The Samuel Hodge Family

(about 1822 - 1896)

Samuel Hodge was born in Pennsylvania and moved with his father to Monroe County, Ohio probably in the early 1840s. Samuel s father, William Hodge bought a farm on October 8, 1844 from Joseph McCoy consisting of 80 acres situated in Range 6, Township 4, Section 28 (description = E1/2 of SE). The deed is located in Volume 8, page 6. This property is situated in Bethel Township on Pleasant Ridge. It is almost directly across the road from the Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ. Samuel Hodge married Catharine probably about 1858 based on the age of their oldest child. We don t know the maiden name of Samuel s wife, Catharine. She was reported to be half American Indian tribe unknown. The couple had 6 children. Three of the children, James Madison Hodge (May 28, 1861 - October 5, 1874), Samuel McClellen Hodge (March 15, 1865 - October 7, 1874), and Sarah Catharine Hodge (May 29, 1867 - October 15, 1874), died within 10 days of each other in October 1874 of diphtheria. Of the three children who reached adulthood, one was George Washington Hodge, the author's great grandfather

The death record of Samuel Hodge lists his date of death as Feb. 11, 1896. His age on this date was 79 years. His year of birth was calculated from these data for this document. Samuel s place of residence at the time of death was Sycamore Valley, OH.
