Me, Betty Jane Latta
and my mother
Mary Elizabeth (Miller) Latta
my wedding day, August 28, 1965
Trinity Brethren Church, Canton, Ohio
My mother, Mary
Elizabeth (Miller) Latta made this wedding dress for me. She made most of my clothes as I was growing
up. In those days girls were not
allowed to wear long pants or jeans to school.
We had to wear dresses or skirts and always had to wear shorts under
them in case one of the boys would play "wash day" at recess and
flick up your skirt.
Some of my
clothes were made from feed sacks from Daddy's mill (Latta Brothers in
Robertsville, Ohio). At that time the
feed sacks came in many cotton prints.
Of course, for this, my wedding dress, Mom did not resort to the feed
sacks.
Although Daddy
didn't make the wedding dress, he was instrumental in the building of this
church, the Trinity Brethren Church on 55th Street in Canton, Ohio. We went to church Sunday mornings, Sunday
evenings, and sometimes on Wednesday evenings too. He was also a deacon at the church.
