This is one of
two photos of the Woodsfield, OH town-square that was taken by Reuben Perry Ralston around 1900.
The
picture was taken from atop the 4-story Woodsfield Bank Building. The pole in the center of the town-square is no longer
visible in this photo as it is in the companion photo. The pole would be off to
the upper right and outside the field of vision of this picture. The
major street of the picture is Rt # 800 and it leads south toward the upper
right corner of the picture. The street that runs perpendicular to Rt. #
800 and off toward the upper left corner of the picture (between a long 2-story
brick building on one corner and the light colored building with an awning
on the other corner) is Rt. # 78 leading toward the east. This street is
also known as Eastern Ave. If you follow Rt. # 78 for 18 miles you will
come to Clarington, OH on the Ohio River. The 2-story brick building on
the corner now has a Subway (sandwiches) on the ground level. The light
colored building is the defunct Monroe Movie Theater.
This and a companion
photo appear to have been taken about the same time. There appears to be some kind of celebration
in progress that is best seen on this photo.
