Paul C. Brubach

Paul C. Brubach, 82, of Miltonsburg Calais Rd., Woodsfield, died June 9, 1999 at the Monroe County Care Center in Woodsfield. He was born May 31, 1917 in Monroe County, a son of the late William and Rosa Burkhart Brubach.

He was a retired farmer and a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Miltonsburg.

Surviving are a brother, Albert Brubach, of Bridgeport, several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Benjamin and Lawrence Brubach; three sisters, Marie O'Connel, Clara Hall and Lillie Calvert.

Friends were received at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, June 10, Funeral Liturgy with Mass was celebrated June 11 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Miltonsburg, with Monsignor Thomas Petronek officiating. Burial followed in the St. John the Baptist Church Cemetery. Vigil Services were held June 10 at the funeral home.

 

Edith A. Radon, nee Faber

Edith A. Faber Radon, 93, Monroe Manor, Woodsfield, died Nov. 16, 1999 at the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Monroe County, Sept. 29, 1906, a daughter of Amiel Faber and Mary Matz Faber.

She was a retired Monroe County school nurse, a Monroe County health nurse, a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ at Woodsfield, Eastern Star Lodge and the Rebekah Lodge of Lewisville.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert R. and Nancy Radon, of Lewisville and Richard G. "Butch" and Jane Radon, of Scottsboro, Ala.; four grandchildren, Robert R. Radon II, William R. Radon, Taren Dawson, Stacey Radon; three great-grandchildren, Kyle R. Radon, Andrew C. Radon, Paige E. Radon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Radon, Dec. 1979; three brothers, Paul, Clyde and an infant brother, Harold Faber; two sisters, Lucille Reischman and Martha Fals.

Friends were received Nov. 18 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services were held Nov. 19, with the Revs. Richard Wilson and Donald Rock officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

William Frederick Bartenschlag

The Monroe County Beacon dated October 28, 1999

William F. Bartenschlag, 71, of Lewisville, died Oct. 19, 1999 at Riverside Hospital, Columbus. He was born in Lewisville July 11, 1928, a son of the late Walter and Amelia Steed Bartenschlag.

He was a Lewisville High School graduate. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, with duty in the Middle East. He was a retired employee of Consolidated Aluminum Corporation, Hannibal; a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville, where he was a former council member, member of the Monroe County Republican Central Committee, a former Lewisville Village Councilman; and a 43 year member of the American Legion Post 87 of Woodsfield.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Wilda Heft Bartenschlag, of Lewisville; a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Pat (Crystal) Willis, Pleasant City; two sons and daughter-in-law, John and Kim Bartenschlag, of Parkersburg and Don and Aimee Bartenschlag, of Zanesville; three brothers, Ellis Bartenschlag, of Lewisville, Robert Bartenschlag, and wife Pat, of Berea, Kentucky, Jack Bartenschlag and wife, Jane of Columbus; six grandchildren, Mary Sweeney, Mike Bartenschlag, Matt Bartenschlag, all of Parkersburg, Christopher Willis of Pleasant City, Amelia Bartenschlag and April LBartenschlag, both of Zanesville.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Clayton Bartenschlag and one infant sister Melba Bartenschlag.

Services were held Oct. 23 at Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville, the Rev William Worchester III officiating. Interment was in Friendship Cemetery, Lewisville. Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, was in charge of arrangements.

Phillip Coates Kindelberger

Phillip Coats Kindelberger, 52, of 113 Maple Ave., Woodsfield, died Sept. 14, 1999, in Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire. He was born July 26, 1947 in Canton, a son of the late Glenn Kindelberger and Marian E. Coates Kindelberger.

He was a school teacher and a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ.

Surviving are his uncle, William, Coates, of Navarre; several cousins.

There was no visitation. Interment was held at the convenience of the family.

Martha J. Yoho, nee Reeves 1900 - 1999

WOODSFIELD [,OH] - Martha J. Yoho, 99, of the Monroe County Care Center, formerly of 209 Oaklawn Ave., Woodsfield, died Monday (Aug. 30, 1999) at the care center. She was born in Belmont County on Jan. 15, 1900, a daughter of the late William S. and Sarah E. Gibbons Reeves.

She was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Woodsfield. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Yoho, on April 30, 1966; a daughter, Geraldine Harmon in August 1996; four sisters; and three brothers.

She leaves four sons, Bobby (Ruth) Yoho, Billy (Shirley) Yoho, Richard (Marsha) Yoho, all of Woodsfield, and Jackie Yoho of Newton Falls; a daughter, La Donna (Clarence "Butch") Huntsman of Woodsfield; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Bauer - Turner Funeral Home. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Free Methodist Church, State Route 78, Woodsfield.

Burial will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Woodsfield.

 

Winland, Grethel L. Winland, nee Ullman

Grethel L. Winland, 87, of 110 East Church St., Woodsfield, died June 101999, at the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield. She was born in Graysville, Dec 30, 1911, a daughter of the late Charles Ullman and Irene McFadden Ullman.

She was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ, the Senior Citizens Center, and the Buckeye Hills Area Agency for Aging.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Lester and Toni Gray, of Barberton; two grandsons and wives, Raymond and Barb Gray, of Canal Fulton, Wylie and Pam Gray, of Wadsworth; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Kaye and Phillip Michael.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Winland.

Friends were received until time of service on June 22 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, with Harold Kinney officiating. Interment was in the Creighton Ridge Cemetery, near Sycamore Vallely.

Vernon Elwood Charles Riech

Vernon E. C. Reich, 83, 32975 TH 70, Lewisville, died June 19, 1999, at the Barnesville Hospital. He was born near Miltonsburg, June 17, 1916, a son of the late Edward and Bertha Claus Reich.

He was a 1934 graduate of Woodsfield High School, Woodsfield, was a former employee of the former A&P Store in Woodsfield, owner/operator of the former Jerusalem Store, Jerusalem, form 1944 - 1954, former owner/operator of the former Reich's Meat Market, Barnesville from 1957 - 1987, former salesman for DeKalb Seed Co. and a retired farmer. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, near Lewisville, where he served on the church council and was a member of the Men's Brotherhood. He was a member and past president of the Barnesville Kiwanis Club and a member of the Miltonsburg Cemetery Association.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Gladis R. Christman Reich, whom he married on Sept. 4, 1938; three daughters, Mrs. Forrest (Janet) Frank, of Woodsfield, Mrs. Dale (Sandra) Yonyz, of Woodsfield, Mrs. Ed (Roselyn) Frank, of Lewisville; two sons, Larry Reich and his wife, Glenda of Woodsfield, Vernon E.C. II and his wife, Myra, of Lowell; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In Addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Reich.

Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, June 22, then received from 10 a.m. unti time of services at 11 a.m. on June 23 at Trinity United Church of Christ, near Lewisville, with the Rev. William L Worcester III officating. Burial will follow in Miltonsburg Cemetery, Miltonsburg.

Bertha M. Dillon

Bertha M. Hall Dillon, 90, 52075 Church St., Jerusalem, died June 8, 1999 at the home of her daughter. She was born April 10, 1909 in Quaker City, the daughter of the late Elmer and Mary Hartley Hall.

She was a member of the Jerusalem United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Donnie, of Jerusalem; two daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Betty) Ward, of Beallsville, Mrs. Jacob (Mary Kay) Haffner, of Beallsville, with whom she resided; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Dillon; four brothers, Arthur, Carl, Chester and Homer Hall; a sister Golda B. Hall; two great grandsons.

Friends were received at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville, June 10, where services were held June 11, with Pastor Gale Lauderman officiating. Burial followed in Jerusalem Cemetery, Jerusalem.

 

Grace Marie Fletcher, nee Dillon

Grace Dillon Fletcher, 80, of Mannington, [WV] died May 30, 1999, at Fairmont General Hospital. She was born June 20, 1918, at Graysville, the daughter of the late Douglas and Addie Catherine Hodge Dillon.

She was a member of Mannington Church of Christ for 47 years. She enjoyed quilting and cooking. She was a graduate of Wheeling Beauty Academy.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Paul (Elaine) Lambert, of Mannington; two grandchildren, Christopher Lambert and wife, Rachael, of League City, Texas, Abigail Lambert, of Northampton, Mass.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Mrs. Mac (Jeanne) Spengler, of Mannington, Nellie Schumacher, of Woodsfield and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William Fletcher, on April 3, 1998; three brothers, Ralph, Romney and Bob Dillon; a sister, Garnet Miller.

Friends wee received June 1 at the Masters Funeral Home, in Mannington, where services were held June 2, with the evangelist Michael P. Reese Officiating. Burial followed at Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery.

 

Wilbur F. Weber

Wilbur F. Weber 84, of 34250 SR 78, Lewisville, died March 12, 1999, in the Genesis Good Samaritan Medical Center, Zanesville. He was born on Nov. 24, 1914, at Lewisville, a son of the late John H. and Gennie Wheeler Weber.

He was a retired employee of the Ormet Corporation, Hannibal and a faithful member of the Lewisville Limited Methodist Church, Lewisville.

Surviving are his wife, of 61 years, Grethel Hupp Weber, whom he married on Aug. 18, 1937; four daughters, Suzon Weber of Graysville, Barbara Weber, of Senecaville, Mrs. Brian (Deborah) McCort, of Malaga, Mrs. Gary (Vickie) Dillon, of Lewisville; a son, Jerry Weber and his wife, Claudia, of Minerva; four brothers, Roy Weber, of Phoenix, Arizona, Lloyd Weber of New Matamoras, Dennis Weber, of Lewisville, Francis Weber, of Vienna, W.VA.; five sisters, Melba Tuel, of Tallmadge, Vera VanMeter, of Kent, Eleanor Farkas, of Massillon, Deloris Strickling, of Washington Courthouse, Ellen Cline of Lewisville; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Anderson and a brother Eugene Weber.

Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, March 14, where funeral services were held March 15, with Rev. Richard Wilson officiating. Burial followed in the Friendship Cemetery, Lewisville.

F. Mabel Earley, nee Mobberly

Earley, F. Mabel Mobberly, 85, of 6416 East Ellis, Messa, Ariz., formerly of Monroe County and Wheeling, died Monday Oct. 4, 1999, in the Mesa Lutheran Hospital. She was a retired secretary in Wheeling, and a member of the Church of Christ, Wheeling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman W. Earley in 1984; a son, Gerald W. Earley in 1969; her parents, Forrest and Annette Whitacre Mobberly; a sister. Surviving are a son, Gene, of Mesa, Ariz.; ex-daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Hummel Earley of Lady Lake, Fla.; three grandchildren, Tracy Lyn Kent, Jeffrey Wayne Earley, Paige Ashle Earley; three great-grandchildren, William Ray Kent III, Zachariah Nicolas Earley, Jacob Roberto Earley. Friends received 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Watter Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Interment in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Graysville.

 

Wesley Theodore Weber

Wesley T. Weber, 90, of 28968 SR 78, Lewisville, died Aug. 24, 1999, at the Harmar Place Rehabilitation and Extended Care, Marietta. He was born near Lewisville, on Feb. 23, 1909, a son of the late William and Gertrude Claus Weber.

He was a former employee of the Timken Roller Bearing Co. in Canton, a former school bus driver, a former Summit Township Trustee in Monroe County and a retired farmer. He was also a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, near Lewisville, and a member of the Farm Bureau.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Lee Pennell Carpenter Weber, whom he married on Sept. 13, 1969; three daughters, Mrs. Norman (Darlene) Mercer, of Marietta, Ruth Ann Rader of Zanesville, Mrs. Gary (Wanda) Seagraves of Springfield; two sons, Vernon Weber and wife, Louise of Huntsville, Richard Weber and wife, Mary Jo, Cambridge; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Lester (Anna Lee) Piatt of Whipple, Mrs. Doug (Ruth) Earley, Marietta; two step-sons, Byron Carpenter and wife, Jo Ann of Venice, Fla., Wallace Carpenter and wife, Judy of Lewisville; two sisters, Marcella Weber and Margaret Weber, both of Lewisville; a brother, William Weber, Brooksville, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; 14 step-grandchildren; 20 step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma Hoff Weber, on July 4, 1968; a son, Robert Weber; two brothers Alfred Weber and George Weber; a sister, Emma Lent; a step-grandchild.

Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Aug. 26, where funeral services were held Aug. 27, with Rev. Richard Wilson and Rev. William Worcester III, officiating. Burial followed in the Middle Church Cemetery, near Lewisville.

Edward Jacob Uppole

    Edward Jacob Uppole, 76, of Skin Creek Road, Lewisville, Ohio, died January 31, 1999, at the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Monroe County, Ohio, August 30, 1922, a son of the late Thomas and Mabel Goodhart Uppole.
    He was a coal truck and school bus driver and employed as a parts man and mechanic for Lashley s Tractor Sales. He was also a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ, Woodsfield, Ohio.
    Surviving are his wife, Martha Kahrig  Uppole, of Lewisville; a daughter, Mrs. Ben (Karen) Ackerman, of Lewisville; a son, Dennis Uppole, of Lewisville; a sister, Mrs. Linza  (Viola) Stephens, of Calais, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Uppole; a sister, Emma Wheeler; an infant sister, Florence.
    Graveside services and interment will be held February 3 at 1 p.m. at the Friendship cemetery, Lewisville, with Minister Harry Summers officiating.

Florence C. Schumacher, nee Kress

    Florence C. Schumacher, 79, of 105 Gibson St., Woodsfield, died March 18, 1999, at her home. She was born at Miltonsburg, May 13, 1919, a daughter of the late Fredrick and Margaret Bosold Kress.
    She was a former seamstress at L. G. A. M. Manufacturing in Woodsfield. She was a member of the St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, where she was a member of the Catholic Women s Club, the Purgatorial Society, and the St. Francis Society. She had also been a former 4-H advisor in Monroe County for 30 years and was a 25 year member of the Farm Bureau.
    Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. James (Adeline) Vallandingham of Port Tobacco, Maryland, Mrs. Glen Butch (Alice) Goddard of Beallsville, Ohio, Mrs. John (Vera) Roth of Woodsfield, Mrs. Robert (Anria) Hupp of Caldwell, Mrs. Ralph E. (Bernice) Baker of Woodsfield; two sisters, Edith Reischman of Miltonsburg, Ohio, Alice Buckalew of Woodsfield, a brother, George Kress of Lewisville, Ohio; 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
    In Addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard H. Schumacher, on November 7, 1991; a sister, Marie Cornett; three brothers, Karl Kress, Gilbert Kress and Oscar Kress.
    Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, March 20 and 21. Funeral Liturgy with Mass was celebrated March 22 at St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, with Monsignor Thomas Petronek as the celebrant. Burial followed in the St. Sylvester Catholic Cemetery, Woodsfield.
    Vigil services were held March 21 at the funeral home.

Mildred F. Christman, nee Landefeld

    Mildred Freda Christman, 83, of Walter Ridge Road, Woodsfield, died March 27, 1999, at the home of her daughter, Rhonda Piatt, of Woodsfield. She was born in Monroe County, Ohio, May 30, 1915, a daughter of the late Herman and
Freda Reich Landefeld.
    She was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville, Ohio.
    Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law; Rhonda and Tom Piatt, Woodsfield; two brothers, Lester Landefeld and Harold Landefeld, both of Woodsfield; two grandsons, Kyle and Korey Piatt.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Christman, March 1981; a brother, Walter Landefeld; a sister, Marie Riser and two infant sisters.
    Friends were received March 29 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services were held March 30, with the Reverend Marcia Werntz officiating. Interment in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

George W. Brooks

    George W. Brooks, 59, of Twinsburg, died March 25,1999, in Sun City, Arizona. He was born June 14, 1939, in Woodsfield, Ohio, a son of Marie Brooks and the late Hugh Brooks.
    He retired from Walnut Hills Ford Motor Company and moved to Arizona in August 1998 to pursue his passion for golf, seven days a week.
    He was also known as "Pop Bottle" of the Golden Mike Club to many of his CB friends.
    In addition to his mother, surviving are his love, Sheryl Brooks; two daughters, Debora Pugh and Gloria Brooks, both of Marengo, Ohio; five grandchildren, Justin, Nick, Brandy, Joey, and Jenny; three brothers, Phillip of Dayton, Fred of Mantua and Ken of Hiram; two sisters, Kathy Shanholtzer of Aurora and Virginia Putt of Ravenna. 
    In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Rosetta Frelinio.
    There were no services but to be remembered on the 14th hole, his favorite, of Riverview Golf Course in Sun City.  Burial in Paradise Memorial.
 
Francis J. Heft

    Francis J. Heft, 87, 45554 Ohio 145, Lewisville, Ohio, died ay 14, 1999 at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was born at Lewisville on October 11, 1911, a son of the late Lewis and Minnie Christman Heft.
    He was a graduate of Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, was a retired school teacher having taught in various schools throughout Monroe County, Ohio for more than 30 years; was a former member of the Ohio House of Representatives
serving Monroe County for eight terms. He was a member of St. Paul s United Church of Christ, Woodsfield and was a former Sunday School Superintendent at the former St. Peter s United Church of Christ in Lewisville. He was also a very active member of the Ohio Republican Party.
    Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Vivian Harper Heft, whom he married on February 5, 1938; three daughters, Mrs. William (Ruth) Bartilson of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Kenneth(Nina) Grigsby,  of Canyon Lake, Texas, Mrs. Neil (Marjorie) Frankl of Park Hills, Kentucky; two sons, David Heft and his wife, Janet of Kailu-Kona, Hawaii, Eric Heft and his wife, Nicki of Des Moines, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Catherine Heft of Englewood; a  sister, Mrs. Clarence (Melba) Reich of Jerusalem, Ohio; three brothers, William Heft and his wife, b of Clearwater, Florida, Stanley Heft and his wife, of Aurora; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille Harper Heft, in 1937; a daughter, Joan Heft, in 1937; a son, Karl Heft on  April 14, 1999; a sister, Bessie Sutherland; two brothers, Theodore and Paul Heft.
    Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on May 19. Friends then received at St. Paul s United Church of Christ, Woodsfield, from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m., May 20 with Pastor Donald Rock officiating. Burial will follow in the Friendship Cemetery, Lewisville.

    Audrey Luzelle Highman Gatten Shafer, 90, of Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Woodsfield, formerly of Route 2, Lewisville, died May 16, 1999 at Barnesville Hospital. She was born March 14, 1909 at Sarahsville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Charles Highman and Pearl Nalley Highman.

    She was a member of the Richfork Church of Christ. She lived her life based on the concept of the Golden Rule. Her family can attest to her love, patience and self-sacrifice. She will be remembered by her friends and neighbors for her hospitality, friendliness and generosity.

Virginia K. Groves, nee Matthews

    Virginia K. Groves, 78, 50810 State Route 145, Malaga, Ohio, died May 24, 1999 at her home. She was born December 6, 1920, in Malaga, a daughter of the late Nelson and Olga Wilcox Matthews.
    She was a member of the Somerton United Methodist Church, Somerton, Ohio, the Acorn Twig of Barnesville Hospital, Barnesville, Ohio, was a 4-H advisor for many years as well as a volunteer at Barnesville Hospital for over 25 years.
    Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Carl Groves; two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Nancy Groves, of Cleveland, Ohio, Gary and Donna Groves, of Washington, D. C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Don (Janet) Crissinger, of Mulberry, Florida and Mrs. Gary (Ann) Bilyeu, of Malaga, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson.
    Friends were received May 27 at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville, Ohio, where services were held May 28, with the Pastor Dale Epple officiating. Interment followed in Somerton Southern Cemetery.

    Blanche Stimpert, 95, Heath Nursing and Convalescent Center, Heath, Ohio, formerly of Lewisville, Ohio, died October 15, 1999, at the center. She was born at Lewisville, May 28, 1904, a daughter of the late William E. and Elsie Gardner Denbow.
    She was a homemaker and a member of the Woodsfield Church of Nazarene, Woodsfield.
    Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Earl (Helen) Weber, of Newark, Ohio; two sons, Vernon Stimpert and his wife, Norma, of Zanesville, Sam Stimpert and his wife, Barbara, of Howard; a brother, Floyd Denbow, of Lewisville; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Stimpert on November  7, 1977; a son, Robert Stimpert; a daughter, Mildred Highman; two brothers, Lawrence and Clayton Denbow.
    Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, October 18, where services were held October 19, with the Reverend Steve Cummings and the Reverend William Graham officiating. Burial followed in Friendship Cemetery, Lewisville

Miriam Cline Saffle, nee Kilburn

    Miriam Kilburn Cline Saffle, 73, 226 Eastern Avenue, Woodsfield, died November 1, 1999 at Mecklenberg Health Care Center, Charlotte, North Carolina. She was born in Monroe County, Ohio, May 15, 1926, a daughter of the late Charles and Anna Bintz Kilburn.
    Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Stacy and Leissa Cline, of Akron, Ohio; a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Jim (Linda) Novak, of Charlotte; a sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. David (Mildred) Touvelle, of Barnesville, Ohio; a grand-daughter and her husband, Mrs. Jeff (Kattie) Spies, of Charlotte, North Carolina.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Frederic E. Cline, February 10, 1979; her second husband, John Saffle, December 20, 1990.
    Friends were received November 5 at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, until time of service, with the Reverend Donald Rock officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield. 

Bernard L. Jones

    Bernard L. Jones, 72, of Brunswick, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at Holy Family Home in Parma, after a courageous battle with cancer.
    He was born in Jerusalem, Ohio, and was a Medina County resident for 28 years, formerly residing in Parma and Cleveland. Mr. Jones was a 1945 graduate of Medina High School, where he was class president. He was a member
of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Brunswick, where he and his wife were very active in the Church parish. Among his many hobbies, he was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman, enjoying sailing, nature, gardening, cross country skiing, and the pilot of his own plane. He also enjoyed motorcycling and was a member of the American Motorcycle Association and the Gold Ring Rider Association, where he was invited to serve on the drill team. Mr. Jones served the Boy Scouts of America as cub master, merit badge counselor and Frontier District chairman in Cuyahoga County. Bernard made many woodworking projects which he loved to share with others.
    He was employed as a detective for the Cleveland Police Department for 28 years, where he served in the chief's office of special investigation. After retiring from the force, he was a security guard for Strongsville Middle School. He then worked for Cleveland State University as superintendent of buildings for 11 years.
    Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enlisted in January 1945 and was discharged in 1946. He then served four years in the Naval Reserve.
    He is survived by his wife Natalie (Sonja) Jones, to whom he would have been married 50 years in 2000; sons, Curtis L. (Jill) Jones and Thomas A. (Sylvia) Jones, both of Texas; grandsons, Matthew L. Jones, William A. Jones and Eric A. Jones; and sister, Dorothea (Gilbert) Schaefer of Texas.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, William A. and Grace Jones; and five brothers and sisters.
    Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 929 Pearl Road, Brunswick. Father Robert Hilkert will officiate. Burial: Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
    Visiting hours: 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, 765 N. Court St.

Walter J. Ackerman

    Walter J. Ackerman, 79, of 33133 Skin Creek Road, Lewisville, Ohio, died November 5, 1999, at his home. He was born near Lewisville on February 6, 1920.
    He was a very active dairy farmer for many years and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Miltonsburg, Ohio, where he had served on the parish council for many years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society and a 35 year member of the A. S. C. S.

    Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Alberta Mae Stephen Ackerman, whom he married November 9, 1946; three brothers, George B. Ackerman, of Parkersburg, West Virginia,  Edward H. Ackerman, of Lewisville, Lester C. Ackerman, of
Woodsfield; a sister, Leota Christman Buss, of Apple Creek; several nieces and nephews.
    Friends were received at Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, November 8. Funeral liturgy with Mass was celebrated November 9 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Miltonsburg, with Monsignor Thomas C. Petronek as celebrant.
Burial followed in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Miltonsburg.

John L. Shafer

    John L. Shafer, 95, of Richfork Road, Lewisville, Ohio, and formerly of Ashland and Richland County, Ohio, passed away November 6, 1999, at Kingston of Ashland Nursing Home, after a long illness. He was born September 25, 1904 in Woodsfield, a son of the late Stephen and Bertha Sheckles Shafer.
    He had retired from the Civil Service and was a member of the Richfork Church of Christ.
    Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John L. and Sondra Shafer, of Mansfield, Ohio; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Ted (Doris) McFadden, of Ashland, Mrs. Jack (Helen) Rosenbluh, of Mansfield, Mrs. Kenneth (Dorothy) Smith, of Ashland; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; numerous step-children, step-grandchildren,
step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Katherine Tagmyer, whom he married on May 20, 1929, died in 1964; his second wife Opal Shaw, died in 1973; his third wife, Audrey Highman Gatten married April 20, 1974, died May 16, 1999; and a daughter, Evelyn Shafer.
    Friends were received November 9 an hour prior to the service at Heyl Funeral Home, Ashland, with Travis Irwin officiating. Burial in Ashland Cemetery. 

Mabel A. Ramser, nee Boltz

    Mabel Adele Ramser, 92, Highland Avenue, Shadyside, died November 13, 1999, at the Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire. She was born January 4, 1907, at Boltz Ridge, near Clarington, Ohio, a daughter of the late Everett and Josie Roth Boltz.
    She was a retired employee of the former Sterling Products of Wheeling, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Shadyside, and Shadyside Garden Club.
    Surviving are her husband, Russell E. Ramser; three sons, Robert A., of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, John, of Allison Park, Pennsylvania, Bill, of Sherrard, West Virginia; a daughter, Mrs. Dean (Mary Ann) Torges, of Ostrander, Ohio; a brother, Clay Boltz of Clarington; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Russell E. Ramser, Jr. and Dr. Richard J. Ramser; a brother, Lester Boltz; a sister, Gladys Boltz.

Charles L. Bonam
Wooster---Charles L. Bonam, 79, 2642 Monterey St. died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at his home. Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at McIntyre, Davis & Greene Funeral Home in Wooster. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.

He was born Dec. 13, 1919 in Antioch to Henry and Caroline (Nalley) Bonam and married Elsie Selvy on May 5, 1962. She survives. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was employed at the Bauer Ladder Co. for 27 years. He was also a custodian at Franklin elementary school for 10 years. He had played music in many country bands through the years and had played music for residents in many nursing homes.

Surviving in addition to his wife are children and their spouses, Gary L and Barbara Bonam of Akron, Richard C. and Donna Bonam of Columbia, S.C., and Debra and Dale Badertscher of Wooster; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Sisters, Mary Cline and Grace Hooper and brothers, Donald and Clarence Bonam, died previously.

 

Rosetta V. Jones Kinney nee Jones

Rosetta V. Jones Kinney, 62, of 39444 s.r. 26, Woodsfield, died January 6,1999 at her home. She was born at Woodsfield on July 26, 1936, a daughter of Freda (McCammon) Jones and the late William E. (Ed) Jones.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Graysville Church of Christ at Graysville.

In addition to her mother, surviving are her husband, Vernon I. Kinney whom she married on April 7, 1962; two sons, Merle Huntsman and his wife Terri of Graysville; Vince Kinney of the home; a daughter Mrs. John (Sherry) Stout of Belpre; five brothers, James Jones of Jerusalem, John Jones , Richard Jones, Jerry Jones, all of Woodsfield., Joe Jones of Strasburg; three sisters; Mrs. Bud (Linda) smith, Mrs. Marvin (Lois) Kirkbride, both of Woodsfield, Mrs. William (Kathy) Kahrig of Lewisville; three half-brothers; Charles Jones of Zanesville, Bernard Jones of Woodsfield, Robert Jones of Cameron; six grandchildren ; Ryan Huntsman, Clinton Ullman, Spenser Rafferty, Alicia Pullman, Lindsey Huntsman, and Megan Schumacher.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two half-brothers, Glen Jones and Paul Griffin.

Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield Jan.8, where funeral services were held Jan. 9 with evangelist Claude Davis officiating. Burial followed in the Graysville Church of Christ Cemetery, Graysville.

Charles W. Drake

Charles W. Drake, 85, of Barnesville, died Sat. Nov. 20, 1999 at Barnesville Health Care Center. He was born Aug. 19, 1914 in Tacoma, the son of William Garfield and Jennie Bird Drake.

He was a retired farmer, a US Army veteran and a member of the Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Edgar Drake; four brothers, George, Raymond, Thurman, and an infant brother, Richard Drake; two sisters, Mary Hittle and Florence Little; one great-granddaughter, Amy Nicole Drake.

Surviving are two sons, Dan of Deltona,FL, and Charles Richard of Barnesville; two daughters, Shirley Gray of Canton and Karen Eddy of Barnesville; two brothers, Carl Drake of FL, and Bill Drake of Fairmont, WV; three sisters, Kathryn Eckleberry of Ravenna, Betty Eckleberry of Streetsboro, Myrtle Huntsman of Barnesville and Lilly Huntsman of Columbus; a half sister, Margaret Huntsman of CA; 4 grandchildren.

Friends will be received today, Tuesday, nov 23 from 6 to 9 at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, 319 N. Chestnut St. Barnesville, with services being held Wed Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gene Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Batesville Cemetery, Batesville.

 

Shirley Ellen Kurtz nee Morris

Shirley Ellen Kurtz, 81, 318  1/2 Wiley Ave., Barnesville, died Fri., April 16, 1999 at Woodsfield Health And Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 30, 1918 in Monroe County, the daughter of the late Willard and Viola Taylor Morris. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Kurtz; one daughter Mary Kurtz; four brothers, Oscar, James A. Otto, and Elijah Morris.

Surviving are four sons, Donald Kurtz of Barnesville; Jim Kurtz of Naples, Fla., William Kurtz of Newark and John Kurtz of Somerton; five daughters, Minnie Saffell of Armstrong Mills, Helen Nelms of Duffy, Linda Wickes of Hannibal, Marjorie Fassler of Somerton and Phyllis Dingus of Barnesville; three brothers, Spencer Morris of N. Canton, David Morris of Newark; two sisters Hazel Williston and Maggie Kurtz both of Newark; 28 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Monday at Campbell-Plumly- Millburn funeral home, 319 N. Chestnut St. Barnesville, with Rev. Roy Steel officiating. Burial followed in Somerton Cemetery, Somerton.

 

Genevieve Cizman - nee Hackathorn

Genevieve Hackathorn, daughter of James and Margaret Mercer Hackathorn, was born in Bergholz, Ohio January 30, 1927. She died January 21, 1999 Trinity West in Steubenville, Ohio after a long illness (cancer). She was a retired cook from the John Gregg School, Bergholz, Ohio after 18 years of service. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Bergholz and a member of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. She is survived by her husband Charles Cizman whom she married June 11, 1950; her mother Margaret Hackathorn of Bergholz; a daughter and son-in-law Jenny Kay and Dan Wilks of Hudson, Ohio; two grandchildren, Christina and Ryan Wilks.

 

Leona Jackie Lorraine Yansoik nee Leach

QUAKER CITY----Leona "Jackie" Lorraine Yansoik, 69, of Quaker City, died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1999) at her home.

She was born March 19, 1930 at Salesville, daughter of Sylvia Carpenter Leach Foraker of Quaker City and the late William Leach.

Mrs. Yansoik worked for 29 years as a supervisor at Cambridge State Hospital. She was a member of the Central Christian Church of Quaker City and a 1948 graduate of Quaker City High School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Yansoik in October 1995. Also deceased are a son Everett C. "Peep" Wehr and a brother Bill Leach.

Mrs. Yansoik leaves a son, Kevin (Laura) Wehr of Quaker City; a daughter, LouAnn Leach of Quaker City; two brothers, Robert (Lequitta) of Dell City, Okla., and Jim (Rachel) Leach of Cambridge; a sister Mrs. Leola (Dick) Gisesy of Quaker City; five grandchildren, Kalib, Shana, Timothy, Rachel and Jennifer.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Friday at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Quaker City, where services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Quaker City.

 

Ellis Earl Hogue

Ellis Earl Hogue 86, of 36920 St. Rt. 78, Woodsfield, died Friday, June 18, 1999, in Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was a retired oil and water well driller, and a former employee of Conalco Corp. He was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Tobitha Edington Hogue; three brothers, Hildreth, Clifford and Walter; four sisters; Bernice, Goldie, Gaylia Hogue and Edna McElfresh. Surviving are his wife, Marjorie M. Nalley Hogue; a son, Gailord of Woodsfield; two daughters, Bonnie Rothenbuhler of Beallsville and Sharon Weber of Woodsfield; a sister. Mildred McCammon of Woodsfield; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Friends received 3:30 to 9:00 p.m. Monday at Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield where services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday. Interment in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

 

Gladys B. Herlan nee Turner

BYESVILLE-----Gladys B. Herlan, a longtime resident of Byesville, currently of Appletree Homes in Beverly, passed away at the Heartland in Marietta.

She was born in New Straitsville, a daughter of the late John Wesley and Gertrude Mae Burgess Turner.

Mrs. Herlan was a former employee of the former Central National Bank, Byesville and The Style Center in Cambridge for 20 years. She was a member of the Main Avenue Methodist Church, Byesville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Herlan, former owner of Herlan Funeral Home, Byesville, who died in 1949; a daughter, Louise Herlan.

She leaves a daughter, Carol Leeper of Beverly; a sister, Margaret Chastain of Canton; a grandson, Frank Leeper of Cross Lanes, WVA.; two granddaughters, Ann Leeper of Waterford and Mrs. Kevin (Julie) Lewis of Ravenna; and a great-grandson Chistopher Robert Drake of Waterford.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Black Family Funeral Service, Byesville, where services will be 11 A.M. Monday with the Revs. Patrica Reiter and Carl Orphanidens officiating.

Mildred Irene Pittman nee Henthorn

Mildred Irene Pittman, 79, 49780 Headley Ridge Road, Barnesville, died Sunday, April 4, 1999, in Wheeling Hospital. She was born June 24, 1919, in Adams Township, Monroe County, a daughter of the late Everett Charles and Susie Stewart Henthorn.

     She was a member of the Zion Church of Christ, Beallsville.

     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Ellsworth Pittman; a grandson, Roy J. "RJ" Ady; two brothers, Lawrence Cecil and Everett Okey Henthorn.

     Surviving are nine sons, Everett of Bowling Green, Ky., Roy Jr. of Oakland, Ky, Guy and Duane, both of Beallsville, James of Woodsfield, Roger and Bill, both of Sardis, Carl of Burbank, Ohio, Sam of Moundsville;  five daughters, Hazel Blackstone of Wadsworth, Hilda Blackstone of Lewisville, Helen Palmer, Corilda Knowlton and Barb Ady, all of Beallsville; two brothers, Charles Henthorn of Akron and Clarence of Wadsworth; a sister, Wanda Blackstone of Lewisville; 45 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren.

     Services will be held today, April 7,at 1 p.m. at the Harper Funeral Home, 52728 Ohio Ave., Beallseville, with Wayne Clark officiating. Burial follows in East Sunsbury Cemetery, Beallsville.

 

Conda Ree Carpenter

QUAKER CITY---Conda Ree Carpenter, 47, of Quaker City, died Tuesday (May 11, 1999) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pa., following a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 19, 1951, in Cambridge, son of Herbert and Esther Mallett Carpenter of Quaker City.

Mr. Carpenter was employed as a mine worker for 27 years with Ohio Valley Coal No. 6, Aladonia, and was a Wayne Township trustee. He attended the Calais Community Church. He was a member of United Mine Workers, Masonic Lodge 500, Quaker City and the Mine Safety Rescue Team. He was a 1969 graduate of Shenandoah High School and attended Rio Grande College where he played baseball.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alva and Mary Carpenter and Paul and Tillie Mallett.

In addition to his parents he leaves his wife, Lorrie Steed Carpenter, whom he married Dec. 23, 1998; two sons, Shawn Carpenter and Jeremy Steed, both of the home; a daughter, Konna Carpenter of Columbus; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends may call 4 to 9 P.M. Friday at the Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Quaker City. Services will be 1 P.M. Saturday at Calais Community Church with the Rev. Cecil Betts and the Rev. Don Arbuckle officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Quaker City.

 

Robert Lee Truax

Robert L. Truax, 59, 503 South Fourth Street Woodsfield, died July 6, 1999 at Wheeling Hospital. He was born in Monroe County, September 21, 1939, a son of the late Cletis Truax and Mary Bonham Truax.

He was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ, former employee of North American Coal Company,Powhatan#4 mine, and a navy veteran.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Henry Yeager Jr.; her parents, Willard Hudson Lendon and Grace Wheeler Lendon Passmore; a brother, Wilbur Hudson Lendon.

     Brad Lee Henthorn, 26, Heidelburd, Lancaster, formerly of Bellaire,
died Thursday, June 3, 1999 at Lancaster.
     He was an employee of the Rose Chemical Company in Lancaster and a
Methodist.
     He was preceded in death by his father, Terry Lee Henthorn; paternal
grandfather, H.J. Henthorn.
     Surviving are his mother, Connie Johnston Henthorn; a daughter, Brea
Henthorn of Junction City; maternal grandparents, Francis "Butch" Johnston
of Bellaire, Dale and Peggy Richmond of Bellaire; paternal grandmother,
Margaret Henthorn of Bellaire.
     There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend memorial
services at 2 p.m. today at the Bauknecht Funeral Home, Bellaire, with the

Richard B. Buchholzer Jr.

Rick Buchholzer, 45, died unexpectedly Jan. 13, 1999.

Born in Akron, he was a parishioner of St. Sebastian Catholic Church. Rick was a student at Avon Old Farm School in Avon, Conn., and a graduate of Firestone High School Class of 1972. He attended the University of Akron and Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.

He was president of Voxcom Recording Studio and obtained his first-class FCC Broadcast Engineer License at KTWU in Topeka, Kan., and later worked at TV and radio stations in Amarillo, Texas, Louisville, Ky., and Cambridge, OH, before returning to Akron and becoming a founding partner in Engineering Broadcast Systems.

In addition to his business, Rick was an accomplished guitarist, teacher, inventor, community volunteer, and engineering consultant.

Rick is survived by father, Richard B. Buchholzer; stepmother, Frances Seiberling Buchholzer; stepsister, Elizabeth Sturtevant Eckhardt; uncle, Bruce H. Buchholzer; aunts, Eleanor Buchholzer Erickson and Edna J. Buchholzer; and many cousins and other relatives.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 474 Mull Ave. Procession will form at the church. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Ray A. Henthorn, 79, 3641 Central Ave., Shadyside, died Aug.,6, 1999, at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling. He was born Nov.30, 1919 in Cameron, a son of the late John and Alice Boughner Henthorn. He was a retired employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., Yorkville plant, attended Lincoln Avenue United Methodist Church, Shadyside, a member of Beallsville Masonic Lodge and an Army veteran of WWII.

Surviving are his wife, Margorie Conner Henthorn; a son, John, of Shadyside; two daughters, Ellen Brooks, of Washington Court House, Linda Messimer, of Salem; a brother, Paul Henthorn, of Woodsfield; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Wanda Lee Henthorn, Sarah Atkinson and Ada Mae Root.

          McBride , Donald A. , 53, of 48004 Forty and Eight Rd., Jerusalem, Ohio (formerly of Akron), died at 9:17 a.m. Monday, October 25, 1999, at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, W. Va.  He was born in Jackson, Tenn., on November 26, 1945, a son of William McBride, who survives, of Medina, and the late Christine Norville McBride.  He was a retired tire builder for General Tire in Akron, and had attended the Cottage Grove E.C. Church in Akron. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 2302 in Woodsfield, Ohio, and a board member of the GMN Tri County Boards.
          In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by sister, Sonja Heldman.

Surviving, in addition to his father, are his wife, Sharyn Rye McBride, whom he married July 27, 1968; daughter, Tammi McBride of the home; son, Donald J. McBride and his wife, Jane, of Jerusalem, Ohio; sisters, Mrs. Larry (Pat) Horning of South Carolina and Mrs. Jeff (Josephine) Matti of Seville, Ohio; brothers, Kenneth McBride and his wife, Reba, of Medina, and Jefferson McBride of Akron; grandchildren, Jeffrey McBride, Angela McBride, and Victoria McBride, all of Jerusalem, Ohio;

Went to be with the Lord, Saturday, February 27, 1999, at the Saginaw Geriatric Home. Age 87 years. The daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Latta) Turner was born August 15, 1911 in Woodsfield, Ohio. She married Ralph (Red) Walters in 1960. He passed away in 1990. Bess owned and operated a beauty salon for many years in Saginaw's south side. She loved to read, crochet and especially loved fishing up north with Red. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Joanne and Frank Rifenbark, Bad Axe; Dennis and Laura Allen, Ann Arbor; Lloyd Allen Jr., Saginaw; Betty and Leonard Cliff, Saginaw; a step-daughter, Toby and Gary Gaertner; Saginaw; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, a brother and sister, Roger Turner, Olney, Ill; Mary Again,* Circleville, Ohio; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two stepsons, Ron Walters and Ralph Walters, Jr. and by five sisters and two brothers, Katie Swisher, Billie Palmer, Robert Ward Turner, Bernice Starr, Howard Turner, Mable Riggenbaugh and Nellie Jones.

Funeral service will take place 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 1, 1999, at the W.L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Rd. Rev. Walter David will officiate with entombment in Oakwood Mausoleum. Friends may call at the Chapel from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday. WOODSFIELD -- Ralph E. Jones, 94, of 37054 Kinney Ridge Road died at 7:50 p.m. Monday (May 24, 1999) at the Monroe County Care Center in Woodsfield.

He was born Oct. 18, 1904, near Graysville to Sylvester and Lola Dougherty Jones. He was a retired member of Graysville United Methodist Church in Graysville; Monroe Lodge 189, Free and Accepted Masons at Woodsfield; and a 58-year member of Graysville Grange 2681 at Graysville.

He is survived by one sister, Blanche Alls of Akron; and several nieces and nephews including Greg Alls and his wife, Patty, and Karen Gebouer and her husband, Lothar, all of Akron.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Jones; his second wife, Nellie A. Turner Jones, on May 13, 1988; his parents; and one sister.

Services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at Watters Funeral Home in Woodsfield with Pastor Gary Fitzgerald officiating. Burial is in Oaklawn Cemetery in Woodsfield. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Masonic services are at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home followed by Grange services.

She was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville, the Women's Guild, a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Lewisville, and a member of the Eastern Star of Woodsfield.

Surviving are five daughters and four sons-in-law, Mrs. Vernon (Betty) Ischy, Lewisville, Iva Wise, Barnsville, Mrs. William (Eileen) Wise, Belmont, Mrs. Sheldon (Juineta) Blair, Tucson, Arizona, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Morris, Barnsville; a sister, Margaret Weber, Lewisville; a brother, William J. Wever, Brooksville, Florida; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest Hoff, 1971; second husband, Gilbert Weber, 1976; two grandsons; a son-in-law, Sam Wise; three brothers, Westley, Alfred and George Weber; a sister, Emma Lent.

Glenn Steele - WOODSFIELD Glenn Steele, 92, of Woodsfield, died Monday (Nov. 27, 2000) at Forrest Hill Retirement Community, St. Clairsville. He was born Sept. 15, 1908, in Woodsfield, son of the late George and Anna (Briggs) Steele.

Mr. Steele was a retired station chief for Texas Eastern Transmission Corp., Summerfield.

He was a member of Buchanan Presbyterian Church, Lewisville, where he served as elder, trustee and treasurer.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge 189, Woodsfield.

He was a lifelong resident of Monroe County.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Young Steele, who died in 1998; five brothers, Alfred I. Steele, C.B. Steele, Arthur Steele, G. Roy Steele and O. Russell Steele; and two sisters, Maude Steele and M. Audrey Steele Hamilton.

He leaves four daughters, Norma J. Eells of St. Clairsville, Mrs. Gary (Glenna Joy) Graham of Wooster, Mrs. John (Janet S.) Pember of Beaumont, Texas, and Mrs. Bernard (Rita S.) Braverman of Alpharetta, Ga.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Janet Rachel Frank, 60, of 50215 State Route 145, Woodsfield, Oh. (Miltonsburg Community), died at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2000 at her home. She was born at Lewisville, Oh. on September 1, 1939, a daughter of Gladys R. Christman Reich who survives of Lewisville, Oh. and the late Vernon Reich.

She was a former optometric assistant for Dr. Douglas E. Huff in Barnesville, Oh. and was also a former Avon Representative. She was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ near Lewisville, Oh., where she was a member of the choir and the Women's Guild. She was also a former 4-H advisor in Monroe County, Oh. for many years.

Surviving in addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Forrest O. "Frosty" Frank, whom she married on June 8, 1957; daughter, Aimee Bartenschlag and her husband, Donald of Zanesville, Oh.; sons, Forrest V. Frank and his wife, Becky of Findlay, Oh. and Matthew D. Frank and his wife, Paula of Grandview Heights, Oh.; two sisters, Sandra Yontz and her husband, Dale of Woodsfield, Oh. and Rose Frank and her husband, Ed of Lewisville, Oh.; brothers, Larry Reich and his wife, Glenda of Woodsfield, Oh. and Vernon E.C. Robert Woodrow Cline

Robert Woodrow Cline, 83, of 38126 Wolf Pen Rd., Woodsfield, died Sept. 22, 2000, in the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield. He was born near Woodsfield, Dec. 12, 1916, a son of the late Alonzo E and Arrena E. Highman Cline.

He was a retired farmer and a member of the Conner Ridge United Methodist Church, near Woodsfield. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII where he received two bronze stars, a purple heart, and was a prisoner of war. He was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 5303, Woodsfield.

Surviving are his wife, Jean E. Turner Cline, whom he married June 10, 1940; four sisters, Mrs. Herb (Grethel) Shafer, Ashland, Wilma Babcock, Frazeysburg, Jean Ambrus, Newark, Mrs. Roy (Dorothy) Fink, Newark; two brothers, Kenneth D. Cline and his wife Rosalie, Woodsfield, Hilton "Pete" Cline and his wife, Evelyn, Polk; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert, Denzil and Eddie Cline.

Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Sept. 24, where funeral services were held Sept. 25, with Harold B. Kinney, Fr. officiating. Burial followed in the Oakland Cemetery, Woodsfield, with full military graveside services conducted by the Belmont Veterans Council.

 

Hulda Young, nee Landefeld

Hulda Young, 92, Miltonsburg Community, Rt. 3, Woodsfield, died March 27, 2000, at her home. She was born in St. Louis, Mo., June 18, 1907, a daughter of the late George and Amanda Meusch Landefeld. She was the last surviving child of the six Landefeld brothers and sisters who emigrated from Obergude, Gemany to Monroe County between 1865 and 1885.

Surviving are a daughter, Judith Ann Young, Washington, DC; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul E. Jr., and Barbara Young, Columbus; three grandchildren; Lisa Lee, Stockton, Calif., Bret Young, Washington, D.C., Sara Young, Madison, Wisc.; two great-grandchildren; Amanda and Bo Lee; a brother-in-law, Richard Riemenschneider, Zanesville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Young, Sr., May 20, 1988.

Friends were received March 30 and March 31 until time of services at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, with Paul E. Young, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the Miltonsburg Cemetery.

Ralph E. Matz, 84, Chillicothe, died Nov. 20, 2000, in Chillicothe following a brief illness. He was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Woodsfield, the son of William F. and Mary Ann Schaub Matz.

He was a retired corrections officer with the Federal Prison Service. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served with the Seabees in WW II. As a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in West Virginia, his group was responsible for the construction of two State Parks. For many years he was active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees on the local and state level. He was an active member of the Orchard Hill United Church of Christ, Chillicothe.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Jenny Matz, Wheeling, William E. and Connie Matz, Boerne, TX; five grandchildren, Laura, Gregory, Katherine, Andrew and Kathleen; a great-grandson, Marcellus; nephew, Jim and wife, Rita Matz, Lebanon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers; two sisters; his wife, Dorothy Anne Miller, Jan. 14, 1996, whom he married May 15, 1949.

Floyd Edgar Denbow, 94, 46017 SR 145, Lewisville, died Dec. 18, 2000, at his home. He was born near Lewisville, 1906, a son of the late William and Elsie Grace Gardner Denbow.

He was a retired furnace operator for the Barneby Engineering Co. in Columbus, and was a Methodist by faith.

Surviving are a son, Floyd F. Denbow and his wife, Mabel, Woodsfield; a daughter, Margaret E Ferguson, Columbus; four grandchildren, Fred Denbow, LeSage, W.VA., Tom Denbow, Gallipolis, Theresa Fogle and Laura Droese, both of Columbus; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Agnes Norman Denbow, who died April 21, 1988; two brothers, Clayton Denbow, Lawrence Denbow; a sister Blanche Stimpert; three grandchildren, Mary Denbow, Paul Ferguson and Robert Whatley.

Freda Mae Smith, 88, of Orrville, died May 12, 2000, in Brenn Field Nursing Center, Orrville. She was born May 2, 1911, in Lewisville, a daughter of the late George Smith and Mary Elizabeth Young.

She was a member of Orrville Christ United Church of Christ, enjoyed quilting at the church and the day care center.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Matilda Hoff, Kate Schneider and Ann Heddleson; four brothers, Henry Smith, Charles Smith, William Smith and Fred Smith.

There were no calling hours. Graveside services were held May 15 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Orrville, with Rev. Randy Gehres officiating. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Margaret G. Weber, 82, of 47083 Northern Rd., Lewisville, died May 9, 2000 at her home. She was born May4, 1918 in Monroe County, a daughter of the late William J. and Gertrude Claus Weber.

She was a 47-year member of the Illdreth Rebekah Lodge #847 of Lewisville, an employee of the Modern Hardware, Woodsfield, for more than 25 years and a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Sharon Weber, Woodsfield, Dale and Gloria Weber, Pataskala; a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Mark (Rebecca) Huffman, Graysville; a brother William J. Weber, Brooksville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard D. Weber, Aug. 1997; three brothers, Wesley, Alfred and George Weger; two sisters, Emma Lent and Marcella Weber.

Friends were received May 12 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services were held on May 13, with the Rev. Richard Wilson officiating. Burial follow in the Middle Church Cemetery, near Lewisville. Rebekah Lodge services were held May 12 at the funeral home.

Delvin Edward Weber, 53, of 39985 TR 95, Woodsfield, died July 30, 2000 in the Barnesville Hospital, Barnesville. He was born in Marietta, Nov. 30, 1946, a son of Dennis and Ruth Ridgway Weber, Lewisville.

He was a 1966 graduate of Skyvue High School and a graduate of Galion Welding School, Galion. He was a laborer for the Ohio department of Transportation in Monroe County, was a member of the Buchanan Presbyterian church, near Lewisville.

In addition to his parents, surviving are two daughters, Jessica Marie Weber and Kimberly Ann Weber, both of Woodsfield; a sister, Mrs. Bill (Brenda) Rice, Marietta; a brother, Kevin Dennis Weber, Caldwell; several nieces and nephews.

Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Aug. 1, where services will be held at 1 p.m., Aug. 2, with Rev. Dr. Stephen Long officiating. Burial will follow in the Buchanan cemetery, near Lewisville.

Helen M. Keylor, 80, of 106 East Marietta St., Woodsfield, died March 23, 2000 in the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Woodsfield. She was born at Lewisville, May 4, 1919, a daughter of the late Walter and Jessie Cronin Feiber.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Church of Christ, a member of the Ladies Women of Moose, Lodge 2247, Woodsfield.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Janet) Keevert, Woodsfield, Mrs. Bill (Patty) Powell, Columbus; three sons, Walter Keylor and his wife, Barbara, Woodsfield, Larry Keylor and his wife, Cheryl, Woodsfield, Fred Keylor and his wife, Alice, Woodsfield; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph L. Feiber.

Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, March 24, where funeral services were held March 25, with Keith Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

    Roy L. Alleman, 70, of Woodsfield, died Friday (June 23, 2000) at Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville, W.Va.
    He was born Feb. 18, 1930, in Monroe County, a son of the late John and Ella Reef Alleman.
    He was retired from Ormet Corp. in Hannibal.
    He is survived by his wife, Wilma Bertschy Alleman; a son, Roger Alleman of Woodsfield; three daughters, Karen Jones and Nancy McKelvey, both of Woodsfield, and Sandy Fontana of New Philadelphia; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
    There will be no visitation. Private graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield, with Paul Eddy officiating.
    Arrangements are being handled by Bauer-Turner Funeral Home.

    She was born Oct. 22, 1936, in Parkersburg, W.Va., daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Madrill Yerkey Blake Lang.
    Mrs. Hart was a homemaker and a volunteer worker for Community Action in Monroe and Noble counties. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
    She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jolena Marie Hart Jackson, on Jan. 17, 2000.
    She leaves her husband, Edwin Carl Hart; a daughter, Mrs. Carl (Vickie) Ady of Beallsville; three sons, Robert (Joann) Burgett of Caldwell, Edwin (Penny) Hart and Carl Jeffery (Tammy) Hart, both of Macksburg; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Jerri) Williams of Weston, W.Va., and Mrs. Roger (Marion) Pickenpaugh of Caldwell; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
    No calling hours or services will be observed. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Weston, W.Va.

She was born Dec. 21, 1921, in Etonwah, Tenn., daughter of the late Frank and Sallie (Gay) Boring.
    Mrs. McClellan retired from Barnesville Hospital, where she had served as a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church, Clarington.
    She was preceded in death by a grandson, Randy McClellan, and a son-in-law, Clifford Downes.
    She leaves her husband, Willie R. McClellan, Woodsfield, whom she married Jan. 1, 1941; two sons, Bill McClellan of Pataskala and Rick (Tammy) McClellan of Grove City; three daughters, Frankie Downes of Lincoln, Del., Mrs. Larry (Pat) Strouse of Obetz and Mrs. Bill (Judy) Davis of Columbus; three brothers, T.J. (Rella) Boring of Knoxville, Tenn., Frank (Margie) Boring of Alcoa, Tenn., and Vernon (Olive) Boring of Merritt Island, Fla.; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; several nieces and nephews.

    Mrs. Crock retired from Texas Instruments.

    She was born Oct. 6, 1914, in Monroe County, daughter of the late Clarence Edward Starr and Clara Paulus Starr.
    Mrs. Dixon was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Woodsfield, Lydia Temple, Pythian Sisters, Past Chef s Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 87, Woodsfield.
    She previously worked with the senior citizens organization of Monroe County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred O. Dixon, in 1972; two brothers, Roy Starr and Vernon Starr; and an infant sister, Helen Lenora Starr.
    She leaves three sons, Eddie (Patsy) Dixon of New Carlisle, Donald (Jeannie) Dixon of Woodsfield and David (Crystal) Dixon of Lewisville, Ohio; a daughter, Phyllis (Jerald) Tadlock of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Clarence Tiny (Fern) Starr of Norton and Ralph Starr of Fort Pierce,Florida; two sisters, Lucy (Franklin) Mallett of New Carlisle and Mary Opal Starr of Woodsfield; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

    Mr. Mehler was a retired service station attendant at Masters Garage in Woodsfield. He was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield, where he was also belonged to the Purgatorial Society.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernetta McCaslin.
    He leaves his wife, Gwen J. Mehler, whom he married, Aug. 2, 1964; a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Jane) McBride of Jerusalem; a son, Richard Andrew (Terri) Mehler of Morristown, Ohio; four sisters, Kathleen Hannahs, Marie Kirkland, Rose Mehler and Clara Kelley, all of Woodsfield; two brothers, Fred Mehler of Moundsville and George Mehler of Woodsfield; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

    He was born Jan. 20, 1919, in Rinard Mills, son of the late George W. and Winona (Taylor) Piatt.
    Mr. Piatt retired from Conalco Aluminum Co., Hannibal, and was a partner of the former Piatt Brothers Contracting Co., Woodsfield.
    He was a member of the Woodsfield United Methodist Church, Woodsfield.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Nina Mae Piatt; four brothers, Rome Piatt, Watson Piatt, Howard Piatt and Gene Piatt.
    He leaves his wife, Eileen (States) Piatt, whom he married Dec. 20, 1941; a sister, Helen Blevins of Grove City; a brother, the Reverend Robert Piatt of Canton; several nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by two sisters, Goldie Haslam and Thelma Litman; a brother, Carl Wright; a nephew, Coleman Litman.
    She leaves two sisters, Alice Stanley of Woodsfield and Mrs. Rudy (Edna) Olson of Green Bay, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Lucille Wright Neff of New Martinsville, West Virginia.; several nieces and nephews, including Connie Wright, her caregiver. 

Robert Woodrow Cline

    Robert Woodrow Cline, 83, of Woodsfield, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 at the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield.
    He was born Dec. 12, 1916, near Woodsfield, son of the late Alonzo E. and Arrena E. Highman Cline.
    Mr. Cline was a retired farmer and a member of the Conner Ridge United Methodist Church, near Woodsfield.
    He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. During his service in the military he received two Bronze Stars a Purple Heart and was a prisoner of war.
    He was a life member of the VFW Post 5303, Woodsfield.
    He was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert, Denzil and Eddie Cline.
    He leaves his wife, Jean E. Turner Cline, whom he married June 10, 1940; four sisters, Mrs. Herb (Grethel) Shafer of Ashland, Wilma Babcock of Frazeysburg, Jean Ambrus and Mrs. Roy (Dorothy) Fink, both of Newark; two brothers, Kenneth D. (Rosalie) Cline of Woodsfield and Hilton Pete (Evelyn) Cline of Polk; several nieces and nephews.

    Charles Wesley Mosher Jr., 69, of Woodsfield, formerly of Cattaraugus, N.Y., died Friday, September 22, 2000 near Woodsfield, following injuries sustained in a tractor accident.
    He was born July 25, 1931, in Gowanda, N.Y., son of the late C. Wesley and Alta Manning Mosher.
    Mr. Mosher was a retired farmer and a Nazarene by faith.
    He was preceded in death by a grandson, Neil Wesley Howard Mosher.
    He leaves his wife, Hope Vincent Mosher, whom he married July 21, 1951; three daughters, Mrs. Carl (Ruthi) Johnson of Woodsfield, Charlene Casserman of Barberton and Belinda Beaune of Omaha, Neb.; three sons, William Mosher of Barberton, Jerald Mosher of Troy, Ill. and Charles W. Mosher III of Ypsilanti, Mich.; a sister, Deon Thalheimer of Cattaraugus, N.Y.; his step-mother, Ruth Byer Mosher of Cattaraugus, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three nieces.

Jenny (Walker) Jones. Mrs. Prestwood was a member of the United Methodist Church of Woodsfield.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, James I. Prestwood, who died in 1990.
    She leaves a daughter, Dorothy Jean and the Rev. Roy A. Walther of Sebring; two grandsons, Roy A. Walther Jr. of Wilmore, Ky., and James R. Walther of Gahanna; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Walther and
Rebecca Katherine Walther.

    Bernice N. Hendershot, 93, of Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Woodsfield, formerly of Marr, died 7:30 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 8, 2000) at the center.
    She was born Oct. 23, 1906, near Marr, daughter of the late Samuel David and Laura Martin Hendershot.
    She was a graduate of the former Bethel High School at Marr, a graduate of the Monroe County Normal School and a graduate of Muskingum College, New Concord.
    She was a retired school teacher having taught in various schools throughout Monroe County for 40 years. She was a member of Creighton Ridge Church of Christ near Sycamore Valley where she was baptized June 5, 1925, by Brother J.M. Cochran.
    She also was a member of the Ohio State Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association and Monroe County Retired Teachers Association.
    Miss Hendershot lived and died in service and devotion to her family, the schools, the community, the Church and to God.
    In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Winland, and a brother, Clyde Hendershot.
    She leaves two nephews, LaVerne (Darlene) Winland of Lower Salem and Tom (Denise) Hendershot of New Brunswick, Canada; a niece, Janie Dodge of Zanesville; two great-nephews, Randy (Sandy) Winland of Prospect and Shane (Kim) Dodge of Indianapolis, Ind.; five great great nieces, Becky Winland and Beth Winland, both of Prospect, Courtney Hendershot of New Brunswick, Canada, and Zoey Dodge and Hannah Stevens, both of Indianapolis; a great-great nephew, Ben Stevens of Indianapolis.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Bud Repco, a sister, Lorena Sullivan, and a brother, Boyd Taylor.

Freda Susanna Lisk nee Stauch

"Apple Creek----Freda Susanna Lisk, 94, formerly of 157 Mill St., died Tuesday evening, Oct. 10, 2000, at Wooster Community Hospital. Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Bauer and Turner Funeral Home in Woodsfield with Rev. William Valentine officiating. Burial will be at Friendship Cemetery in Lewisville. . . .

She was born Nov. 13, 1905 in Lewisville to Charles Frederick and Anna Belle (Morris) Stauch, was a homemaker and had worked at Apple Creek Developmental Center for a few years. She was a member of Christian Church in Quaker City and was a 60-plus year member of East Union Grange and was also a member of Apple Creek Senior Citizens.

Surviving are a son, Charles W. Dillon of Wooster; a daughter, Phyllis E. Kinney of Texas; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Her first husband, Charles R. Dillon, died in 1957 and her second husband, Lawrence Lisk, died in 1988. Two brothers, Charles K. and Thomas T. Stauch, also died previously."

    Freda S. Lisk, 94, of Apple Creek, died Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at Wooster Community Hospital.
    She was born Nov. 13, 1905, at Lewisville, daughter of the late Charles F. and Anna Morris Stauch.
    She was a member of the Christian Church of Quaker City and East Union Grange.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Dillon in 1954; her second husband, Lawrence Lisk in 1988; and two brothers, Charles K. Stauch and Thomas T. Stauch.
    She leaves a son, Charles W. Dillon of Wooster; a daughter, Phyllis E. Kinney of Texas; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

    Kermit Cline, 68, of Woodsfield, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) near Woodsfield.
    He was born Feb. 7, 1932, in Antioch, son of the late Faunt and Mary Stacy Cline.
    Mr. Cline was a former employee of the Timken Roller Bearing Co. of Canton and a retired employee of the Ormet Corp. in Hannibal, with 37 years of service.
    He was a member of the Unity Baptist Church near Antioch, and United Steelworkers of America, Local 5724, Hannibal.
    He was preceded in death by a brother, Dean Cline, and four sisters, Irene Wade, Dorothy Scudder, Grace Kimbrel and Esther Rockwell.
    He leaves his wife, Margaret Polly (Howell) Cline, whom he married Jan. 18, 1952; a son, Wayne E. (Laura) Cline of Woodsfield; a daughter, Mrs. Brain (Sharyn) Crum of Woodsfield; four grandchildren; a brother, Vernon (Mary Annetta) Cline of Woodsfield; a half sister, Patty Jo Pikula of Columbus; several nieces and nephews.

    She was born in Green Township, Monroe County, daughter of the late Frank and Neta (Burkhalter) Dierkes.
    Mrs. Moore was the former owner of the Moore General Store in Miltonsburg and was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church of Christ, Clarington.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Moore, who died in 1983; a sister, Lucille Boltz; four brothers, George, Earl, Henry and Donald Dierkes.
    She leaves a son, Roy (Charlotte) Moore of Clarington; two brothers, Glenn Dierkes of Woodsfield and Walter Dierkes of Powhatan Point; a granddaughter and husband, Mrs. J (Jennifer) Knight of Clarington.

    John Russell Kress, 64, of Woodsfield, died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa.
    He was born July 31, 1936, in Monroe County, son of the late Bernard O. and Mary (Schumacher) Kress.
    Mr. Kress retired from Conalco Corp., Hannibal, and was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield.
    He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of VFW Post 5303, Woodsfield. He was an avid sportsman.
    He leaves three sisters, Mrs. Herbert (Kathleen) Wolf of St. Clairsville, Mrs. Harry (Mary Margaret) Wolf of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Mrs. Paul (Joan) Schneider of Woodsfield; two brothers, Joseph (Phyllis) Kress of Allentown, Pa., and Bernard (Evelyn) Kress Jr. of Centerburg; several nieces and nephews and also great-nieces and nephews.

    Mrs. Elder was a Baptist by faith. She was preceded in death by an infant brother.

    She was active in community affairs and a member of Monroe County Democratic Central Committee and a former member of the Rebekah Lodge. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Secrest, who died 1998; a sister, Lela Oliver; a brother, Paul Hartup; and a granddaughter, Theresa Secrest.

    Frederick E. Rosenlieb, 88, of Trail Run Community, Sardis, Ohio died Friday (Nov. 17, 2000) at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
    He was born July 17, 1912, in Monroe County, a son of the late Joseph and Sara Angus Rosenlieb.
    He was retired from the Switzerland of Ohio School District maintenance department, a self-employed oil field worker, member of the Unity Baptist Church and Sunday School superintendent for many years.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Lohri Rosenlieb, on Aug. 14, 1991; two sisters, Mildred Brown and Hazel Shai; and three brothers, Albert, Francis and Glo Rosenlieb.
    He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Neil (Nancy) Ellis of Sardis; a sister, Lula Bell Huffman of Canton; three grandsons, Bob Ellis of New Matamoras and Jerry and Fred Ellis of Sardis; and four great-grandchildren.

    Mrs. Haren was a member of Woodsfield Presbyterian Church.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard J. Haren; a daughter, Rosemary Grubbs; and a son, James E. Haren. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Jo Palmer) Eddy of Woodsfield; a brother, James R. Menkel of Woodsfield; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

    She was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church, Woodsfield; former 4-H adviser and a member of the St. Sylvester Church Women s Club.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Ellis Smithberger, who died Oct. 1999; and an infant daughter, Andrea Ellen Smithberger.

    He was born March 14, 1938, in Antioch, Monroe County, son of the late Arthur and Margaret (Cline) Stine.
    Mr. Stine was former owner of the former Belmont Grill in Woodsfield. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, and self employed laborer.
    He was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Stine; a sister, Bonnie Lallathin; and a brother, Delbert Stine.
    He leaves three sons, Stanley Stine Jr. of Texas, Dwayn Stine and Brian Stine, both of West Virginia; a daughter, Lisa of North Carolina; a brother, Don Stine of Antioch; a sister, Mary Jean Baker of Lower Salem; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

    Lester W. Landefeld, 84, of Woodsfield, formerly of Keylor Hill Road, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 8, 1916, in Monroe County, son of the late Herman J. and Freda (Reich) Landefeld.
    Mr. Landefeld was a retired farmer, carpenter and school bus driver for the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District. He was a member of Woodsfield Church of Christ, where he had served as Elder from 1967. He was a U.S. veteran, having served in World War II.
    He was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Gladys (Egger) Landefeld, who died in 1984; two sisters, Marie Riser and Mildred Christman; a brother, Walter Landefeld.
    He leaves his wife, Letha (Garrett) Landefeld; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Patricia) Antonik of Bellaire; three sons, David (Joyce), Darrell (Beverly) and Duane (Barbara), all of Woodsfield; a brother, Harold of Miltonsburg; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Estelle B. Schaub

Estelle B. Schaub, 85, Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Woodsfield, formerly of Lewisville, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000 at the Center. She was born in Harrisburg (should read Pennsboro), WV Dec.07, 1914, a daughter of the late Adolph and Emma Jane Barker Morris.

  She was a retired licensed practical nurse at the Monroe County Care Center in Woodsfield, a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ, and the AARP.

  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard Lendon; her second husband, Guy W. Schaub; two brothers, Clarence Morris and Russell Morris; two sisters Vesta Morris and Nellie Matz; one son Leonard Lendon, Jr.

  Surviving are two sons, Carl Lendon of Malaga and Larry Schaub of Lewisville; five daughters, Betty Matson of Buckeye Lake, Cora Blackstone of Lewisville, Elsie Bonam of Wooster, Frances Lendon of Mansfield and Bonnie Eichhorn of Lake Havasu, AZ; a step-daughter, Alvaretta Luyster of Heath; four sisters, Kathryn Piatt of Ashland, Edna Huntsman of Toronto, Bertha Longdon of Ashland, Nettie Brown of Woodsfield; several grandchildren,  several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

  Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9p.m. Thursday where services will be held at 2p.m. Friday, with Keith Jones officiating. Burial follows in Friendship Cemetery.

 

Jesse Junior Morris

Jesse Junior Morris, 56, of Wadsworth, died March 29, 2000, at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital .  He was born March 6,1944 in Monroe county; a son of Elmer and Vesta Morris.

He worked for the Medina County Gazette. He was a deacon and active member of the first Church of Christ in Rittman. He was also an avid Indians fan.

Surviving are his wife, Hazel Ady, whom he married Jan, 27, 1968: three daughters, Dianna Morris, Sharon Morris, Janice Morris; two sons, Jesse Junior Morris II, Jason Morris; two grandchildren, David and Casey Morris; two sisters, Mrs. John (Clara) Crawford and Mrs. Edsel (Dorothy) Hannah s; two brothers, Dale Morris and his wife Almeta, Roger and his wife Barbara.

He was preceded in death by a brother Ermie Morris.

  Friends were received March 31st at the Roberts Funeral Home---Hillcrest Chapel, Wadsworth where services were held April 1st, with C. Emal Allen officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of Christ in Rittman.

Edward E. Salisbury, 71, a resident of Sardis, died Sunday, oct. 8, 2000 at Wetzel county hospital, New Martinsville, WV.  He was born April 19, 1929 at Paden city, WV, a son of the late Lawrence and Bessie Williamson Salisbury.

He was a member of the D.A.V. of Cincinnati and a member of the American Flint Glass Workers Union, Paden city.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Bessie Williamson Salisbury; a sister Bettie Ritchie.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys Morris Salisbury; three sons, Edward Salisbury of Sardis, Clarence Salisbury of Sardis, and Larry Salisbury of Sardis; a sister Bessie Henry of Paden city, WV; four brothers, Leon Salisbury of Sardis, Lawrence Salisbury of Coolville, Lester Salisbury of New Matamoras, Clarence Salisbury of Pennsylvania; four sisters, Cleo Salisbury of Sardis, Mrs. Chris (Helen) ensinger of Sardis; Gladys Adams of new Matamoras, Ruth Rush of Sardis; four grandchildren.

Latta, age 92 a resident of the CantonRegency, passed  away there Monday morning  [submitter's note:  December 25, 2000] after an  illness of several  months.  She was born in Alliance, a daughter of the late Herbert and Viva Agnes Sonnhalter, and had been a resident of the North Canton-Canton area most of her life.  She was a 1926 graduate of North Canton High School. Mrs. Latta was a member of the Canton Art Institute where she had served on the Board of Directors, and also a member of the Whiskey Painters of America. Preceded in death by her husband, Elton L. Latta on Sept. 14, 1966. Survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Carolyn Sonnhalter, of Stow; two nieces and one nephew, Joy Wynn and her husband, William of Stow; Jill Hetland and her husband, Daniel, of Cross Junction, VA; and Jon Sonnhalter and his wife Linda, of Cuyahoga Falls; and two great-nieces, Erin and Lauren Wynn.  Interment in North Lawn Cemetery.  Services will be conducted Thursday  at 1:30 p.m. in the Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home with Dr.  William Watt officating.  Interment in North lawn Cemetery.  Friends may  call Wed. Jack M. Leasure II

Jack M. Leasure II, 40, Woodsfield Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Woodsfield, formerly of Stafford, died Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at the Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling, WV. He was born at Marietta, Ohio, August 27,1959, a son of Bernice Stewart Leasure and the late Jack Leasure. He was a former maintenance worker and a Methodist.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda L. Guiler.

Surviving, in addition to his mother of Caldwell, are a son, Eric Dean Leasure of Beallsville; three sisters, Mrs. Steven (Betty) Stalbosky of North Benton, Mrs. Ronald (Beverly) Schoeppner of Canton and Megan Leasure of Caldwell; two brothers, Darrell Leasure of Marietta and Brian Leasure of Canton; Sandy Weber of Woodsfield; several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Watter's Funeral Home, Woodsfield, today, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Gary Fitzgerald officiating. Burial follows in Mt. Tabor Cemetery near Summerfield.

 

Hester M. Leasure nee Holiday

Hester M. Leasure, 69, of 910 Belford St., Caldwell, died October 18, 2000, in the Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. She was born near Graysville, June 21,1931, a daughter of the late Velma Isabelle Wise Holiday. She was a former seamtress for L.G.A.M. Manufacturing in Woodsfield, and a member of the former Mt. Tabor Methodist Church, near Summerfield. She was also a former member of the Franklin Homemakers Club near Lewisville.

Surviving are her husband, Junior E. Leasure, whom she married May 6, 1950; six daughters, Mrs.Ronnie (Irene) Tidd, Newport, Mrs. Rodney (Darlene) Bettinger, Donna Bennett, Delaware, Mrs. Hank (Debbie) Williams, Marietta, Kandi McQueary, Marietta, Mrs. Rodney (Michele) Nichols, Beverly; a son, Shawn Leasure, of the home; a sister, Nancy Tidd, Lower Salem; two brothers, Roger Holiday, Lowell, Robert Holiday, Whipple; two step-sisters, Linda Holiday, Sycamore Valley, Marion Block, Pennsylvania; two half-sisters, Mary Carpenter, Port Washington, Ada Offenberger, Whipple; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and close friends.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Goff; a brother, Eugene Holiday; a step-father, Cecil Holiday.

Friends were received at the Watter's Funeral Home, Woodsfield, October 21, 2000, where funeral services were held October 22, with Dana Morrison officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, near Summerfield.

 

Leander George Zwick

Leander George Zwick, 91, of the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield, formerly of Lewisville, died November 17, 2000, at the center. He was born near Lewisville, September 27, 1909, a son of the late Joseph and Ida Dick Zwick. He was a retired farmer and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, near Lewisville.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Blackstone.

Friends were received at the Watter's Funeral Home, Woodsfield, November 19. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated November 20 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, near Lewisville, with Rev. Fr. David Gaydosik as the celebrant. Burial followed in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, near Lewisville. Vigil services were held November 19, at the funeral home.

Gervis R. Leach, 68, Miltonsburg-Calais Road, Quaker City, (Calais Community) died June 13, 2000 in the Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus. He was born near Henrysbug, Jan. 23, 1932, a son of the late Arch and Hazel Powell Leach.

He was a retired equipment operator for B&N/Quinn Development in Dexter City and St. Clairsville.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda Dailey Leach, whom he married March 9, 1952; a son John R. Leach and his wife Theresa, Summerfield; two daughters, Mrs. Tim (Kathy) St. Clair, Cambridge, Mrs. Travis (Janet) Wells, Marietta; two sisters, Barbara Floyd, Zanesville, Carol Davis, Oklahoma City, OK.; two brothers, Arch Neil Leach and his wife, Ruth, Quaker City, Rex Leach, Quaker City; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends were received at the Brubach-Watters Funeral Home, Summerfield, June 15, where services were held June 16. Burial followed in the Calais Cemetery, Calais Ohio.

He was born April 18, 1917, in Noble County, son of the late Roy and Ethel (Clark) Bates.

Mr. Bates retired from Clevite Corp. Plant, Caldwell, after 27 years.

He was a member of Bates Hill Church of Christ, where he served as an Elder and song leader. He was a former Deacon of the church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie A. (Wehr) Bates, who died in April 1986; a son Hubert N. Bates; three brothers, Fred, Jack and Joseph Bates.

He leaves his wife, Phyllis M. (Leach) Bates, whom he married Sept. 2, 1988; two daughters, Mrs. John (Karen S.) Hayes of Westerville and Mrs. Jim (Joyce A.) Sprague of Duncan Falls; a sister, Pearl Allbritian of Summerfield; two brothers, Burt Bates of Jerusalem and Eugene Bates of Quaker City; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and special neighbors, Kevin, Linda, Elise, Tyler and Wyatt Flood.

Huff, John T., 61, of 44 West Main Street, Hayesville, died February 1, 2000, at Akron City Hospital. He was born in Fly, September 22, 1938, the son of the late Robert and Mae Elizabeth Winland Huff. He had been a pump assembler at Hydromatic Pump Company for 30 years. He was a member of the Sardis Baptist Church and had served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He had coached summer ball in Hayesville for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Sara Henthorn Huff, to whom he was married March 29, 1964; two daughters and one son-in-law; Rita Parker, of Loudenville, Mrs. Jeff (Brenda) Fisher, of Hayesville; a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Rhonda Huff, of Jeromesville; six grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Huff of Florida, Jack Huff, of Bellaire; four sisters, Deloris Fletcher, of Lorain, Mary Carr, of Cambridge, Lucille Rose, of  New Matamoras, Wilma Stackhouse, of Florida and best friend, Richard Taylor, of South Carolina.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers; four sisters.

Funeral services were held at the Hickes Funeral Home, Jeromesville, February 4, with Dr. Robert Seaman officiating. Burial was in the Vermillion Cemetery, Hayesville, where military rites were conducted. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help defray expenses.

Zelma M. Neuhart, 85, of Cambridge, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. She was born March 21, 1915, near Summerfield, daughter of the late Frank and Martha (Guiler) Mummey.

Mrs. Neuhart was a graduate of Griffith Beauty College in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was a beauty operator at the former Deluxe Beauty Shop and beautician at the former Cambridge State Hospital, where she retired as managing cosmologist. She was a member of the Ninth Street United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. Neuhart, on Dec. 3, 1995. They were married Nov. 21, 1936. Also deceased is a brother, Dwight Mummey and a sister, Vivian LaFollett. She leaves a sister, Norma Burton of Delaware; a brother-in-law Richard (Irene) Neuhart of Batesville; several nieces and nephews, including Denise Neuhart of Cambridge. Friends may call from 1to 2 P.M. Thursday at Bundy-Law Funeral Home, Cambridge, with services to follow at 2 P.M. with the Rev. Virginia Geiger officiating. Burial will be in Guernsey Memory Gardens.

WEIRTON---Ella Mae Baker, 101, of Weirton died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Brightwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Follansbee.

She was born Nov. 30, 1898, in Woodsfield, a daughter of the late Clifford and Martha Moose. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Homer Ricer; her second husband, Arthur Baker; two daughters, Virginia Buzzard and Martha Boggs; two brothers, Bill and Flenn Moose; and five sisters, Jennie, Elvy, Muta, Thelma and Helen Moose.

She was a homemaker and Methodist by faith.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ted (Patricia) Miller of Wintersville, Mrs. Junior (Joan) Truax of Woodsfield, Betty Buelich of Monroe, N.C., and Mrs. Edward (Margaret) Kessler of Wellston, Ohio; 18 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Lodge 6, 50 year member of I.O.O.M. of Barnesville, Lions Club of Barnesville and canteen member of V.F.W. Post 2792 of Barnesville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers; Francis and Delbert Huntsman.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Phillips Huntsman; a daughter, Mrs. George (Pam) Hoover of Beallsville; a step-son, Ronald Linville of Columbus; a step-daughter, Regina Kindler of Florida; four sisters, Lena Hannahs, Ruby Hannahs, Melba Swallie and Mrs. Francis (Joan) Gallagher, all of Barnesville; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.

Henthorn, Eska Eikleberry, 105, of Northfork, West Virginia, formerly of Gilliam, West Virginia, died Jan. 20, 2000 at the home of her daughter, Betty Lodolo, Northfork, following a lingering illness. She was born Sept. 1, 1894, near Antioch, the daughter of Albert and Leonah Smith Eikleberry.  She was a former member of the Unity Baptist Church before transferring
her membership to the Northfork Baptist Church in 1923, where she actively served in various offices in the church and the women's society. She was a member of the Keystone/ Northfork Women's Club, the Garden Club and was active in Girl Scout activities. She was a resident of McDowell County since 1915.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Aldo (Betty) Lodolo, Northfork; Mrs. Edwin (Mary) Dye, Marietta, Georgia; Mrs. Hillary (Ruth) Hutchens, Burlington, N.C.; a son, Don Henthorn and wife Virginia of Athens, W.Va.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren;  several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry A. Henthorn, Sr.; a son, Harry "Cotton" Henthorn, Jr.; a sister, Mrs. Ernest (Caroline) Brown, Sardis.

Friends were received at the Bennett Widener Funeral Home, Northfork, Jan.22. Funeral services were at the Northfork Baptist Church, Northfork, with the Rev. John Sprouse, pastor of the Keystone Baptist Church and John Haum officiating. Burial followed at the Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluewell. Mrs. Henthorn was a aunt of Paul R. Brown, Woodsfield and Jean Brown,
Sardis. She visited several weeks each summer with the Browns while health permitted.

He was co-owner of Luyster Brothers Construction. He was a member of Barnesville American Legion Post No. 168, Barnesville F.O.E., and president of Eastern Ohio Charity Association.

In addition to his parents, Homer and Martha Luyster of Barnesville, he is survived by his wife, Brenda S. Mahoney Luyster; six sons,Bruce and Shawn Luyster of Tennessee; John Luyster of Barnesville; Dennis and Stacey Stewart of Hendrysburg and Jason Stewart of Somerton; two brothers, Michael Luyster of Miltonsburg and Kevin Luyster of Barnesville; four sisters, Barbara Mobley and Sharon Lucas, both of Barnesville, Connie Carpenter of Swanton and Vicky Oliver of White City, Kansas; six grandchildren.

Fleagane Management Company, Cadiz, a member of Flushing Presbyterian Church, former member of Cadiz Business and Professional Women's Club, founding member of the former, International Mining and Manufacturing Festival Board of Directors, she hosted large community Christmas and Easter parties for the children of Cadiz and was a supporter of Sally Buffalo Park.

Surviving are two sisters, Ruth Campbell of Shadyside and Ann Richardson of Orlando, Florida; a brother Howard Dias of Stow; three nephews. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Entombment will be in Holly Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, 172 S. Albert Lee Henthorn, 71, of 115 Main Street, Morristown, Oh, died March 26, 2000 at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, WV. He was born May 8, 1928, a son of Grover Cleveland Henthorn and Addie Delphia Hall Henthorn. He was an army veteran, a Baptist and retired from the automotive tire industry.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Mae Hughes Henthorn; two sisters, Violet Greathouse and Betty Chambers; one brother, Jess Henthorn.

He is survived by three daughters, Lorado Andears of Morristown, May Darrah of Graysville, WV; one brother, Jack Henthorn of Sistersville, WV; two sisters, Sue Fluharty and Jean Freeland both of Paden City, WV; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends were received Tuesday March 28 at the Kelly-Kemp-Braido Funeral Home, 204 Main Street, Morristown. Services will be at the funeral home with Pastor Bob Merrit officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Morristown with military graveside services by Belmont County Council VFW.

Burkhart , Bernard W. "Barney" , age 61 of Canton died Tuesday morning in Aultman Hospital following an extended illness. Born May 27, 1939 in Monroe County, Ohio to the late William and Frances Burkhart. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Canton where he was also a member of the Altar Society. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and was retired from the Timken Co. in 1995 after 30 years of service. Preceded in death by one sister, Evelyn Smith. Survivors include his wife, Sharon of the home, with whom he celebrated 35 years of marriage, one son and daughter-in-law, William and Bethanne Burkhart of Wooster and one granddaughter, Lyndsay Burkhart. There is one brother, Norbert Burkhart of Beallsville, Ohio and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita and Victor Geier of Cleveland, Ohio, Mary and Bernard Brown and Phyllis Hietala, all of Canton. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fr. Gerald J. Sommer, MSC, celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens.

          HARRIETTSVILLE -- Virgil H. Cunningham, 93, of Harriettsville (Ohio 145, Lower Salem) died Saturday evening , December 23, 2000  at Heartland of Marietta.  He was born December 10, 1907, in Bethel Township, Monroe County, to James Lynn and Jemima Springer Cunningham. He spent most of his life in the Harriettsville area and had been employed at Dragon Manufacturing Co. until his retirement.
      Cunningham served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer during World War II in the European, African, Middle East Theater. He helped build bridges across the Rhine, Rohr and Elbe rivers and was awarded a bronze star.
          He was a member of the Harriettsville baseball team that was Noble County champs in 1931, 1932 and 1933. He was a member of Harriettsville United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 750 at Lowell. He had attended Lower Salem United Methodist Church.
          On Dec. 24, 1931, he married Marjorie Pauline Carnal, who survives with one son, James Cunningham of Whipple; one daughter, Faye Love and her husband, Ronald, of Harriettsville; 12 grandchildren, Marilyn Kehl and her husband, Dan, David Cunningham and his wife, Susan, Carolyn Bailey, Cindy Schott and her husband, Dan, Ryan Cunningham and his wife, Holly, Debra Haney and her husband, Roger, Mike Love and his wife, Carol, Doug Love and his wife, Cindy, Mitch Love and his wife, Lisa, Lisa Love, Landon Love and his wife, Charity, and Stacy Dimmerling and her husband, Chris; 21 great-grandchildren, Matthew Carpenter, Kala and Mark Kehl, Brandon, Derrick and Kent Cunningham, Chelsea Bailey, Chandler and Zachary Cunningham, Melissa and Christa Schott, Andrew and Shanaka Haney, Dustin Love, Alicia Love, Joshua Love, Leeanna Love, Jennifer Love, Joe and Kyle Love and Grace Dimmerling; a number of nieces and nephews; and four sisters-in-law, Mary Daniels of Silver Springs, Fla., Mildred Franks of Barberton, Jean Carnell of Wakeman and Rosalie Anderson of Hillsboro, N.D.
          He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Cunningham and Ernest R. "Dick" Cunningham; and five sisters, a sister who died in infancy, Clara Lee, Mae Ullman, Nola Wilson and Elsie Crum; one son, Richard E. Cunningham, who died Jan. 21, 1995; his daughter-in-law, Martha Ida Cunningham, who died Jan. 5, 1997; and one grandson, James Randall
Cunningham.
          Services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at McClure-Schafer Funeral Home in Marietta. Burial is in Salem Township Cemetery with military rites. Friends may call until the hour of the services at the funeral home.

    Dick , Thella Lee Childs , 85, of the Summit Villa Care Center in Tallmadge (formerly of Lewisville, Ohio), died at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2000, at the center. She was born July 15, 1914, in Walthall, Miss., a daughter of the late Everett and Lula Edison Holmes. She was a homemaker, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Woodsfield, Ohio.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harol Childs; her second husband, Joseph Dick; sons, Kenneth Childs and Keith Childs; sisters, Marie Vaughn and Ruby Holmes; brothers, Ralph Holmes and L.B. Holmes; and grandson, John Childs.

Surviving are son, Wayne Childs and his wife, Ann, of Akron; daughter, Beverly McCarthy and her husband, Larry, of Akron; stepdaughter, Thelma Baker of Woodsfield, Ohio; stepsons, Bernard Dick of Woodsfield, Cletus Dick of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Paul Dick of Caldwell, Ohio; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, several stepgreat-grandchildren.

          WOODSFIELD -- Louis H. Schumacher Jr., 66, of Adams Avenue died Thursday , December 14, 2000  at his home. He was born May 13, 1934, in Monroe County to Louis R. and Estella Ackerman Schumacher. He was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Woodsfield. He retired from Consolidated Aluminum Corp. in 1984 and was a carpenter by trade.
          He is survived by three sons, Mitchell Schumacher and his wife, Ashley, of Woodsfield, Perry Schumacher and his wife, Deb, of Woodsfield and Paul "Pete" Schumacher and his wife, Kristi, of West Jefferson; two daughters, Kristel and Wayne Smith of Woodsfield and Lynda and Chris Keylor of Barnesville; one brother, Francis Schumacher of Woodsfield; and six grandchildren, Allison Schumacher, Andrew Schumacher, Doug Hauck, Chelsey Keylor, Zack Keylor and Jordan Schumacher.
         He was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur Schumacher; and one sister, Margaret Ann Schumacher Bride.
      Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Woodsfield with the Rev. David Gaydosik officiating. Burial is in St. Sylvester Catholic Church Cemetery in Woodsfield. Vigil services are at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bauer- Turner Funeral Home, 100 S. Paul St., Woodsfield.

Smith, Luther Smith

    Smith , Luther  80, of Alliance died at 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Community Care Center. Born on February 28, 1920, in Woodsfield, he was the son of Luther Smith Sr. and Daisy (Nalley) Smith. He was a loader and finisher at Keystone B&W Tubular. He retired in 1982 after 29 years of service to the company.
    He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union Avenue Church of Christ. He was a former deacon of the church and was song leader for 42 years. He also enjoyed hunting.
    He served in the U.S. Army during WWII serving in the Pacific Theatre.
    Survivors include his wife, Lucille (McConnell), whom he married on Nov. 16, 1946. Other survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Liebhart of Alliance and Vickie Myers of Clarksville, Tenn.; a son, Gary Lee Smith of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Charlotte Cline of Woodsfield; a brother, Edward Nalley of Canton; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and two half sisters.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Cassady-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Mauldin officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call to the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday. Memorial contributions can be made to Union Avenue Church of Christ, 1445 S. Union Ave., Alliance, Ohio, 44601.

Myrtle M. Balwanz, 76, of 168 Vine Street, New Martinsville, W. Va., died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville, W. Va.

She was Church of Christ faith. She was a retired home health care provider in the surrounding area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. "Lonnie" Balwanz on August 21, 1975; her parents, Friend and Mary Jane McCormick Staley; four brothers, Russell Staley, Calvin Staley, Roy Staley and Ross Staley.

Surviving are one son, Charles W. "Bill" Midcap of Sandy Knob, near Porters Falls, W.Va.; one daughter, Mary C. Taylor of New Martinsville; one brother, Friend "John" Staley of Fairport Harbor, Ohio; five sisters, Grace Stackpole of Paden City, Ola Sams of Pine Grove, Donna Siebles of Cleveland, Ohio, Virginia Stackpole of Randolph, OH, and Betty Oliver of Lavale, MD.; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and nine step great-grandchildren.

There was no visitation. Private services were held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements were handled by Palmer Funeral Home in Pine Grove.

 

Wanda Virginia Lancaster nee Staley

Wanda Virginia Lancaster, 74, of Porters Falls, W.Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000 in Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Vashti Fluharty Staley; a son, Terry Lee; two brothers, Richard A. and Leslie J.; a sister, Imajean [sic] L. Fetty.

Surviving are her husband, Carl J.; two sons, Larry and Gary, both of Porters Falls; three daughters, Joyce Cain, Jennie Lively and Debra Lancaster, all of Porters Falls; two brothers, Karl Staley of Reader and Robert Staley of Middlebourne; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends were received 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Iams Funeral Home, 833 Third St., New Martinsville where services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Interment followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park, New Martinsville.

MASSILLON -- Clarence H. Niesz, 88, of 431 28th St., formerly of Woodsfield, died Tuesday (May 23, 2000) at Shady Lawn Assisted Living Center in Dalton.

He was born April 23, 1912, in Monroe County to Benjamin F. and Margaret Stauch Niesz. He was retired from the Monroe County Department of Engineeers. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ and Knights of Pythias, both of Woodsfield.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Paulus Niesz; one sister, Margurite Littell of Columbus; one sister-in-law, Ann Lucille Hall Paulus of Massillon; five nieces, Lois Paulus of Massillon, Elizabeth Dillon of Wooster, Ruth Ann Senour of Phoenix, Ann Louise Stormer of Philadelphia and Marjorie Fugue of Watauga, Texas; and six nephews, John Lewis Paulus of California, Robert Littell of Cardington, Keith, John and James Paulus, all of Masssillon, and Albert O. Paulus of Bolivar.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother-in-law, John Paulus; and one nephew, Emerson Paulus.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, 100 S. Pauls St., Woodsfield, with the Rev. Donald Rock officiating. Burial is in Friendship Cemetery in Lewisville. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Knights of Pythias services are at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Agin, Mary L. Agin, nee Turner

Mary L. Agin, 83, of Circleville, went to meet with her Lord, Sunday morning, Nov. 26, 2000, at Adena Hospital. She was born May 23, 1917, in Monroe County, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Latta) Turner. On Jan. 9, 1934, she married Carl M. Agin who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1990, She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, Trailmakers Sunday School Class and Eastern Star #90 for 50 years and a retired school cook for Logan Elm School District.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl Agin; two great-grandsons; six sisters, and two brothers.

She is survived by her daughter, Toni (Ralph) Markwardt of New York; sons, Terry (Carolyn) Agin and Kelly (Linda) Agin, both of Circleville; grandchildren, Toye (Brad) Cotton, Mark (Kaye) Agin, Mike (Melissa) Agin, Krista (John) Cooper, Jeff Agin, Jamie and Lisa Agin, Amy and Shane Avery, and Kevin and Kenny Markwardt; 14 great-grandchildren, and brother, Roger Turner of Olney, Ill.

Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at the Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville, with the Rev. James Hazlett officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Eastern Star services will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

COUGHLAN, Harold "Cougie" Andrew, 78, of Wheeling, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, in the Wheeling Hospital.

He was born June 7, 1922, in Wheeling, son of the late Francis M. and Oma Hendershot Coughlan.

He was a retired letter carrier of 50 years, from the Wheeling Postal Service; an Army veteran of World War II, recipient of the Purple Heart from the Pacific Theater; a member of Wheeling Elks. B.P.O.E. 28; a member of Bridgeport Eagles; and a Methodist.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Eileen Kunz.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Clark Couglan, a son, Scott C. of Wheeling; two daughters, Carole Coughlan and Nancy Chatlak and her husband John, all of Wheeling; a sister, Leona Wilkinson of Wheeling; several nieces and nephews.

Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Kepner Funeral Home, National Road at Bethany Pike, Wheeling, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. J. Robert Blankenship officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.
