Dr. J. R. Parry was born in Washington County, PA. He received his literary training at Monongahela College situated at Jefferson, Greene County, PA. He is a graduate of the old Ohio Medical College, Cincinnati, Ohio and took post graduate courses at New York Polyclinic in the years 1892 1898. He began his practice in Monroe County about 1876. For 16 years of that time he was associated with Dr. T. H. Armstrong under the firm name of Armstrong and Parry. His offices were located in the New Bank building of the Monroe Bank. Dr. Parry s home is now the Parry Museum under the administration of the Monroe County Historical Society.
