BUCHANAN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Buchanan Presbyterian Church
- 1928
This
picture of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church may have seen better days but the
church itself looks much the same today as it did in 1928. For views of the church taken in December
2002, click on View 1 and View
2. It is located on Ohio Route # 78
between Woodsfield and Lewisville, Ohio about 2 miles from Lewisville. In 2000 it shared a pastor with the
Woodsfield Presbyterian Church. The cemetery for this church is across Rt. 78
approximately behind the photographer.
An
unknown historian writing the history of Summit Township in about 1898 wrote
the following regarding the Buchanan Presbyterian Church. "The first society organized was by the
Presbyterians, about the year 1830.
They erected a log building, and, about 1853, tore it down and erected a
frame, on the same site. It was again
remodeled in 1881. Rev. McCandlas was
the first minister. This church is
knows as the Buchanan Presbyterian Church.
Among the first members were Wm. Buchanan and wife, Robert Smyth and
wife, Robert Smith and wife, Wm Pickens and wife, James Graham and wife, Robert
Cooper and wife, and Archibald Cooper and wife."
