TOBACCO
ON THE WAY TO MARKET
Every now and then there is a picture that
speaks so loudly of life in the days of our early Monroe County ancestors --
the picture worth a thousand words.
This is one such picture.
Written on the back of this picture are these words: "They always
said this was taken in Miltonsburg."
If it were taken in Miltonsburg, the house in the background belonged to Fred
Stalder (Lot # 6). The main street of the town is just to the right. (Click
here to see the plan of "Plan of Miltonsburg.") The people in the photo would be looking
toward Yunkes' Store on Lot# 5. The wagon, which is loaded with two hogsheads
of tobacco, is headed east. There were
several tobacco houses in Miltonsburg at various times.
