TOBACCO PACKING HOUSE IN LEWISVILLE, OHIO
Tobacco was the original industry of
Lewisville. Early settlers in the area
raised tobacco as a "cash crop" which led to the growth of
Lewisville. To facilitate the trade,
tobacco packing houses were established.
They would buy tobacco from the farmers and pack it for transport and
sale to the consuming markets. The
first packing house in Lewisville is long gone. The photo above is the second packing house in Lewisville. It was constructed and owned by John
Christman of Calais, OH. The building
still stands and is used as farmers' feed and supply store. It carries the faded sign, "Lewisville
Hardware." It is located one block from the intersection of Ohio Routes 78
and 145 on south Route 145. It is
directly across the street from Egger Hardware store.
