Found -- A LOST CEMETERY, but what is the name

and who is buried there???

You may be able to help solve a mystery that is now confronting the Monroe County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society (MCC of OGS)

The other day a neighbor took me to a cemetery on Pea Vine Ridge in Green Township, Monroe County, Ohio. The MCC of OGS had no previous record of this cemetery in their extensive list of cemeteries in Monroe County. So, at the moment, we still do not know the name of the cemetery of who is buried there. The owners of the land on which the cemetery is located cut down the overgrowth of trees and cleared the area last year. But by this year, the weeds and brush have again grown up enough to make a search for stones extremely difficult. I was able to see a couple of stones but couldn't get to them.

One stone that I did manage to read was Abraham Matthess died Sep 25, 1858. The stone had sunken into the ground making the date of death difficult to read but 1858 is what it looked like. Another head-stone read William H. son of -----. I couldn't get close enough to make out the rest of the inscription. The owner of the land said that they had found about 20 stones last year. It is not clear whether that count might have included foot-stone. From my discussion with the land owner, it did not sound like many of the head-stones are legible.

The cemetery is on land that was formerly known as the Straight property. It is now owned by the Kerns family.

If you recognize any of these names or know anything about this cemetery, especially the cemetery name, would you please pass your information along to Karen Romick, at one of the following addresses: e-mail at Karen Romick or by letter at postal address MCC of OGS, P.O.
