Philip
SHUMAN was
born in 1774. He died before 1830. This is believed to be Philip Shuman who was
living in Monongalia County, WV in the 1810 census. According to the history of John Shuman (1765/84-1832) of
Monongalia County, John was of German parentage, he was from the Philadelphia
area and he had two brothers who came with him to West Virginia, Philip and
another brother who was not named (this would be Henry according to the 1810
census). This biography stated that one
of the brothers served in the Revolution. They would have been too young for
this. But a Philip Shuman did serve in
the War of 1812 from Monongalia County in Col. Henry Coleman's Regiment, Capt.
James Harry's unit.
Another record states John
Shuman was from the Lancaster County, PA area.
Some of John's family settled
in Tyler County and their line is well documented. Other Shumans appear in Wetzel/Tyler who are not descended from
John but appear to be closely related to his family. In 1830, Sophia Shuman
appears as a head of household in Tyler County. She is living near John and Jonas Shuman. On the death record of John Shuman (Tyler
County WV 1 Aug 1871) his parents are given as P. & S. Shuman. (John also
named a daughter Sophia.) Sophia is
living with Mary Shuman Schoonover in Monroe County in 1850. Between 1840-1847 Jesse Shuman lived in
Monroe County near the Schoonovers. He had a son named Philip born ca 1842, who
inherited the land when Jesse died.
Jesse's wife was Mary E. Cox (later Porter), the daughter of Levi Cox of
Tyler County WV. (Petition for partition suit 1847 Monroe County OH - David R.
Porter and wife Mary E. vs Philip Shuman, heir of Jesse Shuman.)
Using the 1810 census of
Philip Shuman and the 1830 census of Sophia Shuman, the following appear to be
the family. (Please note this has not
been definitely proven.)
1. Female 1794-1800
2. Female 1794-1800
3. William 1804/07-1889 Wetzel
County WV, married Sarah Furbee

5. Jonas 1805-
6. Male
7. Mary 1814-1873 Monroe County OH married John Schoonover
8. Jesse 1815-20 - ca 1844 married Mary E. Cox
The last record I have found
so far for Philip Shuman in Monongalia County is a listing in the company of
Capt. Jesse Ice in 1814.
