, Mrs. Harry Flowers, Barnesville.

She married ANTHONY BURKHART October 27, 1874 in Ozark, Ohio, son of JOHANNES BURKHART and KATRINA KELLER. He was born January 26, 1849 in Bruchweiler, Germany, and died January 13, 1912 in Ozark, Ohio.

Mrs. Harry Flowers was called to Ozark, Sunday, by the death of her sister, Mrs. Mary Burkhart, aged resident of that place, who died at her home Sunday morning. She had been in failing health for the pst year but was seriously ill only one week following a cerebral hemorrhage. The deceased was born in Monroe County 88 years ago, a daughter of George and Magdelene Weber Burkhart. She was united in marriage to Anthony Burkhart who repceded her in death over 30 years ago. Her entire life was spent in the Ozark community. Surviving are seven children: Misses Minnie and Molly Burkhart of the home,

Mrs. Albert Haren and Otto Burkhart, Ozark; John Burkhart, Woodsfield, Lawerence A. Burkhart, Washington, DC, and sister Mary Otto, Nazareth, KY. Two daughters are deceased. Two sisters, Mrs. Flowers and Miss Elizabeth Burkhart, Ozark, and one brother, G.C. Burkhart, Ozark; a number of grand

children and great grandchildren are also bereaved. The requiem Mass will be read by her pastor, Rev. George Dresner of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Ozark Wednesday morning at ten o'clock and burial will be made in the church cemetery.

 

Notes for ANTHONY BURKHART:

Anthony was the first of this family to come to the United Statesin 1872; he was naturalized in 1877.

Johann Adam, Johannes, Louis, and Ottillia followed and settled in the German Settlement near

Procter, WV.

They were apparently followed by Johannes and Katrina, their parents. All of these appeared on the

1880 Wetzel County, WV census, except John Adam. Apparently, Johann Adam had moved to Ozark,

Ohio by 1880.

 

Another good and well known citizen of Monroe County passed to his eternal reward in the great beyond last Saturday afternoon, January 13, 1912, when the faithful spirit of Anthony Burkhart, of Ozark, Ohio, returned to the God who gave it.

While Mr. Burkhart had been seriously ill for some time as a sufferer of Bright's disease, his death came as a severe shock to the immediate relatives and his many friends.

Anthony Burkhart was born in Germany if February, 1849, and was therefore almost 68 years old. He came to America when 22 years old and settled in Monroe County where he spent the remainder of his life as a model citizen. He ws married, shortly after coming to this county to a daughter of Mr. George Burkhart of Ozark. To this union, nine children were born..six girls and three boys...all still living as follows: Lawrence, John, Otto, Mrs. Lucille Haren, and Misses Minnie, Amelia, Nellie, Francisca and Augusta all at home except John and Lucille who are married and live at Ozark.

Deceased was a member of the Catholic Church at Ozark and remained a devoted member until death.

The funeral was held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock, Rev. Fr. Igel of Miltonsburg officiating. A large concourse of relatives and friends attended, including St. Sylvester's choir of Woodsfield, which rendered appropriate music for the occasion.

The family have the sincere sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.

Miss Burkhart died Thursday afternoon at Lewisville Rest Home, where she had been a patient for five days.

Born at Ozark, November 23, 1877, she was a daughter of Anthony and Mary Burkhart. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and of the Catholic Women's Club.

Miss Burkhart leaves three brothers, Otto of Ozark, John of Woodsfield, and Lawrence of Washington, DC; and a sister, Sister Mary Otto of Cincinnati.

Friends may call at Harper-Campbell Funeral Home here after 1 p.m. Saturday. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Nellie B. Zwick, 51, died Wednesday evening at the home of her brother Lawrence Burkhart at Washington, DC. Her body was brought here Friday and taken to the home of her mother, Mrs. Mary Burkhart at Ozark. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church at Ozark Saturday morning and interment made in the cemetery. Mrs. Zwick was the daughter of Anthony and Mary Burkhart and was born at Ozark. She was a resident of Washington, DC, for about 25 years and during that time, was employed by the federal government. Her husband, Benjamin Zwick died eight monts ago and at the time of his death, Mrs. Zwick was seriously ill in a hospital. After being dismissed from the hospital she spent several months at her mother's home returning to the capital city about six weeks ago. She leaves her aged mother and four sisters: Misses Amelia and Minnie Burkhart, Mrs. Lucy Haren all of Ozark, and Sister Mary Otto of Nazarus, KY: three brothers, Lawrence Burkhart of Washington, DC; John Burkhart of Woodsfield, and Otto Burkhart of Ozark. Mrs. Harry Flowers and Adolph Burkhart, this city, are an aunt and uncle of the deceased.

 

Notes for BENJAMIN EDWARD ZWICK:

Benjamin E. Zeick, son of Peter and Theresia Zwick, was born at Lewisville, Monroe Co, Ohio July 23, 1886, and departed this life at his home at 3805 W Street, Northwest, Washington, DC. on March 2, 1937, at the age of 50 years seven months and 23 days.

He had been confined to Sibley Hospital from Sepember 17, 1936, until Christmas at which time he was removed to his home where he remained until his death.

He wa enlised in the US Army on September 21,1917, at Cleveland, OHio; he served overseas from June 22, 1918 to June 27, 1919 and was honorably discharged July 8, 1919 at Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ohio. He served thegreater part of his enlistment in the Quartermaster Corps, the first few months having been served in the infantry.

Upon his return from military service, he engaged in the laundry business in Cleveland, Ohio. He took up residence in Washington, DC in 1927, and since that time has held the position of Assistant Superintendent fo the Manhattan Laundry Corporation.

On April 23, 1927, he was united in marriage to Nellie Burkhart, of Ozark, Ohio, by Rev. Fitzgerald,pastor of St. Stephen's Catholic Church at Washington.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nellie B. Zwick, his mother, Mrs. Theresia Zwick of Miltonsburg, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Ed. Reischman of Miltonsburg, and Mrs. Leonard Bishop of Louisville, Stark County, Ohio; two brothers, Isadore and Clem, both of Louisville, Stark Co., Ohio.

Funeral Services were conducted by Rev. George Drescher at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at Ozark, March 4th, and interment was made at the church cemetery. Military services were conducted by Monroe Post #87 of the American Legion of Woodsfield.

Sister Mary Otto, 82, of the Sisters of Charity, Nazareth, KY, died Saturday morning, December 4, 1971, at five o'clock, after a brief illness. She had undergone surgery for a hip fracture on November 4th.

She was born at Ozark, January14, 1889, the daughter of Anthony and Mary Burkhart.

Sister Mary Otto was a member of the Sisters of Charity for fifty-three years. She taught for many years in parochial schools in Martins Ferry, Bridgeport and Bellaire.

Surviving are two brothers, Otto Burkhart of Ozark and Lawrence Burkhart, of Washington, DC, and several nieces and nephews.Five sister and one brother preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at three o'clock in the chapel at Nazareth, KY. Burial was in the cemetery at the Mother House.

Funeral services for Theobald Burkhard, a former resident of Monroe and Belmont Counties, were held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock from the St. Nicholas Catholic Church, in Zanesville, with a High Mass of Requiem by Rev. Father Bender. The funeral sermon was preached by Ref. Father A.L. Leininger. Burial was made in Mount Olives Cemetery.

 

Mr. Burkhard died at his home, 2015 Neil Ave., Zanesville, Tuesday night , June 16, at 11:20 p.m. o'clock following an illness of several months duration, of diabetes.

 

He was born at Burkhart, Ohio, June 3, 1857, the son of George and Magdalene Weber Burkhard. The greater part of his life was spent in farming and he was a life-long member of the Catholic Church.

 

On November 8, 1887, at St. Mary's Church, Fulda, he was married to Caroline Singer, who survives him.

Mr. Burkhard was the father of fourteen children: Mrs. George Baker, Mrs. Carl Himmelspach, Mrs. N. J. Malone, Mrs. Leo J. Haren, Julius, Raymond and Alphonse, all of Zanesville; Jerome, Carl and Evaline of the home, Mrs. Andrew Danner of Canton, Mrs. C.H. Smith, San Diego, CA, Mrs. E. J. Pfeffer of Temperanceville. One son, Herbert, died in 1924 at the age of 23.

 

The following brothers and sisters survive: Adolph Burkhard, Mrs. Harry Flowers, Barnesville, Mrs. Mary Burkhart, Misses Elizabeth and Lena Burkhard, G.C. Burkhard, Ozark. He also leaves thirty-five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mrs. Theobald D. Burkhart, 77, a highly respected and a former resident of this community, passed away at her home in Zanesville, Friday, following several months illness.

Caroline Singer Burkhart is well known to our people as she lived south of Barnesville for a number of years and was a widow of Theobald Burkhart, who preceded her in death six years ago. In 1922, they moved to Zanesville, where he died and she has since lived in that city and she was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church.

She is survived by eight daughters and four sons: Mrs. George Baker, Mrs. N.J.Malone, Mrs. Leo Haren,

Zanesville, Mrs. Evalena Burkhart in the home, Mrs. E. J. Pfeifer, Temperanceville, Mrs. Carl Himmelspach, Thornville, Mrs. Andrew Danner, Canton, Mrs. C.H. Smith, San Diego,CA.; Julius, Raymond, Alphonse, Jerome Burkhart Zanesville, She also leaves four brothers and two sisters, 37 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren.

Furnerl Services wee held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Nicholas Catholic Church and burial was

made in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Mrs. Harry Flowers and Mrs. Joe Burkhart are sisters-in-law of the deceased.

Margaret Himmelspach, 94, a resident of Zanesville, and a former resident of St. Clairsville, died Monday at the Sunny View Nursing Home, Zanesville. She was born July 7, 1891 in Ozark, Monroe County, a daughter of the late Theobald and Caroline Singer Burkhard.

 

She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Zanesville, and past president of the Diocese of Council of Catholic Women for the Dioceses of Steubenville.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Himmelspach, in 1953.

 

Surviving are four sisters; Agnes Baker, Genevieve Malone, both of Zanesville, Dorothy Danner of Canton and Justine Fenton of San Diego, CA; a brother, Raymond R. Burkhard of Canton.

 

Friends may call at the Hillis Funeral Home, Zanesville 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, with the Rev. Richard Metzger the celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Olive Cemetery, Zanesville. Christian Wake services will be conducted Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Notes for ADOLPH BURKHART:

The death of Adolph Burkhart, a highly repected and well known citizen, occured at his home on West Main Street, Monday night, following several years of declining health and critically for past three months.

Deceased, a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Burkhart, was born June 24, 1863, at Burkhart Station, Monroe County, where he lived in early life. He was first married to Katherine Arnold who died in 1919 and several years later, he married Katherine Tuefel, who preceded him in death in June 1936. With exception of a few years in Braddock, PA., He spent his later years in and around Barnesville and was a worthy member of the Church of the Assumption and of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Grant Scott, Barnesville and Mary Burkhart of Ozark; two granddaughters, Martha Lee Scott and Mrs. Clifford Gill of Barnesville. He also leaves three sisters and one brother: Mrs. Harry Flowers, Barnesville, Elizabeth and C. A. Burkhart of Ozark.

 

The body in charge of Campbell Funeral directors was moved to his late home Wednesday evening and this morning will be take to Church of the Assumption, where requiem high mass will be conducted at 9:30 in charge of Rev. Father Herman Tague. The funeral cortege will then go to Ozark Chruch where services will be concluded and burial made.

Mrs. Katherine Burkhart, the good wife of Adolph Burkhart, died suddenly at their home about two and one half miles south of this place, Sunday morning. For several years prior to her derath her condition was not the best, but at the time of her demise she was in apparently good health, and heart failure is given as the cause of her death.

She was probably 53 years of age and besides her husband, is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Grant Scott, Woodsfield, and Miss Mary Burkhart of Ozark.. The body, accompanied by Father William Robben, was taken to Ozark where the funeral and burial service took place at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Flowers, Mr. and Mrs. Will Martin, Miss Lena Burkhart and Messrs. Joseph and Herbert Burkhart, relatives of the deceased of this place, attended the funeral.

 

Notes for CATHERINE GARVEY:

The death of Mrs. Adolph Burkhart occurred early this Thursday morning athe Community Hospital where she had been taken a few hours before for treatment. She had been ill for the past month with gall trouble and a severe heart attack was the direct cause of her death.

The deceased was born near Batesville December 26, 1859, and was a daughter of Thomas and Bridget Garvy. She was married twice; the first time to Celestine Teufel of Temperanceville, who preceded her in death a number of years ago. Five children were born to them and all are living; Mrs. Fred Armbruster, Mrs. Albert Wagner, Barnesville; Messrs. Anthony, Louis and Gus Teufel, Wheeling. Fifteen years ago,

Mrs. Teufel was married to Mr. Adolph Burkhart of Barnesville, who survives her. She is the last of her immediate family but besides her husband and above named children, she leaves seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Burkhart was a devout member of the Roman Catholic Church and was a kind and clever neighbor. She was well and favorably known as she has lived in Barnesville the most of her life. Funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Father M. W. Sullivan at the Church of the Assumption Saturday morning at nine o'clock. Burial will be made in Beaver Cemetery at Batesville in charge of the Campbell Funeral directors.

The sudden death fo Joseph A. Burkhart of South Gardner St., which occurred at his home Thursday afternoon, November 16, was a great shock to his relatives and friends and to the community in general. Mr. Burkhart had not been very well, but no alarm ws give for his condition and on Wednesday Mrs. Burkhart had been called to Wheeling on account of the unexpected death of her brother, Mr. Thomas Kearney. Mr. Burkhart became worse tht evening and consulted with a physician but as he did not improve by Thursday, he called in his sister, Mrs. Harry Flowers, who was with him when he passed away at 1:45 that afternoon. His wife was notified and returned home immediately.

 

Joseph A.Burkhart was born near Ozark, May 2, 1867, and was a son fo George B. and Magdalena Burkhart. he has been a resident of Barnesville for many years and was employed at Watt Car Wheel Company. He was a clever, likeable man and had a number of friends. Besides his wife, who was Miss Nellie Kearney, he leaves one daughter, Mrs. Marcella Thimnes of Chicago, and a stepson, Mr. john F. Murphy, Washington, DC. He is also survived by four sisters and three brothers: mrs. Anthony Burkhart,Misses Lena and Elizabeth Burkhart, Ozark, Mrs. Harry Flowers, Adolph Burkhart, Barnesville, George C. Burkhart, Ozark and Theobald Burkhart, Zanesville.

 

Funeral service was conducted by Rev. Father M.W. Sullivan Monday morning in the Church of the Assumption, of which the deceased was a devout member, and burial was made in the Ozark Cemetery, following a short service in his mother church nearby.

John G. Burkhart, 83, of 300 South Sycamore Street, Woodsfield, died Thursday morning, February 23, 1967, at his home following a brief illness.

He was bron January 20, 1884, at Ozark, Ohio, the son of the late Anthony and Mry Burkhardt Burkhart.

Mr. Burkhart was a retired oil field worker and for the past twelve years had been custodian of St. Sylvester's Catholic Church, Woodsfield.

He was a member of St. Sylvester's Church and a member of the Holyl Name Society and the Purgatorial Society.

Surviving are his wife, Stella Haren Burkhart; three sons, Gervase H. Burkhart, of Mission, TX, Ambrose Burkhart of Lincoln, NE. and Joseph Burkhart of Kernersville, NC; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Dorothy Froehlich of the home; eight grandchildren; one sister, Sister Mary Otto of Covington, KY and two brothers, Otto A. Burkhart of Beallsville, R2, and Laurence A. Burkhart of Wshington, DC.

A Solemn Reguiem Mass was solemnized on Monday morning at 10 o;clock in St. Sylvester's Church with the Very Reverend Monsignor Robert A. Brown as celebrant. Rev. Albert Kunkel, of Cleveland, a grand nephew of Mr. Burkhart, was deacon and Mr. Mark Froehlich was acting subdeacon.

The following dignitaries were present for the funeral Mass: Very Reverend Monsignor William R. Wearsch, Rector of St. John Vianney Seminary, Bloomingdale; Rev. Ronald J. Cox, professor at St.John Vianney Seminary, and Rev. Joseph Finan, Pastor of St. Joseph's Church, Burkhart.

The Mass was sung by the Sisters and student of St. Sylvester Church.

Burial was in the church cemetery with the Michener Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
