Dr. J. W. Norris
J. W. Norris was born in Monroe County in 1870 on a farm about 2 miles from
Woodsfield, Ohio. At the age of 18 he taught
school for 4 years. He attended
Starling Medical College at Columbus, Ohio and upon graduation set up his
practice in 1890 in Belmont County.
After 3 years he moved his practice to Woodsfield and became one of the
County s leading physicians and surgeons.
In addition to his medical practice, he was a successful oil
operator. He was one of the organizers,
the first Vice President and the largest stockholder of the First National Bank
in Woodsfield. He was the President and
Manager of the Monroe Brick Company. He
was the largest individual holder of real estate in Woodsfield. On July 12, 1905 Dr. Norris married Miss
Zula Taylor of Nobel County.
