DOUBLE MURDERS SHOCK COUNTY

Services were held Friday for the wife and daughter of prominent Woodsfield attorney George F.

Burkhart, victims of a double murder which shocked and sadened the county.

James Fussell, Jr., 21 of Lewisville, is being held without bond in Monroe County jail, charged with two

counts of aggravated murder in the shooting deaths of Martjorie Marie Burkhart, 53, and Erika Lynn

Burkhart Cameron, 20.

Fussell was arrested by Sheriff F.L. Sulsburger at a home on Hanson Ridge Tuesday afternoon.

The two women had been reported missing from their home on Sugartree Road Monday afternoon when

Burkhart arrived home from Coshocton where he was involved in a trail and found the women gone and his

young granddaughter alone. The family's 1974 brown compact station wagon which is believed to have

been used to transport the women, was found Monday night abandoned near Skyvue High School.

The bodies were found Tuesday morning on Pfalzgraph Ridge in Adams Township by two persons whom

Sheriff Sulsberger bad declined to identify. One of these had seen the station wagon parked in the area the

previous day and bad returned to the hillside after learning of the "kidnappings".

The 22 calibre revolver, believed to be the murder weapon, was found about 1 1/2 miles from the

abandoned car and has been sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for tests.

Burkhart had served 12 years as the Monroe County Prosecutor, but there seemed to be no connection

between this and the murders, and no motive has been established for the killings. There were no ransom

demands received, and the Sheriff said the women were killed after their abduction Monday.

A spokesman for the Sheriffs Office said no persons other than Fussell had been held in connection with

the murders, and no other persons, were being sought at the present time.

Notes for GEORGE FRANCIS BURKHART:

HAPPY RETIREMENT GEORGE F. BURKHART

A chapter in judicial history is coming to a close this week in Monroe County's historic courthouse.

Friday will mark George F. Burkhart's last day as Monroe County Common Pleas Court Judge.

Being a judge is not Burkhart's only service to residents in Monroe County. He was mayor of Woodsfield for eight years and prosecuting attorney in the county for 12 years.

The judge was also involved in civic activities through his membership in organizations such as the Woodsfield Kiwanis Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Dealing with court cases in a close-knit county, such as Monroe, wouldn't be easy, but Burkhart proved equal to the tasks. In recent years, he was called on to make rulings in the emotionally-charged teacher's strike.

On the personal side, Burkhart's faith and strength of character undoubtedly were tremendous factors in helping him overcome adversities.

The 70 year old judge's education, which was interrupted by WWII, formally began in a one-room school

house.

Burkhart himself could be called a gentleman of the old school, and gentleman is not a term used lightly in journalistic circles.

He is a man truly deserving of a happy retirement.
