RE: Tuttle or Tuthill:

The spelling of names back then was quite variable, but some records are perhaps more reliable than others.  The Mary TUTTLE born in the 1660's in Boston was the daughter of John TUTHILL & his wife Mary, maiden name unknown.  John is often listed as John TUTTLE, but the Bolton American Armory lists his coat of arms under TUTHILL, which was the more common spelling for the Devonshire family lines.  John's son Zechariah used the name TUTTLE, and his arms are listed that way in the Gore Roll of Arms.

Mary TUTTLE (1660s - 20-Aug-1720) married Thomas HUBBARD, by my sources; there is a marriage between a William HUBBARD and a Mary TUTTLE, but she was born in Nov-1856.  Mary Tuttle of the 1660s and Thomas Hubbard are listed as the parents of John Hubbard (married 25-Nov-1714 to Elizabeth (Peck) GOOCH) and of Zachariah Hubbard.

I'm not sure if that answers your question, exactly.  I don't have any information on the Hubbard lines to know whether there was a William Hubbard in Boston in the right timeframe.  The Mary TUTTLE who was born 28-Apr-1653 was a different family line entirely.  She was born in Rumney Marsh (now Quincy), MA, the daughter of John TUTTLE born c1625 in Ringstead, Northamptonshire, granddaughter of Richard Tuttell & Ann Taylor.  She married Caleb CARTER on 4-Dec-1678 in Charlestown, MA, and died there in 27-Feb-1727. In re: Joseph Mallory, Susan Woodruff Abbott s Families of Early Milford, Conn. 1979 in a section Unplaced Mallorys, he died 8 Aug 1785 ae 29. The reference is SM which is the Mortality List of Samuel Marshall of Milford. There are two entries above Joseph in the Abbott work, Amos Mallory drafted in the Army, and David Mallory drafted into the Army. These two brothers were sons of Moses Mallory, and served in Pond s Company formed in Milford. Capt Charles Pond was Susannah s brother.

In the Camp section of the Abbott book it merely says, under the Ezra Camp entry, that he married (2nd) Susannah Pond, bpt 18 Sep 1757 Second Church Milford, dau of Peter and Mary (Hubbard.) And, did she married (1st) Joseph Mallory? In the Pond section, Abbott does give the same info on Susannah and says she did marry (1st) Joseph Mallory and (2nd) Ezra Camp. Richard Pratt, Milford Municipal Historian, email 11 Jun 2001.

Note: Susannah Pond was likely baptized by Pastor Prudden of the Second Church (Plymouth) of Milford. Prudden was grandson of Rev Peter Prudden who founded Milford in 1639 and who was succeeded by Rev Roger Newton in 1660. Roger Newton was ancestor of Harriet L Newton who married Susannah s son Jasper Mallory.

Note: John Ponder, Ponde, or Pond, of Lavenham, kinsman and divisee of Roger Ponder, Ponde, or Pond, of Great Waldyyngfeld, 1507, will proved in Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 4th July, 1520; m. Joan Burton, widow of Adam Winthrop, the great-grandfather of Gov. John Winthrop. John and Samuel Pond, who came with Gov. Winthrop in 1630, were, probably, direct in descent from the above. The Mallory family, which came from Scotland, located in New York State, and from the original progenitor, our subject is a descendant, down through several generations. Notes on the Hobbys: William Hobby was a well-to-do merchant of Boston MA. He is mentioned in various business affairs in New England during the mid to late 1600 s. He and his family arrived in Boston in 1687 aboard the Spraker. Sons, John and Charles were ships captains in the Carribean Trade. They were socially prominent and both men sent their sons to Harvard. (Sibley s l, Harvard Graduates) John paid for his son William s tuition from money made in sugar, molasses and probably rum.

The family is probably tied to the Hobby family of London from the late 1500 s. Perhaps, the Hobbys of Bisham Abbey, who where inner courtiers during the reign of Henry VIII. One of them was sponsor of the Boy King Edward when he was inducted in the Order of the Garter. Sir Philip Hobby was a scholar and Henry s ambassador to Francis when he died in Paris. The Hobbys were also guardians for Anne of Cleves after her divorce to Henry VIII and before she returned to Germany.

Sir Charles Hobby, father of Mary Hobby, mother of Mary Hubbard, mother of Susannah Pond, was a military commander and second in command during the siege of Port Royal in Nova Scotia. It is more likely he bought his knighthood from Queen Anne though some sources say it was awarded for bravery during the earthquake while Captain of the Seaflower. The official registry says for good works in New England. (email from Dwight Marvin Dwight@marvin.cncfamily.com He is a descendant of Sir Charles brother, John Hobby.)

Hobby, Sir Charles (1665-1715):

Hobby was born at Boston; he died at London. Of Boston, Hobby was one of the few "titled natives." He had been knighted during July of 1705 for his "brave conduct in Jamaica at the time of the earthquake in 1692." In 1705, his name was advanced for the position of Governor of Massachusetts; but, likely because he was just a colonial, he was denied the post. At the time that Nicholson's took Annapolis Royal, in 1710, Sir Charles was the second in command. He was the Lieutenant-governor of Annapolis Royal, between June and October of 1711. "He left a widow but no children at his death in 1715, and his mode of life may explain the small estate remaining to his heirs." (Winsor's Memorial History of Boston (1882), vol. 2., p. 540; see at that place, on p. 541, an engraving of Hobby.)

WARS - Queen Anne's War: War of the Spanish Succession

1702-1713

To prevent the close cooperation, if not the amalgamation, of France and Spain on the death of Charles II of Spain (1 Nov. 1700), the Grand Alliance (7 Sept. 1701), the Grand Alliance (7 Sept. 1701) declared war on France (4 May 1702). In New England the war followed the pattern of the previous conflict. The Abenakis raided Main settlements (10 Aug. 1703), and destroyed Deerfield, Mass. (28-29 Feb 1704), and attacked Winter Harbor, Me. (21 Sept. 1707). To eliminate the source of Abenaki supplies and sieze control of the Acadian fisheries, a force of 500 New Englanders under Col. Benjamin Church the destroyed French villages of Minasand Beaubassin (1, 28 July 1704). After 2 unsuccessful sieges of Port Royal (1704, 1707), a third expedition under Co. Francis Nicholson and Sir Charles Hobby reduced that stronghold (16 Oct. 1710). In Newfoundland, a mixed force of French and Native Americans operating out of Placentia destroyed an English settlement at Bonavista (18-29 Aug. 1704). In Newfoundland, a mixed force of French and Native Americans operating out of Placentia destroyed an English settlement at the capture of St. Johns (21 Dec. 1708) brought the eastern shore under French control. In the South the Carolina assembly authorized (10 Sept. 1702) an expedition to seize St. Augustine before it could be reinforced by the French. A mixed force of 500 colonists and Native Americans seized, burned, and pillaged the town (Dec.) after failing to capture the fort. Another mixed force under former Gov. James Moore destroyed all but one of the 14 missions in the Apalachee country (1704), opening the road to Louisiana. But the Carolinians were unable to penetrate the Choctaw screen protecting the French Gulf settlements. By the Treaty of Utrecht (11 Apr. 1713) Newfoundland, Acadia, and Hudson Bay were ceded to Great Britain, but France retained Cape Breton Island and the islands of St. Lawrence. The failure to definethe boundaries of Acadia, Hudson Bay, and the interior of the continent left the door open to later conflict. Great Britain was also accorded (26 Mar.) the Assiento, a contract allowing the South Sea Co. (formed 1711) to import into the Spanish colonies 4,800 Africans a year for 30 years and to send 1 trading ship a year to the Spanish colonies. Morris Jeffrey and Richard. Section 12: My Mother

The oldest of my grandfather Peck s children was Betsey, who was my mother. She was born July 27th 1774, and lived at home until her marriage, just before she was twenty-one years of age, and after that a period of fifty eight years four months and thirteen days, until my father s death, she helped him make a home, and shared it with him. Afterward, she lived with, and my family two years and ten months until her death, Dec. tenth 1856. (Betsey Peck 27 Jul 1774 d 10 Dec 1856 Medina OH = 24 Jun 1795 New Haven Ct Edward Perkins 7 Feb 1769 New Haven Ct d 11 Feb 1854 Weymouth Medina OH) Edwin Perkins Jr 1888

Section 13: My Mothers Brother Roger Peck

The second of my grandfather Peck s children that lived was Roger, who only only had his father s name, but learned his trade, and when his father gave up his trade, Roger went on with it at the old stand.

He married Miss Polly Camp, but I do not know when. So far as I remember she was quite a pleasant woman, and my mother seemed to think a good deal of her. She was the mother of one son, and one daughter, who were twins, born I think in 1805 as I think they were about a year younger than myself. Aunt Polly died of consumption, about 1817, when her children were about twelve years old, I think. The boy Sidney was brought up after that by his mother s father (Ezra Camp), who lived in that part of Litchfield in Litchfield County Conn., know then, as South Farms Parish, but is now known as Morris. He married, and always staid (stayed) there, was I believe a farmer and server several terms in the State Legislature. His wife was a cousin of the late Samuel Stoddard, Esq. Of this township.

Miss Juliet E. Peck of New Haven, in a letter in the spring (1887) wrote, Mr. Sidney Peck of Litchfield died a number of years ago, and I think his sons are dead without heir, but I may be mistaken about all. The foregoing is all I know about Sidney Peck. (NOTE: Juliet E Peck 1847 Ct Teacher living in household of her uncle James G Brown ae 60 accountant CT parents CT = Harriet S__ ae 56 NY 1880 Census new Haven Ct)

As to my uncle s daugter, Susan, I hardly know where she was brought up. I think she was sometimes in one place, and sometimes another place, and after she had got to be somewhat past her teens I think she went into the neighborhood where her brother lived, and got married, there, and if she, and her husband agreed, well I think it was about the first person she ever did agree with very long.

Uncle Roger, after his wives death, became quite despondent and gloomy, and took to using strong drink too freely, and although he married again, I think his wife was no help to him, unless her drinking the liquor, prevented him from getting too much. I believe that I never called on him but once, after his second marriage, and only for a short time then, and I do not know that my father or mother ever visited him after that marriage. I do not know how long he lived or when he died. Edwin Perkins Jr 1888

The Parish of Bocking is bounded on the south by that of Braintree. It is in this parish, Mr Thomas Hooker, future founder of Harford, Ct, often preached during his ministry in Essex, and among the inhabitants of Braintree were Mr William Wadsworth, Mr John Talcot, and the families that came to New England on The Lion in the summer of 1632, and accompanied Mr Hooker to Hartford 1636. The parish registers of St Michael s at Braintree prior to 1660 have been lost . (Though both attended Cambridge, it is unlikely Rev RogerNewton was a brother to Sir Issac Newton; perhaps an uncle. Several texts refer to the descendants of Roger Newton as a close relation to Sir Isaac Newton.. Sir Isaac s father was Isaac Newton and Sir Isaac was born Christmas Day, 1642 Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England. Rev Roger Newton born c 1610, was son of Samuel Newton b c 1595 England. It is possible that Samuel and Isaac Newton Sr were related but there is no evidence for that. Indeed, the ancestor s of Sir Isaac were unclear even to Newton himself. Though he at one time presented his own genealogy, in later years had doubts and represented that he was of a Scotish family though the elder of that family did not acknowledge Sir Isaac s letter of inquiry, evidently thinking it was from a lost relative seeking a share in the family estate, when, indeed, the opposite was probably true that it was Sir Isaac inquiring after his relatives should they need his help)

Samuel Newton 20 Oct 1646, son of Rev Roger Newton and Mary Hooker, was very active in town affaird, representing Milford fifteen sessions in the general court, and was a famous Indian fighter in the Milford Militia in all the Indian wars, having the rank of captain.

I am inclined to believe that Jasper Mallory and Roger Newton moved to Ohio sooner rather than later. David Shepard McIntire moved his family up Captina Creek from Powhattan Pt having arrived from Wheeling West Virginia. (Fort Henry is given as his birthplace 1773 the Fort was built at the direction of his father-in-law, Col David Shepard, in 1774.) Mallory and Newton ran flatboats on the Ohio. McIntire moved his family by flatboat. David Shepard s daughter, Jane, married Jasper s son, Nelson Newton Mallory. I made his cake with chickens and rabbits, as it is so near Easter. William runs and plays until he is so tired at night he cries. Uncle Jasper died last night. Damaris Hopkins was sister of Oceanus, only child born on the Mayflower. Another sister (half) was Constance Hopkins who married Nicholas Snow who came 1623 on the Anne. A double descendant of Nicholas Snow was Jane Snow = William Nobles Mallory) Stephen Hopkins was the only passenger on the Mayflower who had been to the New World. In 1609, he was aboard the Sea Venture (Sea Adventure) (Capt George Somer) when it ran aground on Bermuda while a part of a nine-ship floatilla to Jamestown, Virginia with the first colonists. A fierce storm forced the ship to wreck on Bermuda. The crew built two ships out of native cedar and sailed to Virginia in the spring only to find 50 survivors out of the 150 who had safely landed. The survivors were starving and the little food the crew had brought from Bermuda (wild pigs and bananas) was enough to keep the colonists alive until a supply ship arrived. William Shakespeare wrote about the storm in his work, The Tempest, based on an account by a similar name by William Strachey, the most literate colonist. Stephen Hopkins was lucky to have survived the storm and his trial for mutany at which he was found guilty and sentenced to hang. He pleaded for mercy on account of his wife and children in England and was spared and sent back to England. He was listed as a Clarke among the colonists and was one of the most pious and educated in the Bible. The issue a mutany was more of a religious/political conflict. Hopkins contended that as the ship was wrecked, the authority of the Capt did not extend to the survivors on shore. He was not listed among the colonists of Virginia, indicating the he was probably sent back to England on the first available ship. Undaunted by his misadventure, he joined the passengers of the Mayflower in 1620 and returned to the New World.

Note: Jasper s farm is now known as the Terl-Hark Farm, south of the former Berlin School and the former Berlin Methodist Church. Page 174 History of Stephenson Co. South of the church was the site of an early store run by Jasper Mallory on his farm in Section 17. He and his wife, a girl reared by Josiah Willard, who was the father of Frances E Willard, temperance lecturer and author, brought a supply of goods in their covered wagon with which to stock the shelves.

Freeport Weekly Democrat Davis, April 12, 1891 The contract for building the creamery has been let to Daniel Wenzel and work will begin at once. Jasper Mallory, of Freeport, has rented the building and will place in the factory the most improved machinery. Jasper Mallory was the first cheesemaker in Davis IL.

He was born Jasper Mallory Daniels on May 12, 1912, in Vancouver, named for his father, who had left the United States with his brother Henry, after deserting from the American military. While Mallory did not recall any specific stories regarding their arrival in Canada, his father s and uncle s decision to head north speaks of a fundamental unwillingness to participate in organized violence that would also characterize the life of the younger Jasper Mallory Daniels. Throughout his early life, he was called Mallory, or Mal.

Mallory spent is earliest years living at Siwash Creek, at the head of Powell Lake, where his family homesteaded. On a bare, stump-strewn flat beside the waters of Powell Lake, they built a sturdy log home with a fieldstone fireplace, encircled by a picket fence. Bushes thick with berries grew on the hillsides and among the charred stumps that surrounded their carefully tended garden. His father worked at a variety of jobs on the lake. Even though he worked with his hands, Jasper was a gentleman, who educated himself by reading widely, and was always well-dressed, wherever he went. Mallory was six when the First World War ended .

Gladys Nightingale was 37 when she met Mallory Daniels. Born April 22, 1907 in Woodstock Ontario, she was raised as the only child of Charles Nightingale, a violinist and piano player .she was a member of the June Roper Dancers she trained and performed, and during the 1920 s participated in Vancouver s well-known Theatre Under the Stars... The Stotser Family came from Berne Switzerland to the US in 1827; stopping first in Philadelphia for a short time, and then walking, carrying their belongings to Monroe Co Ohio. (About eight years earlier, another group had come from Berne Switzerland and eventually settled in Belmont and Monroe Counties. It is likely the Stotsers were joining that group.) John (Johannes) Stotser met Hannah Hathaway, sister of Thomas Hathaway, in Monroe Co. However, they were married 5 Oct 1837 in Wisconsin by James Blair, a relative of Hannah s. They returned to Monroe Co. and were living there when Mary Jane was born in 1838 and Elizabeth in 1840 (Elizabeth married DK Wilkinson and had Cora Alice who married Josiah Willard Mallory) It is said they went to Vermillion Co IN (Vermilion co IL?) for a short time and laster went to Stephenson Co IL where seven more children were born. While in IL, father Jacob Stotser died and daughter Sara also died. Both were buried at Ridott, IL. Jacob s wife then went to live with her daughter, Mary in Wisconsin. She (Mary) was married to William Sprowls. John and Hannah moved to Etna Twp, Hardin Co IA in 1857 where Mahala 1858, Charles 1860, and George 1862 were born. Sharon Morgan

The Wilkinson Family came from England and settled in Bennington County, Vt in Green Mountains before the American Revolution. The old farm is described as being way up a narrow canyon with very steep sides. The farmstead sat on two small plateaus in the canyon and there was a family cemetery on a steep slope.

Jennette (Wilkinson) (sister of DK) d 1900 never married and was quoted as being much a happier as spinster than married to a Green Mountain boy. Dilliston Kenyon DK Wilkinson was born Nov 1835 at the family farm ___Vermont. He broke his hip sliding down a hill as a child. He was partially crippled the rest of his life and this kept him out of the Civil War. He came to Iowa before the War and bought a farm southeast of Iowa Falls. DK was a carpenter and built a sawmill near Hazen Green and built various structures in Hardin City, Eagle City and Robertson. Hardin City on the Iowa River, had a sawmill, flour mill, church, school, saloons, livery stables, store and a number of residences. It was predicted to grow into a fair size town. Today it is difficult to find more than a few old stone foundations.

Roberston had most of the expectations of Hardin City plus a Burlington Railroad depot, a grain elevator, stockyard, post office, school and the First Church of Christ.

In 1883, following the death of his mother, DK went to Vermont to take careof family business and spent the entire winter.

In 1860 s and 70 s, a group called the Rangebarger Gang ran wild thru central Iowa. They were responsible for several murders, cattle rustling, and horse thievery.

DK was head of the KKK in that area and his followers acted as vigilantes in the name of law and order. They found the gang using several caves along the Iowa River as hideouts and places to pen up stolen animals. DK s night riders track them down and hung the gang. I used to date a girl whose great grandfather (William Johns) was hung by my great-grandfather. The Rangebargers were documented in a book titled Vandermark s Folly by Herbert Quick. The two branches of the KKK were never the hate group that exised in the South after the Civil War. James Ernest Bird

Herbert Quick was born in 1861 in a "little shanty" close to the border between Grundy and Hardin counties in Iowa and grew up on a farm in Grundy county. Somewhat crippled by polio at an early age, he became a school teacher in his teens and remained one until he gained admission to the Iowa bar after reading law for several years in the office of an attorney in Mason City. Then followed fifteen years of legal practice in Sioux City, beginning in 1890. During this period Quick energetically prosecuted boodlers and served for two years as the reform mayor of the city. But from an early age he had dreamed of being a writer: "I cannot remember when things that I saw and experienced did not appeal to me as the stuff of writing."[2] One of his close friends in Sioux City would recall Quick's habit of recording stories, expressions and phrases that he hoped to use in fiction.[3] In 1901, at the age of forty, he published his first book, a vol ume of fairy tales for children. In the same year he submitted a poem to The Century Magazine about the prairie fires and nature life on the Iowa prairie that he had known as a boy; the editor accepted it with an encouraging note. These events confinned Quick's appetite for writing, and after he had published Double Trouble, which he later called his "first really successful novel," he abandoned the law in 1905 and became a professional writer. Friends clucked, he recalled, and said, Poor old Quick! The old simpleton will starve surely now! And he had a fairly good law practice!"[4]

Josiah Willard Mallory (My Grandfather) was a handsome man, proud and idealistic to the end of his days. He was a Scot (edit note: Well, they thought they were Scottish, but that has yet to be proved.) and Protestant and did not like to be considered Irish. In his youth the Irish were the big city and railroad work gangs. He was 5 ll tall, slender and wiry, had brown hair and piercing blue eyes. He liked to box and I can remember him at age 70 showing some of our young men in the cornpicking crew how to handle their dukes. Robert Nelson (grandson by daughter Bertha Bess) was proud of Grandpa Joe fro trying to join the US Army in WWI at the age of 56. When the Army wouldn t take him, he joined the Minnesota National Guard and fought forest fires during the war instead of the Germans.

Cora was 5 6 with snappy brown eyes. She was slender and always wore her hair pulled into a tight bun. Losing the farm in the depression meant that for the rest of their lives she and Grandpa lived in virtual poverty, dependent on their children for their livelihood. They were both proud people who came from well-to-do families. Joyce Mallory Cramer (granddaughter by Theodore Kenyon Mallory) said that Grandpa had perfect and imperfect grandchildren. Don Mallory was always held up to be perfect when I was small. What I didn t know was that when she stayed with Uncle Perl and Aunt Mary, I was Mr Perfect when she talked to Don! She had a sardonic humor and a sharp tongue. The last ten years of her life she was blind and liked to have someone sit and talk with her. She was especially interested in my experiences in World War II.

After school and after the outside chores were done, Grandma always had my sister, Ruthmary, and I making crocheted rugs. We would sit and talk and hear her version of old stories which were never quite as flambouyant as Grandpa s. I used to think she was part Indian because of the way she could pick all sorts of wild berries (elderberries, June berries, gooseberries, mulberries) and make jams and jellies and shortcakes. She knew about mushrooms, too.

Grandma played the organ and piano in church. She and Granpa both sang well. She loved to read, she loved her flower garden and she baked wonderful bread and was an excellent seamstress. Being blind took away some of the best things in life.

In 1936, Dad and I went up to Minnesota and brough Grandpa back to Iowa. He was very ill with what was called dropsy (edema) and Dad and uncle Gus Nelson were afraid he might die on the ride back. One day my folks went to town and Grandpa died while they were gone. I straightened his arms, folded his hands, closed his eyelids and kissed his brow. I was 14 and didn t know what else to do. Grandma died ten years later at Uncle Perl s house near Stark City MO. They are buried at Hazelgreen Cemetery near our farm in Iowa and next to DK and Elizabeth Wilkinson.

Dad and I (Frank Bird) went over to see a neighbor named Joe Abbas. He had made some good home brew and wanted us to try it. When grandpa heard about it, he stormed about hoping never to have a grandson who would drink beer. When a group of us went watermelon stealing in Clyde Huse s cornfield, Grandpa was upset about a grandson who would steal watermelons! He believed in the straight and narrow and that s how he and Grandma lived their lives and that is the code the passed on to us.

They had six children. Archie and Harold died as small babies. We come now to my mother s generation. A family history gets to be a lot of rememberances and we may see these differently. My memories are happy ones. The depression was tough but we ate well and came thru with the attitude of this too will pass! .

.Perl and Mary Mallory lived near Zimmerman, Minnesota until the mid 1930 s and then went to a farm near Stark City, Missouri. It was fun as a child riding up highway 65. We always got a little money to spend in Albert Lea (Albert Lea Freeborn MN) and stopped at a schoolyard for a picnic and to use the pump for water. In early evening, we would arrive at Uncle Perl s place, with all the kids too excited to sleep. We got to sleep in the haymow and go swimming in several of Minnesota s 10,000 lakes. Those were the depression days. No one had much money, but we learned how to lived and enjoy what we had. One timePerl and Mary came visiting in their big Dodge with wide running boards and they parked by the chicken house. I was only three, but have a clear memory of the car and that visit. There was a family joke about Mary that she wrote more on a post card than anyone we ever knew. In her later years, living with Beth and Ed, she used to write me about a day of gardening in early spring---several pages that she made fascinating by the detail and love she gave the plants. I will never forget Aunt Mary s canned peaches when I visited them in Stark City. Picked ripe and packed ripe. If you ve experienced the poor excuse for peaches called yellow cling, you would truly have appreciated Aunt Mary s. Uncle Perl and I had a lot of affinity. The photo of us on the Iowa farm even makes us look alike. Perl had the Mallory legacy, the ability to sit and visit for hours. Grandpa Joe gave it to all of us! Ted and Dora Mallory also lived in the Zimmerman, Minnesota area. The visits to Minnesota in our old Overland sedan were to see all the relatives. The depression cost Ted and Dora, Perl and Mary and Grandpa and Grandma their farms. Ted had a job at Robbinsdale as overseer of a Catholic Mission Farm. There was a Father Shaughnessy (Neil Shaughnessy was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Zimmerman and not a Catholic.) who use to take Grandma riding around Minneapolis and St Paul at speeds she shuddered about. Her anti-Catholic upbringing was soon overcome by actually getting to know people on the farm. I remember going there and seeing a huge pile of rotten rutabagas and never cared much for them after that. The farm workers were poor men picked off the city streets and given food, shelter and work. Uncle Ted told me some of them stole all the vanilla extract from the kitchen and even mixed fly spray from the dairy barns with orange juice to get something to drink! Robbinsdale is famous for the Fawcett Publishing Company noted for the Cap n Billy s Whiz Bang, a magazine full of racy jokes and cartoons.

They came down to Iowa and Ted worked for my Dad and others. They lived on our farm for a while then in Eagle City. Then they moved to Rainier, Oregon, bought a tree farm and Uncle Ted worked in a sawmill during the war. (Note: Rainier is located at the confluence of the Cowlitz and Columbia Rivers. Longbell Lumber Company was the largest sawmill in the area, across the Columbia in Longview, WA. Rainier is built on the side of a hill and has very little area for industry.) When I worked on the Boeing 747 project in Portland, I saw them one Sunday, the both had terrible colds. I fixed some soup for them and made them each a hot toddy. Now, neither of them approved of alcohol, so I explained that this was medicinal. I left nearly a bottle of whiskey and the toddy recipe with them. On the next weekend, Aunt Dora told me they had used it all up and wondered if I could get some more of the toddy medicine because the used it all.

Pat and all our children go to know them and to know Willard and Joyce s family. Patrick stayed with Ted and Dora several months and worked well with Ted. They both liked to plan a job for several days before beginning. The Douglas firs on the property were magnificent and so were the mountains all around. Patrick and I were always happy to pick blackberries and be rewarded with Aunt Dora s good pies . by Ernest James Bird b 5 Aug 1921, son of Olive Rose Mallory and Frank Bird.

From Larry Rea a historian and researcher from Rainier OR:

When I was growing up I would go to the Mallory place at Halloween and trick or treat. My grandparents lived adjacent to them for some time. Up the road a mile or two was a place everyone called the Bird Place, after the family that lived there probably around 1930. I don t know what happened to them but the house was vacant when I was young and several other families lived there after that. The Cramer family lived across from us. I remember a large barn that sat adjacent to the road. Their house was up the hill a way from the road. Actually, all of these places were off the county road some distance. I think the original road followed closer to the hillside to avoid the flood plain of the creek. Then, as road building became a science, the roadway followed the creek and left some of the houses stranded. No doubt everyone enjoyed being some distance from the gravel road because of the clouds of dust raised by passing traffic. Today it is paved, of course. Larry Rea 24 Jul 2002

I never knew Edwin Grant Mallory, but enjoyed knowing his wife, Aunt Ida, many years. The photo of her shows a woman of wit and wisdom and substance, exactly what she was. She had two daughters, Elsie, who married Herbert Coon and lived in Freeport, Illinois, and Faerie, who married Robert Engle and lived in Chicago. Ida lived with Elsie and Herb most of the time and with Faerie and Bob occasionally. During World War II, Ida took it on herself to write to all her young relatives in service and her letters sparkled and always carried a subtle challenge to do one s best.

One time I jumped off the train too soon and found myself two miles from Freeport at 2 am on a winter morning. I knocked on the Coon s door at 4 am and ida answered the door, and figuring that I was starving after my cold walk, fried six eggs and a pound of bacon to tide me over until breakfast. The Coons lived in a large three story house which resembled Grand Central Station when all the family were there. When the Coons came to see us, we cranked up a lot of home made ice cream and fried a lot of chicken. Bob and Faerie came with a 1932 LaSalle with poles over the seats for a sleeping platform.

The Coons had five children: Dorothy was married to Dale Fair, her father s partner in the appliance business. Ruth was a widow who remarried in the mid-forties and spent time in Kenya and Nigeria. Lois married Dr Elwood Kortemeier. She reminded me of Gilda Radner of Saturday Night Live always a lot of fun. She asked Aunt Ida why she pulled the shades down in her bedroom before she turne off the light. Ida told her she didn t want any peeping Toms to be disappointed. (11) Robert E Coon Freeport, Illinois = Nancy____

Bob Coon was a Navy pilot who went in the South Pacific and was in the water 12 hours before being picked up. He and his wife Nancy, lived at Cedarville IL near Freeport in the Jane Addams family home. Jane Addams was the founder of the Hull House in Chicago, where young women who needed help were given good care. The old house in Cedarville was brick and stone with fireplaces and copper kettles on cranes, spinning wheels on looms, hand woven rugs. The old stone barn was was also picturesque, with a 16 foot in diameter millstone leaning against the end wall. The old homestead was kept up by Bob and Nancy, in the condition of Jane Adams time. There were able to live there, rent free, for taking care of the property and showing it to the public for limited hours on weekends. The State Historical Society owned it. by Ernest James Bird b 5 Aug 1921, son of Olive Rose Mallory and Frank Bird

Bob Engle was a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and Faerie taught some classes there also. Bob was a bit pompous and dignified. We shared an aromatic experience. At a family picnic he took to the outhouse. Our combined weight broke the floor and we sunk up to our waists in (you know what.) There was a lot of commotion and I think my Mom and Dad gave some though to---should they clean me or raise another boy. The experience gave a cerain kind of outlook on life and Bob never seemed to be quite the dignified professor after that! I didn t know their son, Richard, very well, but Ray and I spent a week fishing with Ruth Conn in 1947 just before he went to the US Naval Academy at Annopolis, Maryland. Ray went into the submarine service and was an officer on the atomic sub Nautilus when it made the trip under the ice at the North Pole. He retired as a Rear Admiral and was the commanding officer for the Guam Naval Base.

When my daughter, Suzanna, went to Chicago to enroll in the University Divinity school, Faerie walked her into the office of the dean of religious studies, Martin Marty, and told him she wanted to take the PhD curriculum and needed a job and a place to live. Suzanna got her PhD in Religious History and Philosophy. She worked at the University Press and edited and typed the Nobel winning thesis, submitted by Milton Friedmann. by Ernest James Bird b 5 Aug 1921, son of Olive Rose Mallory and Frank Bird. Suzanna mentioned above is Deborah Suzanne Bird b 1951.

...Was canned from subs, my first love, because I was one of the 36 of us the day after Raving Ray Engle said none could have them. Spent the last years of my Navy career as a Rickover reject aboard tenders and then got out. Doug Sharkey Chartier

Freeport Daily Bulletin 2 Jan 1891 A very quiet wedding was solemnized at the home of Mr. Mallory, the creamery man, Wednesday night. The contracting parties were Miss Romenza Mallory and Wm N Greeley, of Stockton. Rev. Harkness of the Embury Church tied the knot in the presence of a few friends and relatives. After the ceremony a short reception was tendered to Mr & Mrs Greeley, the newly married couple are well and favorably known to many Freeport people. Who wish them a safe voyage throught this world. They will make their home in Stockton.

Romanza (Maggie) Greeley came to Grandpa and Grandma s place when I was there. She was an old lady then. Jasper Bobb Mallory was a railroad conductor from Freeport, Illinois, a portly man who always wore a dark blue suit and had the requisite watch with gold chain across his vest. He also came to our farm several times over the years. We enjoyed his visits. He was hale and hearty and could tell wonderful stories. I never saw his wife, Alice. (Rowray) We have seen Catherine spelled with a K also so we don't know which way she spelled it.   My father is, Ralph Emerson Wickwire born in 1890 in Lead City, South Dakota, son of LeslieA. Wickwire and (Katie) Catherine Rorer. In Genealogy of the Wickare Family on page 203 section 163 it gives information on Leslie and Katie under his fathers name Nathan Orville Wickwire. I don't have any further information other than to verify that on my fathers marriage certificate that Leslie and Katie were in fact married.   I do know that may father, Ralph, was born in Lead City, South Dakota so Leslie and Katie lived there for a time. The story as I know it was that they met in the Freeport area married then moved to South Dakota where the children were born. My father, Ralph, was the last of the children. The family moved back to the Freeport, Illinois area after my father s birth, but I don't know what year that was or how many of the children came with. When Mother (Carrie Hathaway) was seven and Aunt Ella was eleven their mother, Susan (Rowray) passed away. (1874) They had adored her and their lives were never the same again. Their father (Thomas Hathaway) left the five children with his parents, Thomas Sr and Sarah (Brown), and went West and traveled for years.

Grandfather (Thomas) Hathaway was a Seventh Day Adventist minister and he preached to the people as he traveled about the country. He came as far west as Oregon during his travels and visited in most of the western states. He carried a muzzle-loader shotgun with which he hunted. He traveled by raft on the rivers and at times traded with the Indians. He brought back Indian craftworkand he gave Mother (Carrie Needham) a pair of buckskin beaded mocaasins (sic) and a beautiful beaded purse which are still among the family keepsakes. Later in his travels he went to Arkansas and Oklahoma, including the Ozark mountain region. After Euell (Needham) was a young boy Granfather gave him the shotgun which Euell used for years to hunt with.

After Grandfather (Thomas) Hathaway grew older he quit traveling and lived with his children s families. He was loved by all of them and was always welcome in their homes. He helped Mother (Carrie Needham) with the babies and work around the home. She had a rocking cradle for her babies and Grandpa would set by the hour, rocking with his foot and singing to the babies. He also lived with Uncle Charley (Hathaway) and Aunt Ada in Iantha, Mo., and helped take care of their youngest children. Grandfather had a Civil War pension of $12 a month and he bought all of Lucy s(Needham) baby layette. He was an inventor and made lots of models. He sold an invention of a well-driller when he was a young man and it was still in use in Missouri when he died. He died at Uncle Zach s home in the summer of 1910 and was buried at Media, Illinois. Florence Serena Needham

Thomas divorced Catherine. They were married March 30, 1878. The plaintiff further complains that the said defendant after leaving him has become a notorious public prostitute, and has been the inmate of Houses of ill-fame at Nevada and other places and that she was at Nevada in May and June 1881 and was the inmate of a House of Ill-fame kept by one A. Brely and was there guilty of adultery and protitution with said Brely and other men to this Pltff unknown. The divorce was granted on November 21, 1881

The only one I have is for Wilmer which is in KS, I would think they were all born there. My aunt mentioned several times that the kids came to visit when she lived in Seldon. The family history she wrote down from the time my grandmother married has been helpful, yet frustrating as well. She would write Aunt Lou, Warden, Elma, Lela, Ila visited. That s all fine and well but who are they? She knew who they are so she didn t write who they were related to and how. It s taken several years to track down that these were Daniel M s kids. Note: Jacob Tschappat was early settler in Monroe Co. In april, 1819, ten German and Swiss families embarked on a flatboat on the Aar River at Berne under the leadership of Jacob Tisher. They descended the Aar River to the Rhine and continued to the city of Antwerp where they boarded a French ship, Eugenius, for New York. After traveling 48 days, they landed at Amboy, New Jersey, where they purchased teams with six of the families starting to travel to Wheeling, West Virginia. The little colony now consisted of Father Jacob Tisher, Abraham Tisher, Jacob Tschappat, Daniel Franhauser, Nichols Frankhauser, Jacob Marit (together with their families) and Jacob Nisperli, single. After a tedious journey, they reached Wheeling and again embarked on a flatboat, their destination being the Great Kanawa River.

Upon landing at the mouth of Captina Creek, they found two Pennsylvannia Germans, George Goetz and Henry Sweppe, who told them that there was plenty of Government land in Monroe County. Part of the colony was induced to stay. Housing room was not available for everyone.

On September 15, Father Tisher and part of his little band continued further down the River to Bare s landing, a distance of seventeen miles. Jacob Bare, an early settler from Maryland, could speak German and received them kindly, persuading them to settle there. Thus, the two bands, at the same time, began the first German-Swiss settlements in Monroe County, one party being in Switzerland Twp and the other in Ohio Twp.

On the Hill in Salem Twp (now Switzerland Twp), Daniel Mallett built a log cabin. This improvement was purchased by Jacob Tschappat, Sr, who moved the same fall. The other band settled on Congressional land the following spring .. History of Monroe Co Ohio
