Close-up
of the Clock Works Universal Joints
A universal joint is located between the
clock drive gear and the rod that transmits the motion to the clock hands. The
universal joint allows for any misalignment that may exist in the rod or any other
component. These universal joints flex only slightly, if at all, and protect
the clock works from forces that would cause wear. Undoubtedly, these joints
are major factors in extending the life of such a clock.
