BATTLE SCARRED WORLD WAR
VETERAN NEW COMMANDER OF PATTERSON TRUE POST VFW
Still carrying bullets and many deep scars received in
France during the World War, Pearl L. McCurdy, Marietta man, is able to be
around and among his friends and has taken on added activities for the current
year as Commander of Patterson True Post No. 128 Veterans of Foreign Wars, an
organization that is carrying out a broad program of patriotic activities. The
post, under his leadership, has outlined an extensive season of work among its
members and with war veterans and their dependents generally.
McCurdy
enlisted when the first call came for troops, was one fo the first Mariettans
to go overseas and nearly all of his service was spent under fire. He saw
service with the old Indian Head Division, the Fighting Second, which was made
up of regular army troops and marines. The Second Division took part in many of
the famous drives in which the A. E. F. participated and among the battles to
its credit are Verdun, Cantigny, Chatteau Theirry, Champaigne, Soissons and
others. McCurdy was over the top seven times and was three times wounded the
last time being shot in 12 different places. He spent many months in hospitals
after that and for months it was feared that he would not survive. He wa
decorated by the French government, every man in his division being cited for
bravery. He likewise was decorated by the American government, this award being
President Wilson's Accolade of the New Chivalry of Humanities certificate.
