BIOSKETCH OF LOUISA ELLEN
(LATTA) MATZ (30 Mar 1871 - Dec 1949)
By Betty Latta Kitchen
The Morris family Bible gives 187l as Louisa's year
of birth. According to her brother David, it was Louisa that raised him. Louisa
always liked to dress up. Her hair was light brown with a lot of sheen. She was tall--about 5'8" and was a real
fashion plate. Betty Latta Kitchen has a newspaper article that describes a
party she helped hostess for her sister's birthday (Mary Bell's). It must have
been close to l899 or l900 because her brother Tom and his wife were listed
among the many guests. All the gifts were also listed. There was a footnote at
the bottom of the article about current happenings in the county which included
Louisa and Mary Bell's trip to Barnesville.
Louisa (age 30) married Chris Matz (age 37) on July
l6, 1901 [Cochran: Monroe Co., Ohio, Marriages, l867-l9l7]. Hogue's Monroe
County Marriages included the parents:
Lewis and Christina
(Meckling) Matz
John and Mary J. (Morris)
Latta
Louisa had her children keep in contact with their
grandmother Mary Latta in Woodsfield. Grandma kept over l00 postcards sent to
her from her family. Aunt Jan (Latta)
told me that Aunt Lou always said Monroe County was such a hard place to live.
Aunt Lou said that "even the horses had to work hard." She was glad
to move to Ashland.
