John David Latta - A Sketch

John David Latta, usually referred to as Jack, was born in Rangoon, Burma, the son of missionaries John Tilden Latta and his wife Mary Elizabeth Udell Latta. His parents went to Burma in 1905. All their children were born there. They returned to the United States about every seven years for a furlough. Around 1920 the children were left at the Fanny Doane Missionary Home for Baptist Children in Granville, Ohio, while the parents returned to Burma.

Jan Edith Latta (1913-2006) said: In 1930 Jack was at Dennison University in Granville, Ohio. Uncle John's son Jack became a doctor in Jerusalem, Ohio, not far from Malaga, like his uncle Allen Forest Latta. Allen s son Heber was also a doctor. Heber helped finance Jack s education through medical school. For a time all three Latta s Allen, Heber, and Jack were practicing in the Monroe County area. Jack later moved and practiced in Chicago. He was in a bad accident and became addicted to painkillers. In spite of his addiction, he continued to practice at the Lima Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

Jack s son Michael stated in 2001, "Unfortunately, there probably isn't very much I can add to the Latta history. My father, John David Latta, died in about 1962 when I was still only 7. Dr. John David Latta was quite ill in the years before he died. Osteoporosis forced him to wear a back brace and he was heavily dependent on painkillers."
