Ruth Genevieve (Walker) Latta (1932-1985)
and her niece, Betty Jane Latta
my wedding day, August 28, 1965
Trinity Brethren Church, Canton, Ohio
My Aunt Ruth
made this veil for my wedding.
Aunt Ruth
enjoyed sewing and doing crafts. When I
was a little girl, she made the clothes for this cowboy storybook doll for
me. And she made chaps for me to wear
as well. I did love to play cowboys and
Indians with my cousins. I was always
Roy Rogers with a well-used cap pistol.
(Loved the smell of those caps apopping too!)
Aunt Ruth and
her husband my Uncle Zip (Zelvon Latta) had two looms and liked to weave. They purchased the first loom, and then
Uncle Zip used it as a model and constructed a better loom. This is the shawl she handwove for my
grandmother, Effie Jane (Schaub) Latta:
Below are the
placemats that she and Uncle Zip made for us as a wedding gift. There were four in the set plus a thicker
one (the one at the top) that incorporated plastic with the fabric to make it
thicker to be used as a mat for under hot dishes on the table. (It is now the year 2017, and we still
have them.)
In the late
1960s when Don and I built our home at 3505 East Aurora Road in Twinsburg,
Ohio, Aunt Ruth drove up to help us paint the interior walls.
(Thank you,
Aunt Ruth.)
