February 17, 2002:
After canceling the January meeting due to inclement weather, the
Monroe County Genealogy Chapter held its first meeting of 2002 on February 17,
2002 at the Monroe County District Library Conference Room. Several items of
business were discussed including the approval of the budget for 2002.
The
hard binding order has returned from Crawford Bindery. Most of the books in
this order were from the family history section. President Karen Romick
expressed the chapter s appreciation for the generosity of its members who have
contributed to this long-range project. The binding has added to the
attractiveness of the room as well as adding durability and protection to the
items.
Closson Press will begin the printing of
Catharine Fedorchak s Family Research in Monroe County Volume
6. Publication of the book should be in March. In other publication
news, the Obituaries Volume 1 book has been reprinted and is available for
sale.
The next meeting will be March 17 at 2:00
p.m. in the Monroe County District Library Conference room. Karen Romick will
speak on the German-speaking heritage of Monroe County.

The Monroe County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical
Society held its monthly meeting on May 19, 2002, at the Monroe County District
Library in Woodsfield. The guest
speaker was Rebecca Morgan who spoke on Using Transportation Routes to Locate
Ancestors.
In the business session, a discussion was held on
the church records preservation project.
Members are working to locate church records in the county and acquire
the church s permission to have these records preserved through microfilming.
In
publishing news, the Wayne Township Cemetery book has entered the proofreading
stage and should be ready for publication in late July. The seventh volume of the Family Research
in Monroe County by Catharine Fedorchak will be published later this
fall. There are three more volumes to
be published in this series.
The Chapter will purchase the remaining copies of
Shirley Neiswonger s book, Monroe County, Ohio Marriages 1867-1877. These books will be sold by the
chapter.
The chapter will explore the possibility of
publishing a pictorial history of Monroe County to coincide with the
Bicentennial of Ohio.
The June meeting
will be held at the home of Shirley Neiswonger in Beallsville. We will meet at the Veterans Memorial Park
in Beallsville and then travel to Shirley s home. It will be a covered dish lunch and a work session. We will help Shirley organize the back
issues of the Navigator.
The
Monroe County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society met on Sunday, July 21,
2002.
In
updates, it was announced that the chapter has purchased both the CD and the
microfilm of the 1930 Monroe County census and both have been placed in the
Research Room of the library for use by patrons.
The
Wayne Township Cemetery book will be published next month. Work continues on the Research Room as a new
cataloging system has been implemented.
The winners of the Catharine Fedorchak
Award for the winning 4-H project in genealogy were announced. Arica Myers was the winner of the Senior
Division and Tasha Nething was the winner of the Junior Division. The young
ladies will be given a plaque and a $50 savings bond at the First Families &
Pioneer Families Reception held following the September meeting.
There
have been four applications approved for the First Families induction this
year. The deadline for application for
2002 will be August 30.
At
the August meeting we will discuss an idea presented regarding publishing a book
honoring the Monroe County service men who have lost their lives in
battle. This book will be published for
next year s bicentennial celebration of Ohio.
Dan Grammer was the guest
speaker. He spoke on Researching Court
Records.
Next month s speaker will be
Roger Pickenpaugh, author of River on a Rampage: The 1936 Flood.

The Monroe County Genealogical Chapter held
its annual First Families and Pioneer Families of Monroe County reception
following the chapter s regular September monthly meeting. First Families is a department of the
genealogical chapter and is open to anyone who is a descendant of an individual
who settled in Monroe County by December 31, 1830. Pioneer Families honors individuals who settled in Monroe County
by December 31, 1850.
Five new members were inducted into First Families making a total of 99
members and 136 ancestors that have been recorded in this group. The five new members were Alice Jones Menkel
of Henderson, Nevada, who was inducted through her ancestors, James Jones and
Daniel O. C. Jones. Her sons, David
Menkel of Henderson and Gary Menkel of Las Vegas, were also inducted. Melvin Eugene Huffman of Glenmore,
Pennsylvania, became a member though his ancestor Solomon Huffman and Mary
DeSalvo of Aberdeen, Washington, became a member through her descendancy from
the Dye family of Perry Township and also Ary Ridgeway Dye. Additionally,
Melvin Huffman became a member of Pioneer Families of Monroe County.
The Catharine Fedorchak
Award was also presented to the winners of the 4-H genealogy fair project. Arica Myers, a senior at Monroe Central High
School, won the Senior Division award.
Tasha Nething, a freshman at River High School, won the Junior Division
Award.
The next monthly meeting of
the genealogy chapter will be Sunday, October 20, at 2:00 p.m. at the
conference room of the Monroe County District Library. Harley Dakin will speak on the Cline Family
DNA Study. More information on the
