Carl E. Jackson, 83, of 45620 TR 272, Lewisville, died Dec. 18, 1996, in Selby General Hospital, Marietta. He was born at Antioch, May 6, 1913, a son of the late Alva Jackson and Charlotte Brown Jackson.

He was a retired employee of the Ohio Department of Transportation, Monroe County Division, a member of the Buchannan Presbyterian Church, Lewisville, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge # 186, Woodsfield.

Surviving are his wife, Wilene Young Jackson, of Lewisville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Allan and Susan Jackson, of Wilson, and Kenneth Carl and Pam Jackson, Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Gladys Lude, of Moundsville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Edward Jackson; a daughter, Lois Jackson; four brothers, Jesse, Lawrence, Donavan, and Oliver Jackson; a sister, Lelia Tubaugh.

Friends were received Dec. 20. at Bauer-Turner Furneral Home, Woodsfield, where services were held Dec. 21, with Rev. Colleen Finlay officiating. Interment in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield. Masonic Lodge services were held Dec.

20.

 

Olive Blanche Mobberly, nee Smith

Olive Blanche Mobberly, 94, formerly of 225 1/2 Wooster St., Lodi, and Monroe County, died at 8:05 p.m., Sept. 17, 1996 in the Meadowview Care Center, Seville.

She was born at Lewisville, Sept. 15, 1902, a daughter of the late John and Susan Sloan Smith.

She was a home maker and a member of the Medina Church of Christ at Medina.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Wilbert (Beryl) Morrison, Lodi, Mrs. John (June) Hester, Seville, and Mrs. Rolland (Mona) Bigley, Medina; seven grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Mobberly on Aug. 13, 1979; two brothers, Forrest Smith and Raymnond Smith; three sisters, Florence Powell, Estella Kochler and Edna House; one half-sister, Etta Wittenbrook; two half-brothers, Jay Devore and Delbert Devore; one granddaughter, Charlene Morrison.

Friends were received at Watters Funeral Home Sept. 20. Friends were received until time of services on Sept. 21, at the Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ near Graysville. Burial followed in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Rt. 1, Graysville.

 

Friday, Ruby Pearl Friday (nee Bennett)

  Ruby Pearl Friday, 85, 52352 TH 638, Jerusalem, died Tuesday July 30, 1996 in the Barnesville Hospital.

  She was born March 28, 1911 in Jerusalem, a daughter of the late Benoni and Mary Rice Bennett. She was a member of the Church of Christ, Jerusalem.

  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold H. Friday; an infant daughter, Donna Pearl; a brother, Cecil Bennett; several half brothers and sisters.

  Surviving are two sons, Marvin of Jerusalem and Steve of Woodsfield; five daughters, Mrs. Walter (Mary Kay) Cook of Barnesville, Mrs. James (Sue) Callow and Beverly Friday, both of Jerusalem, Nancy Moose of Portland and Mrs. David (Rhonda) Boughner of Beallsville; sixteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two nephews, Robert Bennett of Rochelle, IL and Howard Landefeld of Woodsfield; a niece, Phyllis Shreve of Woodsfield.

  Friends were received at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville, on Thursday August 1, where services were held on Friday August 2, with Minister Jack Turner and Evangelist Keith Ball officiating. Interment followed in Jerusalem Cemetery.

  Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 225 Exchange St., Akron, OH 44302.

 

Patricia J. Hoff, nee Wine

    Patricia J. Hoff, age 48, of 114 So. Paul St., Woodsfield, died October 23, 1996, at the Barnesville Hospital, Barnesville, Ohio. She was born in Monroe County, Ohio, July 21, 1948, a daughter of Leonard Wine, Woodsfield and the late Fern Marie Baker Wine.
    She was a member of the Goudy Church of Christ near Woodsfield.
    In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, David Hoff, West Salem, Ohio; two daughters, Regina Cheatham, Tupelo, Mississippi; Heather McQueary, Woodsfield; four brothers, Donald Wine, Woodsfield, Daniel Wine, Woodsfield; six sisters, Bonnie Matheney, Clay County, West Virginia, Brenda Mann, Cambridge, Ohio, Denise Wine, Debbie Wine, Delores Wine,  and Doris Wine, all of Woodsfield; one grandson, Mark Hoff.
    She was preceded in death by her mother, Fern Marie Baker Wine and one sister, Linda Sue Wine.
    Friends were received October 25 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services were held October 26 with Minister Todd Allen officiating. Interment in the Goudy Cemetery, near Woodsfield. 

Nancy J. Crum, nee Mercer

    Nancy J. Crum, 60, of 35626 Harper Ridge Road, Jerusalem, Ohio died
December 15, 1996, in Druid City Hospital, Northport, Alabama. She was born April 22, 1936, in Calais, Ohio, a daughter of the late James and Ocie Carpenter Mercer.
    She was a member of the Jerusalem United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 24, Beallsville, Ohio. She was a retired dietary supervisor at American/Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
    Surviving are her husband, Clayton, whom she married on May 22,1954; four sons, Reggie and Marlene, of Cottondale, Alabama, Brent and Pat, and Shawn, all of Jerusalem, Brian Buck and Sharon, of Woodsfield; a daughter, Mrs. Tod (Thalia) Kahrig, of Woodsfield; one brother, James Mercer, of Jerusalem and three sisters, Lodena Christman, Mrs. Bert (Emma) Bates, and Ocie McFrederick, all of Jerusalem; and 10 grandchildren.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Tama Lodena; three brothers, Donald, Joseph, and Ellis Mercer; four sisters, Betty Mercer, Bonnie Egger, Opal Mercer and Martha Lou Betts.
    Friends were received December 19 at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville, where services were held December 20, with the Reverend Richard Wilson officiating. Interment followed in Beallsville Cemetery. Eastern Star services were held December 19 at the funeral home.

Wright, Florence Marie Wright (nee Ludwig)

  Florence Marie Wright, 87, Sand Hill Road, Bellaire, died Saturday, March 23, 1996 at City Hospital, Bellaire. She was born Aug. 6, 1908, in Woodsfield, a daughter of the late William and Ella McMahon Ludwig.

  She was a member of the Church of Christ of Bellaire.

  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Wright; four sisters, Grace McFarland, Clara Bandi, Mary Martin, and Elsie Aleman.

  Surviving are a daughter, Mary Scott of Bellaire; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

  Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, at Bauknecht Funeral Home, Bellaire, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with John Hamilton officiating. Burial follows in Goudy Cemetery, near Woodsfield.

Myra J. Claus Morris, 49, 1580 Redwood Ave., Akron, Ohio, died on October 30, 1996 of a brief illness. She was born in Jerusalem, Ohio a daughter of the late Lewis Claus and Grace Hayes Claus, Barnesville, Ohio. She was married to Byron "Barney" Lee Morris July 15, 1967, formerly of Monroe County, Ohio. She was a beautician at Style Fair Beauty Salon, Akron for 29 years. She was a member and past president of Firestone V. F. W. Ladies Auxiliary, a daughter, Brigette Morris and her fiance, Brian K. Spidle, Green; two sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Linda) Crawford, Reynoldsburg, Ohio and Darlene Smith, Barnesville.

Friends and family were received October 31 at Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Funeral Home, Akron, where services were held November 1, with the Reverend Cliff Garris officiating. Interment in Rose Hill Burial park.

Mildred E. Blackstone, nee Zwick

Mildred Eugenia Blackstone, 83, Hillcrest Manor, Lewisville, died September 26, 1996, at Wheeling Hospital, Medical Park. She was born at Lewisville, January 27, 1913, a daughter of the late Joseph Frank and Ida Mary (Dick) Zwick. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church (Burkart) near Lewisville, where she was a member of the Catholic Women's Club and the Altar Society.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Blackstone. They were married on January 31, 1933. She was also preceded in death by a son Virgil Joseph Blackstone and a daughter, Darlene Regina Liston.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. John (Mary) Sheets of Columbus; seven sons, Vernon J(Cora), Frank (Wanda), Dale (Hilda), Francis (Judy), David (Nicki), Patrick (Aleta) all of Lewisville, Donald (Hazel) of Wadsworth; a brother, Leander Zwick of Lewisville; 41 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at Watters Funeral Home, 37501 Ohio 78 West, Woodsfield, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and on Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church (Burkart) near Lewisville, with the Revs. Fred Kihm and Samuel R. Soprano officiating. Burial follows in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lewisville. Vigil services will be at 7:30 p.m. today.

 

Donald W. Gram

Donald W. Gram, son of Walter and Esther Johnson Gram, age 77, died December 2, 1996 in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 29, 1919 in Gnadenhutten, Ohio. He was a machinist, retiring in 1980 from B & W in Canton after 30 years of service. A member of the Paris Israel United Church of Christ, a former Paris Twp. Trustee for 24 years, bus driver for the Minerva Local School District, President of the Paris PTA, a member of the Paris and Minerva School Boards and founder and Scout Master of Troop #174 in Paris. He was also a Past Master and 25 year member of Tubal Lodge #551, F & AM, Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton, past president of the Minerva Chapter AARP #1808, 25 year member and past president of the Ohio Wagon Train, and of the Robertsville Grange.

Survived by his wife Martha Mercer Gram, whom he married December 29, 1941; daughter, Mrs David (Pamela) Fallott of East Canton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Barbara Gram, Jr. of Paris, David and Patricia Gram of Aurora, Larry and Linda Gram of Minerva; two sisters, Evelyn Hooker of Paris and Rosemary Lindeman of Fort Myers, FL; three brothers, Earl Gram of Paris, Walter Gram of New Philadelphia, OH, Glen Gram of Paris; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Burial at Sunset Hills Burial Park, Canton, OH.

 

Orville Sterling Jones

JONES, Orville Sterling, 93, of Ross Street, Brookside, died Thursday, February 15, 1996, in the Kovacker House, Columbus. He retired from the maintenance department of Stone & Thomas Department Store, Wheeling, and a member of the Church of Christ, Wheeling. He was preceded in death by his wife, Celestia Cora Price Jones; his parents, Joel and Martha Thomas Jones; three brothers, Everett, Leroy and Harry; two sisters, Alice Myers and Anna Smith; a grandson, Scott Alan Martin. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs.. Elmer (Florence) Martin of Columbus; a brother, Homer of Sardis, a granddaughter, Mrs. Michael (Barbara) Free of Columbus; a great granddaughter , Emily Free of Columbus.

Friends received 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Wilson Funeral Home, 920 National Road, Brookside, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.

 

Donald S. Hogue

Lewisville--- Donald S. Hogue, 80, of 32668 Hartshorn Ridge Rd. died at 4:20 a.m. Thursday (March 28, 1996) at Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta. He was born Dec 10, 1915, near Stafford to John Blanchard and Grace Hartshorn Hogue. He was a retired farmer and a former clerk of the Franklyn Twp Trustees. He was a member of the Hartshorn Ridge Church of Christ for 63 years. He was a former school board clerk of the former Stafford Local School District in Stafford. He is survived by his wife, Irene Ovetta Ullman Hogue, whom he married Nov 2, 1935; three daughters, Shirley Ann Wiley of Barnesville, Nancy Carol Cline and her husband Fred, of Woodsfield and Ceinda Lee Archer and her husband Randy, of Columbus; one son Donald Gary Hogue and his wife Carol Lee of Lewisville; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. he was proceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Milford, and John Jr. Hogue. Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Hartshorn Ridge Church of Christ near Graysville with Evangelists Delbert Westbrook and Claude S. Davis officiating. Burial is in Hartshorn Ridge Cemetery, Graysville Rt. 1. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Watters Funeral Home, 37501 Ohio 78 West, Woodsfield. Friends then received one hour prior to the service Sunday at the church.

 

Rosanna J. Josie Leach - nee Betts

QUAKER CITY--Rosanna J. "Josie" Leach, 94, a resident of the Barnesville Health Care Center, formerly of Barnesville, died Sunday [April 14, 1996] at Barnesville.

She was born Feb. 24, 1902, in Monroe County, daughter of the late Theodore "Dory" and Sally Christman Betts.

She was an aide at Barnesville Hospital, and she was an employee of Timken Roller Bearing, Canton. She attended Seneca Valley Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arch Leach, in June 1985; two brothers, Benjamin F. and Earl E. Betts; a sister, Florence Starr.

She leaves three step-sons, Rex, Neil and Gervis Leach, all of Quaker City; two step-daughters, Florence Davis of Elreno, Okla., and Jean Floyd of Zanesville; a brother Robert Betts of Quaker City; a sister Wanetta Neuhart of Barnesville; several step-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at Thorn-Eberle Funeral Home, Quaker City, where services will be 1 P.M. Wednesday with Evangelist Herman Giesey officiating. Burial will be in Calais Cemetery.

 

Ervil A. Crawford

SUMMERFIELD-- Ervil A. Crawford, 89, of 309 Cross Street, died Monday, July 15, 1996 at Summit Acres Nursing Home in Caldwell. He was born June 14, 1907 in Millwood Township, Guernsey County, near Quaker City, to John Samuel and Lorena Morris Crawford. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Seneca Valley Church of Christ near Calais. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah Morris Crawford, whom he married December 31,1945; one daughter, Lucile English and her husband Paul of Woodsfield; one son Eugene Crawford and his wife Eleanor of Summerfield; one sister, Merle Crawford of Zanesville; two granddaughters; seven Step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Crawford.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Brubach-Watters Funeral Home, 202 Main Street, Summerfield, with Keith Jones officiating. Burial is in Batesville Cemetery with full military graveside services conducted by the Belmont Veterans Council. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 t0 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. He was born June 19, 1928, in Woodsfield, son of the late Thomas "Dory" Theodore and Alda Wickham Morris. He was a retired mechanic from Ziler's Garage, Caldwell, after 34 years of service. He was a member of Harmony Christian Church, Cambridge, and the Byesville American Legion. He was a Army veteran of the Korean War.

He leaves his wife, Nancy R. Baumgardner Morris, whom he married August 6, 1955; two brothers, Chester Morris of Oklahoma City and Freeman Morris of Woodsfield; five sisters, Mrs Ervil (Beulah) Crawford of Summerfield, Mrs. Lloyd  (Grace) Henthorn and Mrs. Edward (Gladys) Salisbury, both of Sardis, Mrs. John (Mary) Riggs of New Matamoras and Mrs. Don (Ellen) Nolen of Chadburn, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews.

CALDWELL--Services will be 1 P.M. Tuesday at Sutherland United Methodist Church for Forest W. Carpenter, 81, of Stafford, who died Thursday (March 14, 1996) at The Arbors, Marietta.

The Rev. Gary Fitzgerald will officiate. Burial will be in Sutherland Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, Caldwell. Friends may also call Tuesday from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. at the Church. Stafford Lodge 300 will conduct Masonic Rites at 7:30 P.M. Sunday and Summerfield Chapter 238 will conduct Eastern Star services 7:30 P.M. Monday.

He was born Oct. 28, 1914, near Stafford, son of the late Ulysses O. and Lillie Willis Carpenter.

He was a retired farmer and a retired employee of Franklin Township in Monroe County. He had worked for the Mallett Funeral Home in Stafford and had worked as a grave digger with Lewis McConnell.

He was a member of Stafford Lodge 300 Free and Accepted Mason, Summerfield Chapter 238 Order of Eastern Star, where he served as worthy Parton numerous times, Cumberland Chapter 116 Royal Arch Masons, Caldwell Council 121 Royal and Select Masons, Cambridge Commandry 47, Hoffman Grange 2513 for 49 years and Monroe County Pomona Grange.

He was an honorary member of Masterton Chapter 584, Amazon Chapter 30 Order of Eastern Star, the Monroe County Fair Board and was a lifelong member and former trustee of the Sutherland United Methodist Church. He was a former member of Franklin Grange 2515 at Stafford.

He leaves a sister, Mary Louise Carpenter, a resident of The Arbors of Marietta and four cousins.

 

Morris, Bernard Morris

Morris, Bernard E. , 72, died at his home in Falls Church, Virginia on December 8, 1996. He was born in Barnesville on June 30, 1924, a son of the late Nelson and Mabel Morris. He was retired from the United States Army.

Surviving are three sons; William, Frederick and Ralph; two sisters, Naomi McCort of Barnesville and Bonnie Harr of South Carolina. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Morris, Russell J. , 31, of Cleveland, formerly of Beallsville, died Thursday, August 8, 1996 in Cleveland. He was a son of Ellis Morris of Beallsville and Judy Hensel McCaslin of Woodsfield.

Surviving in addition to his parents, are his step-mother, Susan Morris of Beallsville; three brothers, Danny, David and Dwain, all of Massillon; two half-sisters, Tiffany Morris and Amanda Morris, both of Beallsville; his maternal grandmother, Bernadine Cline of Sardis; his paternal grandfather, Clifford Morris of Beallsville.

Friends were received at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services were held Saturday afternoon. Interment was in Mount Zion Cemetery, near Beallsville.

 

Morris, William S. "Bill" Morris

Morris, William S. "Bill", 70, 35290 Main Street, Barnesville, died Friday evening, November 1,1996 in Barnesville Hospital. He was born in Barnesville on March 17, 1926, son of the late Nelson and Mabel M. Gooding Morris.   He retired from the U.S. Air Force and security guard. He was a member of VFW Post 9712 in Bethesda.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack.M., James R., and Ralph V. Morris and one sister, Ruth E. Morris..

Surviving are his wife, Faith E. Morris; one son, Roger A. Morris of West Memphis, Arkansas; three step-sons; Phillip Bunfill, Quaker City, Thomas Bunfill, Fairveiw and Edward Bunfill, Cleveland; a step-daughter, Penny Stotler, Dillonvale; two brothers, Norman N. Morris, California; Bernard E. Morris, Falls Church, Va.; two sisters Naomi E. McCort of Barnesville and Bonnie I. Harr of Williamston, N.C.; four grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren; nine great grandchildren;and nine step-great-grandchildren.

Friends were received Tuesday at the Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, where services are being held today, Nov. 6th at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Pugh Cemetery, Fairveiw.  VFW Post 9712 conducted services Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

 

Ramona Sue Skinner

Ramona Sue "Mona" Skinner, 38, died in Rockford, Ill., on Jan. 9, 1996, after a long illness. Ramona is now at peace in heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

She was born on Feb. 23, 1957, in Newport, Wash., to Lynn and Retha Kinkade Skinner. She attended the Priest River schools in Idaho, and later received her G.E.D. in Rockford, Ill., where she had lived since 1988.

Ramona is survived by three children: Eric Bennett, 16, and Anita Bennett, 13, and their father, Anthony Bennett, and grandmother, Ann Bennett; and son Jamal Graves, 4, and his father, Gary Graves, all of Rockford. Other survivors are her parents, Lynn and Retha Skinner of Oldtown, Idaho; five sisters, Rose Marie Shannon of Weatherford, Tex., Susan Koch, Lynda Turner of Ona, WV., Jeannie Hutchins of Newport, Wash.; two brothers, Michael Collins of Priest River and Robert Skinner of Idaho Falls, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her youngest brother, Ernie Skinner, in 1973.

Mona leaves behind many friends in Rockford, where her funeral was held on Jan. 12, 1996. An oak tree has been planted along the Rock River in Rockford in her memory.

A memorial service will be held for her on June 15, 1996, at 10 a.m. at the Cornerstone Church of God (formerly the Church of the Nazarene) in Newport, Wash., with the Rev. Earl Browning officiating.

The family requests that, instead of flowers, donations be sent to Ramona's children at the following addresses: Eric and Anita Bennett, c/o Ann Bennett, 1244 Rose Ave., Rockford, IL 61102; Jamal Graves, c/o Gary Graves, 614 S. Pierpont Ave., Rockford, IL 61102.

Wilene E. Jackson, 82, 45620 TR 272, Lewisville, died Dec. 6, 1997, [at 2:00 a.m.] at the Camden Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg. She was born in Monroe County, Oct. 27, 1915, a daughter of the late William E. Young and Julie Viola Hodge Young.

She was a member of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church at Lewisville.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Allen and Susan Jackson, of Wilson and Kenneth Carl and Pam Jackson, of Louisville, KY.; a brother Bud Young, of Canton; two sisters, Edith Young, of Lewisville and Mabel Steele, of Woodsfield; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Jackson, Dec. 18, 1996; a son, Edward Jackson; a daughter, Lois Jackson; two sisters, Audra Harrington and Leora Weber.

Friends were received Dec. 7 at Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services were held Dec. 8, with the Rev. Colleen Finlay officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

 

John L. Frank, 56, of 302 South Sycamore St., Woodsfield, formerly of Rt. 6, Caldwell, died Feb. 9, 1997, at his home. He was born near Lewisville, on Dec. 6, 1940, a son of Ethel Kenney Frank, and the late Osal Frank. He was a former construction worker and coal miner and had attended the Stafford Church of Christ, Stafford.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Grethel Snyder Frank, whom he married Dec. 6, 1958; four brothers, Forrest O. "Frosty" Frank, Woodsfield; James E. Frank, of Woodsfield; Eugene A. Frank, of Newport; and Oscar E. Frank, of Lewisville; one sister Rose Ann Agee, of Lilburn, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends were received Feb. 11 at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where funeral services were held Feb. 12, with Keith Jones officiating. Burial followed in Friendship Cemetery, Lewisville.

Irene J. Young, 83, of 48406 Lewisville Northern Rd., Lewisville, died March 9 1997, in Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 12, 1914 in Monroe County, a daughter of the late William and Minnie Yoe Geldmacher.

She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville, a Sunday School teacher, youth fellowship advisor and a 4-H leader for many years. She was also a member of the Women's Guild of Trinity United Church of Christ, The Barnhart Grange and the Wil-Sun Ruritan.

Surviving are a son, Michael Young, of Miltonsburg; three daughters, Iris Hartshorn, of Lewisville, Carol Dougherty, of Freeport, Virginia Caivano, of El Cajon, Calif.; two sisters, Wilma Christman, of Jerusalem and Melba Stouse, of Union, MO.; several beloved grandchildren; several great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ward C. Young, in 1900; two daughters, Donetta Shepard, on Feb. 18, 1997 and an infant, Elenor Young; three sistern, Mabel Hankinson, Hazel Linn, Bertha Geldmacher; three brothers, Fred Geldmacher, Raymond Gelmacher and Glenn Geldmacher.

Friends were received March 11 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services were held March 12, with Rev. Marcia Werntz of the Trinity United Church of Christ officiating. Interment in Middle Church Cemetery, Lewisville (Ohio).

 

Clifford (Tip) Hines

Clifford (Tip) Hines, 92, of 32969 Hartshorn Ridge Road, Lewisville, died April 2, 1997, at the Barnsville Hospital. He was born in Monroe County May 21, 1904, a son of the late (Nathaniel) Lee Hines and Carrie Morrison Hines.

He was a retired farmer and oil field worker.

Surviving are his wife, Gertrude Hartshorn Hines, of Lewisville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jimmie R. and Joan Hines, Graysville, John Lee and Judy Hines, Lewisville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Delores and Dr. Robert Miller, Zanesville, Carrie Ann and Ronald Turner, Woodsfield; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Jim, George, Leonard, and Lonnie Hines.

Friends were received April 4 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where private services were held April 5, with Tim Fleeman officiating. Interment in the Hartshorn Ridge Cemetery near Graysville (,Ohio).

 

Mary I. Young

Mary I. Sykes Young, 86, of Louisville, passed away July 1, 1997. She was born Sept. 6, 1910, in Canton, to the late Ernest and Sarah Nicholson Sykes.

She retired from the U.S. Optical in Canton, was a member of the Grace Brethren Church in North Canton, a volunteer at Aultman Hospital, past president of the Canton Council PTA and a member of the Canton Garden Club.

Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jane and Dale Rice-Winkler, of Louisville, Beverly Young, of Boardman, and Carol and Gerald Grindstaff, of Canton; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kenneth Young, Jr., of Woodsfield and Henry and Dorothy Young, of Philo; one sister, Agnes Kelley, of Massillon; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Young, Sr., in 1981; one son, Leslie Young; Two brothers, Ernest Sykes, Jr., and Richard Sykes; a sister, Sarah Elizabeth Sykes.

Friends were received July 2 and one hour before services on July 3 at the Stier-Israel Funeral Home, Louisville, with Pastor Terrance Taylor of the Grace Brethren Church officiating. Interment was in West Lawn Cemetery.

 

Doris M. Mobley, nee Gilmore

Doris M. Mobley, 76, of 46564 Township Highway # 187, Clarington, died Oct. 22, 1997 in the Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville. She was born Sept. 21, 1921 at Clarington, a daughter of the late Martin and Della Bonar Gilmore.

She was a member of the Clarington United Methodist Church, Clarington.

Surviving are one step-daughter, Michelle Sawyer, Tavares, Fla.; two sisters, Vera Sawyer, Tavares, Fla., June Riley, of Beallsville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Mobley; two brothers, James and Orval Gilmore and one sister, Dorothy Gilmore.

There was no visitation. Graveside services were held Oct. 24 at the convenience of the family at Clarington Cemetery, Clarington.

 

Carolyn Zogg Wolf

Carolyn Zogg Wolf, 71, of 325 Gilford Ave., Woodsfield, died Oct. 23, 1997, at the Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling. She was born Sept 8, 1926, in Lucasville, a daughter of the late Raymond Zogg and Virginia Elmore Zogg.

She was a retired school teacher and administrator in the Los Angeles County School system, Los Angeles, Calif.; a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Woodsfield, Woodsfield Garden Club, Monroe County Historical Society and the Ohio Historical Society, a graduate of University of West Virginia, and post graduate of the University of Michigan.

Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Jean Zogg, of Bremerton, Washington; a cousin and close friend, Betty Paulus, of Woodsfield and also several other cousins; three nieces; one nephew; seven great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-nephew.

There was no visitation. A memorial Service will be held Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. at the St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Woodsfield, with Rev. Donald Rock officiating. Interment in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield. Arrangements by the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield.

 

Samuel E. Wise

Samuel E. Wise, 68 of 60663 Somerton Highway, Barnsville, died July 20, 1997 at Barnesville Hospital. He was born April 30, 1929, in Bellaire, a son of the late Weston G. and Dorra McFadden Wise.

He was a self-employed building contractor, served in the Army during the Korean Conflict, was an active trustee and head usher of the First Presbyterian Church of Barnsville.

Surviving are his wife, Iva Hoff Wise; three sons and daughters-in-law, Randall Wise, Barnesville, Gregory and Debbie Wise, Bethesda, Todd and Kim Wise, Westerville; daughter, Mrs. Brian (Cathi) McCelland, of Barnesville; a brother, William Wise, of Belmont; a sister, Dorothy Coe, of Utica; six grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Ronald Francis Wise.

Friends were received July 22 at the Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, Barnesville, and until time of services July 23 at the First Presbyterian Church in Barnesville, with Rev. Andrew Woods officiating. Burial followed in Crestview Cemetery, Barnesville.

Marjorie E. Weber

Marjorie E. Weber, 77, of 100 Cherry St., Woodsfield, died April 20, 1997, at the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Monroe County, June 13, 1919, a daughter of the late George and Clara Bott Norris.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Woodsfield, a member of the United Methodist Women, a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 5303, Woodsfield.

Surviving are two sons, and daughters-in-law, John and Suzanne Weber, Steven and Brenda Weber, all of Woodsfield; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and William Daniel, of Worthington; eight grandchildren, Todd, Erik, and Chad Weber, Mathew, Kyle and Alex Daniel, Kristine Schumacher and Kimberly Lane.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucian Weber, in Aug. 1972, and one brother, Harold Norris.

Friends were received April 22 and 23, 2 - 9 p.m. at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services will be held April 24, 11 a.m., with Rev. Lynda Masters officiating. Interment in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

    John Junior Betts, 72, of 2945 Berry Lane, Columbus, Ohio, died suddenly at his home on March 5, 1997, formerly of Lewisville, Ohio.
    He was the son of the late Frank and Rosa Crawford Betts. He was born at his parents home on Lewisville, Ohio, Route 1 on January 11, 1925. He attended school at Calais, Ohio, and graduated from Lewisville High School, Lewisville, Ohio. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the V. F. W. Millcreek Memorial Post 3320, Marysville, Ohio. He was a watchmaker and jeweler for 45 years and a member of the Watchmaker Association.
    He is survived by his wife, Donna G. Betts, of the home; three sons, Juan and Terry (Sandy) Betts, Ft. Myers, Florida, Keith (Joan) Rose, of Englewood; and daughter, Jody (Paul) Zeto, of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Trevor, Christopher, Steven, Santana, Aldena, Dustin and Tony; three sisters, Mary Eva (LaVern) Christman, of Columbus, Lela (Raymond) Christman and Louise Morris, of Barnesville, Ohio; three sisters-in-law, Zelda Betts, of Lewisville, Joy Rose and Penny Loudermilk, of Columbus; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill )Patricia) Rose, of Columbus, and several nieces, nephews,
and friends.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Lou Mercer Betts; five brothers, Clarence, George, Woodrow of the home, Vearl, who died during WWII in Foggia, Italy; one sister of the home, Sara Betts.
    Friends were received March 7 at the Schoedinger Funeral Home North Chapel, Columbus, with Pastor Vernon Jones officiating. A beautiful eulogy was written by his daughter Jody Zeto and was read by his son, Keith Rose. 

LaVern C. Christman

    LaVern C. Christman, 68, died May 6, 1997, at Wright Patterson Medical Center, Fairborn. He was born September 4, 1928, at Monroefield, Ohio, son of the late Elmer and Clara Claus Christman.
    He was a veteran of WW II, Korea and Vietnam. Retired from the U. S. Army. He was a member of the Noncommissioned Officers Association, Whitehall VFW Post 8794 and mended Hearts Chapter 95.
    Surviving are his wife, Mary Eva Betts Christman, Columbus, whom he married June 4, 1949; sister, Carolyn Gadd, Woodsfield; brother, Melvin (Margaret) Christman, Holmesville; nephews, Marty (Robbin) Christman, Mitchell (Lisa) Christman, Ryan Christman; nieces, Mariah Christman and Megan Christman, Wooster; sisters-in-law, Lela (Raymond) Christman, Louise Morris, Barnesville, Zelda Betts, Lewisville and Donna Betts, of Columbus, and many other family and friends.
    Family and friends were received at Evans Funeral Home, Columbus, May 8 where services were held May 9, with Pastor Vernon Jones officiating. Interment in Dayton National Cemetery with full Military Honors by Northway Memorial VFW Post 495 Honor Guard, Charles Carter, Commander, Columbus.

James R. Fussell

    James (Jim) R. Fussell, 80, of 33451 Edwina Road, Lewisville, Ohio died June 26, 1997, at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, West Virginia. He was born in Dallas, Texas, November 28, 1916, a son of the late Little Berry Vaux Fussell and Alamay Fussell.
    He was a retired pope line construction welder; Union 798, a member of the Stafford Masonic Lodge, Osiris Temple Wheeling, and a member of the Switzerland of Ohio Country Club.
    Surviving are his wife, Artie Robinson Fussell, of Lewisville; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Thomas Rheba Fussell, of New Mexico, Daniel and Sue Fussell, of Lewisville, James Fussell, Jr., of Chillicothe, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Jerry Patterson, of Columbus, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by one sister, Margarite Shelter and one brother, Tom Fussell.
    Friends were received June 17 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield. Graveside services were held June 28 at the Friendship Cemetery near Lewisville. Masonic Lodge services were held June 27 at the funeral home. 

 

Donetta Shepard

Donetta Shepard, 60, of Waco, Texas, formerly of Lewisville, died Feb.18, 1997 at a local hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1936 in Marietta, the daughter of Irene Young and the late Ward Young. She married Samuel Shepard, Aug. 15, 1960. She taught chemistry and physics at Reicher Catholic School for the last eight years. She also coached the academic challenge team and was chairperson of the science department at Reicher.

In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by three daughters, Connie Gause, Melissa Pratt, and Samantha Shepard; one son, Tom Shepard; sisters Iris Hartshorn, Carol Dougherty and Virginia Caivano; brother, Mike Young ; and six grandchildren.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by and infant sister, Eleanor.

Friends were received Feb. 20 at Brookview Funeral Home, Waco, Texas. Services were held Feb. 21 at St. Louis Catholic Church, with Father Leo Baysinger officiating.

 

Dempsey "Bud" A. Luyster

Dempsey "Bud" Luyster, 86, of St. Clairsville, Ohio and formerly of the Lorain area, died Thursday, March 6, 1997, in Barnesville Health Care Center, Barnesville, Ohio. He was born Oct.10, 1910 in Belmont Ridge, Ohio. Luyster was a retired railroad machinist. He was a member of Bannock United Methodist Church; the B&O Machinist Lodge 520; and the B&O Veterans Association.

Survivors include his wife, Alvaretta (nee, Lendon); and nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Dessie nee Van Fossen Luyster; five sisters; and a brother.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Kelly -Kemp Funeral Home, 322 N. Main St., Bethesda, where rites will be Monday at 11 a.m.. Burial will be in Rock Hill Cemetery, Flushing, Ohio.

 

Larry J. Booth

Graveside services for Larry J. Booth , 53, of Newark are at 9 a.m. Saturday in Cedar Hill Cemetery with Pastor James Dennis officiating. Mr. Booth died oct. 29, 1997, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. He was born on Nov. 14, 1943, in Barnesville to the late Orville James and Ruth (Morris) Booth.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Christopher Sterling of Heath; two grandchildren; three brothers and three sisters, Gail Hess, Michael Booth, Anita Brown, and Alva Booth, all of Newark, and Patty Brown of Boise, Idaho.

Georgia Mae Rice Palmer, South Shenango Street, Mercer, died unexpectedly at 12:06 a.m. today (8-11-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Greenville. She was 77.
Mrs. Palmer was born Aug. 6, 1920, in Franklin to Burris Washington and Mary Ellen Blair Rice.
She retired from Mercer County Living Center, Coolspring Township; and the State Regional Correction Facility at Mercer.
She was a member and deacon of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer, and belonged to its Day Timers organization.
Mrs. Palmer was a member of Brandy Springers, Mercer; and the Organ Club, a music club of Valley Organ, hermitage.
She was a winner of several awards for her oil paintings and was renouned for her organ and piano playing throughout the valley.
Surviving are: her husband, Kenneth Eugene Palmer, Sr., whom she married July 14, 1937; a daughter, Mary Ellen Davey, Sharpsville; two sons, Kenneth E., Jr., Oil City; and David G., WOODSFIELD, Ohio; a brother, Gene Rice, Seneca, Pa.; a twin brother, George Rice, Lenexa, Ks.; three sisters, Mrs. Bernard (Mildred) Neal, Slippery Rock; Mrs. James (Beula) Jones, New Wilmington; and Gladys Corner, Cochranton; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Harold, Budd and Jack Rice; and a sister, Mable Martin.

Starkey, Warren Russell Starkey

Funeral services for Warren Russel Starkey, 74, of White Oak Circle, Crossville, who passed away May 24, 1997, were held May 27 at Liberty Baptist Church, with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens.
He was born Aug. 4, 1922, in Woodsfield, Ohio, the son of Russel and Elizabeth Millbough Starkey. Mr. Starkey was a truck driver for Grimeyers Gateway Transit, and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Starkey of Crossville; daughter, Janet L. Olson of Crossville; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters Margaret Dalyrmple, Carol Alloway and Wilma Jean Cline, all of Woodsfield, Ohio, and Alverna Campbell of Acworth, Ga.; and brothers Charles Brown of Olathe, Kan., Kenneth Brown of Creston, Ohio, and Cecil Brown of Woodsfield, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his father, Russel Starkey; mother, Elizabeth Brown; stepfather, Clyde Brown; sister, Bernice Brown; and brothers Chester and Roy Brown.
Pallbearers were Phillip Coudriet, Phill Coudriet, Mark Coudriet, Jan Olson III, Tracy Graham and John K. Hines, Jr.
The Rev. Billy Smith officiated.
Bilbrey Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

 

Mary Marna Hackathorn - nee Pavelzik

Mary 'Marna' Hackathorn, daughter of Frederick and Ida Slack Pavelzik, age 68, born January 22, 1929 in Canton, OH, died April 9, 1997 at home following a brief illness. She was a member of Fairmount Nazarene Church. Survived by her husband Harold 'Jake' Hackathorn; daughter Audrey Beard of Canton; two grandchildren, Timmy and Andrea Beard of Canton; one sister Judy Fife of Canton; her niece Judy Fife. Preceded in death by a brother Kenny Pavelzik. Burial at Sunset Hills Burial Park.

 

Gail Wiona Pownall nee Suppes

Gail Wiona Pownall 93, Stow, Ohio died Oct 11, 1997 at the ________Nursing Home. Born near Cameron, Ohio Dec 17, 1903, the second child of George and Laura (Mobley) Suppes. She had lived in the Stow-Kent area since 1921, and was a 75 year member of the First Christian Church of Kent. Proceded in death by her husband Otto; two sisters Evelyn Hickman of Cameron, and Bertha Atzenhofer of Stow, and special niece, Joy Gidley Eden. She is also survIved by several nieces and nephews. Memorial services Sunday, 3:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church of Kent, 335 W. Main St., with Rev. Lauren O'Dell Scott officiating. Burial has taken place at Oakwood Cemetery.

 

Helen Lucille Henderson nee Carpenter

QUAKER CITY--Helen Lucille Henderson, 81, of Quaker City, died Thursday (Oct. 2, 1997) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

She was born July 5, 1916, in Calais, daughter of the late Lewis and Martha Powell Carpenter. Mrs. Henderson was employed at the former Spratt's Grocery Store and Broughton's Lunch Counter. She attended Fairview Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry R. Crabtree in 1946; her second husband, Robert Henderson in May 1980. They were married in March 1947. Also deceased are four brothers, Harold, Marvin, Lester and Floyd Carpenter, a sister, Emma L. Bates.

She leaves a son and daughter-in-law, John and Judy Crabtree of Lancaster, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Judy) McJessy of Buffalo and Mrs. Ron (Patty Jo) Veselenak of Cambridge; a brother, Charles "Mike" Carpenter of Quaker City; three sisters, Hazel Hannahs of Barnesville, Grace Hannahs of Barnesville and Mrs. Lloyd (Betty) Hannahs of Quaker City; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Jeannie Carpenter of Eldon; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 11a.m. to 1 P.M. Saturday at Thorn-Eberle Funeral Home, Quaker City, where services will be 1 P.M. Sunday. Burial will be in Guernsey Memory Gardens.

Flood, 82, of Summerfield, who died Sunday (Oct. 19, 1997) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center. The Rev. William Pickenpaugh will officiate. Burial will be in Eastern Cemetery, Summerfield, with military graveside services conducted by the Belmont Veterans Council.

Mr. Flood was a retired automobile mechanic for White Chevrolet, Zanesville, and was a Protestant by faith. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having received a Purple Heart. He was also a member of VFW Post 2792, Barnesville, life member of the American Legion Post 578, Batesville, life member of Disabled American Veterans Post 28, Cambridge, and the 95th Infantry Division Association Chapter 7, Ottawa.

He was preceded in death by a brother William.

He leaves his wife, Ella Mae Starr, whom he married Feb. 14, 1975; a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Beverly) Smith of Hopewell; two sons, Donald E. Flood of Zanesville and Ronald Flood of Triway; two step-daughters, Barbara Buchtel of Cambridge and Bette Hoffert of Summerfield; two step-sons, David Leach of Belle Valley and Tom Leach of Summerfield; a brother, Roy Flood of Belmont; two sisters, Crystal Gallagher of Bannock and Mary Flood of Caldwell; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

CALDWELL---Earl R. Day, 96, of Caldwell, died Friday (Feb. 21, 1997) at Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge. He was born March 20, 1900, near Flag, in Noble County, son of the late William Rutherford and Mary S. Carpenter Day. He was a well-known welder in the area and owned a welding shop in Summerfield for many years. He owned a shop later in Caldwell. He was a member of Summerfield United Methodist Church.

Mr. Day was the last surviving member of his family, having been preceded in death by three brothers, Kyle C., Bert W., and Carl M. Day; and his first and second wives, Ruth Horton Day and Verna Dotson Day.

He leaves his wife, Grace Love Day; a sister-in-law, Beulah Shackle Day of Mount Vernon; two nephews, Donald and Glen Day; three nieces, Mrs. James (Melva) Rohr, Mrs. Ronald (Diane) Bryant, and Mrs. James (Sharon) Koci, and several step-children and step-grandchildren.

Eddy, Cora E. ,92, Barnesville Health Care Center, formerly of Fairview, died March 27, 1997 at Barnesville Hospital. She was born March 21, 1905 in Guernsey County, daughter of the late John and Lydia Josephine Dyer Meeker. She was a member of the Fairview Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Almon Earl Eddy and Viola Mae Gardiner; three brothers and two sisters. Surviving are three sons, Richard Eddy, Youngstown, Kenneth Eddy, Hendrysburg, and Donald Eddy, Clinton; two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Esther) Luyster and Mrs. Delores Lashley, both of Barnesville; a brother, George Meeker, Glen Burnie , Maryland; 22 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends were received Friday at Campbell-Plumley-Milburn Funeral Home where services were held Sunday afternoon with Evangelist Flavil Miller officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery.

Surviving are a daughter, Patty Kirkbride of Woodsfield; a brother, Wayne Kirkbride of Woodsfield; two sisters, Martha Yoss of Monroe County Care Center and Vera Kanzigg of Ashland.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Morris Kirkbride; one brother, Isaac Kirkbride; a sister, Bessie Kirkbride Mayberry; and an infant sister Rosic Kirkbride. Surviving are a son; Roy Vernon Kirkbride of Quaker City; a brother, Ernest Kirkbride of Bell Nursing Home, Kimbolton, several nieces and nephews.

He was born May 20, 1926 in Neffs, son of the late Herman Saffell and Hazel Saffell Donaldson. He was a retired mechanic for Consolidated Coal Company and was a former musician in several area bands. He was a member of the Fairpoint Polish Club and VFW Post 5356, St. Clairsville, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jack; a daughter,Armetta Jones.

He leaves his wife; Ruth Warfield Saffell; two daughters, Amy Harkins of Ravenna and Shelly Saffell of Bethesda; a son, Matt Saffell of Flushing; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; two sisters, Arlene Zadra of St. Clairsville and Judy Campanizzi of West Liberty, West Virginia; two stepbrothers, John Donaldson of St. Clairsville and Jim Donaldson of McClure, Pennsylvania.

She was born Dec. 9, 1912 in Noble County, daughter of the late James and Minnie Curry Warner. She had been a patient at Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell since June 1997. She was a homemaker and a member of The Summerfield Church of Christ, Summerfield. She was also a member of the Noble County Senior Citizens in Caldwell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Monzona Kirkbride on November 4, 1991; two brothers, Frank Warner and Grant Warner and one step great-grand-daughter, Deanna Smithberger.

Surviving are three daughters, Ethel Weisend of Newark, Lela Hill and her husband, Bernard and Donna Mallett and her husband, Larry, all of Summerfield; one son, Donald Kirkbride and his wife Linda of Whipple; three sisters, Dorothy Carpenter of Summerfield, Effie Warner, Caldwell and Betty Moore, Barnesville; one brother, George Warner of Summerfield; 16 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and one step great-great-grandson.

Opal F. Harvey, 84, lifetime resident of Brush, died this morning at Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center.

Mrs. Harvey was born Nov. 18, 1912 in Brush to John and Elizabeth Oldemeyer. She married Stan Harvey on Jan. 2, 1936 in Cheyenne Wells. She was a member of the Rankin Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one son, John Harvey of Woodland Hills, Texas; one daughter, Maxine Baker of Fort Morgan; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and her parents.

Memorial services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Rankin Presbyterian Church, 420 Clayton St. in Brush. Services will conclude at the church. The Herr Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial services are set for Rialto church builder.

RIALTO - Sunrise Church will hold memorial services at 7 p.m. Tuesday for Wilbert Sheppard, 74, of Rialto who died Wednesday when he fell from a 24-foot ladder in the church that he built, Youth Pastor Richard Gow said. The San Bernardino County Coroner s Office has determined Sheppard died from injuries that he sustained from the fall. Three children found Sheppard s body on the floor of the church, which is also used as a gymnasium. Sheppard, a member since 1960 of Sunrise Church, 2759 N. Ayala Drive, worked as an independent contractor building many churches in the Inland Valley. After he finished building Sunrise, Sheppard continued performing maintenance work at the church. Sheppard also taught an adult Bible study class, attended a regular Tuesday morning men s meeting called Promise Keepers, and played trumpet for five years in the Riverside Community Band, Gow said. The Riverside Community Band will perform at the memorial service and a video tribute honoring Sheppard s life will be shown.

Sheppard is survived by his wife, Phyllis; a son, Pat; a daughter, Kitty Williams; a daughter-in-law, Debra; a son-in-law, Gary Williams; a brother, Keith Sheppard; five sisters, Nancy George, Betty Tiller, Ruth Avis, Marion Meads and Patricia Reger; and four grandchildren. He was a retired employee of the Shelly and Sands Paving Corp. A member of the Ohio Operator Engineers and Woodsfield Church of Christ.

Survivng are four sons, Stephen E. of Woodsfield ,Terry of  Marietta Danny of Lewisville and Bruce of Columbus; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife , Bernice Shepherd Hooper.

Eleanor J. (Tally) Bailey, 64, Beatrice, died Saturday, Oct 15, 1994, at Beatrice Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 5, 1929, at Firth. She worked as a cook at Firth Norris High School for many years before retirement in 1985. She and her husband moved to Beatrice from Firth in 1988. She bowled in the Senior Citizens Bowling League in Beatrice and was a member of the Firth Community Church at Firth.

Survivors: sisters, Maxine Adair and husband Dan of Sulphur Springs, Texas, and Letha Boerrigter and husband Richard of Wymore; cousin, Merle I. Hale of Wymore, who lived with the Tally family from age 7 until adulthood. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo Raymond and Vida (Schell) Tally; and her husband, Emmett Bailey on April 12, 1993.

Nelle Russell Hissom Died April 8, 1997 Nelle Russell Hissom, 99, of Springfield, Mo., and formerly of St. Marys, died April 8 in Springfield. She was born in Noblestown, Pa., to the late Alexander and Margaret Lambing Russell. She was a 1915 graduate of St. Marys High School and possibly the oldest living alumnus. She was a member of American Post 79 Ladies Auxiliary, St. Marys Chapter 31 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Grace Episcopal Church in St. Marys. She is survived by one son, James O. Hissom of Cincinnati; three granddaughters, Judy Billings and Janice Hendrix, both of Springfield, and Jill Kendle of Fort worth, Texas; one sister, Audrey McCarrier of Wichita, Kan.; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olin S. Hissom, in 1968; five brothers; and five sisters. Services were Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev William Reed Wood, Jr. officiating. He was a coal miner and truck driver. He was an Air Force Veteran of Irondale Church of the Nazarene. He was a member of Chapter A, Vietnam Veterans of Moundsville, W.Va.

Surviving are Rose Tice Thomas; two sons, Dustin Thomas of Irondale, Ohio and William Thomas of Porters Falls; two daughters, Amanda Thomas of Irondale, Ohio and Gypsy Thomas of Porters Falls; two brothers, Roger Thomas and Ray Thomas both of New Martinsville; one sister, Eva Hoskins of New Martinsville; one grandchild; three nephews and four nieces; special friends, Angel, Randy, Pat, and Kayla.

WOODSFIELD -- Geneva B. Paulus, 90, of Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center died at 5:25 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 25, 1997) in Barnesville Hospital.

She was born May 31, 1907, in Woodsfield to William C. and Minnie Buchanan Polen. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Woodsfield. In her earlier years, she attended the Buchanan Presbyterian Church and Starr School, both near Lewisville. She was a member of Monroe County Senior Citizens and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5303 Ladies Auxiliary, both in Woodsfield.

She is survived by three sons, William A. Paulus of Woodsfield, Chester E. Paulus of Zanesville and David V. Paulus of Roseville; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles V. and Clelland R. Polen; and Chester Roy Paulus, who died in 1969.

Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Watters Funeral Home in Woodsfield with the Rev. Donald Rock officiating. Burial is in Oaklawn Cemetery in Woodsfield. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather went to be with his Lord Sunday, August 17, 1997, after a short illness. Age 85 years. He was born October 5, 1911 in Woodsfield, Ohio, the son of the late Samuel and Emma (Starkey) Allen. He came to Michigan in 1945. He was employed as an electrician at Grey Iron Foundry, retiring in 1975. Surviving are four children and their spouses, Joanne and Frank Rifenbark, Bad Axe; Dennis and Laura Allen, Ann Arbor; Betty and Leonard Cliff, . . .* Jackie Allen, all of Saginaw; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Barrickman, Boca Raton, Forida. A brother Oscar, has predeceased him.

Mabel E. Steele, 86, of 823 Lewisville Road, Woodsfield, died Feb. 2, 1998 in Bishop Joseph H. Hodges Continuous Care Center, Wheeling. She was born in Monroe County, June 30, 1911, a daughter of the late William E. Young and Julia Viola Hodge Young.

She was a member of Buchanan Presbyterian Church, Lewisville, where she was the church pianist for 60 years and also a member of Eastern Star Lodge No. 268 of Woodsfield.

Surviving are her husband, Glenn; four daughters, Norma Eells, of St. Clairsville, Joy Graham, of Wooster, Janet Pember, of Beaumont, Texas, Rita Braverman, of Alpharetts, Ga.; a brother, Irvin "Bud" Young, of Canton; a sister, Edith Young, Lewisville; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Audrey Harrington, Leora Weber, Wilene Jackson.

She was born in Monroe County, near Miltonsburg, April 9, 1903, a daughter of the late William Brubach and Rosa Burkhart Brubach. She was a member of the St. Sylvester Catholic Church, St. Francis Society, Catholic Women's Club and the Purgatorial Society.

Surviving are a son, William G. Calvert, Lewisville; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Don L. Seamon, of Wheeling; two brothers, Paul Brubach, Woodsfield, Albert Brubach, of Bridgeport; a sister Marie O'Connell, of Woodsfield; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Calvert, in September 1978; an infant daughter; two brothers, Benjamin Brubach and Lawrence Brubach; a sister, Clara Hall.

 

Mary M. Denbow, 41, of 408 Woodland Court, Woodsfield, died July 17, 1998 at the James Cancer Hospital, Columbus. She was born at Columbus, on August 20, 1956, a daughter of Floyd F. and Mabel M. Frank Denbow, Woodsfield.

She was a 1974 graduate of Woodsfield High School. She was a former Avon representative and also a former secretary/treasurer of the Frist Baptist Church, Woodsfield, where she was a member.

In addition to her parents, surviving are two sisters, Theresa Fogle, of Columbus, Mrs. Mark (Laura) Droese, both of Columbus; two brothers, Fred Denbow and his wife, Kathy, of Lasage, W.VA., Tom Denbow and his wife, Michele, of Gallipolis; parental grandfather Floyd E. Denbow, of Lewisville; two aunts, Margaret Ferguson, of Columbus, Opal Frank, of Hartville; eight nieces and two nephews, Lisa, Stephanie, Angie and Kristy Fogle, of Columbus, Amy and Melissa Denbow, of LeSage, WV, Andy, Casey and Samantha Denbow, of Gallipolis, Mrs. Mike (Tammy) Burns, of Chesapeake; a great-nephew, Ian Michael Burns, also of Chesapeake.

She was preceded in death by her parental grandmother, Margaret Denbow and her maternal grandparents, Freeman and Marie Frank.

Robert A. 'Bob' Evans, 68, of 375 West Marietta St., Woodsfield, (formerly of Sycamore Valley) died Aug. 28, 1998 at his home. He was born on May 30, 1930 near Middlebourne, W.Va., a son of the late Clarence and Hazel Gray Evans.

He was a former engineer for the Buckeye Pipeline in Lima and was a former school-bus driver for the former Stafford Rural School System, Stafford. He retired as a street superintendent and cemetery sexton for the Village of Beach City. He was also a member of the Hines Chapel Church of Christ near Sycamore Valley and a U.S. Army Veteran.

Surviving are his wife Dorothy 'Dot" Haslam Evans whom he married on July 12 1974, two daughters, Christine Hughes and her husband Donovan of Marietta and Janice Evans of the home, two sons Talmage 'Tom' Evans of Marietta and Gregory Evans and his wife Carolyn of Kent, one half-brother Leland 'Buss' Gray of Parkersburg, two grandchildren Kale Hughes and Laura Hughes, both of Marietta, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several half-brothers and a half-sister.

Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Aug. 31 where funeral services were held Sept. 1, with Ronald Rosseter officiating. Burial followed at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Graysville.

 

Harold V. Winland

Harold V. Winland, 76, of Bauer Road, Wooster, died July 2, 1998 at his residence. He was born Sept. 20, 1921 in Woodsfield, the son of Emma Denbow Winland, and the late Herbert Winland

He served in the U.S. Army in Korea during WW II. He worked for many years for General Pipeline, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Ohio Operating Engineers for 32 years. After his retirement he enjoyed refurbishing lawn mowers.

In addition to his mother, surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kathy Winland, of Jeromesville; a grandson, Chad; a brother, Gene; four sisters, Delores McGarry, Mrs. Lawrence (Lorna) Jones, Loretta Winland, Beulah Lumbatis, all of Woodsfield.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly A. Furer in 1990, whom he married in 1952; a brother, Spark Winland.

Lawrence Ludwig Kahrig, 92, of Lewisville, died June 3, 1998, at the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield. He was born September 12, 1905, son of the late Phillip Kahrig and Louisa Pfalzgraf Kahrig.

He was a school bus driver, electrician, timber cutter, farmer, and Malaga Township Trustee. He was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ.

Surviving are his wife of 73 years, Ella Christman Kahrig; eight sons, Herman, of Barnesville, Lester, of Pataskala, Virgil, of Marshville, Rodney, of Woodsfield, Francis, of Canton, Kenneth, of Jerusalem, Lloyd, of New Pittsburgh, William of Lewisville; five daughters, Mrs. Edward (Martha) Uppole, of Lewisville, Mrs. Wilfred (Dortha) Matz, of Dalton, Mrs. Robert (Vera) Crock, of Massillon, Mrs. Tony (Leora) Cruise, of Oklahoma, Doris Kahrig, of Rittman; 31 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Homer, of Quaker City; three sisters, Minnie Walters, of Marietta, Marie Brooks, of Mentor and Sophia Reischman, of Barnesville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger; two grandchildren; four brothers, Edwin, Alfred, George, Ben; a sister, Pauline Christman.

Laura A. Kahrig, 84, of Lewisville, died February 17, 1998, at her home. She was born in Monroe County, Oct. 22, 1913, a daughter of the late George L. Christman and Magdalena Matz Christman.

She was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville.

Surviving are three sons, Wayne Kahrig, Wooster, Meredith Kahrig, Woodsfield, Wilfred Kahrig, Burbank; three daughters, Letha Shipe, Senecaville, Edilene Colbentz, Wadsworth, Lillian Kaiser, Strasburg; two sisters, Elma Burkhart, Woodsfield, Beryl Claus, Lewisville; a brother, Paul Christman, Cambridge; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Kahrig, Oct. 31, 1990; a daughter, Viola Paulus, Feb. 1984; two brothers, Arthur and Clarence Christman; two sisters, Esther Claus and Gertrude Kahrig.

Friends were received Feb. 20 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield. Funeral services were held at the Trinity United Church of Christ, Lewisville, on Feb. 21, with Rev. Marcia Werntz officiating. Interment in the Middle Church Cemetery near Lewisville.

 

Benjamin Franklin Kahrig

Benjamin Franklin Kahrig, 81, Byesville Rd., Cambridge, died Jan. 4, 1998, in Cambridge Health and Rehabilitation Center, Cambridge. He was born April 20, 1916, in Lewisville, Monroe County, son of the late Philip Kahrig and Louisa Pfalzgraf Kahrig.

A self-employed truck driver, he was a farmer and retired from Guernsey County Highway Garage. He was a member of Salesville United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline "Pat" Ingram Kahrig; three sons, Donald, Old Washington, Bill, Salesville, Jan, Salesville; a daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Judy) Starr, Old Washington; two step-sons, Gary Kafury, Tom Kafury, both of Cambridge; two brothers, Homer Kafury [sic. Kahrig], Salesville, Lawrence Kafury [sic. Kahrig], Lewisville; three sisters Minnie Walters, Marietta, Marie Brooks, of Mentor, Sophia Reischman, of Barnesville; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ed., Alfred and George Kahrig; a sister, Pauline Christman.

John F. Whitacre, Sr.

John F. Whitacre, Sr., 61, of 71801 Colerain, Bridgeport, died May 16, 1998, at Wheeling Hospital. He was born Sept. 20, 1936 in Belmont, a son of the late Mansel and Wavie Blake Whitacre.

He was a retired employee of Mercury Mining Co., of Flushing and Wheeling Hospital, a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, of Martins Ferry, Musicians Local 492, Uhrichsville Moose Lodge and Bridgeport Eagles 995.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Coulter Whitacre; three sons, John Jr., of Bridgeport, Ronnie Lee, Ava and Joe, of Adena; two daughters, Marcia Beck, of Wheeling and Lisa Kiper, of the home; five brothers, Mansel Whitacre, Jr., of Wheeling, Robert Whitacre, of St. Clairsville, David Whitacre, of Niles, Kenneth Whitacre, of Stubenville and Daniel Fussell, of Lewisville; two sisters, Debbie Fleming, of Arizona and Linda Whitacre of Niles; 16 grandchildren; a great-grandson.

    She was preceded in death by a sister, Stella Moore; two brothers, Fred Roberts and Manuel Roberts.
    She leaves her husband, Clarence Smitty Smith, whom she married September 4, 1950; four daughters, Theresa (Dennis) Yost of Savannah, Georgia, Marjorie (Michael) Yoss of  Woodsfield, Susan (Mike) Jones of Beallsville and Joyce Smith of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; a son, James W.     John V. Stephen, 72, of Newcomerstown, died Friday, May 8, 1998, at Wade Park Veterans Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio.
    He was born January 19, 1926, in Calais, Ohio, son of the late John Stephen and Mattie Hannahs Stephen.
    Mr. Stephen, a graduate of Lewisville High School, was manager for the former M & K. Grocery in Newcomerstown.
    He worked for the former Heller Tool Co. He was also a manager and cook for Newcomerstown Elks Lodge and retired as a cook for the Cambridge Country Club.
    He was a member of Newcomerstown Elks Lodge 1555 and American Legion Thomas E. Montgomery Post. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.
    He was preceded in death by two brothers, Orion and Kyle Stephen, and two sisters, Florence Bunting and Josie Quillen.
    He leaves a son, John Stephen, Jr. of Newcomerstown; a great-granddaughter, Arica Stephen; a sister, Thelma Uppole of Calais; a brother, Neil Stephen of Zanesville, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

    Lucille K. Yost, 85, of 221 West Marietta St., Woodsfield, died June 9, 1998, at the Colonial Manor Health Care Center, Loudonville, where she had been a resident for three weeks. She was born November 25, 1912, in Woodsfield, a daughter of the late John and Louise Claus Feldner.
    A graduate of Woodsfield High School, she was a former news correspondent for the Cambridge Jeffersonian, and a homemaker, she was also a lifetime member of the St. Paul s United Church of Christ Woodsfield and a former member of the Woodsfield Garden Club.
    Surviving are two daughters and son-in-law, Carolyn Yoss, Ashland, Ohio, Barbara and Roger Schumacher and wife, Patricia, of Loveland, Ohio, Roger Schumacher, of Boise, Idaho, Charles Yoss and wife, Ann, of Springboro; three
granddaughters, Mrs. Ray (Jane Yoss) Hobson, of Jeromesville, Mrs. Brad (Kate Yoss) Long, of Ashland, Ohio, Mrs. Alex (Elizabeth Schumacher) Beauford,  of Cincinnati, Ohio; 10 great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford (Tip) Yost, in February 1981, whom she married in 1932.

Clarence E. "Shorty" Morris

Clarence E. "Shorty" Morris, 86, of 68 E. Third St., died Thursday (11 July 1998) afternoon at Kingston of Ashland, following a long illness.

He was born Feb. 04,1912 in Pennsboro, WV and was the son of Adolph and Emma Barker Morris.

He had resided in Ashland for 40 years, moving here from Woodsfield, Ohio.

Mr. Morris was employed as a professional tree trimmer for Nelson Tree Service, retiring in 1977. He was a former employee of Philway Products Co. in Ashland.

On Nov. 18, 1933 he married Bertha M. Huntsman who survives him. He is also survived by five sisters; Edna Huntsman of Toronto, Ohio; Nettie Brown and Estelle Schaub of Woodsfield; Kathryn Piatt and Bbertha Longdon of Ashland.

Preceding him in death were------parents: Adolph S. and Emma Barker Morris; brother----Russell A. Morris ;

Sisters---Vesta Morris of Woodsfield and Nellie Matz of Ashland, Ohio. 

Services will be 1p.m. Tuesday at Denbow-Primm-Kemery funeral home with Gerald A. Gess officiating.

Burial will be in Ashland memorial park.

Doy Brown   

Doy Brown, 90, 613 South Fourth Street, Woodsfield, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998 at the Barnesville Hospital, Barnesville Ohio. He was born at Jasper, Ark. on August 14, 1907, a son of the late Oscar and Lovie Lee Brown.

He was a retired supervisor for the Nelson Tree Service in Dayton and a Protestant.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Cora Young, Ida Pruitt, Georgia Clayburn and Louise Brown; two brothers, Howard and Wilburn Brown.

Surviving are his wife, Nettie Morris Brown; two sons James R. Jr. of Zanesville and Glenn of Woodsfield; three daughters, Helen Harvey of Edgewater, FL., Mrs. John (Linda) Kurtz of Somerton and Mrs. Larry (Nancy) Wise of Woodsfield; two sisters, Gladys Clayburn of Claysville, Ark. and Retha Watson of Nail, Ark.; a brother, Eugene Brown of Warsaw; 14 grandchildren,16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, today 5-8 p.m., where services will be held at 1p.m. Friday, with minister Fred Ricer, Jr officiating. Burial follows in Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield.

 

Perry Mellott

Perry Wesley Mellott, 74, Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Harper Ridge Road, Woodsfield, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998 in Barnesville hospital. He was born Feb. 22, 1923 near Beallsville, a son of the late James and Alice Baker Mellott.

He was a retired employee of Baker Farm Equipment near Lewisville, attended United Methodist Church, Jerusalem, a member of American Legion Post 768, Beallsville and was an army veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Emma Thornberry.

Surviving are his wife, Lydia Persons Mellott of Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center; two sons, James and Herman Mellott both of Woodsfield; a daughter Molly Fogle of Fayetteville. NC; a step-daughter, Rosalee Manges of Quaker City; a brother James Mellott of Beallsville; two sisters, Clarabell Baker of New Castle and Bessie Carpenter of Wilson; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held today at 2p.m. at Harper Funeral Home, 52728 Ohio Ave. Beallsville, with the Rev. Edward Emory Jr. officiating. Burial follows in Boston Cemetery, Boston, Ohio, with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post 768, Beallsville.

Mr. Zwick died at 4:55 p. m. Monday at his home. A son of Charles and Gertrude (Crock) Zwick, he was born March 14, 1918, in Lewisville, Ohio. A former resident of the Alliance area, he had lived in Pompano Beach 24 years. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II serving at Pearl Harbor. Mr. Zwick was a member of George D. Worth American Legion Post 574.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Doris Ann (Gregory); a son, Charles R. Zwick of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Carol A. Johnson of Pompano Beach; and Deborah S. Rowell of Cumming, Ga.; a brother, Charles Zwick of Caldwell, Ohio; four sisters, Ella Smithberger of Lewisville, Gertrude Sorg of Mount Perry, Ohio, Mary Kress of Alliance, and Edan Bjorkman of Sebring, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

She was born Oct 10, 1911 in Monroe County near Stafford, the daughter of the late Clyde Stallings and Blanche Danford Stallings. Mrs Hayes was a homemaker and worked at RCA Cambridge for 10 years.  She was a member of Old Washington Presbyterian Church and the Old Washington Fire Department Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband Foster I Hayes who died May 5, 1988 whom she married Feb 15, 1933, a sister Gail Lowry, a grandson James Hayes.

Charles H. ''Dutch'' Millbaugh helped sculpt the local skyline.
The Independence carpenter helped build Riverfront Stadium (now Cinergy Field), the Brent Spence Bridge, the Procter & Gamble building and the W.C. Beckjord power plant in New Richmond, Ohio.
''He liked being outdoors and he was a hard worker,'' said a daughter, Ethel Messer of Union.
''He came from a hardworking German family, and he was talented at it. He didn't have but a fourth-grade education, but he could read a blueprint as good as anybody else.''
Mr. Millbaugh died Monday night (4 May 1998) at the Florence Park Care Center. He was 85 years old.
Mr. Millbaugh was born and reared in WOODSFIELD, Ohio.
He was noted for the private homes he helped build in Northern Kentucky.
''He did the plumbing and the concrete - he could do everything,'' said Mrs. Messer.
After he joined Cincinnati Carpenter Union Local No. 2., Mr. Millbaugh helped build local landmarks. He retired about 30 years ago, then managed Edroy Court Apartments in Cincinnati. He was a member of the Independence Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting deer.
''He liked horses,'' Mrs. Messer said. ''He wasn't a betting man, but he loved a good horse race and a beautiful horse.
''He was very outgoing and friendly. He always made people feel good about themselves.''
Mr. Millbaugh's wife, Martha Stadig Millbaugh, died in 1984.
Other survivors include sons Charles E. Millbaugh of Independence and David Millbaugh of Mishawaka, Ind.; a daughter, Vickie Barnes of Wilder; a stepdaughter, Margaret King of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 15 step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home in Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery in Taylor Mill.

Mr. Carpenter was a retired employee of the Village of Barnesville Street Department.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Welsey Carpenter; three sisters, Edith Stephens, Eleanor Carpenter and Norma Lee Stephens.

He leaves his wife, Ethel M. Leach Carpenter; a son David Carpenter of the home; four daughters, Mrs. George (Linda) Curluter, Mary Sullivan, Mrs. Larry (Sandra) Wells, and Shirley Dyer, all of Canton; two brothers, Lawrence Carpenter of Lebanon and James of Barnesville; a sister, Lucille Huntsman of Barnesville; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Crestview Cemetery, Barnesville.

WOODSFIELD---A. Burdette "Smucker" Carpenter, 74, of Summerfield, died Wednesday (Aug. 12, 1998) at his home.

He was born Oct. 14, 1923, in Summerfield, son of the late Ross and Alice Hayes Carpenter.

Mr. Carpenter was retired farmer and a retired manager for the Ohio Division of Wildlife.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha Lynn Baker; three brothers, Maywood Carpenter, Roger Carpenter, and Raymond Carpenter; two sisters, Ildrith Coultas and Eleanor Carpenter; a grandson, Jason Hines and a great-grandson Tyler Carpenter.

He leaves his wife, Leah Lousie Leach Carpenter of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Bill (Linda) Warner and Mrs. (Melody) Warner, both of Summerfield; three sons, Lloyd Carpenter and Mickey Carpenter, both of Summerfield and Jeffery Carpenter of Sarahsville; two sisters, Melissa Carpenter of Cambridge and Margaret Delong of Summerfield; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

She was born Sept. 1, 1913, in Monroe County, daughter of the late Albert and Ella Sloan Green.

Mrs. Bunting was a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ. She had also been a member of the Senior Companion Program for several years prior to her illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Bunting; a son Orris Bunting; a daughter, Shirley Tuttle; three brothers, Arley Green, Virgil Green. Leonard Green; two sisters, Nora Snyder and an infant sister.

      Violet M. Bunting, 85, Woodsfield, died Wednesday, September 23, 1998 at the Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield. She was born in Monroe County, September 1, 1913, a daughter of the late Albert and Ella Sloan Green.

He was born April 20, 1927, in Barnesville, son of the late Bernard and Hazel Bunting Carpenter.

Mr. Carpenter was a retired livestock buyer for Ritterger Brothers in Zanesville. He also retired from Halls IGA of Barnesville. He was a Methodist by faith and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by a son, Scott; three brothers, Jackie, Gary and Don Carpenter.

He leaves his wife, Donna J. Roby Carpenter; two sons, Larry Carpenter of Canal Winchester, Jeff Carpenter of Barnesville; two brothers, Kenneth Carpenter of Marango, Richard Carpenter of Barnesville; three sisters, Mrs. Sam (Ruth) Allar of Barnesville, Mrs. Robert (Jeanette) Hall of Barnesville, Sue Boulet of Barnesville; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Angeline Marie Dougherty, 88, 39006 Ohio 800, Antioch, died Oct. 22, 1998, at the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 26, 1910, a daughter of the late Andrew and Beulah Brown Kenney.

She was a member of the Graysville Church of Christ.

Surviving are two brothers, Ronald and Eugene Kenney, both of Antioch; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Dougherty; four brothers, Harold, George, Joseph and Robert Kenney.

Friends were received Oct. 25 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services were held October 26, with Ministers Claude Davis and Harold Kenney officiating. Burial followed in the Antioch Cemetery, Antioch.

Saffell, Raymond L., 72, Hudson Street, Beallsville, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998 in Barnesville Hospital. He was born October 24, 1925 in Beallsville, a son of the late Benjamin and Elva Blue Saffell. He was a retired employee of the Switzerland of Ohio School District.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mayme Harltey Saffell; two sisters, Jean Gaskins and Melba Henthorn.

Saffell, Sylvia Mary, 87, Frankford Road, Salesville, formerly of Alledonia, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Zanesville. She was born July 24, 1916 in Hendersonville, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late John Ruschak and Wilma Pyunk Ruschak. She was a Catholic.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Saffell; three sons, Donald, Robert and Richard Saffell; a grandson ; three brothers, George, William and John Ruschak; two sisters, Helen Ruschak and Ann Kukielka.

Surviving are five sons; Lloyd of Salesville; Floyd and Roger, both of Alledonia; Mike of Beallsville and John of New Lexington; two daughters, Lucille Gillope of Okercoke, North Carolina and Nancy Moellendick of St. Joe, Bellaire; a brother Pete Ruschak of Steinersville; a sister, Wilma Mathes of Alledonia; 33 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Beryle I. Oldemeyer, 80, of Longmont died at the Peaks Care Center in Longmont Saturday.

Mrs. Oldemeyer was born Sept. 1, 1918 in Ashland, Neb. She lived in Fort Morgan, Sterling and Westminster, then moved to Johnstown in 1944 and to Longmont from Johnstown in 1975. She was a graduate of Fort Morgan High School.

She was married July 17, 1937 to Orville Oldemeyer in Fort Morgan.

She enjoyed playing bridge, oil painting and she loved the outdoors, camping and fishing and was a great cook, hostess and seamstress.

She is survived by her sons, John Oldemeyer of Fort Collins and Steven of Oak Harbor, Wash.; two daughters, Sandra Eddy of Arvada and Susan Smith of Woodland Park, and one sister, Helen McManus of California. There are nine grandchildren.

She was preceeded in death by her parents, John Henry and Grayce Good Luhr; her husband in January 1977 and sister Estella Longo.

Memorial services will be Friday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Johnstown United Methodist Church with private inurnment at the Johnstown Cemetery. Cremation was handled by the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association in care of the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St., Longmont, 80501.

Beryle I. Oldemeyer, 80, of Longmont died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998 at Peaks Care Center in Longmont.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Johnstown United Methodist Church. The Rev. Peter Freytag will officiate. Private interment will be at Johnstown Cemetery.

Beryle I. Luhr was born Sept. 1, 1918 in Ashland Neb., to John Henry Luhr and Grayce Good Luhr. She graduated from Fort Morgan High School.

She married Orville Oldemeyer on July 17, 1937 in Fort Morgan.

Mrs. Oldemeyer was a homemaker. She enjoyed playing Bridge, oil painting, camping, fishing, hunting, cooking and sewing.

Nancy O. Bonam nee Thompson

Nancy O. Bonam, age 76 of East Canton, passed away Monday morning after a courageous battle with cancer.   September, 1998. Daughter of the late Willard and Elsie (Fawcett) Thompson. She was an East Canton area resident for the past 40 years. She was formerly employed by the Timken Co. for 17 years, Member of the Indian Run Christian Church, where she was active in the women's Dorcas Circle and the Hilltoppers. She was greatly involved with all of her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawerance Bonam, in 1988 to whom she was married for 42 years; two grandchildren; Timothy and Jennifer Leach; one brother Francis Thompson, three sisters Mary Berry, Virginia Robuck and Carrie Clyde; one infant brother and one son-in-law Bruce Haines. She is survived by six daughters and sons in laws Evelyn and Gordon Leach of Kansas, Mary Haines of East Canton, Hannah and Ralph Price of Canton, Sandra and Gregg Hockenberry of Ashland, Carol and John Mangun of Carrollton, Amy and Ronald Plesia II of Louisville; three sons and daughter in laws, William and Lynn Bonam of Louisville, Larry and Mary Bonam and Garry and Deborah Bonam, all of East Canton. 20 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, one sister Wilma Perry of Cadiz, one brother in law Thomas Clyde of Martinsferry, Ohio.

NEW MATAMORAS - Lewis Everett Moore, 82, of Star Route died at 3:30 p.m. Friday (February 27, 1998) at his home.
     He was born Nov. 27, 1915, in New Matamoras, to James Franklin and Anna (Hupp) Moore.  He was a millwright at Knowles Pottery in Newell, WV., and retired from Conalco in Hannibal.  He was a verteran of World War II.
     He is survived by his wife, Zella Marie (Metts) Moore, whom he married Dec. 2, 1950; two sons, James F. "Jim" Moore and his wife Sherry, of Little Hocking and Roger Moore and his wife Brenda, of New Matamoras; four grandchildren, Carrie, Eric, Wendy and Aaron Moore; and one sister, Ruth Crawford of Salem.
     He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harry, Forrest, Floyd and Bernard Moore; and four sisters, Goldie Cline, Mildred Lisk and Virginia and Edith Moore.

    He was a retired construction worker, a Protestant by faith, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, a member of the American Legion Post # 768, Woodsfield, The VFW Post # 5303, Woodsfield, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie # 2302, Woodsfield.
   In addition to his mother, of Proctor; surviving are his wife, C. Rose Haslam Van Druff; a son, John Van Druff, Camp Lejune, N.C.; four daughters, Crystal Van Druff, Woodsfield, April Van Druff, Mellissa Van Druff, Faith Van Druff, all of Las Vegas; a stepson, Gary Knowlton, Clarington; one step-daughter, Sherry Childs, Woodsfield; four sisters, Mary Ellen Stillwagoner, Proctor, Margaret Howell, New Martinsville, Wanda Morris, New Martinsville, Juanita McMahon, Anaheim, California; 14 grandchildren.

     Thomas S. Matz, 38, of 1126 Columbus Circle died unexpectedly early Sunday morning in Samaritan Hospital. He was born February 13, 1960, in Ashland, Ohio, and was the son of Walter S. and Mary L. Jacobs Matz. He had been a resident of Ashland his entire life. He was a graduate of Ashland High School class of 1978. He was employed by the ARKO Corp. as a shipping supervisor.
    On July 1, 1988, he was married to Kathy S. Legg, who survives him. He is also survived by two daughters and one son, Courtney of Galion, Ohio, and Natasha and Shane, living at home. He is also survived by two grandchildren; his parents, Walter and Mary L.Matz of Hopewell, Ohio; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Cheryl and William Briggs of Ashland and Sue and Dan Jones of Hayesville, Ohio; two brothers, Robert and Richard, both of Hopewell, Ohio; his mother and father-in-law, Edward and Shirley Legg , both of Shelby, Ohio.
    Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home with the Reverend Doug Tackett and the Reverend Ed Legg officiating.
    Burial will be in the Ashland County Memorial Park.

Nina Luella Hogue

Nina Luella Hogue, 101 , of 203 West Court Street, Woodsfield, died Feb 4, 1998, at The Monroe County Care Center. She was born near Antioch, on June 13, 1896, a daughter of the late Daniel C. and Frances Devore Petty.

   For all of her adult life she was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, and for many years was associated with the Plainview Church of Christ congregation. Following her change of residence from Antioch to Woodsfield, she became a member of the Woodsfield Church of Christ. Only in the past few years was she unable to attend regular services because of declining health.

   Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Averille (Lucille) Payne, Ashland, Mrs. Edward (Lorna) Stegner, Fairborn, Mrs. Donald (Mavis) Kochendorfer, Kettering; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Leland Hogue, Woodsfield, Forrest and Patricia Hogue, Cleveland, Tenn, Dalton and Lucille Hogue, Woodsfield; a daughter-in law, Ruth Hogue, Woodsfield; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren.

   In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her husband, Forrest S. Hogue, in 1971; a son, Norman Hogue, in 1997; two brothers, Lloyd Petty and James K. Petty ; a sister; Edith Lashley.

   Friends were received Feb. 6 at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, where services were held Feb. 7, with Harry Summers officiating. Interment in the Antioch Cemetery, Antioch. 

 

Lynn Quartus Skinner

Lynn Quartus Skinner, eldest child of Quartus Monroe Skinner and Frances Queen Morris Skinner, was born on a ranch east of Gordon, Nebraska on March 8, 1901 and departed July 25, 1998 at the age of 97 at Valley Vista Care Center in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Lynn worked on cattle ranches most of his life. He lived at and proved up a homestead near Trump, Colorado. He moved to Idaho in 1938 where he bought land in the Vay community and made it his residence for 11 years. He worked with building Camp Farragutt during World War 2 and also worked at Hunters Point Naval Base and Hanford Atomic Works. Later he worked at Diamond National Corporation for 12 years until retirement in 1962 while he lived at his home one mile east of Oldtown, Idaho. Lynn with wife Retha was the father of six children: Lynda, Jean, Ramona, Ella, Ernest, and Robert Patrick (Paddy). He was preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings, both of his sons, and daughter, Ramona. Grave side services were held with the Rev. Frank Dizmang officiating. Burial was in the Newport Cemetery.

SANDPOINT -- Lynn Quartus Skinner, 97, a former Oldtown resident, died July 25 at a Sandpoint care center of natural causes.

A graveside inurnment will be held Wednesday, July 29, at 10 a.m., at the Newport Cemetery.

He was born March 8, 1901, near Gordon, Neb., to Q.M. and Frances (Morris) Skinner.

He worked most of his life on cattle ranches. He lived and proved up a homestead near Trump, Colo. In 1938 he moved to Idaho and bought land in the Vay area, where he lived for 11 years.

He worked on the construction of Camp Farragut during World War II and also worked at the Hunter's Point Naval Base in California and at Hanford Atomic Works.

He later went to work for Diamond National Lumber Co. and spent 12 years there before retiring in 1962. After retirement, he moved to the Oldtown area. **

Survivors include his wife, Retha Skinner of Sandpoint; three daughters, Lynda Turner of Ona, W. Va., Jeannie Hutchins of Newport and Ella Skinner of Seattle; a son, Paddy Skinner of Nampa, Idaho; a step-son, Mike Collins of Priest River; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; all of his siblings; a son, Ernest Skinner; and a daughter, Ramona Skinner. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

He had moved from Vay, Idaho, in 1949 to work at the sawmill and didn't leave there until around 1996 when he went to a senior citizens housing complex and later to the nursing home."

Funeral services for Ruby E. Greenfield were held June 15, 1998, at the First Presbyterian Church in Villisca, Iowa with the Rev. Nolan Leavitt officiating. Burial was in the Arlington Cemetery, near Villisca.

Ruby Ellen Greenfield was born September 27, 1911 in Adams County, IA to William and Lula (Bowers) Stalder. She died June 12, 1998, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA.

Pallbearers were Kenny Hamman, Chad Fulton, Clay Johannsen, Tom Beaty, Jeff Fulton and Bryon Sunderman. Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Gridley, Jim Milligan, Gayle Heard, Bill Dunn, Joe Greenfield, Ron Jackson and Tom Knapp. Flower bearers were Gail Knapp, Mildred Doan, Ruth Poston and Velma Wheeler. Anabelle White was organist with Ross Rossander as soloist. Steve Greenfield and Alan Gridley were ushers and Dorothy Pond and Opal Milligan were the register.

She married Glen Greenfield in 1927 at Clarinda, IA. Last August they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary and always lived in the Villisca area.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

She is survived by her husband and children, Ed Greenfield and wife, Pat; Jerry Greenfield and wife, Carol; all of Villisca; Dorothy Hamman and husband Floyd of Red Oak, IA. Also 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren. Also sisters Esther Anderson and husband Dave of Clarinda, IA; Ruth Lampe of Winterset, IA; and Marie Pullen of Villisca, IA; and brother Harold Stalder of State College, PA.

Memorials may be directed to the Villisca Senior Center, Ambulance Department, Fire Department or the First Presbyterian Church.

 

George E. Stacy

George E. Stacy, 70, of Akron, passed away Thursday morning, April 30, 1998.

Born in Woodsfield, Ohio, on Aug. 25, 1927, to his parents, the late John W. and Vera M. Stacy, he lived most of his life in the Canton area, moving to Akron 25 years ago. Mr. Stacy was a retired employee of Kempthorn Motors, retiring in 1992 after 43 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post 44 and a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Stacy of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, George and Barbara Stacy of Lakeland, Fla., John Stacy of Canton, Joe and Susan Stacy of Canton, Mike and Chris Stacy of Canfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Veronica and Lester Sickafoose of Louisville, Ohio, Valerie and Dean Flory of Canton, Lori and John Hall of Lakeland, Fla.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Watson and Ally Stacy of Canton, Carl and June Stacy of Massillon. There are 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also surviving.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, 1:30 p.m., at the Reed Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond L. Tucker officiating. Burial will be at North Lawn Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home one hour prior to services, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Hospice, 3358 Ridgewood Rd., Akron 44333.(Reed, 477-6721.)

Stella M. Chesser, 89, of Barnesville, died Friday, April 3, 1998 at Barnesville Hospital. She was born in Barnesville, August 13, 1908, the daughter of the late John and Edna M. Ramsey Ritchie.*

She was a retired operator for Mountain State Telephone, a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Roby; second husband, Raymond E. Chesser; one daughter, Diane Joan Roby; one brother, Arthur Ritchie; one sister, Cecelia Ritchie.

Surviving are one son, Donald L. Roby, Phoenix, AZ.; one daughter, Barbara Jean Berquist, Barnesville; one brother, Bernard Ritchie, Barnesville; two sisters, Regina West, Martins Ferry and Jeanette Medley, Barnesville; three grandchildren, Roderich Roby, Terry R. Roby both of Arizona, and Karen M. Detweiler of Cincinnati; three great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Friends were received at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, Barnesville where services were held with the Rev. Murray Allen officiating. Burial followed in Southern Cemetery, Barnesville.

Medley, Paul L. Medley

Paul L. Medley, 83, of 227 Laws St., Barnesville, died Sat., Dec. 19, 1998 at Barnesville Health Care Center, Barnesville. He was born April 30, 1915 in Barnesville the son of the late Otto and Sue Phillips Medley.

He was a retired truck driver with the former D. Wilson Trucking of Barnesville and with Red Star Trucking of Detroit, Michigan. He attended the First Christian Church of Barnesville, a member of Barnesville Elks #1699, life member of Barnesville Loyal Order of Moose, and the Ham Radio Operators.

Surviving are his wife Jeanette Richie Medley; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas J. (Sue Ellen) Kelly of El Cajon, Ca.; one granddaughter, Stacy Dee Robinson* of Columbus; one grandson, Todd Mark* Reischman of San Diego, Ca.; one great-grandson, Collin Reischman of Missouri.

Friends were received at Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, Barnesville where services were held with the Rev. William Worcester officiating. Burial followed in Crestview Cemetery, Barnesville.
