John Boyd Hardin

John Boyd Hardin, 89, Baltimore, Ohio, died Aug. 7, 2001, at his residence. He was born June 20, 1912, in Kentucky, a son of Rev. E.C. Hardin and Rev. Mamie Hardin.

He was a graduate of McDermott High School, Ohio University and the Ohio State University. John "Jay" "JB" "Jake" was a teacher, coach administrator and mentor of everyone at Bartlett, Hannibal, Pickaway, Ashville, Washington Court House, Sabina, Miami Trace and Liberty-Union. He attended the Christ United Methodist Church, belonged to the Lancaster Rotary and the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite. He resided in Baltimore [Ohio] and Sarasota, Florida.

Surviving are his wife, Hermalee Hardin; son, Dr. Charles Hardin and his wife, Marian; daughter, Mrs. Richard (Roberta Tosca) Deckerd; grandchildren Kent (Susanne) Hardin, Jeff (Julie) Hardin, Erin (Greg) Seimer, Ann Miller (Randy) Lein, Rob (Beth Miller, Deanna Miller (Don) Murray; 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine Tisher, whom he married in 1934 and she died in 1967.

Friends were received Aug. 9 at the Johnson-Smith Funeral Home, Baltimore, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Funeral services were held Aug. 10 at the Christ United Methodist, Baltimore, with Pastor Benjamin A. Foulk officiating. Caring cremation followed the service.

 

Ferrell (Sr.) Vanwy

Ferrell Vanwy, Sr., 76, Newark, died Sept. 10, 2001, at Selma Markowicz Center. He was born March 23, 1925, in Woodsfield.

He was a member of the First Trinity Assembly of God Church, a WW II Army veteran; was a heavy equipment mechanic and welder for various contractors and member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 18. He worked in the oil field for several years with local drilling contractors following his military service.

Surviving are his wife, Helen L. Breese Vanwy, Newark; two daughters, Mrs. George (Janet) Fisher, Thornville, Mrs. Brice (Donna) Shumaker, Newark; two sons, Ferrell, Jr. and his wife, Kathy Vanwy, Newark, Charles E. Mason, Newark; brother Kenneth Vanwy, and his wife Betty, Clearwater, Fla.; sister-in-law, Wilma Jean Vanwy, Heath; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Sabina Moose Vanwy; a brother, Donald; sister, Hazel.

Friends were received Sept. 11 at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, Newark, where funeral services were held Sept. 12, with Pastor Charles E. Mason and Pastor Don Moshgat officiating. Burial in Brushy Fork Cemetery.

Ada B. Green

    Ada B. Green, 98, of Stow, formerly of Woodsfield, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at Stow-Glen Retirement Center.
    She was born Sept. 21, 1902, near Jerusalem, daughter of the late Charles H. and Myrta (Gibbons) Baker. Mrs. Green attended Woodsfield High School and Muskingum College. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard A. Green, who died in 1987; and a son, Dale Loren Green.
    She leaves a son, Charles (Rebecca) Green of Akron; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
    Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services will be 1 p.m. Friday.
    Burial will be in Jerusalem Cemetery.

Norma D. Harmon

 Norma D. Harmon, 76, of Woodsfield, formerly of Belpre, died Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2001) at her home.
    She was born March 1, 1924, in Bloomfield, daughter of the late Samuel and Mary (McVey) Dickson.
    Mrs. Harmon retired from Peoples Bank and Trust Co. of Belpre, where she had served for 20 years as a bookkeeper and teller. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Parkersburg, W.Va. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Richard Dickson; a sister, Gladys (Dickson) Ridgeway.
    She leaves her husband, Eugene E. Harmon, whom she married May 25, 1941; two daughters, Sherry Brownrigg of Arnold, Md., and Jo Ellen of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Wanda Hill of Woodsfield; five grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
    Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield. Private services will be Friday at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

Golda Billman Straight

    Golda Billman Straight, 98, of Antioch, died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) at the home of her daughter in Greenfield, Ind.
    She was born April 27, 1902, near Lewisville, daughter of the late John Hamilton Billman and Sarah Elizabeth Kelly Billman.
    She was a retired teacher, having taught 17 years in Monroe County Schools. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Irwin M. Straight, in January 1979; four sisters, Bessie Schell, Myrtie Draper, Susie Mallett and Marjorie Busch; two brothers, Fred Billman and Frank Billman; and a grandson, Dana Stephen DeVoe.
    She leaves three daughters, Eileen Stephenson of Marion; Mrs. Robert (Claribel) DeVoe of Greenfield and Marguerite Winkle of Harbor Beach, Mich.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
    Friends and family may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services will be 10 a.m. Saturday with Minister Sam Bartrug officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery.

Rolland Eugene Kenney

    Rolland Eugene Kenney, 86, of Antioch Community, Woodsfield, died Friday (Jan. 5, 2001) at Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville, W.Va.
    He was born Nov. 7, 1914, in Monroe County, son of the late Andrew and Beulah (Brown) Kenney.
    Mr. Kenney attended Plainview Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Harold, Joe and George Kenney; a sister, Marie Daugherty.
    He leaves his wife, Mildred (Hooper) Kenney of Antioch; a son, Joseph Hooper of Michigan; a brother, Ronald Kenney of Antioch; three grandchildren; a great-grandson.
    Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday with Minister Tim Fleeman officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery, Antioch.

Martha McVicker

    Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, for Martha A. McVicker, 87, of Cambridge, who died Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2001) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. The Rev. Ken Mansfield will officiate. Burial will be in Guernsey Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
    She was born Nov. 21, 1913, in Langs, daughter of the late Alonzo and Dottie (Alexander) Simmons.
    Mrs. McVicker had worked at Bayes Restaurant in Woodsfield and cleaned houses. She was a Methodist by faith.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard D. McVicker, who died December 26, 1987. They were married in 1950. Also deceased are three sisters, Hazel Smith, Carrie Elliott and Katie Sims; three brothers, Frank McCaslin, Bryce Simmons and John Simmons.
    She leaves a son, Charles Antill of Boynton Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Shirley Callihan of Cambridge and Martha Cole of Beacon Falls, Conn.; four grandchildren, Tommy Joe Gravens, David Callihan, Kevin Callihan and Michelle (Callihan) Crews; and six great-grandchildren.

Sherry R. Dies

    She was born July 7, 1937, in Salem, daughter of the late Oscar and Iona (Moffett) Harsh. Mrs. Dies was a homemaker and a Protestant by faith.
    She was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Barclay. She leaves her husband, James M. Dies, whom she married April 15, 1975; a son, Ray Allen Blythe of Cambridge; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Donald (Tammy) Harton of Jerusalem and Tracy LeFleme of Salem; a stepson, Timothy Dies of Salem; four step-grandchildren, George Tomlin, Alicia Tomlin, Joey LeFleme and Johnny LeFleme.

Clarence Howell

    Clarence G. "Dutch" Howell, 74, Moore Ridge Road, Jerusalem, OH died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus.
    Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, 100 S. Paul St., Woodsfield, with minister John Hamilton officiating. Burial will be at Ozark Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call today (Friday) from 2-9 at the funeral home.
    He was born Oct. 31, 1926, in Wayne County, to Andrew and Ova (Myers) Howell.
    Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Dorothy (Gallaher) Howell of Jerusalem; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and John Yontz of Ozark, Helen and Rocky Carpenter of Barnesville, Jean and Richard Hughes of Jerusalem and Connie and Larry Richter of Sardis; seven grandchildren, and four brothers, John, Jack and George Howell, all of Orrville and Vernon

Earl F. Ankrom, Sr.

    Earl F. Ankrom, Sr., 51, of Woodsfield, died Friday (Jan. 26, 2001) at Barnesville Hospital, Barnesville.
    He was born April 4, 1949, in Barnesville, son of Cora (Jackson) Ankrom of Woodsfield, and the late Hila Foster Ankrom.
    Mr. Ankrom was a graduate of Skyvue High School near Graysville. He was a former construction worker and a former welder for Watt Car and Wheel in Barnesville. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War.
    He was preceded in death by an infant brother; an uncle, Ole Jackson.
    He leaves his wife, Sandra I. (Anderson) Ankrom, whom he married June 17, 1972; a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Amanda) Shaw of Woodsfield; three sons, Earl F. (Jaime) Ankrom, Jr. of Stafford, Timothy R. (Emanuela) Ankrom of Sardinia,
and Arlis C. Ankrom of the home; two brothers, Richard (Connie) Ankrom of Woodsfield, and Paul (Rita) Ankrom of Florida; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. No calling hours will be observed. Burial will be at the
convenience of the family. Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, is handling the arrangements.

Ronald LeRoy Foster

    Ronald LeRoy Foster, 84, of Woodsfield, Antioch Community, formerly of Stow, died Sunday (Jan. 28, 2001) at his home.
    He was born July 27, 1916, in Weston, W.Va., son of the late Tucker and Dora (Cosner) Foster.
    Mr. Foster was a former guard officer at the Ravenna Arsenal, prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Sea Bea Division during World War II. He was a self-employed building contractor. He was a member and pastor master of the Moriah Lodge 105, Free and Accepted Masons in Powhatan; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Steubenville; Osiris Shrine Temple in Wheeling, W.Va.; Steubenville Indian Patrol; and West Virginia National Guard.
    He was past commander of the Barnesville Chapter of Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of VFW Post 6387 in New Matamoras; Knights Templar 047, Cambridge; Past Masters Association; Bel-Mon Shrine Club, Wheeling, W.Va.; International Association Legions of Honor, Wheeling, W.Va.; Order of Eastern Star, Captina Chapter, Powhatan; Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons of Ohio in Cambridge; and the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masons of Ohio; Guernsey Council 74, Cambridge.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Helen (Dworshak) Foster, on July 16, 1993; a son, Ronald Lee Foster; a brother, Raymond Foster; two sisters, Mabel Spencer and Marie Jamison.  He leaves two daughters, Connie Sellers of Cleveland and Julia Ann Roby of the home; two sisters, Ruth Mildred Smith of Jane Lew, W.Va., and Maxine Jean Jackson of Cuyahoga Falls; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
    Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Paul Ferguson officiating. Masonic services will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery, Antioch. Full military graveside services will be conducted by New Matamoras VFW.

Homer D. Yommer

    Homer D. Yommer, 68, of Lewisville, died Saturday (Jan. 27, 2001) at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.
    He was born Oct. 13, 1932, in Grantsville, Md., son of the late Bruce and Jessie (Warnick) Yommer.
    Mr. Yommer retired from Ford Motor Co., Lorain, where he served as a repairman. He was a member of Calais Church in Calais, and American Legion Post 214 in Grantsville, Md. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War.
    He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley L. Yommer, on died Sept. 1, 1966; two sisters, Wilda Yommer and Helen Stoffoni; four brothers, Osborne Yommer, David Yommer, Harold Yommer and Bruce Oney Yommer.
    He leaves his wife, Emma Jean (Slone) Yommer, whom he married Aug. 30, 1986; two daughters, Marla Ann Ahmed of Lorain and Sara Katherine Thomas of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sons, Homer D. Yommer, Jr. and Donald Eugene Yommer,
both of Lorain; two sisters, Wanda Gross of Paw Paw, W.Va., and Norma Ruth Quail of Rome, W.Va.; six brothers, Joe Yommer of Olney Mills, Md., Jack Yommer of Sheffield Lake, Harry Yommer of Topeka, Kan., Hubert Yommer of

Ruth K. Huffman

    Ruth K. Huffman, 86, of Monroe Manor, Woodsfield, died Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge.
    She was born April 19, 1914, in Monroe County, daughter of the late Clarence and Lorena (Baker) Norris.
    Mrs. Huffman was a member of First Baptist Church of Woodsfield. She was a charter member of the Eagles Lodge and the Pythian Sisters Lodge, both of Woodsfield.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Huffman, on November 16, 1994; a sister, Genevieve Price; and a brother, Walton Norris.   She leaves two sons, Ron (Billie Jean) Huffman and Wayne (Karen) Huffman, both of Woodsfield; two daughters, Mrs. Bob (Beverly) Marmie of Barnesville, and Mrs. Bill (Velma) Guess of Columbus; a brother, Lester Norris of Canton; a sister, Eva Jean Brown of Woodsfield; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Wilbur E. Buck Jackson

    Wilbur E. Buck Jackson, 73, of Marietta, Ohio, died Monday (Jan. 22,2001) in Selby General Hospital.
    He was born Sept. 17, 1927 in Woodsfield but made his home in Stafford for most of his life. He was a graduate of Elk Local High School and serviced in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was later employed as a superintendent by Columbia Gas Co., for 35 years until his retirement. He also owned and operated the Stafford General Store.  Mr. Jackson found a great deal of pleasure working on his oil leases and enjoyed making handcrafted items from various metals. He was a member of Gilman United Methodist Church, Stafford Masonic Lodge 300 F. and A. M., and Masterton Lodge, Order of Eastern Star.
His home was in Marietta the past 8 and one-half years.
    He was preceded in death by his stepfather and mother, Landseer and Margaret Daniels, and a stepsister, Wanda Barclay.
    He leaves his wife, Ruth (Stephen Mallett) Jackson, whom he married August 15, 1992; two sons by a previous marriage, Donald (Dianne) Jackson of Papillon, Neb.; Jerry (Ressa) Jackson of Woodsfield; three stepdaughters, Cynthia (Douglas) Wittekind of Newport News, Va.; Beverly (John) Huffman, and Nancy (Allen) Tubaugh all of Marietta; a stepbrother Mark (Mary) Daniels of Lower Salem; two stepsisters, Laura (Bill) Hoffheins of Southgate, Mich.; Myrle Lankford of Marietta; four grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.
    Services were held at Gilman United Methodist Church with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Marietta. Memorial services were conducted at McClure-Schafer Funeral Home by the Lebanon Order of Eastern Star and Stafford Lodge 300, F. and A

    Leonard C. Leasure, 76, of Summerfield, Ohio, died Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2001) at his home.
    He was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Barnesville, son of the late William and Anna Marie (Brown) Leasure.
    Mr. Leasure was a retired laborer. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II and the Korean War. He was a Methodist by faith. He was a member of American Legion Post 415, Summerfield, and VFW Post 4721, Caldwell.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva M. (Hayes) Leasure, on August 3, 1982; two sons, Kim and Greg Leasure; three brothers, Carl, Earl and Kenneth Leasure; two sisters, Betty and Geneva Leasure.
    He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Anthony (Robin) Jordon of Dayton, Mrs. Kenneth (Melinda) Hoyt of Graysville and Bev Leasure of Lewisville; two sons, Gary (Cathy) Leasure of Summerfield and Calvin (Melissa) Leasure of Sparr, Fla.; three sisters, Ruth Ann Leasure of Caldwell, and Dorothy Shafer and Lucille Long, both of Sarahsville; three brothers, Dick Leasure of Senecaville, and Eugene Leasure and Raymond Leasure, both of Caldwell; 23 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
    Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Brubach-Watters Funeral Home, Summerfield. Military graveside services will be at Mt. Tabor Cemetery near Summerfield, at a later date.

Viola I. Rothacher

    She was born Aug. 26, 1912, in Green Township, Monroe County, daughter of the late John and Sarah (Haslam) Rothacher. Miss Rothacher was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in Sardis. She was preceded in death by three
brothers, John, Clarence and Edward Rothacher; four sisters, Freda Kocher, Elizabeth Rothacher, Ophelia Ruble and Ethel Green. She leaves five nephews, Ronald Rothacher and Loren Rothacher, both of Sardis, Carl Kocher of New Martinsville, W.Va., Vernon Ischy of Lewisville and Russell Rothacher of Shadyside; two nieces, Virginia Campbell of New Philadelphia and Delores Smith of Sardis.

Hilda M. Burkhart

WOODSFIELD Hilda M. Burkhart, 74, of Woodsfield, died Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2001) at Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center, Wheeling, W.Va. She was born June 5, 1926, near Miltonsburg, daughter of the late Clemence
and Victoria (Carpenter) Butler. Mrs. Burkhart was a homemaker and a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, where she was a member of the Purgatorial Society and the Catholic Women s Club. She was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Ladies Auxiliary of Woodsfield.
She leaves her husband, Herman J. Burkhart, whom she married June 8, 1943; a daughter, Mrs. Frank (Marlene) Yonak, Jr. of Centerville; three sons, Donald (Marlene) Burkhart of Malaga, Gary (Victoria) Burkhart of Woodsfield and Terry (Carol) Burkhart of Raleigh Durham, N.C.; a brother, Vernon (Cinderella) Butler of Woodsfield; a sister, Mrs. Glenn (Hazel) Kanzigg of Beallsville; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

She was born July 14, 1965, in Barnesville, daughter of Bobbie (Vaden) Cannon of Woodsfield and the late Clint Cannon.
Mrs. Christman was a homemaker and member of Woodsfield Church of Christ. She was a 1983 graduate of Woodsfield High School. She leaves her husband, Randall A. Christman, whom she married Sept. 18, 1986; a daughter, Katelyn A. Christman; and a son, Samuel Cannon Christman, both of the home; two brothers, Lamar (Denise) Cannon of Lebanon, Tenn., and Neal (Stacey) Cannon of St. Clairsville; maternal grandmother, Ruby Vaden Lambert of Maryville, Tenn.; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bus Jones, 90, of Lore City, who died Monday (Feb. 12, 2001) at Cambridge Health and Rehabilitation Center, Cambridge. Evangelist Bruce Daugherty will officiate. He was born Oct. 27, 1910, in Old Washington, son of the late Thomas Arthur and Trudie Alice (Brookover) Jones.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Church of Christ, 10th Street and Clairmont Avenue, Cambridge. He was a farmer, raising hogs, cattle, sheep and was a beekeeper. He was a graduate of Lore City High School. He was a member of the Cambridge City Band and the 4-H Sheep Club. He served as supervisor of the Soil Conservation Service for 10 years. He served as the
school board clerk for more than 20 years in the Wills Local, Zane Trace and East Guernsey school districts. He was Wills Township clerk for 17 years and was a 30-year Guernsey County honey bee inspector. He was a big game hunter for such wildlife as deer, bear and moose.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Glenna (Dearth) Jones, who died Dec. 24, 1998. They were married June 13, 1940. Also deceased are four brothers, O.R. Jones, Learny Jones, Wayne Jones and B.K. Jones. He leaves two sisters, Golda McGaughy of Byesville and Eleanor Barnhardt of Hilliard; brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Doris Dearth of Lore City; a
sister-in-law, Evelyn Roth of Bellaire; several nieces and nephews.

She was born Dec. 23, 1905, near Woodsfield, daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Schumacher) Paulus. Mrs. Paulus retired from Economy Store, Woodsfield, where she served as a clerk. She was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Woodsfield, where she was a member of Purgatorial Society.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Hilda E. Paulus; a brother, Francis J. Paulus; a sister-in-law, Freeda Paulus.
She leaves two nieces, Rita Rodgers of Belpre, and Catherine Paulus of Woodsfield; four nephews, Robert Paulus of Lancaster, John Paulus and Edwin Paulus, both of Woodsfield, Ralph Paulus of Hockessin, Del., several great-nieces and nephews.

He was born Jan. 29, 1913, near Stafford, son of the late Marion Ira and Emma May (Lumbatis) Hanson. Mr. Hanson was a 1932 graduate of Franklin Local High School, Stafford, and also Wheeling Barber College in Wheeling, W.Va. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II from January 1943 to February 1946 in the European Theatre. He was a retired barber, having barbered for approximately 50 years in Zanesville, Martins Ferry and Woodsfield. He worked locally from 1946 to 1990 in the Everett Briggs Barber Shop, Woodsfield. He was a member of Sutherland Methodist Church, Lewisville. He was a former member of Knights of Pythias, and past master and 50 year member of Stafford Masonic Lodge 300, Free and Accepted Masons, Stafford. He was an avid bowler and golfer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Louisa (McVay) Hanson, who died Sept. 14, 1999; and a brother, Marion LeRoy Hanson. Mrs. Jackson was a member of Neuhart Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Jackson, on Dec. 19, 1994; two daughters, Delores and Mary Jane; five brothers; and two sisters. WOODSFIELD Lester Francis Kenney, 75, of Economy Borough, Pa., formerly of Graysville, died Saturday (Feb. 24, 2001) at Heritage Valley Health System, Sewickley Valley Hospital.
He was born Oct. 21, 1925, in Graysville, son of the late Francis Marion and Coral (Gill) Kenney.
Mr. Kenney retired from American Bridge Co., where he served as a crane operator. He was a member of Hopewell Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Hopewell Township.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II, and was a member of Local 1270 United Steelworkers of America.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Gertrude Waura, Augusta Smoot and Hilda Coplan.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Jane (Weddle) Kenney of Economy Borough; a son, Paul (Helen) Kenney of Athens; four daughters, Jean Nelson of Monaca, Pa., Mrs. Robert (Diane) Bennett of Harlingen, Texas, Mrs. Wayne

She was born Oct. 15, 1907, in Graysville, daughter of the late W. C. and Sarah (Myers) Drum. Mrs. Buttery was a retired home economics teacher in the Switzerland of Ohio School District. She was a member of Woodsfield Church of Christ, Ohio Education Association, OSU Alumni, Delta Kappa Gamma teachers sorority and VFW Post 5303 Auxiliary. She was past president of Monroe County BPW Association. She was a 1925 graduate of Woodsfield High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Buttery, in 1963; a son, Carl Buttery; and two brothers, Paul and Leland Drum. She leaves two daughters, Sue Miller of Woodsfield, and Ann McLean of Alpharetta, Ga.; two sisters, Jeanne Egger Schwall and Helen English, both of Woodsfield; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter.

He was born Feb. 13, 1920, in Rinard Mills, son of the late Russell Eli and Ada (McVey) Griffin. Mr. Griffin was a retired carpenter and farmer. He was a member of Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ near Graysville. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Olive Hill, Hattie Gardner, Ruby Turner and Wilma Freund.
He leaves his wife, Pearl Marie (Lynch) Griffin, whom he married Dec. 25, 1948; three sisters, Mrs. Lloyd (Ethel) Bach of Lewisville, Mrs. Don (Margaret) Ring of Louisville, and Mrs. Elvin (Audrey) Hall of Rinard Mills; two brothers, Cecil (Vashti) Griffin of Ravenna, and Heber (Twila) Griffin of Shreve; several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of Woodsfield United Methodist Church, where he formerly served as Sunday school superintendent, was a member of the Church choir and served on several committees for many years. Also, he was a former member of Woodsfield Village Council and the Board of Public Affairs, a former member of Knight of Pythian Lodge 338, Woodsfield, and an honorary member of Monroe County Trustees Association.
Mr. Wells was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Peoples Wells, on Aug. 22, 1989; two brothers, Harold Wells and Lawrence Wells.
He leaves two daughters, Charlotte (Don) Blair of St. Clairsville and Eileen (Carl) Farwell of Knoxville, Tenn.; three sisters, Ruth Sprout of Pleasant City, Florence Beebe of Derwent and Mabel Owens of California; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a special friend, Opal Starr of Woodsfield.

WOODSFIELD Claribel Fankhauser, 83, of Woodsfield, died Friday (March 9, 2001) at Wheeling (W. Va.) Hospital, Wheeling, W.Va.
She was born in Paden City, W.Va., on Dec. 25, 1917, daughter of the late Ida Barbara (Winkler) Paden and Earl Okey. Mrs. Fankhauser was a retired beautician and former owner/operator of the former Claribel s Beauty Shop in Woodsfield. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Woodsfield and a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 5303, Woodsfield.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kline Fankhauser; five sisters, Martha Virginia Paden in infancy; Flora Chapman, Betty Renner, Hazel Cox and Mary Katherine Renner; and four brothers, Clarence Paden, Ralph Paden, Russell Paden and Ross Paden.
She leaves two daughters, Jean Clift of Woodsfield and Penny Hannahs of Barnesville; six grandchildren and two sisters-in-law.

WOODSFIELD Betty L. Foster, 73, of Woodsfield, died Wednesday (March 14, 2001) at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 7, 1927, in Pine Grove, W.Va., daughter of the late Samuel and Olive (Barr) Cain. Mrs. Foster was a trustee of Praise Pentecostal Fellowship Church of Woodsfield. She was an employee of the former K. V.  Store of Woodsfield and an employee of the former Needle Nook, also of Woodsfield. She had worked as a clerk for the Green Thumb Program at the Woodsfield Municipal Building.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond F. Foster, who died in 1997; two brothers, Charles Cain and Warren Cain, and an infant brother.
She leaves a son, Charles F. Foster of Waynesburg, Pa.; two daughters, Susan Yocca of Woodsfield and Zella (Sarah) Foster of Brockville, Ontario, Canada; two brothers, Samuel Cain of Florida and Wayne Cain of Utah; a sister, Ellen Cain of  Vandalia; and two grandchildren.

He was born March 9, 1949, in Monroe County, son of Margaret (Craig) Henthorn of Woodsfield and the late Carl Henthorn. Mr. Henthorn was owner and operator of Henthorn Lanes of Woodsfield. He was a member of Eagles Lodge and a social member of Woodsfield VFW.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lonnie Henthorn, who died in 1990. She was born March 3, 1911, near Lewisville, daughter of the late Clyde Wesley and Rena Mae Denbow Morris.
She was a retired waitress and homemaker, and a Protestant by faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharlene Briggs; a son, Buddy Briggs; a brother, Clarence Morris; and an infant brother. Ms. Briggs leaves a daughter, Mrs. Bill (Linda) Kurtz of Newark; four sons, Roger L. (Betty) Briggs of Norfolk, Va., Larry W. (Gail Ann) Briggs of Graysville, Bob (Candy) Briggs of Summerfield, and Ronnie (Mae) Briggs of Oak Harbor; two stepdaughters, Drema Briggs of Ravenswood, W.Va., and Sheila Tackett of London, Ohio; a sister, Ann Lower of Castle Berry, Fla.; several
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
A very close friend, Jim Mitchell of Belmont County, also survives.

She was born Feb. 3, 1895, in Monroe County, daughter of the late Isadore and Emma (Curry) Shuman. Mrs. Landefeld was one of the founders of the Barnesville Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of Ladies of the Moose and Rebekah Lodge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert J. Landefeld; a brother, Roy Shuman; three sisters, Delta Shuman, Hilda Enoc and Dorothy Long; a granddaughter, Shelva Gibbons; a great-grandson, Todd Wehr.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving 25 years. He was a member of the Ohio American Legion, Woodsfield American Legion Post 87, the Forty and Eight Club of Korean Veterans and a member of the Woodsfield Presbyterian Church.
He leaves his wife, Sarah V. Dennis Horner of Holbrook; a daughter, Mrs. Angelo (Jean Ann) Sparacia of New York; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Molina of Cleveland and Helen Norton of Warren; and a brother, Edgar Horner of Tipp City.

She was born Oct. 6, 1910, in Monroe County, daughter of the late Clarence Edward and Clara Mary (Paulus) Starr. Miss Starr retired from Farmers Home Administration, Department of Agriculture.
She was a member of United Methodist Church of Woodsfield, O. E. S.  Chapter 268, Woodsfield, and the Pythian Sisters. She was a longtime volunteer for the American Red Cross.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Vernon Starr; a sister, Edith Dixon; and an infant sister, Helen Lenora Starr.
She leaves two brothers, Ralph E. Starr of Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Clarence A. (Tiny) Starr of Norton; a sister, Lucy E. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Denzil Beardmore and Leland Beardmore.

He was a member of Shady Lane Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Paulus was the owner and operator of the former Virginia s Dress Shop and co-owner of the former B.F. Paulus Hardware Store, both of Woodsfield. She had also been employed in the Monroe County Auditor s office in her early years. She was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Clarence; and one niece.
She leaves one sister, Martha Sciortino of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Betty Paulus of Woodsfield; two nephews, Frank Paulus of Woodsfield, and Ralph Paulus of Marietta; and one niece, Marilyn Paulus of Orlando, Fla.

WOODSFIELD Lester Wayne Scarbro, 45, of Summerfield, died Thursday (July 12, 2001) at his home. He was born March 21, 1956, son of Edith (Parsons) Scarbro Brooks of Woodsfield, and the late Leonard Ray Scarbro. Mr. Scarbro was a former construction worker and worked odd jobs in the area. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a Protestant by faith.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jeanie Carpenter and Loretta Scarbro.
He leaves two sons, Matthew Schafer and Timothy Scarbro, both of Marietta; three sisters, Connie Lindell of Lewisville, Thelma Sindelar of Barberton, and Margie Davis of Jerusalem; two brothers, Leonard Leroy Scarbro and Daiton Scarbro, both of Rinard Mills; several nieces and nephews.

He was born June 2, 1924, in Stafford, son of the late Earl and Elva (Stallings) Bishop. Mr. Bishop was a former foreman for Union Slag Co. in Marietta, and a 32-year employee of No. 1 and 2 Gravel Pit in Devola.He was also a former coal truck driver, a farmer and former owner/operator of Hi-Lo Wine Cellar in Marietta. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a lifetime member American Legion Post 64, Marietta.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Bishop. He leaves his wife, Violet E. (Gray) Bishop, whom he married April 25, 1958; a son, William L. Belleville and friend Carol Seese of Marietta; two daughters, Nancy Kaye Martin of Mesa, Ariz., and Geneva Forshey and friend Wayne Johnson of Lewisville; two sons by a previous marriage; two sisters, Mrs. Tom (Mary) Truelson of Newark and Shirley Sills of Columbus; two brothers, Don (Velma Lee) Bishop of Cambridge and Jim (Blanch) Bishop of Zanesville; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

    Mr. Brown was a retired businessman and a former school teacher. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War.

Mrs. Stephen was a homemaker and a member of Stop Nine Church of Christ, Byesville, and Golden Sixties.
She enjoyed writing poetry, gardening and raising flowers.

She was born Jan. 1, 1908, in Woodsfield, daughter of the late John Franklin and Sarah Rubel King. Mrs. McLeish had worked at Barnesville Hospital, where she served as a dietitian. She was a member of Woodsfield Church of Christ and Alkire Road Church of Christ in Grove City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. McLeish, who died in 1962; a brother, Vernon King; an infant brother, Marvin King; two sisters, Mary King and Ila Day.

WOODSFIELD Lawrence E. Stauffer, 83, of Clarington, died Wednesday (Sept. 5, 2001) at Barnesville Hospital.
He was born Feb. 5, 1918, in Monroe County, son of the late Fredrick and Amelia Longacher Stauffer. He was a retired farmer, a cheese maker who followed the Swiss tradition of cheese-making, and enjoyed his friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Stauffer, and four sisters, Laura Pfalzgraf, Ida Eisenbarth, Betty Stauffer, Annabel Stauffer.
He leaves two sisters, Alma Darrah of Lewisville, Texas, and Helen Frick of Lebanon; 12 nieces and nephews and several grand-nieces and -nephews.

WOODSFIELD Ruth A. Roth, 72, of Woodsfield, died Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2001) at The Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus. She was born June 29, 1929, in Woodsfield, daughter of the late Herman and Sylvia (Mowder) Zerger, Sr. Mrs. Roth was a 1947 graduate of Woodsfield High School and also a graduate of Muskingum College, New Concord.
She was a former caseworker for the Ohio Society of Crippled Children in Columbus. She retired from Monroe County Board of Elections, where she served as a former vice-chairman of the Monroe County Democratic Executive Committee.
She was a member of Woodsfield United Methodist Church and VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post 5303, both of Woodsfield.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Williams.
She leaves her husband, Ralph E. Roth, whom she married June 29, 1952; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Dee) Vargo of Marysville; a brother, Herman Zerger, Jr. of Woodsfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Reischman was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lewisville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Lawrence Reischman; two brothers, Guy and Clyde Kuhn; and a sister, Katherine Darby.

WOODSFIELD John F. Dye, 73, of New Matamoras, died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) at the Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville, W.Va. He was born July 15, 1928, in Monroe County, son of the late Clarence Oliver and Blayne (Athey) Dye. Mr. Dye retired from the former Conalco Corp. of Hannibal. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of Harmony Hill Baptist Church, Brownsville. He was a life member of VFW Post 5303, Woodsfield, and the Ohio Valley Korean War Association.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Alice (Whitt) Dye, who died in 1990; and a brother, Merlin Dye.

Mr. Carpenter retired from Davey Tree Expert Co. in Kent, where he served as an area manager. He was a member of Lewisville United Methodist Church, Lewisville, American Legion Post 496 and a life member of Disabled American Veterans. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran, having served during World War II.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence Carpenter and Paul Carpenter; and a sister, Grace Van Meter.

WOODSFIELD Fern A. Bode, 93, of 641 S. Kaderly St., Strasburg, formerly of Sycamore Valley, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) in Hennis Care Center, Dover. She was born in Monroe County on Feb. 6, 1908, daughter of the late James H. and Clara Mendenhall Craig. She was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught for 40 years in
various schools in Monroe County. She retired from the former Bethel elementary School at Marr. She was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church in Monroe County, where she was a member of Ladies Aide. She attended Strasburg United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar C. Bode, on June 1, 1979. Also deceased are two brothers, Denzil Craig and Clifford Craig, and three sisters, Bessie Highman, Elsie Foraker and Goldie Curtis.

She leaves a son, C. Edwin Bode, and his wife, Sheila, of Strasburg; four grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; four sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews.

WOODSFIELD Martha L. Steen, 77, of Cleveland, formerly of Woodsfield, died Wednesday (Nov. 7, 2001) at Barnesville Hospital. She was born June 19, 1924, in Cameron, daughter of the late Julius and Lorena (Ady) McConnell.
Mrs. Steen was a homemaker and a member of Broadview Church of Christ of Cleveland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel Steen; a son, Richard Steen; a great-grandson, Steven Pyles; a brother, Arthur McConnell; and a sister, Alda Workman.
She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Guy (Brenda) Stewart of Woodsfield; two brothers, Fred McConnell of Woodsfield and William McConnell of Columbus; a sister, Lucille Smith of Alliance; three granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

WOODSFIELD Gertrude G. (Steen) Hooper, 92, of Mechanicsburg Community, Antioch, died Monday (Nov. 12, 2001) in Wellsville. She was born June 4, 1909, in Woodsfield, daughter of the late Charles and Hattie (Smith) Steen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orvill Hooper; her step-mother, Mary Conger Steen; a son, James E. Hooper; a daughter, Lucille Piatt; three brothers, Thurman, Oscar and Hershel Steen; and two sisters, Opal Winland and Annie Kinney.
She leaves a son, Charles W. Hooper of Sardis; three daughters, Mrs. Paul (Helen) Scivinsky of Rayland, Mrs. Edward (Betty) Nicholson of Wellsburg, W.Va., and Mrs. Lawrence (Pauline) Cline of Wellsville; a sister, Wilma Tallman of Alliance; 22 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

WOODSFIELD Warren E. Eckelberry, 81, of Graysville, died Monday (Nov. 29, 2001) at Marietta l Hospital.
He was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Cleveland, Okla., son of the late Martin V. and Jennie (Cline) Eckelberry. Mr. Eckelberry was employed as a long-distance truck driver. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, having served during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 5303.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie (Hamilton) Eckelberry, in April 2001.
He leaves two sons, Martin A. (Thu) Eckelberry and Warren E. Bud (Tina) Eckelberry, Jr., both of Graysville; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mrs. Fisher was a member of the Elks Club Women s Auxiliary in Washington Court House.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Max Haines.

Mrs. Hawks was a member of the Church of Christ of Later Day Saints.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse W. Hawks, who died March 5, 1976.
She leaves a daughter, Mrs. William (Willa) Carter of Woodsfield; three grandchildren, Linda Zern of Holly Springs, N.C., William Carter II of Germany and Ilaina Carter of Woodsfield; and six great-grandchildren.

She was born May 16, 1928, daughter of the late Lawrence Gallaher and Lucy Huth Gallaher. She was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Woodsfield and the Purgatorial Society. She served as past president of the St. John and Baptist
Catholic Women s Club and past president of the St. John the Baptist Immaculate Conception Mission Catholic Women s Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence G. (Dutch) Howell in January 2001; a daughter, Ruth Ellen Howell; two brothers, Lawrence and James Gallaher; and a foster brother, Everett Brown.

Ulrich at home; four brothers, Ralph Ault and his wife, Naomi, Clyde Ault and his wife, Martha Lee, Hilbert Ault and his wife, Eleanor, and Chester Ault and his wife, Donna, all of Woodsfield; one sister, Sylvia Jones and her husband, Ralph, of Woodsfield; six grandchildren, Mary Ann Campbell, April Crum, Savannah King, Gerald Ridgeway, Rachel Ridgeway and Elizabeth Keeton; five great-grandchildren, David King, Daniel Campbell, Ashley Campbell, Michael Crum and Walker Crum; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born May 17, 1917, near Calais to Frank and Rosa Crawford Betts. She was a homemaker and was a Protestant by faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ermie Morris, on March 12, 1994; her parents; six brothers, Elbert, Clarence, George, Vearl, Woodrow and John Betts; one sister, Sara Betts; one daughter-in-law, Myra Morris; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray Singleton, who died April 8, 1997; one brother, Elmer Schumacher; and a grandson, Christopher Reed.

He was born at the family farm near Woodsfield on July 20, 1916, son of the late Charles F. and Georgia (Neuhart) Bott. Mr. Bott was a retired heavy-equipment operator for the Ohio Valley Sand and Gravel Co. and a retired farmer. He was a former Center Township trustee in Monroe County; a member of Woodsfield United Methodist Church; a World War II U.S. Army veteran; member of VFW Post 5303, Woodsfield; a member of the American Legion
Post 87, Woodsfield; member of the 40 & 8 Voiture Local 363, Woodsfield; member of the Knights of Pythian Lodge 338, Woodsfield; and a member of the Monroe County Farm Bureau.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Corene (Gehrig) Bott, on Dec. 14, 1979, and a son, Daniel Bott.

He was born March 23, 1911, in Monroe County to Samuel and Maggie Goodballett Christman. He was a retired farmer and a member of Seneca Valley Church of Christ.
He is survived by one son, Lamont Christman of Columbus; two brothers, Vernon Christman of Ashland and Frank Christman of Woodsfield; one sister, Edna Long of Batesville; two grandsons, Lyndon Christman and his wife, Marianne, of
Galion, Ohio, and Eric Christman and his wife, Brenda, of Dublin; and eight grandchildren, Kyle, Natalee, Grant, Bethany, Clint, Andrea, Sarah and Ira.

Francis O. "Jack" Matson Sr. (Oct. 26, 1918---July 12, 2001)

A funeral service for Francis O. "Jack" Matson Sr., 82, of Newark, will be held at 1p.m. Monday at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Wilson cemetery.

Mr. Matson, who retired from Rockwell international, where he worked as a welder, died July 12, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville. He was born Oct. 26, 1918, in McConnelsville, to the late Clarence and Ura Ellen (Goldsberry) Matson.

Mr. Matson was a member of Masonic lodge of Tipp City, Ohio Country and Western Music Association, and Country Music Fellowship Organization. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Lorene (Williams) Matson; daughters, Janot Arlene Fitch of Louisa, KY; Lois Jean Derr of Bradford, and Sandra Jo Wright of Newark; sons and daughter-in-law, Francis O. and Betty Matson Jr . of Buckeye Lake, and David C. and Mary Matson of Corpus Christi, Texas; step-children, Donnie Thurman of Clay City, KY, and Wilma Grimm of Mesa Ariz.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son Dale Matson; D Matson; and sister Mary Esselstine.

Robert "Bob" John Schoeppner, 46, of 309 Muskingum Drive, Marietta, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 1, 2001) at Marietta Memorial Hospital as the result of a hunting accident in Noble County. He was born Aug. 27, 1955, in Marietta to John J. and Ethel Schott Schoeppner. He was employed as an engineer team leader No. 1 at American Electric Power, Muskingum River Plant, where he worked for 22 years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, was an avid NASCAR and Bill Elliott fan, and was a Bantam League baseball coach for 10 years. He grew up in the Catholic faith and joined Christ United Methodist Church in 1982. He was a member of Sons of American Legion Post 64.

He is survived by his wife, Twila Schoeppner, whom he married Oct. 3, 1981, in Marietta; one daughter, Jaime Raffinengo and her husband, Leo, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sons, Erik John Schoeppner and Robbie Ryan Schoeppner, both of Marietta; his parents; one grandson, Christian Raffinengo of St. Petersburg; four sisters, Sandy Walker and her husband, Dave, of Gallipolis, Linda Marshall and her husband, Chuck, of Marietta, Mary Kunz and her husband, Thomas, of Marietta and Barbara Binegar and her husband, Tom, of Marietta; one goddaughter, Jodi Marshall Boyd and her husband, Chris, of Columbus; one godson, Kevin

He was a member of the Canton Baptist Temple, IBEW Local 540, Canton, the National Electrical Contractors Association, the North Canton Eagles. A. U.S. Navy veteran who served in the European Theater, he was a charter member of the Jackson Twp. Fire Department. CALDWELL - Estelene W. Danford, 89, of Caldwell, died Saturday (Sept. 15, 2001) at Summitt Acres Nursing Home.

She was born March 23, 1912, in Noble County, daughter of Kennen and Alma (Montgomery) Harding. Mrs. Danford was retired from the Noble County Journal Leader, a member of Caldwell United Methodist Church and a member of Rebekah Lodge in Caldwell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Danford, who passed away January 1966; two brothers, Tom and Warren Harding and one sister, Helen Showalter.

She leaves one son, Leonard (Maxine) Danford of Caldwell; a daughter, Genelda Young of Caldwell; three sisters, Hazel McVicker of Canton, Wanda Roe of Crestline, Romaine Forbes of Senecaville; two brothers, Victor Harding of Salesville and Phillip Harding of Fulda; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great- grandson and several nieces and nephews.

WOODSFIELD Harold R. Kilburn, 74, of Lewisville, died Thursday (Nov. 22, 2001) at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 17, 1927, in Cambridge, son of the late Freeman and Grace (Todd) Kilburn.
Mr. Kilburn owned and operated Lewisville Hardware for 17 years and retired to fish and farm in 1984.
He attended Lewisville High School and was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1945 to 1947 in World War II. He received the Army Occupation Medal for serving in Japan, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.
He leaves his wife, Judy (Ball) Kilburn of Lewisville, whom he married March 26, 1954; a daughter, Mrs. Denson (Sherry Lynn) Wright of Ellenton, Fla.; a son, Bryan (Christine) Kilburn of Lewisville; three brothers, Ralph (Birdie) Kilburn of Arizona, Donald (Judy) Kilburn and Dale (Dorothy) Kilburn, both of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Mrs. Keith (Kristy Wright) Gilbert of Springfield, Ga., and Kara and Chad Kilburn of Lewisville; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard Floyd Walters, Sr., 74, of Cambridge, died Saturday (Dec. 22, 2001) at The Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus.
He was born Jan. 14, 1927, in Sycamore Valley, Monroe County, son of the late Floyd and Odessa (Moberly) Walters.
Mr. Walters retired from NCR. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II and the Korean War.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 66, Scottish Rite of Cambridge, York Rite, Alladin Temple Shrine, Kambri Shrine and First United Methodist Church.
He was 50-year member of American Legion Post 84 and a lifetime member of the VFW.
He was a volunteer at Meadowbrook High School and served as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 546 of Byesville.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Elmer Walters; his first wife, Marjorie Todd Walters; and his second wife, Hazel Walters.
He leaves his wife, Delores Heldman Walters of Cambridge, whom he married July 7, 1996; a daughter, Mrs. Mike (Carolyn) Stewart of Lancaster; a son, Rick (Kathy) Walters II of Cambridge; grandchildren, Elissa and Bradley Walters and Kimberly Stewart; four stepchildren, Mrs. Bill (Lynnda) Gress, Randy (Kari) Heldman, George Heldman, Richard (Susan) Heldman; several step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Foraker of Quaker City and Ruby Stallings of Marietta; and several nieces and nephews.

WOODSFIELD Rita M. Singleton, 67, of Woodsfield, died Saturday (Dec. 22, 2001) at the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born June 1, 1934, in Woodsfield, daughter of the late Herbert and Stella (Bing) Schumacher.
Mrs. Singleton retired from the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield, where she served as a certified nursing assistant.
She was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, where she was also a member of the Purgatorial Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Singleton, who died April 8, 1997; a brother, Elmer Schumacher; and a grandson, Christopher Reed.
She leaves two daughters, Kathy Singleton of Woodsfield and Mrs. Larry (Cindy) Stephen of Boston; two sons, Patrick (Sharon) Singleton and Matthew (Sherri) Singleton, both of Woodsfield; a brother, Roger Schumacher of Woodsfield; nine grandchildren, Madeline Singleton, Adam Reed, Kyle Singleton, Tim Woodell, Jeff Woodell, John Schumacher, Tiffany Stephen, Katelyn Stephen and Lance Schumacher; and several nieces and nephews.

William L. Morris, 79 East Canton, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at Manor Care, Belden Village, following an extended illness. He was born in Shadyside and has resided in the Canton area most of his life.
He worked as a powerhouse engineer for Pioneer Foods for 28 years and then was employed by Ford Motor Company in Indianapolis, Ind for 11 years, retiring in 1988. He served with the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War ll and was an active member of the Canton Baptist Temple and Ambassador Sunday School Class. Mr. Morris was also a member of the Stark County Gem and Mineral Club, Sugarcreek Valley Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Ohio, National Rifle Association, and U.S. Veterans, Canton Hall of Fame Chapter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sanford and Kathleen Morris; brothers, James and Robert Morris.
He is survived  by his wife Wilma M. Morris to whom he was married for 57 years; his sons and daughters in law, Larry L. and Nancy Morris and Gregory R. and Jeanette Morris both of East Canton; daughter and son in law, Janet C. and Gerald Newell of Louisville; grandsons, Aaron P. Morris, Brandon W. Morris, David L. Newell and Robert D. Newell; sisters, Martha Skaggs of Logan, Betty Sturgill of St. Clairsville and Janalene Kindelberger of Navarre; sister in law, Patricia Morris of Canton and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 8 p.m. in the Reed Funeral Home, Canton, with Dr. Harold Henniger officiating. Graveside services will be Friday at 11.a.m. at Powhatan Cemetery, Powhatan Point. Calling hours are tonight from 6.p.m. until time of services.

George L. Speakman, age 82, of Paris, OH, passed away Saturday July 28, 2001, in his home following an extended illness. He was born June 26, 1919 in Paris to the late Aaron and Edna (Crowl) Speakman. George was a retired carpenter, a member of the Israel Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Men of Missions, Lutheran Bowling League, and a past president of the Paris Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eva (Mercer); two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Gilbert Ray of Loganville, GA, Kay and Bernard Morrison, Jr. of Minerva; six sisters, Ruth Buchanan of Minerva, Jeanette Knam of Maximo, Mary Welker, Martha Davis and Ann Miller, all of Waynesburg, Betty Speakman of Paris; two brothers, James Speakman of Minerva, and Harold Speakman of Paris; three grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Garry L. Merrin, age 58, formerly from the Canton - Amsterdam, OH area, residing in Benton, AK., passed away Saturday, July 21, 2001, in the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, AK. Garry had been a patient there the past seven months. He was born April 19, 1943, to Albert Merrin and Clarice (Dallison) Merrin. Garry was a 1961 graduate of Canton Lincoln High School. He was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Canton, OH. Garry was a decorated Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Preceding him in death was his father, Albert Merrin of Canton in 1992; ex-wife, Nancy of Arkansas in 2000. Surviving are his mother, Clarice (Dallison) Merrin of Canton; daughter, Beverly (Fritz) Haberham; and granddaughter, Echo of Wisconsin; brothers,

SUMMERFIELD----Homer Rex Leach, 72, of Quaker City, died Monday (Feb. 12, 2001) at Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell.

He was born Jan. 17, 1929, near Quaker City, son of the late Arch and Hazel (Powell) Leach.

Mr. Leach retired from W.J. Plumby Inc., Somerton, where he served as a mechanic. He was a Protestant by faith and was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley (Wise) Leach, who died April 4, 1998; a brother Gervis Leach; an infant daughter; and a grandson, Donnie Howiler.

He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Gary (Penny) Reed of Caldwell, Mrs. Rich (Betty Ann) Howiler of Temperanceville and Mrs. Bill (Patty) Masciarelli of Summerfield; two sons, Mike Leach of Old Washington and Jeff Leach of Temperanceville; two sisters, Barbara Floyd of Zanesville and Mrs. Jerry (Florence Carol) Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a brother Arch Neal (Ruth) Leach of Quaker City; an aunt, Beulah Goodin of Cambridge; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was born June 23, 1912, in Summerfield, daughter of the late Clifford and Julia Ann (Wise) Carpenter.

Mrs. Foraker was a former employee of Barnesville Manufacturing, where she served as an inspector.

She was a member of Central Christian Church, Quaker City, and a former member of Quaker City Rebekah Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William B. Leach, in 1943; her second husband, Elmo C. Yaw, in 1976; her third husband, Vernon E. Foraker, in 1997; a son, William A. Leach; and a daughter, Leona "Jackie" Yansoik.

She leaves two sons, Robert B. (Lequiat) Leach of Dell City, Okla., and James E. (Rachel) Leach of Cambridge; a daughter, Leola "Dick" Giesy of Quaker City; a step-son, Robert Yaw of Leon, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Lloyd Harold Weber, 84, 904 Park Ave., New Matamoras, died March 20, 2001, at home, in Washington County. He was born Dec. 20, 1916 in Lewisville, a son of the late John H. Weber and Jennie Wheeler Weber.

He was a member of Harmony Hill Baptist Church, was a rigger for Babcox-Wilcox Boiler Factory, Barberton, where he worked 33 years; was a member of Matamoras Senior Citizens and All Faith Choir.

Surviving are his wife, Opal Cline Weber, New Matamoras, whom he married Sept.___, 1948; two sons, Harold Dean Weber and his wife, Sally, Doylestown, Gary Richard Weber and his wife Roberta, Norton; a daughter Mrs. Steven (Diana Kay) Starr, Doylestown; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Roy Weber, Phoenix, AZ; Dennis Weber, Lewisville, Francis Weber, Vienna, WV; five sisters, Melba Tuel, Talmadge, Delores Strickling, Washington Court House, Vera Van Metre, Kent, Eleanor Forcas, Canton, Eileen Cline, Lewisville.

LEACH Robert Bryan, 64, of Del City, passed away Nov. 5, 2001. He was born July 26, 1937, to Mr & Mrs. William Leach, in Guernsey County, Ohio. He came to Oklahoma in the early 1960's at Tinker A.F.B., also having lived in Tennessee, Arkansas, & England. Robert was a member of the American Legion Post 170, V.F.W., Elks Club, & enjoyed horse racing, football, baseball, & fishing. Bob had a great love for American Legion baseball & had worked with Post 170 in MWC for over 20 years. He was so proud of their trip to the World Series this year in Washington. Though his health was failing, he would travel out to watch them play. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy LaQuieta Leach of Del City; sons, John Daniel Leach of Piedmont & Robert Henry Witt of Okla. City; daughters, Robin Sue Leach of Midwest City & Tammy Jowers of Guthrie; grandchildren, Heather, Teri Jo, Chris, Corey, Robbie, Brittany, Rory, & Nate, all of the metro area; & great granddaughter Jarica; brother, Jim Leach & sister, Leola Giesey, both of Guernsey County, Ohio. Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, Janet Bell Henthorn; three daughters, Mrs. David (Heather) Saffell, Woodsfield, Mrs. Barry (Stacey) West, Jerusalem; Trish Henthorn of the home; three brothers, Wayne Henthorn and Vernon Henthorn, both of Woodsfield; Jim Henthorn, Lewisville; two sisters, Florence (Jean) Dawson, New Martinsville and Sherry Wilson, Miltonsburg; two grandsons, Justin and Chase Saffell.

She was born August 2, 1904, in Proctor, W.Va., a daughter of the late George and Florence Hall Bowery.  She was a member of the Sardis United Methodist Church, where she was a life member of The Women's Society and former president of The Community Club of Sardis. She was an avid crocheter and seamstress.

Surviving are three daughters; Mrs. George (Nancy) Rohrer, Hermosa Beach, Ca.; Mrs. William (Dorothy) Schweizer, Wheeling; Mrs. John (Mary) Adams, Canton; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Morris; a son, Charles Morris; two sisters, Grace Taylor and Ruth Romick, and a brother, George Bowery.

     Trinity Grace Henthorn, infant daughter of Earl and Beth Bland Henthorn, Hannibal, was stillborn Nov 16, 2001, at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta.
     In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Danielle Scarlet; her maternal grandmother, Sharon Bland, Paden City, WV; paternal grandparents, Earl and Arlene Henthorn, Hannibal; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
     She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Wm."Doug" Bland.
     Private graveside services and interment will be held at the family's convenience at Paden Memorial Gardens, Paden City.

Caroline Emma Carroll, born Nov. 3, 1920, went home to be with her Lord on Sept. 5, 2001. Caroline lived her life with quiet dignity and dedicated herself to the happiness and well-being of her family. She was a member of the Akron Baptist Temple for over 50 years.

Caroline is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Clarence; children, Judy (Bob) Smith and David (Beth) Carroll; grandchildren, Becky (Joe) Nicholas, Matt Smith, Karen and Jeff Carroll; great-grandchildren, Abby and Andrew Nicholas; and sister, Dorothy Quier.

Our love for Caroline and the memory of how she lived her life will live with us forever.

    She was born August 24, 1912, in Cleveland, daughter of the late Edward W. and Anna Richards (Butler) Tanner.
   Mrs. Allen was a former employee of Aultman Hospital, Canton, where she served in the housekeeping department.
   She was a Catholic by faith.
   She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Miller; her second husband, William Allen; three sisters; and a brother.
   She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Patricia) Shaw of Woodsfield, and Mrs. Les (Mary Louise) Heinrich of Canton; a step-daughter, Mrs. Harold (Patricia) Heaps of Perryville, Mo.; nine grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.

           Mrs. Binegar was a member of Unity Baptist Church, and a charter member of Antioch Fire Department, where she belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary.
           She was a member of Midway Senior Citizens Group.

Carpenter, whom she married Oct. 6, 1951; a daughter, Mrs. Albert (Sharon) Leasure of Sardis; two sons, Bruce G. (Brenda) Carpenter of Barnesville, and Gregory P. Carpenter of Winchester, Va.; a brother, Jame A. (Carol) Baker of Antioch; a half-brother, William H.           WOODSFIELD -- Sebastian J. "Tony" Castelli, 80, of 417 Eastern Ave., died at 8:25 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2001  at his home.
          He was born November  12, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Cerino and Rosaria Terranova Castelli. He was a former self-employed entrepreneur in various ventures, a former distributor for Xypex Waterproofing Compound in Arizona and Ohio and was a retired insurance agent. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church at Woodsfield and Knights of Columbus at Barnesville. Upon his retirement, he was a therapeutic foster parent and an avid gardener.
          He is survived by his wife, Dorothy "Dottie" Hambrick Castelli, whom he married Oct. 10, 1990; three sons, Sebastian Joseph Castelli Jr. at home, Anthony Castelli of Pine, Colo., and Richard Castelli of Cary, S.C.; two daughters, Charlotte Del Fiacco of Illinois and Patricia Georgiev of Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; one stepdaughter, Christine Sanborn of Jerusalem; one
stepson, Benjamin Sanborn of Lakewood; three sisters, Rose Gollen of Renton, Wash., Lucy White of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ann Rogers of Lakewood; two brothers, Albert Castelli and Frank Castelli, both of Middleburg Heights; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
          He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Roland Castelli and James Castelli.

          LORAIN -- Zelda Cline, 89, of Lorain died Sunday, August 19, 2001 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a lengthy illness.
          She was born October 11, 1911, in Monroe County to Evan and Gracie Durbin. She moved to Lorain from Monroe County in 1941, and to Vermilion in 1946.
          She was a member of Brownhelm Congregational Church in Brownhelm. She worked during World War II at Thew-Shovel in Lorain and South Shore Packing Co. in Vermilion. Her hobbies included gardening, canning and cooking.
          She is survived by two daughters, Kathern Beursken and Marjorie Gassnig, both of Vermilion; three sons, Lewis Melvin Cline of Chula Vista, Calif., Cecil Charles Cline of Williams, Ore., and Clayton Eldred Cline of Vermilion; 16 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
         She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence F. Cline, on Feb. 15, 1996; three sisters, Mary Scott, Flossie Scott and Mabel Widener; and four brothers, Charlie, Arland, Orlando "Jake," and James Durbin.
         Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South St., Vermilion, with the Rev. Stephanie Bikel, pastor of Brownhelm Congregational United Church of Christ, officiating.    She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Ewers; one son, Elvin Ewers; her parents; and two brothers, Carl and Gilbert Hall.

      She was born in Fly, (MONROE CO.)Ohio, and moved to Columbus, (FRANKLIN CO.) Ohio, in 1941 and to Salem in 1994. She retired as office manager from Columbus Public Schools in 1984. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, South Salem Senior Citizens and Skyline Baptist Church. She enjoyed writing. She married Clarence in 1946; he is deceased.
      Survivors include her daughter, Colette Tennant of Salem; and three grandchildren.
      Visiting will be 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Virgil T. Golden Chapel.

    WOODSFIELD - Raymond Eugene "Gene" Harmon, 73, of Rinard Mills (Marr community) died Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
    He was born January 29, 1928, in Graysville, son of the late Harry and Wilna (Cline) Harmon.
    Mr. Harmon was a retired school bus driver for Switzerland of Ohio School District in Monroe County, having served for 25 years.
    He was also a former maintenance worker for Wayne National Forest, and was a former Bethel Township trustee for 16 years.
    He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a Protestant by faith.
    He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Scarbro; a sister, Shirley Flauhaus; a brother, Leonard Harmon; and a grandson, Edward John Britton.
   He leaves his wife, Pauline (McCune) Harmon, whom he married July 9, 1952; four daughters, Mrs. Daiton (Susan) Scarbro and Mrs. Leroy (Glenda) Scarbro, both of Rinard Mills, Mrs. Paul (Betty) Britton of Marietta and Mrs. Brian (Kathy) Graham of Dart; a brother, Larry (Hope) Harmon of Washington, W.Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Norbert (Ada) Schumacher of Woodsfield, Mrs. Dewey (Ann) Queen of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Mrs. Vernon (Patty) Alberry of Newark; a sister-in-law, Ethel Harmon of Marietta; 10 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; nine step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

      Hohman, Thelma C., age 76, of Canton, died Friday morning in the Hanover House after an extended illness. Born in Lewisville, Ohio, she had been a Canton resident since 1947. She retired in 1985 from the J.C. Penney Co. after 19 years of service. She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, St. Joan of Arc Altar Rosary Society, St. Joan of Arc Sewing Club and the A.A.R.P. Survived by her husband, Charles W. Hohman; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carol and David Phillips of Canton, Arlene Watters of Coroapolis, PA and Joyce and Gary Isler of North Canton; a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Polly Hohman of Copley, OH; seven grandchildren, Mark Wootton, Lori Laghaeian, Jenny Shaver, Jason Watters, Jessica Hohman, and Chad and Kari Isler; two great-grandchildren, Aidan Laghaeian and Ashley Wootton; and four brothers, Joe Yontz of North Canton, Ray Yontz of Jerusalem, OH, Dale Yontz of Woodsfield, OH and Ronald Yontz of Canton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry A. Morris, in 1994; two brothers, Donald McCaslin and Dean McCaslin; a sister, Arlene Hopkins; two infant brothers; an infant sister.

She leaves two daughters, Tammy (Jim) O'Brien of Woodsfield and Cheryl Morris of Chillicothe; two sisters, Rosalee Ward of Byesville and Kathleen Ward of Woodsfield; a granddaughter, Brieann Beidenbach; several nieces and nephews.

    WOODSFIELD -- John A. Mowery, 58, of 47467 Ohio 26, Woodsfield, died at 6:25 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2001 at the Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, W.Va.
    He was born June 23, 1943, in Pomeroy to Willard and Agnes Wilson Mowery. He was a coal miner with Ohio Valley Coal Co., No. 6 Mine, at Alledonia. He was a Protestant by faith.
    He is survived by his wife, Linda Moore Mowery, whom he married April 8, 1970; three sons, Timothy Mowery and his wife, Marie, of Columbus, Troy Mowery of Woodsfield and Corey Mowery of Columbus; three brothers, Jack and Kenny Mowery, both of Pomeroy, and James Mowery of Columbus; five grandchildren, Justin Mowery, Jocelyn Mowery, Layken Mowery, Joey Mowery and Johnny Mowery; and several nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Junior Mowery; and two sisters, Judy VanConney and Joann Weirs.
   Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family. There is no visitation. Watters Funeral Home in Woodsfield is in charge of arrangements.

           WOODSFIELD - Lester L. Piatt, 70, of Whipple R.D. 1, died Friday, August 3, 2001 in Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta.
           He was born March 4, 1931, near Graysville, son of the late Thurman and Phena Jane (Nalley) Piatt.
          Mr. Piatt was a retired employee of the Airolite Co., Marietta, and a farmer. He attended Whipple Baptist Church; was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War; a member of the Aurelius Lodge 0308 F. & A.M., Macksburg; and a member of the Cattlemen's Association in Washington County.
          In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Todd Piatt; five brothers, Harry Piatt, Heber Piatt, Ray Piatt, Charles Piatt and Carl Piatt.
         He leaves his wife, Anna Lee (Carpenter) Piatt, whom he married Oct. 27, 1952; two sons, Jerald (Vikki) Piatt of Whipple; Gale (Pam) Piatt of Bridgeport, W.Va.; two sisters, Mabel Dillon and Ruth (Junior) Lisk, both of Marietta; two brothers, Forrest "Ben" (Maxine) Piatt and Emil (Anna) Piatt, both of Marietta; two sister-in-laws, Dora Piatt and Imogene Piatt, both of Graysville; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; mother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born Feburary 9, 1901, in Graysville to Allen and Anna Christy King. She was a homemaker and a member of Graysville United Methodist Church and the Women's Society of the church for many years.
           She is survived by one daughter, Vera Ullman and her husband, Ralph, of Graysville; two grandchildren, Larry Ullman and his wife, Donna, of Graysville and Karen Marks and her husband, Bob, of Cambridge; three great-grandchildren, Keith Ullman and his wife, Tina, of Graysville, Tammy Howell and her husband, Kevin, of Rinard Mills and Kimberly Marks of Cambridge; and five great-great-grandchildren, Michael and Jonathan Ullman and Latasha, Tyler and Cole Howell.
          She was preceded in death by her husband of 80 years, Glenn Piatt, on April 13, 2000; one sister, Carrie Moore; and two brothers, Harold and Lloyd King.

    She was born August 31, 1903, in Monroe County to Thomas and Laura Stine Winland. She was a member of West Union Church of Christ.
   She is survived by two sons, Rolland Ruble of Woodsfield and Delbert Ruble of Sardis; one sister, Verda Beckett of Vero Beach, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Ruble, in 1980; one
son, Harold Ruble; one daughter, Pearl Hodgkiss; two brothers, Alva and Vernon Winland; and two sisters, Stella Stillion and Mary Lash.
   Services are at 1 p.m. Friday at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, 100 S. Paul St., Woodsfield. Burial is in West Union Cemetery near Sardis. Friends will be received from 10 a.m. Friday until the hour of the service at the funeral home.

    Mrs. Singleton retired from the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield, where she served as a certified nursing assistant.
    She was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, where she was also a member of the Purgatorial Society.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Singleton, who died April 8, 1997; a brother, Elmer Schumacher; and a grandson, Christopher Reed.
    She leaves two daughters, Kathy Singleton of Woodsfield and Mrs. Larry (Cindy) Stephen of Boston; two sons, Patrick (Sharon) Singleton and Matthew (Sherri) Singleton, both of Woodsfield; a brother, Roger Schumacher of Woodsfield; nine grandchildren, Madeline Singleton, Adam Reed, Kyle Singleton, Tim Woodell, Jeff Woodell, John Schumacher, Tiffany Stephen, Katelyn Stephen and Lance Schumacher; and several nieces and nephews.

   He was born October 9, 1949, in Crown Hill, W.Va., to Paul E. Sparkman Sr. and Mary Mitchell Sparkman. He graduated from Scio High School in Scio, Ohio, in 1968. A disabled American veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He was a Protestant by faith.
   He is survived by his mother of Summerfield; three brothers, Paul E. Sparkman Jr. and his wife, Pam, of Woodsfield, Wayne Sparkman of Maineville and Timothy Sparkman and his wife, Mary, of Summerfield; two sisters, Jane Hines of Maineville and Cheryl Dalton and her husband, Victor, of Beallsville; and several nieces and nephews.
  He was preceded in death by his father.

      He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War.

      She is survived by three daughters, Thelma Lechiara and her husband, Dominic, of Ashland and Mrs. Dunham (Ruth) Hollister and Mrs. Albert (Geneva) Zoller, all of Marietta; one son, Paul Williams and his wife, Katherine, of Findlay; two sisters, Dorothy Decker of Parkersburg and Juanita Clift of Sycamore Valley; one brother, Cecil Winland of New Martinsville, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Williams; two sisters, Grethel Devore and Doris Wittenbrook; and three brothers, Clesson, Clarence and Vernon Winland.

    He is survived by his mother of Lewisville; his father of Centerville; his stepfather, Fred Sirianni Jr. of Lewisville; his stepmother, Kathy Yocum of Centerville; two sisters, Hollie Tisher of Lewisville and Erica Sirianni of Lewisville; two brothers, John Yocum of Barnesville and Rocky Sirianni of Lewisville; two stepbrothers; two stepsisters; his maternal grandmother,
Katherine Hartley of Woodsfield; and his stepgrandparents, Fred Sr. and Ada Sirianni of Lewisville, and Martha Betts of New Martinsville, W.Va.
   He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Harry Hartley Sr.; and his paternal grandparents, Robert and Eulalia Yocum.     Yontz, Joseph W., age 78, died Saturday March 17, 2001 at home in North Canton following an extended illness. He was born in Lewisville, OH February. 9, 1923 to the late William and Nellie (Ritterbeck) Yontz. Joseph was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, VFW #7490, and AARP. He retired from Sugardale in 1986. Joseph was a veteran of WWII, proudly serving his country and represented three generations of US Navy including son-in-law, Petty Officer Second Class, Michael E. Masterson- deceased, and grandson, Petty Officer Second Class, Michael D. Masterson now stationed in California.
    Preceded in death by sisters, Bertha Michel, Thelma Hohman and Leona Michel.
    Joseph leaves behind his caring wife of 55 years, Violet Vi (Weisent) Yontz; daughters and sons-in-law, Sue Masterson of Pembroke Pines, FL., Kathy and John Ranalli of Troy, MI., Mary Lynn and Pat Kilkenny of North Canton; sons and daughter-in-law, Dennis Yontz of Fort Wayne, IN., David and Pat Yontz of Canton; 12 grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Rita Yontz of Jerusalem, OH., Dale and Sandra Yontz of Woodsfield, OH., Ronald Yontz of Canton. Marie G Morris Carr, 83, Owensboro, died Tuessday, Nov 27 2001 at Owensboro Nercy Health System.  The Owensboro native retired from General Electric Co and a member of Rosary Makers Club.  She was a member of Peoples Baptist Church for more than 50 years and taught Sunday school for 20 years.  She was a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church and enjoyed dancing and making quilts for her family.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Elmer Morris in 1982 and Clinton R. Carr in 1999.

Survivors include a son, Robert Elmer Morris of Frisco City, Ala.; a daughter, Anita Quiggins of Owensboro; three stepsons; three stepdaughters; 11 grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; nine step great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 2 pm Friday at James H. He was preceded in death by his parents, Friend and Mary Jane (McCormick) Staley; a son, James Staley in 1964; brothers Russell, Roy (Red), Ross, and Calvin Staley; sisters Myrtle Balwanz and Virginia Stackpole Berendzen. Altia Cecile Staley, 97, of New Martinsville, died May 1, 2001 at home. She was born Aug. 25, 1903 in Wetzel County, a daughter of the late James E. and Frances Boyers Yoho. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Porters Falls and Reader, W.Va.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Armenia "Mena" Yoho, and an adopted son, David L. Utt.

Survivors include her husband Cecil W. Staley, a son Bernard M. Erma L. Boles - nee Schell

ERMA L. BOLES, 94, of Olathe, Kansas, formerly of Seneca and Topeka, died Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at Centers for Long-term Care at Olathe, Kansas where she had been a patient for a short time.

She was born April 13, 1907 in Cortland, Nebraska, the daughter of James and Christine Schell. She grew up there and graduated from Cortland High School in 1924. Following high school, she attended a business college in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was married to Francis Riley and they lived in Lincoln and Hallam, Nebraska. They were later divorced. She was employed as a telephone operator at Hallam. In 1939 she moved to Seneca. She married Clarence Boles on January 3, 1941 in Pawnee City, Nebraska. He preceded her in death on January 10, 1984.

She and her husband Clarence owned and operated the Nighthawk Tavern on Main Street in Seneca, which they sold in 1952. Erma was also employed at the Paramount Cleaners in Seneca. They owned and operated the Pontiac Agency in Seneca from 1941 to 1952. In 1953 they moved to Topeka where she was employed by the State of Kansas in the centralized mailroom. Later she worked as a PBX operator for the State of Kansas until her retirement in 1972. She moved to an assisted living center in Gardner, Kansas, in November of 2000. Following a hip fracture, she moved to Villa of St. Francis in Olathe on March 13, 2001.

She attended the Catholic Church.

Survivors are a son, Larry Riley of Olathe, Kansas; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister Hollis Geistlinger.

Graveside services will be 11 A.M. Saturday, December 15 at the Seneca City Cemetery, Seneca, Kansas. Family and friends will meet at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca Saturday at 10:30 A.M. and proceed to the cemetery.

Memorials may be given for Crossroads Hospice of Kansas City, 7611 State Line, Kansas City, Missouri 64114.
