from 1957 - 1987, former salesman for DeKalb Seed Co. and a retired

She was a former seamstress at L. G. A. M. Manufacturing in
Woodsfield. She was a member of the St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield,
where she was a member of the Catholic Women s Club, the Purgatorial Society,
and the St. Francis Society. She had also been a former 4-H advisor in

Francis J. Heft, 87, 45554 Ohio 145, Lewisville, Ohio, died
ay 14, 1999 at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was born at Lewisville on
October 11, 1911, a son of the late Lewis and Minnie Christman Heft.
He was a graduate of Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, was a
retired school teacher having taught in various schools throughout Monroe
County, Ohio for more than 30 years; was a former member of the Ohio House of
Representatives
serving Monroe County for eight terms. He was a member of St. Paul s United
Church of Christ, Woodsfield and was a former Sunday School Superintendent at
the former St. Peter s United Church of Christ in Lewisville. He was also a
very active member of the Ohio Republican Party.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Vivian Harper Heft, whom
he married on February 5, 1938; three daughters, Mrs. William (Ruth) Bartilson
of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Kenneth(Nina) Grigsby, of Canyon Lake, Texas, Mrs.
Neil (Marjorie) Frankl of Park Hills, Kentucky; two sons, David Heft and his
wife, Janet of Kailu-Kona, Hawaii, Eric Heft and his wife, Nicki of Des Moines,
Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Catherine Heft of Englewood; a sister, Mrs.
Clarence (Melba) Reich of Jerusalem, Ohio; three brothers, William Heft and his
wife, b of Clearwater, Florida, Stanley Heft and his wife, of Aurora; 16
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
first wife, Lucille Harper Heft, in 1937; a daughter, Joan Heft, in 1937; a
son, Karl Heft on April 14, 1999; a sister, Bessie Sutherland; two
brothers, Theodore and Paul Heft.

Audrey Luzelle Highman Gatten Shafer, 90, of Woodsfield
Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Woodsfield, formerly of Route 2, Lewisville,
died May 16, 1999 at Barnesville Hospital. She was born March 14, 1909 at
Sarahsville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Charles Highman and Pearl Nalley
Highman.
She was a member of the Richfork Church of Christ. She lived her life based on
the concept of the Golden Rule. Her family can attest to her love, patience and
self-sacrifice. She will be remembered by her friends and neighbors for her
hospitality, friendliness and generosity.
Virginia K. Groves, nee Matthews

Virginia K. Groves, 78, 50810 State Route 145, Malaga, Ohio,
died May 24, 1999 at her home. She was born December 6, 1920, in Malaga, a
daughter of the late Nelson and Olga Wilcox Matthews.
She was a member of the Somerton United Methodist Church,
Somerton, Ohio, the Acorn Twig of Barnesville Hospital, Barnesville, Ohio, was
a 4-H advisor for many years as well as a volunteer at Barnesville Hospital for
over 25 years.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Carl Groves; two sons
and daughters-in-law, Paul and Nancy Groves, of Cleveland, Ohio, Gary and Donna
Groves, of Washington, D. C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Don (Janet)
Crissinger, of Mulberry, Florida and Mrs. Gary (Ann) Bilyeu, of Malaga, Ohio;
10 grandchildren and a great-grandson.

center. She was born at Lewisville, May 28, 1904, a daughter of the late
William E. and Elsie Gardner Denbow.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Woodsfield Church of
Nazarene, Woodsfield.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Earl (Helen) Weber, of
Newark, Ohio; two sons, Vernon Stimpert and his wife, Norma, of Zanesville, Sam
Stimpert and his wife, Barbara, of Howard; a brother, Floyd Denbow, of
Lewisville; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great
grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Clarence Stimpert on November 7, 1977; a son, Robert Stimpert; a
daughter, Mildred Highman; two brothers, Lawrence and Clayton Denbow.

Miriam Kilburn Cline Saffle, 73, 226 Eastern Avenue,
Woodsfield, died November 1, 1999 at Mecklenberg Health Care Center, Charlotte,
North Carolina. She was born in Monroe County, Ohio, May 15, 1926, a daughter
of the late Charles and Anna Bintz Kilburn.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Stacy and Leissa
Cline, of Akron, Ohio; a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Jim (Linda) Novak, of
Charlotte; a sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. David (Mildred) Touvelle, of
Barnesville, Ohio; a grand-daughter and her husband, Mrs. Jeff (Kattie) Spies,
of Charlotte, North Carolina.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
first husband, Frederic E. Cline, February 10, 1979; her second husband, John
Saffle, December 20, 1990.

Bernard L. Jones

Bernard L. Jones, 72, of Brunswick, died Monday, Nov. 1,
1999, at Holy Family Home in Parma, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Jerusalem, Ohio, and was a Medina County
resident for 28 years, formerly residing in Parma and Cleveland. Mr. Jones was
a 1945 graduate of Medina High School, where he was class president. He was a
member
of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Brunswick, where he and his wife were very active
in the Church parish. Among his many hobbies, he was an avid outdoorsman and
sportsman, enjoying sailing, nature, gardening, cross country skiing, and the
pilot of his own plane. He also enjoyed motorcycling and was a member of the
American Motorcycle Association and the Gold Ring Rider Association, where he
was invited to serve on the drill team. Mr. Jones served the Boy Scouts of
America as cub master, merit badge counselor and Frontier District chairman in
Cuyahoga County. Bernard made many woodworking projects which he loved to share
with others.
He was employed as a detective for the Cleveland Police
Department for 28 years, where he served in the chief's office of special
investigation. After retiring from the force, he was a security guard for
Strongsville Middle School. He then worked for Cleveland State University as
superintendent of buildings for 11 years.
Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He
enlisted in January 1945 and was discharged in 1946. He then served four years
in the Naval Reserve.
He is survived by his wife Natalie (Sonja) Jones, to whom he
would have been married 50 years in 2000; sons, Curtis L. (Jill) Jones and
Thomas A. (Sylvia) Jones, both of Texas; grandsons, Matthew L. Jones, William
A. Jones and Eric A. Jones; and sister, Dorothea (Gilbert) Schaefer of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William A.
and Grace Jones; and five brothers and sisters.
Mass of Christian
Burial: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 929 Pearl Road,
Brunswick. Father Robert Hilkert will officiate. Burial: Myrtle Hill Cemetery.

Walter J. Ackerman, 79, of 33133 Skin Creek Road,
Lewisville, Ohio, died November 5, 1999, at his home. He was born near
Lewisville on February 6, 1920.
He was a very active dairy farmer for many years and was a
member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Miltonsburg, Ohio, where he had
served on the parish council for many years. He was also a member of the
Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society and a 35 year member of the A. S.
C. S.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Alberta Mae Stephen Ackerman, whom he

John L. Shafer, 95, of Richfork Road, Lewisville, Ohio, and
formerly of Ashland and Richland County, Ohio, passed away November 6, 1999, at
Kingston of Ashland Nursing Home, after a long illness. He was born September
25, 1904 in Woodsfield, a son of the late Stephen and Bertha Sheckles Shafer.
He had retired from the Civil Service and was a member of
the Richfork Church of Christ.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John L. and Sondra
Shafer, of Mansfield, Ohio; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Ted (Doris)
McFadden, of Ashland, Mrs. Jack (Helen) Rosenbluh, of Mansfield, Mrs. Kenneth
(Dorothy) Smith, of Ashland; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 10
great-great-grandchildren; numerous step-children, step-grandchildren,
step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
first wife, Katherine Tagmyer, whom he married on May 20, 1929, died in 1964;
his second wife Opal Shaw, died in 1973; his third wife, Audrey Highman Gatten
married April 20, 1974, died May 16, 1999; and a daughter, Evelyn Shafer.
Friends were received November 9 an hour prior to the
service at Heyl Funeral Home, Ashland, with Travis Irwin officiating. Burial in

Mabel Adele Ramser, 92, Highland Avenue, Shadyside, died
November 13, 1999, at the Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire. She was born
January 4, 1907, at Boltz Ridge, near Clarington, Ohio, a daughter of the late
Everett and Josie Roth Boltz.
She was a retired employee of the former Sterling Products
of Wheeling, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Shadyside, and
Shadyside Garden Club.
Surviving are her husband, Russell E. Ramser; three sons,
Robert A., of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, John, of Allison Park,
Pennsylvania, Bill, of Sherrard, West Virginia; a daughter, Mrs. Dean (Mary
Ann) Torges, of Ostrander, Ohio; a brother, Clay Boltz of Clarington; 20
grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two
sons, Russell E. Ramser, Jr. and Dr. Richard J. Ramser; a brother, Lester
Boltz; a sister, Gladys Boltz.

He was born Dec. 13, 1919 in Antioch to Henry and
Caroline (Nalley) Bonam and married Elsie Selvy on May 5, 1962. She
survives. He was a U.S. Army veteran of
World War II and was employed at the Bauer Ladder Co. for 27 years. He was also
a custodian at Franklin elementary school for 10 years. He had played music in many country bands
through the years and had played music for residents in many nursing
homes.
Surviving in addition to his wife are children and
their spouses, Gary L and Barbara Bonam of Akron, Richard C. and Donna Bonam of
Columbia, S.C., and Debra and Dale Badertscher of Wooster; seven grandchildren;
and a great-grandchild. Sisters, Mary
Cline and Grace Hooper and brothers, Donald and Clarence Bonam, died
previously.
Rosetta V. Jones Kinney, 62, of 39444 s.r. 26, Woodsfield, died January 6,1999 at her home. She was born at Woodsfield on July 26, 1936, a daughter of Freda (McCammon) Jones and the late William E. (Ed) Jones.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Graysville
Church of Christ at Graysville.
In addition to her mother, surviving are her
husband, Vernon I. Kinney whom she married on April 7, 1962; two sons, Merle
Huntsman and his wife Terri of Graysville; Vince Kinney of the home; a daughter
Mrs. John (Sherry) Stout of Belpre; five brothers, James Jones of Jerusalem,
John Jones , Richard Jones, Jerry Jones, all of Woodsfield., Joe Jones of

Rafferty, Alicia Pullman, Lindsey Huntsman, and Megan Schumacher.

late Willard and Viola Taylor Morris.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Theodore Kurtz; one daughter Mary Kurtz; four brothers,
Oscar, James A. Otto, and Elijah Morris.
Surviving are four sons, Donald Kurtz of
Barnesville; Jim Kurtz of Naples, Fla., William Kurtz of Newark and John Kurtz
of Somerton; five daughters, Minnie Saffell of Armstrong Mills, Helen Nelms of Duffy,

"Jackie" Lorraine Yansoik, 69, of Quaker City, died Wednesday (Dec.
8, 1999) at her home.
She was born March 19, 1930 at Salesville, daughter of Sylvia
Carpenter Leach Foraker of Quaker City and the late William Leach.
Mrs. Yansoik worked for 29 years as a supervisor at
Cambridge State Hospital. She was a member of the Central Christian Church of
Quaker City and a 1948 graduate of Quaker City High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Yansoik in
October 1995. Also deceased are a son Everett C. "Peep" Wehr and a
brother Bill Leach.
Mrs. Yansoik leaves a son,
Kevin (Laura) Wehr of Quaker City; a daughter, LouAnn Leach of Quaker City; two
brothers, Robert (Lequitta) of Dell City, Okla., and Jim (Rachel) Leach of
Cambridge; a sister Mrs. Leola (Dick) Gisesy of Quaker City; five
grandchildren, Kalib, Shana, Timothy, Rachel and Jennifer.

well driller, and a former employee of Conalco Corp. He was a member of the
Woodsfield Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles
and Tobitha Edington Hogue; three brothers, Hildreth, Clifford and Walter; four
sisters; Bernice, Goldie, Gaylia Hogue and Edna McElfresh. Surviving are his
wife, Marjorie M. Nalley Hogue; a son, Gailord of Woodsfield; two daughters,
Bonnie Rothenbuhler of Beallsville and Sharon Weber of Woodsfield; a sister.

National Bank, Byesville and The Style Center in Cambridge for 20 years. She was a member of the Main Avenue

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Herlan,
former owner of Herlan Funeral Home, Byesville, who died in 1949; a daughter, Louise Herlan.

Ree Carpenter, 47, of Quaker City, died Tuesday (May 11, 1999) at the
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pa., following a brief
illness.
He was born Aug.
19, 1951, in Cambridge, son of Herbert and Esther Mallett Carpenter of Quaker
City.
Mr. Carpenter was
employed as a mine worker for 27 years with Ohio Valley Coal No. 6, Aladonia,
and was a Wayne Township trustee. He
attended the Calais Community Church.
He was a member of United Mine Workers, Masonic Lodge 500, Quaker City
and the Mine Safety Rescue Team. He was
a 1969 graduate of Shenandoah High School and attended Rio Grande College where
he played baseball.
He was preceded in
death by his grandparents, Alva and Mary Carpenter and Paul and Tillie Mallett.
In addition to his
parents he leaves his wife, Lorrie Steed Carpenter, whom he married Dec. 23,
1998; two sons, Shawn Carpenter and Jeremy Steed, both of the home; a daughter, Konna Carpenter of Columbus; and
several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Rick Buchholzer, 45, died unexpectedly Jan. 13, 1999.
Born in Akron, he was a parishioner of St. Sebastian
Catholic Church. Rick was a student at Avon Old Farm School in Avon, Conn., and
a graduate of Firestone High School Class of 1972. He attended the University
of Akron and Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.
He was president of Voxcom Recording Studio and obtained
his first-class FCC Broadcast Engineer License at KTWU in Topeka, Kan., and
later worked at TV and radio stations in Amarillo, Texas, Louisville, Ky., and
Cambridge, OH, before returning to Akron and becoming a founding partner in
Engineering Broadcast Systems.
In addition to his business, Rick was an accomplished
guitarist, teacher, inventor, community volunteer, and engineering consultant.
Rick is survived by father, Richard B. Buchholzer;
stepmother, Frances Seiberling Buchholzer; stepsister, Elizabeth Sturtevant
Eckhardt; uncle, Bruce H. Buchholzer; aunts, Eleanor Buchholzer Erickson and
Edna J. Buchholzer; and many cousins and other relatives.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at

McBride. He was a retired tire builder for General Tire in Akron, and had

Fraternal Order of Eagles 2302 in Woodsfield, Ohio, and a board member of the

years. The daughter of the late Frank
and Anna (Latta) Turner was born August 15, 1911 in Woodsfield, Ohio. She married Ralph (Red) Walters in
1960. He passed away in 1990. Bess owned and operated a beauty salon for
many years in Saginaw's south side. She
loved to read, crochet and especially loved fishing up north with Red. Surviving are her children and their
spouses, Joanne and Frank Rifenbark, Bad Axe; Dennis and Laura Allen, Ann
Arbor; Lloyd Allen Jr., Saginaw; Betty and Leonard Cliff, Saginaw; a
step-daughter, Toby and Gary Gaertner; Saginaw; ten grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren, a brother and sister, Roger Turner, Olney, Ill; Mary
Again,* Circleville, Ohio; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two stepsons, Ron Walters
and Ralph Walters, Jr. and by five sisters and two brothers, Katie Swisher,
Billie Palmer, Robert Ward Turner, Bernice Starr, Howard Turner, Mable
Riggenbaugh and Nellie Jones.
Funeral service will take place 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 1,
1999, at the W.L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Rd. Rev. Walter David will officiate with
entombment in Oakwood Mausoleum.
Friends may call at the Chapel from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00
p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers those
planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the American Heart

Road died at 7:50 p.m. Monday (May 24, 1999) at the Monroe County Care Center
in Woodsfield.
He was born Oct. 18, 1904, near Graysville to Sylvester and
Lola Dougherty Jones. He was a retired
member of Graysville United Methodist Church in Graysville; Monroe Lodge 189,
Free and Accepted Masons at Woodsfield; and a 58-year member of Graysville
Grange 2681 at Graysville.
He is survived by one sister, Blanche Alls of Akron; and
several nieces and nephews including Greg Alls and his wife, Patty, and Karen
Gebouer and her husband, Lothar, all of Akron.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Jones;
his second wife, Nellie A. Turner Jones, on May 13, 1988; his parents; and one
sister.
Services are at 1 p.m.
Thursday at Watters Funeral Home in Woodsfield with Pastor Gary Fitzgerald
officiating. Burial is in Oaklawn
Cemetery in Woodsfield. Friends will be

Rehabilitation Center. She was born in
Monroe County, April 11, 1911, a daughter of the late William J. Weber and

She was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville, the Women's Guild, a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Lewisville, and a member of the Eastern Star of Woodsfield.

station chief for Texas Eastern Transmission Corp., Summerfield.
He was a member of
Buchanan Presbyterian Church, Lewisville, where he served as elder, trustee and
treasurer.
He was a member of Masonic

He was a lifelong resident
of Monroe County.
He was preceded in death
by his wife, Mabel Young Steele, who died in 1998; five brothers, Alfred I.
Steele, C.B. Steele, Arthur Steele, G. Roy Steele and O. Russell Steele; and
two sisters, Maude Steele and M. Audrey Steele Hamilton.
He leaves four daughters,

9:35 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2000 at her home. She was born at Lewisville, Oh.
on September 1, 1939, a daughter of Gladys R. Christman Reich who survives of
Lewisville, Oh. and the late Vernon Reich.
She was a former optometric assistant for Dr. Douglas E.
Huff in Barnesville, Oh. and was also a former Avon Representative. She was a
member of the Trinity United Church of Christ near Lewisville, Oh., where she
was a member of the choir and the Women's Guild. She was also a former 4-H
advisor in Monroe County, Oh. for many years.
Surviving in addition to her mother, she is survived by her
husband, Forrest O. "Frosty" Frank, whom she married on June 8, 1957;
daughter, Aimee Bartenschlag and her husband, Donald of Zanesville, Oh.; sons,
Forrest V. Frank and his wife, Becky of Findlay, Oh. and Matthew D. Frank and
his wife, Paula of Grandview Heights, Oh.; two sisters, Sandra Yontz and her
husband, Dale of Woodsfield, Oh. and Rose Frank and her husband, Ed of

Robert Woodrow Cline, 83, of 38126 Wolf
Pen Rd., Woodsfield, died Sept. 22, 2000, in the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield. He was born near Woodsfield, Dec. 12, 1916,
a son of the late Alonzo E and Arrena E. Highman Cline.
He was a retired farmer and a member of
the Conner Ridge United Methodist Church, near Woodsfield. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during
WWII where he received two bronze stars, a purple heart, and was a prisoner of
war. He was also a life member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 5303, Woodsfield.
Surviving are his wife, Jean E. Turner
Cline, whom he married June 10, 1940; four sisters, Mrs. Herb (Grethel) Shafer,
Ashland, Wilma Babcock, Frazeysburg, Jean Ambrus, Newark, Mrs. Roy (Dorothy)
Fink, Newark; two brothers, Kenneth D. Cline and his wife Rosalie, Woodsfield,
Hilton "Pete" Cline and his wife, Evelyn, Polk; several nieces and
nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert, Denzil and Eddie Cline.

Hulda
Young, 92, Miltonsburg Community, Rt. 3, Woodsfield, died March 27, 2000, at
her home. She was born in St. Louis,
Mo., June 18, 1907, a daughter of the late George and Amanda Meusch Landefeld.
She was the last surviving child of the six Landefeld brothers and sisters who
emigrated from Obergude, Gemany to Monroe County between 1865 and 1885.
Surviving are a daughter, Judith Ann
Young, Washington, DC; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul E. Jr., and Barbara
Young, Columbus; three grandchildren; Lisa Lee, Stockton, Calif., Bret Young, Washington,
D.C., Sara Young, Madison, Wisc.; two great-grandchildren; Amanda and Bo Lee; a
brother-in-law, Richard Riemenschneider, Zanesville.
In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Young, Sr., May 20, 1988.

Ralph E. Matz, 84, Chillicothe, died Nov.
20, 2000, in Chillicothe following a brief illness. He was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Woodsfield, the son of William F.
and Mary Ann Schaub Matz.
He was a retired corrections officer with
the Federal Prison Service. A U.S. Navy
veteran, he served with the Seabees in WW II.
As a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in West Virginia, his
group was responsible for the construction of two State Parks. For many years he was active in the National
Association of Retired Federal Employees on the local and state level. He was an active member of the Orchard Hill
United Church of Christ, Chillicothe.
Surviving are two sons and
daughters-in-law, Roger and Jenny Matz, Wheeling, William E. and Connie Matz,
Boerne, TX; five grandchildren, Laura, Gregory, Katherine, Andrew and Kathleen;
a great-grandson, Marcellus; nephew, Jim and wife, Rita Matz, Lebanon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded
in death by three brothers; two sisters; his wife, Dorothy Anne Miller, Jan.
14, 1996, whom he married May 15, 1949.

home. He was born near Lewisville,
1906, a son of the late William and Elsie Grace Gardner Denbow.
He was a retired furnace operator for the
Barneby Engineering Co. in Columbus, and was a Methodist by faith.
Surviving are a son, Floyd F. Denbow and
his wife, Mabel, Woodsfield; a daughter, Margaret E Ferguson, Columbus; four
grandchildren, Fred Denbow, LeSage, W.VA., Tom Denbow, Gallipolis, Theresa
Fogle and Laura Droese, both of Columbus; 11 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandson.

Church of Christ, enjoyed quilting at the church and the day care center.

of Christ.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jolena Marie Hart
Jackson, on Jan. 17, 2000.
She leaves her husband, Edwin Carl Hart; a daughter, Mrs.
Carl (Vickie) Ady of Beallsville; three sons, Robert (Joann) Burgett of
Caldwell, Edwin (Penny) Hart and Carl Jeffery (Tammy) Hart, both of Macksburg;
two sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Jerri) Williams of Weston, W.Va., and Mrs. Roger

Mrs. Crock retired from Texas Instruments.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gregory Crock.

at the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield.
She was born Oct. 6, 1914, in Monroe County, daughter of the
late Clarence Edward Starr and Clara Paulus Starr.
Mrs. Dixon was a member of the Presbyterian Church of
Woodsfield, Lydia Temple, Pythian Sisters, Past Chef s Club and the Ladies
Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 87, Woodsfield.
She previously worked with the senior citizens organization
of Monroe County. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Alfred O. Dixon, in 1972; two brothers, Roy Starr and
Vernon Starr; and an infant sister, Helen Lenora Starr.
She leaves three sons, Eddie (Patsy) Dixon of New Carlisle,
Donald (Jeannie) Dixon of Woodsfield and David (Crystal) Dixon of Lewisville,
Ohio; a daughter, Phyllis (Jerald) Tadlock of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers,
Clarence Tiny (Fern) Starr of Norton and Ralph Starr of Fort Pierce,Florida;
two sisters, Lucy (Franklin) Mallett of New Carlisle and Mary Opal Starr of
Woodsfield; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

He was born July 11, 1932, near Woodsfield, son of the late
William J. and Dorothy A. (Hughes) Mehler.
Mr. Mehler was a retired service station attendant at
Masters Garage in Woodsfield. He was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church,
Woodsfield, where he was also belonged to the Purgatorial Society.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernetta McCaslin.
He leaves his wife, Gwen J. Mehler, whom he married, Aug. 2,
1964; a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Jane) McBride of Jerusalem; a son, Richard
Andrew (Terri) Mehler of Morristown, Ohio; four sisters, Kathleen Hannahs,
Marie Kirkland, Rose Mehler and Clara Kelley, all of Woodsfield; two brothers,
Fred Mehler of Moundsville and George Mehler of Woodsfield; five grandchildren;

Mr. Piatt retired from Conalco Aluminum Co., Hannibal, and
was a partner of the former Piatt Brothers Contracting Co., Woodsfield.
He was a member of the Woodsfield United Methodist Church,
Woodsfield.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Nina Mae Piatt; four
brothers, Rome Piatt, Watson Piatt, Howard Piatt and Gene Piatt.

Rudy (Edna) Olson of Green Bay, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Lucille Wright Neff of

He was born Dec. 12, 1916, near Woodsfield, son of the late

Mr. Cline was a retired farmer and a member of the Conner
Ridge United Methodist Church, near Woodsfield.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.
During his service in the military he received two Bronze Stars a Purple Heart
and was a prisoner of war.
He was a life member of the VFW Post 5303, Woodsfield.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert, Denzil
and Eddie Cline.
He leaves his wife, Jean E. Turner Cline, whom he married
June 10, 1940; four sisters, Mrs. Herb (Grethel) Shafer of Ashland, Wilma
Babcock of Frazeysburg, Jean Ambrus and Mrs. Roy (Dorothy) Fink, both of
Newark; two brothers, Kenneth D. (Rosalie) Cline of Woodsfield and Hilton
Pete (Evelyn) Cline of Polk; several nieces and nephews.

Cattaraugus, N.Y., died Friday, September 22, 2000 near Woodsfield, following
injuries sustained in a tractor accident.
He was born July 25, 1931, in Gowanda, N.Y., son of the late
C. Wesley and Alta Manning Mosher.
Mr. Mosher was a retired farmer and a Nazarene by faith.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Neil Wesley Howard
Mosher.
He leaves his wife, Hope Vincent Mosher, whom he married

Prestwood, who died in 1990.

Bernice N. Hendershot, 93, of Woodsfield Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center, Woodsfield, formerly of Marr, died 7:30 p.m. Sunday
(Oct. 8, 2000) at the center.
She was born Oct. 23, 1906, near Marr, daughter of the late
Samuel David and Laura Martin Hendershot.
She was a graduate of the former Bethel High School at Marr,
a graduate of the Monroe County Normal School and a graduate of Muskingum
College, New Concord.
She was a retired school teacher having taught in various
schools throughout Monroe County for 40 years. She was a member of Creighton
Ridge Church of Christ near Sycamore Valley where she was baptized June 5,
1925, by Brother J.M. Cochran.
She also was a member of the Ohio State Retired Teachers
Association, National Retired Teachers Association and Monroe County Retired
Teachers Association.
Miss Hendershot lived and died in service and devotion to
her family, the schools, the community, the Church and to God.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a
sister, Gladys Winland, and a brother, Clyde Hendershot.
She leaves two nephews, LaVerne (Darlene) Winland of Lower
Salem and Tom (Denise) Hendershot of New Brunswick, Canada; a niece, Janie
Dodge of Zanesville; two great-nephews, Randy (Sandy) Winland of Prospect and

Taylor.

Union Grange and was also a member of Apple Creek Senior Citizens.
Surviving are a son, Charles W. Dillon of Wooster; a daughter, Phyllis
E. Kinney of Texas; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and three
great-great grandchildren. Her first
husband, Charles R. Dillon, died in 1957 and her second husband, Lawrence Lisk,
died in 1988. Two brothers, Charles K. and Thomas T. Stauch, also died

She was born Sept. 22, 1910, in Guernsey County, daughter of

Mrs. Secrest was a member of Woodsfield Presbyterian Church,
where she was a member of the ECILA Circle and a former Sunday school teacher.
She was active in community affairs and a member of Monroe
County Democratic Central Committee and a former member of the Rebekah Lodge. She was preceded in death by her husband,
William A. Secrest, who died 1998; a sister, Lela Oliver; a brother, Paul
Hartup; and a granddaughter, Theresa Secrest.
She leaves two sons, Jim Secrest and David Secrest, both of
Woodsfield; two daughters, Carol Schumacher of Woodsfield and Cathy Thornhill
of Kittery, Maine; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Frederick E. Rosenlieb, 88, of Trail Run Community, Sardis,
Ohio died Friday (Nov. 17, 2000) at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 17, 1912, in Monroe County, a son of the
late Joseph and Sara Angus Rosenlieb.
He was retired from the Switzerland of Ohio School District
maintenance department, a self-employed oil field worker, member of the Unity
Baptist Church and Sunday School superintendent for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Lohri
Rosenlieb, on Aug. 14, 1991; two sisters, Mildred Brown and Hazel Shai; and
three brothers, Albert, Francis and Glo Rosenlieb.
He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Neil (Nancy) Ellis of Sardis; a
sister, Lula Bell Huffman of Canton; three grandsons, Bob Ellis of New
Matamoras and Jerry and Fred Ellis of Sardis; and four great-grandchildren.

She was born April 21, 1924, in Monroe County, daughter of
the late Clyde and Eloise (Mann) Menkle [sic].
Mrs. Haren was a member of Woodsfield Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard J. Haren;
a daughter, Rosemary Grubbs; and a son, James E. Haren. She leaves a daughter,
Mrs. Dale (Jo Palmer) Eddy of Woodsfield; a brother, James R. Menkel of
Woodsfield; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.

He was born May 29, 1904, in Monroe County, son of the late

Mr. Devore was a retired school teacher, having taught in
Monroe County schools. He was a member of Northend Church of Christ, Ashland.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis (Anderson)
Devore; a son, George Devore, Jr.; three brothers; a grandchild; and a
great-grandchild.
He leaves a son, Robert E. Devore of Jacksonville, Fla.; a
daughter, Ruth E. Mackey; two brothers, Austin Devore and Thurman Devore, all
of Ashland; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four
great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Sorg attended St. Nicholas Catholic Church and was a
50-year member of Timber Run Range.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl L. Sorg, who
died Feb. 27, 2000; and a brother, Carl Zwick.

She was born Jan. 20, 1924, in Stanleyville, Washington
County, daughter of the late George H. Miller and Wava Virginia Zimmer Miller.
She was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church,
Woodsfield; former 4-H adviser and a member of the St. Sylvester Church Women s
Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband of 55 years, Ellis Smithberger, who died Oct. 1999; and an infant
daughter, Andrea Ellen Smithberger.
She leaves two sons, Donald Smithberger of St. Clairsville
and Delbert (Nancy) Smithberger of Woodsfield; two daughters, Mrs. David (Mary)
Tubaugh of Columbus and Mrs. Jerry (Susan) Cunion of Woodsfield; four brothers,
Bemon Miller and Lewis Miller, both of Marietta, Paul Miller of Parkersburg,
W.Va. and Dale Miller of Colorado.; a sister, Irma Jean Poole of Marietta;

Stanley R. Stine, 62, of Lewisville, died Saturday (Dec. 23,
2000) at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling, W.Va.
He was born March 14, 1938, in Antioch, Monroe County, son
of the late Arthur and Margaret (Cline) Stine.
Mr. Stine was former owner of the former Belmont Grill in
Woodsfield. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, and self employed laborer.
He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Stine; a sister,
Bonnie Lallathin; and a brother, Delbert Stine.
He leaves three sons, Stanley Stine Jr. of Texas, Dwayn
Stine and Brian Stine, both of West Virginia; a daughter, Lisa of North
Carolina; a brother, Don Stine of Antioch; a sister, Mary Jean Baker of Lower
Salem; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Lester W. Landefeld, 84, of Woodsfield, formerly of Keylor
Hill Road, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center following an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 8, 1916, in Monroe County, son of the late Herman J. and
Freda (Reich) Landefeld.
Mr. Landefeld was a retired farmer, carpenter and school bus
driver for the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District. He was a member of
Woodsfield Church of Christ, where he had served as Elder from 1967. He was a
U.S. veteran, having served in World War II.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years,
Gladys (Egger) Landefeld, who died in 1984; two sisters, Marie Riser and
Mildred Christman; a brother, Walter Landefeld.
He leaves his wife, Letha (Garrett) Landefeld; a daughter,
Mrs. Michael (Patricia) Antonik of Bellaire; three sons, David (Joyce), Darrell
(Beverly) and Duane (Barbara), all of Woodsfield; a brother, Harold of
Miltonsburg; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Jesse Junior Morris, 56, of
He worked for the Medina County Gazette. He was a
deacon and active member of the first Church of Christ in Rittman. He was also
an avid Indians fan.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Ady, whom he married
Jan, 27, 1968: three daughters, Dianna Morris, Sharon Morris, Janice Morris;
two sons, Jesse Junior Morris II, Jason Morris; two grandchildren, David and

member of the American Flint Glass Workers Union, Paden city.

Latta, age 92 a resident of the CantonRegency, passed away there Monday

an illness of several months. She was born in Alliance, a
daughter of the late Herbert and Viva Agnes Sonnhalter, and had been a resident
of the North Canton-Canton area most of her life. She was a 1926 graduate
of North Canton High School. Mrs. Latta was a member of the Canton Art
Institute where she had served on the Board of Directors, and also a member of
the Whiskey Painters of America. Preceded in death by her husband, Elton L.
Latta on Sept. 14, 1966. Survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and
Carolyn Sonnhalter, of Stow; two nieces and one nephew, Joy Wynn and her
husband, William of Stow; Jill Hetland and her husband, Daniel, of Cross
Junction, VA; and Jon Sonnhalter and his wife Linda, of Cuyahoga Falls; and two

21,1931, a daughter of the late Velma Isabelle Wise Holiday. She was a former seamtress for L.G.A.M.
Manufacturing in Woodsfield, and a member of the former Mt. Tabor Methodist
Church, near Summerfield. She was also a former member of the Franklin
Homemakers Club near Lewisville.

are her husband, Junior E. Leasure, whom she married May 6, 1950; six

Ida Dick Zwick. He was a retired farmer
and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, near Lewisville.

(Calais Community) died June 13, 2000 in the Ohio State University Hospital,
Columbus. He was born near Henrysbug, Jan. 23, 1932, a son of the late Arch and

He was a retired equipment operator for B&N/Quinn Development
in Dexter City and St. Clairsville.

Huff, John T., 61, of 44 West Main Street, Hayesville,
died February 1, 2000, at Akron City Hospital. He was born in Fly, September
22, 1938, the son of the late Robert and Mae Elizabeth Winland Huff. He had been a pump assembler at Hydromatic
Pump Company for 30 years. He was a member of the Sardis Baptist Church and had
served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He had coached
summer ball in Hayesville for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Sara Henthorn Huff, to whom
he was married March 29, 1964; two daughters and one son-in-law; Rita Parker,
of Loudenville, Mrs. Jeff (Brenda) Fisher, of Hayesville; a son and
daughter-in-law, Randy and Rhonda Huff, of Jeromesville; six grandchildren; two
brothers, Raymond Huff of Florida, Jack Huff, of Bellaire; four sisters,
Deloris Fletcher, of Lorain, Mary Carr, of Cambridge, Lucille Rose, of

Zelma M. Neuhart, 85, of Cambridge, died Tuesday (Aug. 8,
2000) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. She was born March 21, 1915, near Summerfield, daughter of
the late Frank and Martha (Guiler) Mummey.
Mrs. Neuhart was a
graduate of Griffith Beauty College in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was a beauty
operator at the former Deluxe Beauty Shop and beautician at the former
Cambridge State Hospital, where she retired as managing cosmologist. She was a member of the Ninth Street United
Methodist Church.
She was preceded in
death by her husband, Ralph E. Neuhart, on Dec. 3, 1995. They were married Nov.
21, 1936. Also deceased is a brother, Dwight Mummey and a sister, Vivian
LaFollett. She leaves a sister,
Norma Burton of Delaware; a brother-in-law Richard (Irene) Neuhart of

28, 2000, at Brightwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Follansbee.
She was born Nov. 30, 1898, in Woodsfield, a daughter of
the late Clifford and Martha Moose. In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Homer
Ricer; her second husband, Arthur Baker; two daughters, Virginia Buzzard and
Martha Boggs; two brothers, Bill and Flenn Moose; and five sisters, Jennie,
Elvy, Muta, Thelma and Helen Moose.
She was a homemaker and Methodist by faith.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ted (Patricia) Miller of
Wintersville, Mrs. Junior (Joan) Truax of Woodsfield, Betty Buelich of Monroe,
N.C., and Mrs. Edward (Margaret) Kessler of Wellston, Ohio; 18 grandchildren,
45 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Calling hours are from 7-9 p.m. today at the Steel and
Wolfe Funeral Home, 3721 Main St., where services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday
with the Rev. Michael Shuman officiating.

Center, Cambridge. He was born Jan.17, 1925 in Somerton, a son of the
late Lester and Myrtle Stephen Huntsman. He was a retired dispatcher with
the Barnesville Police Dept., a Protestant, a member of F.O.P. Lodge 6, 50 year
member of I.O.O.M. of Barnesville, Lions Club of Barnesville and canteen member
of V.F.W. Post 2792 of Barnesville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by two brothers; Francis and Delbert Huntsman.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Phillips Huntsman; a
daughter, Mrs. George (Pam) Hoover of Beallsville; a step-son, Ronald Linville
of Columbus; a step-daughter, Regina Kindler of Florida; four sisters, Lena

Barnesville; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.

Virginia, formerly of Gilliam, West Virginia, died Jan. 20, 2000 at the home of
her daughter, Betty Lodolo, Northfork, following a lingering illness. She was
born Sept. 1, 1894, near Antioch, the daughter of Albert and Leonah Smith
Eikleberry. She was a former member of the Unity Baptist Church before
transferring
her membership to the Northfork Baptist Church in 1923, where she actively
served in various offices in the church and the women's society. She was a
member of the Keystone/ Northfork Women's Club, the Garden Club and was active
in Girl Scout activities. She was a resident of McDowell County since 1915.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Aldo (Betty)
Lodolo, Northfork; Mrs. Edwin (Mary) Dye, Marietta, Georgia; Mrs. Hillary
(Ruth) Hutchens, Burlington, N.C.; a son, Don Henthorn and wife Virginia of
Athens, W.Va.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces
and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Harry A. Henthorn, Sr.; a son, Harry "Cotton"
Henthorn, Jr.; a sister, Mrs. Ernest (Caroline) Brown, Sardis.

of 115 Main Street, Morristown, Oh, died March 26, 2000 at Ohio Valley Medical
Center in Wheeling, WV. He was born May 8, 1928, a son of Grover Cleveland
Henthorn and Addie Delphia Hall Henthorn.
He was an army veteran, a Baptist and retired from the automotive tire
industry.
In addition to his parents
he was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Mae Hughes Henthorn; two sisters,
Violet Greathouse and Betty Chambers; one brother, Jess Henthorn.
He is survived by three
daughters, Lorado Andears of Morristown, May Darrah of Graysville, WV; one

Burkhart , Bernard W. "Barney" , age 61 of Canton died Tuesday morning
in Aultman Hospital following an extended illness. Born May 27, 1939 in Monroe
County, Ohio to the late William and Frances Burkhart. He was a member of St.
Mary's Catholic Church of Canton where he was also a member of the Altar
Society. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and was retired from the Timken Co. in 1995
after 30 years of service. Preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon of the home, with whom he celebrated 35
years of marriage, one son and daughter-in-law, William and Bethanne Burkhart
of Wooster and one granddaughter, Lyndsay Burkhart. There is one brother,
Norbert Burkhart of Beallsville, Ohio and three sisters and brothers-in-law,
Rita and Victor Geier of Cleveland, Ohio, Mary and Bernard Brown and Phyllis Hietala,
all of Canton. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in
St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fr. Gerald J. Sommer, MSC, celebrant. Burial will
be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens.

H. Cunningham, 93, of Harriettsville (Ohio 145, Lower Salem) died Saturday
evening , December 23, 2000 at Heartland of Marietta. He was born
December 10, 1907, in Bethel Township, Monroe County, to James Lynn and Jemima
Springer Cunningham. He spent most of his life in the Harriettsville area and had been employed at Dragon
Manufacturing Co. until his retirement.
Cunningham served in the U.S. Army as a combat
engineer during World War II in the European, African, Middle East Theater. He
helped build bridges across the Rhine, Rohr and Elbe rivers and was awarded a
bronze star.
He was a member of the
Harriettsville baseball team that was Noble County champs in 1931, 1932 and
1933. He was a member of Harriettsville United Methodist Church and American
Legion Post 750 at Lowell. He had attended Lower Salem United Methodist Church.
On Dec. 24, 1931, he
married Marjorie Pauline Carnal, who survives with one son, James Cunningham of
Whipple; one daughter, Faye Love and her husband, Ronald, of Harriettsville; 12
grandchildren, Marilyn Kehl and her husband, Dan, David Cunningham and his
wife, Susan, Carolyn Bailey, Cindy Schott and her husband, Dan, Ryan Cunningham
and his wife, Holly, Debra Haney and her husband, Roger, Mike Love and his

Woodsfield. He retired from Consolidated Aluminum Corp. in 1984 and was a
carpenter by trade.

Thursday at Community Care Center. Born
on February 28, 1920, in Woodsfield, he was the son of Luther Smith Sr. and
Daisy (Nalley) Smith. He was a loader and finisher at Keystone B&W Tubular.
He retired in 1982 after 29 years of service to the company.
He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union Avenue
Church of Christ. He was a former deacon of the church and was song leader for
42 years. He also enjoyed hunting.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII serving in the
Pacific Theatre.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille (McConnell), whom he
married on Nov. 16, 1946. Other survivors include two daughters, Bonnie
Liebhart of Alliance and Vickie Myers of Clarksville, Tenn.; a son, Gary Lee
Smith of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Charlotte Cline of Woodsfield; a brother,
Edward Nalley of Canton; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two half
sisters.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m.

and Ross Staley.

Carl M. Agin who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1990, She was a member of the
Calvary United Methodist Church, Trailmakers Sunday School Class and Eastern
Star #90 for 50 years and a retired school cook for Logan Elm School District.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl Agin; two great-grandsons; six

Home, Circleville, with the Rev. James Hazlett officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory
Gardens. Eastern Star services will be
held 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral
home. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and
6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

COUGHLAN, Harold "Cougie" Andrew, 78, of Wheeling, died
Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, in the Wheeling Hospital.
He was
born June 7, 1922, in Wheeling, son of the late Francis M. and Oma Hendershot
Coughlan.
He was
a retired letter carrier of 50 years, from the Wheeling Postal Service; an Army
veteran of World War II, recipient of the Purple Heart from the Pacific
Theater; a member of Wheeling Elks. B.P.O.E. 28; a member of Bridgeport Eagles;
and a Methodist.
In
addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Eileen Kunz.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Clark Couglan, a son, Scott C. of Wheeling;
two daughters, Carole Coughlan and Nancy Chatlak and her husband John, all of
Wheeling; a sister, Leona Wilkinson of Wheeling; several nieces and nephews.
Friends
received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Kepner Funeral Home, National Road at
Bethany Pike, Wheeling, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with
the Rev. J. Robert Blankenship officiating.
Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.
