AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF ELMER DELLWOOD ELLSWORTH MC CURDY
Elmer
Dellwood Ellsworth McCurdy, (the compiler of this history) was
born April 10, 1863. As he grew up, he became
afflicted with nervous trouble, which deprived him of attending school
regularly, hence he received a very limited education. When about 18 years of
age, his physician advised a frequent change of scene as a remedy for his
ailment. He associated himself with Lee's Ethoscope combination, going to
Atlantic City, thence thru the south.
In
1882, he became stage manager of the Gem Theatre in Baltimore and in
1883 of Winters Summer Garden in Trenton, NJ. In the
summer of 1884, he
was Assistant Advance Agent of W. W. Wallace's Circus,
quitting the show
business in the spring of 1885, but reentered it again in 1888, touring with McCready's Stock Company thru the east and Canada, then thru the western and southern states. On June 25, 1885, he married Rebecca Jane Braden of Jackson County, WVA, locating in Wood County; the same state where he had lost all of his possessions by fire. To this union, one son, Harry Ellsworth, was born March 18, 1886.
