Camp Sherman in Chillicothe, Ohio
World War I
Wesley Weber Schaub did his training for service at
Camp Sherman in Chillicothe, Ohio.
The war ended before he was sent overseas.*
Pictures from the collection of Sandy (Paulus) Franklin.
Jan Edith Latta told her niece (me--Betty Latta Kitchen) that her Uncle
Wes
enlisted in World I War in 1918. He was in Virginia (in Fort Myers outside
Washington D.C. ) when the armistice was announced so he did not have to go to
Europe. Aunt Jan said one of his jobs
was to remove the dead bodies of the many soldiers who died in the influenza
epidemic. He was taking one out when he
heard a moaning. Turned out that soldier
was not dead yet and back to the infirmary he went. Over 600,000 people died in that epidemic (including my
grandfather Percy Miller and his brother).
