Samuel Danford Leach

Source: The Barnesville [Ohio] Whetstone; Thursday, 24 Sep 1964

A Barnesville resident, a World War II veteran, died in Barnesville Hospital Friday morning, following a horrible accident which occurred at his home 331 Harrison Ave, Thursday evening about 6:30.

Samuel Danford Leach, 38, was a victim of a horse which he had mounted, crushing him inwardly when it reared over backwards and then rolled on him. It seemed some of the injury was caused by the saddle horn when it was pushed into his chest.

The big spotted pony belonged to his 13-year daughter, Joyce Leach and had been purchased for her about two weeks before the accident.

Several people gathered around the accident scene in the Leach backyard when they heard screams of children when he was crushed by the animal. It could be readily seen that he was seriously hurt and Mrs. Newton Ferguson, RN, at the Barnesville Hospital who lives nearby, rushed to the scene and gave mouth-to-mouth respiration, and also accompanied him to the hospital when the ambulance arrived. Surgeons worked on the victim in a battle to save his life, but due to inward injuries, surgery was apparently of no avail.

A veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, he was born in Noble County, June 10, 1926, a son of Barney and Grace Spence Leach.

Surviving are his wife, Sarabell Montgomery Leach; two daughters, Joyce Ann and Gay Lynn, both of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Wehr, Mrs. Ethel Carpenter, both of Barnesville, and Mrs. Cledith Carpenter of Calais; a brother, Jack Leach, of Barnesville, and his parents.

Friends were received after 1 P.M. Saturday at the Campbell Funeral Home, where services were held Sunday at 2:00 P.M., the Rev. R.E. Swinehart officiating. Burial was made in Crestview Cemetery.

Jones, Samuel Pond Jones

Sad Sam Jones Dies at 73, Pitched 22 Years
Woodsfield, Ohio (AP)
Sad Sam Jones, who shared with Cy Young the record for longevity among major league baseball pitchers of all time, is dead.  The 73-year-old Jones was stricken here Wednesday at his home where he had lived since leaving baseball for good after a brief stint as a minor league relief hurler in 1947.
Jones would have been 74 in 20 more days, and also would have marked his golden anniversary with his wife, Edith, the same day.  Sad Sam enter the major leagues with Cleveland in 1914 and pitched through the 1935 season, chalking up 22 consecutive years. Only he and the great Young of Newcomerstown, Ohio, pitched that many years consecutively in the majors. All of Jones' pitching was in the American League.  Jones, in addition to Cleveland, pitched for New York, St. Louis, Washington, Chicago, and Boston. He had a lifetime record in the majors of 228-216, including 36 shutouts, and a no-hitter on Sept. 4, 1923, defeating the old Philadelphia Athletics 2-0.
While Jones' career was impressive, it also was marked by disappointment.  For one thing, he pitched in six games in four World series without winning a game. While with the Yankees in the 1923 World Series, he tossed a four-hitter at the New York Giants only to lose 1-0 on a fourth-inning home run by Casey Stengel.
Jones set two records of dubious distinction for the Yankees in 1925. He gave up 127 earned runs that year while posting a record of 15-21. The earned run mark and the 21 games lost stand today in the Yankees' record books.  Many athletes have used the nickname Sad Sam, but Paul Turner of Woodsfield, a long-time friend, said Jones was the original. "But he wasn't sad. There wasn't anything sad about him.... I don't know where he got the nickname," said Turner.
The family did not disclose the cause of death.  In addition to the widow, Jones is survived by two sons, Paul, of Erie, PA, and George, of New York City. Jones became the president of the Woodsfield Savings and Loan Co. after returning to his home town 19 years ago.  Funeral services will be held here Saturday.

Funeral services will be held here Saturday afternoon for Samuel Pond Jones, 73, of South Paul Street, Woodsfield, who died yesterday morning, July 6, at 10:15 in the Barnesville Hospital following a lengthy illness.  Mr. Jones was a retired baseball player, having pitched for the major leagues for 22 years, joined famous pitchers with one no-hit, no-run game, and is well known and remembered in baseball circles throughout America. he was active in the local finance business and was president of the Board of
Directors of the Woodsfield Savings and Loan Co. He was a member of the Woodsfield Presbyterian Church and the Woodsfield Masonic Lodge.  Mr. Jones was born July 26, 1892, at Woodsfield, a son of the late Delbert and Margaret Clingan Jones.
Surviving are his wife, Edith Kerr Jones; two sons Paul of Erie, Pa, and George of New York City; three granddaughters; and two brothers, Robert Jones of Woodsfield and Charles Jones of Mt. Vernon, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Bauer and Turner Funeral Home with Reverend Boyd Burd officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery

Samuel (Sad Sam) Pond Jones

WOODSFIELD--The 73 year-old Woodsfield man whose 20-year career in major league baseball brought him in contact with some of the games's greatest players died in Barnesville Hospital Wednesday morning.
Samuel (Sad Sam) Jones had been ill for three days and died at 10:15 a.m.
Jones retired from baseball at the age of 43 following a career which took him from the Zanesville team of the Interstate League in 1913 to fame with the New York Yankees 10 years later.
He started his climb after his release from the Zanesville Club following the great 1913 flood which wiped out the ball. A year later, he spent in Woodsfield, Jones was hired by a Portsmouth team and later went to a Cleveland farm club for his first major league break.
As a right handed pitcher he had a 2-8 record in 1915, but was traded to the Boston Red Sox, where he compiled his best season, 23-16 in 1921.
Jones' claim to fame appeared Sept. 4, 1923 when he hurled a perfect no-hitter against Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics.
Until 1927 Sad Sam was with the Yankees, then was traded to Washington, St. Louis and the Chicago White Sox.
Baseball greats were well-known to Sad Sam. The nickname was pinned on him by a New York newsman, named Ford Frick, who though he always looked forlorn despite his success. Jones called Ty Cobb "the greatest all - around played I've ever seen."
He played the game along with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzerri, Waite Hoyt, Cy Young and Mickey Cochrane.
A field oddity included seldom throwing pickoff balls to first base. In one five year period, he never threw to first base once, and was later mentioned for that in Ripley's Believe it or Not.
He always kept his hat on throughout a game and fans seldom got a look at his face, which enforced the nickname given by a man who was to become commissioner of baseball.
Sam was born July 26, 1892, in Woodsfield, the son of Delbert and Margaret Clingan Jones. Survivors include his widow, the former Kerr; two sons, Paul, Erie, Pa., and George, New York, N.Y.; two brothers, Robert, Woodsfield and Charles, MT. Vernon; and three grandchildren.
He was president of the Woodsfield Savings and Loan Co., a member of the Woodsfield Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge. 6 July 1966 Cambridge Jeffersonian Cambridge Ohio

Deputy Brown Killed; Assailant Shoots Self

AZ Range News - Dec 11, 1969

Cochise County Deputy Sheriff Leroy Brown, 38, was shot to death Saturday and his assailant later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sheriff Jim Willson said Brown was shot two or three times by Andres Griego, 20 of Bowie, at a restaurant. Griego was taken to Tucson Medical Center following the slaying, where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the head. His body was found in a Bowie school yard.

Willson said Griego has threatened Brown and and two other deputies following his arrest in August for disturbing the peace. Griego spent 30 days in jail on the charge, and after being released, went to Superior, AZ. Willson said Griego apparently did not return to Bowie until Saturday.

The Sheriff said Griego entered a restaurant where Brown was, apparently after seeing the deputy sheriff there.

After entering the restaurant, Willson said, Griego ordered a cup of "hot, hot coffee," Griego went over to the table where Brown and another man was seated and threw the coffee in the deputy's face. As Brown got up, Willson said, Griego pulled a .25 caliber automatic from a paper bag and shot the deputy in the face. Willson said Griego shot Brown at least one more time, and may have fired a third shot.

Following the shooting, the Sheriff said Griego fled the restaurant and ran some two blocks to the city's high school where he shot himself.

A coroner's inquest held after the shooting confirmed that the deputy had been shot and killed by Griego.

Deputy Brown is survived by his wife, Clarene Jackie Brown, Bowie; two sons: Jeff, 8; and Todd, 4; his father, J.E. Brown, Westville, OK; and his mother, Mrs. Pearl (Jones) Brown, Dos Cabezas. Also survived by sisters Jean, Joann, Sandra, and Janie.

Ben F. Dixon

SOURCE:  The National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volumes 1-85, 1600's-1900's. Page 57-58

Old-time members of the National Genealogical Society will remember a tall, bald man in a Navy officer's uniform, whose smile and hearty handshake exuded warmth and cordiality, and whose booming voice infected his hearers with the same enthusiasm for genealogical research and for extending the spheres of the influence of the society.

This was Ben F. Dixon, a native of Kahoka, Missouri, and a long time resident of San Diego, California.  It is with deep regret that we received word of his death at his home, 6008 Arosa Street, San Diego, on Saturday, 27 June 1970, at the age of 78.

In his adopted city he was Curator of the Junipero Serra Museum in Presido Park, 1949-1955, and for 11 years taught history at Adult Evening School.  He started the Walking Tours of the Old Town.  He was a member of the Squibob Chapter of E Clampas Vitus, an organization founded in the Gold Rush Days by men who like to mix history and fun.  In 1968 on a visit to Washington (D C), he addressed the Society on the historical and genealogical work being accomplished in San Diego.

His publications included "Contributions of Haiti to the Independence of the United States, 1776-1826" (1950), which won an award from the Haitian Government; "Diario, The Journal of Padre Serra " (editor; 2nd edition, 1967), and with Mrs Dixon, "Five Generations of American Dwelles" (1960).

The Society extends its deepest sympathy to his widow, the former Alice L. Dwelle; his sons Dale and John and his daughter Mary Alice   Six grand children also survive.  Burial was in Greenwood Mausoleum. Milton Rubincam.
