The Eagle Hotel and the A.J. Staudt Saloon

Two businesses located on Paul Street are represented in this photo. At the left of the photo with a man seated on the porch is the A. J. Staudt Saloon. It was established in 1901 by A. J. Staudt, son of Jacob Staudt. In addtion to the saloon, Mr Staudt was also the wholesaler for the Belmont Brewing Company of Martins Ferry.

To the right of the Saloon is the Eagle Hotel, one of the oldest hotels in Woodsfield. It was established about 1880 by George Burkhart who operated it until 1898. Between 1898 and 1902 it was operated by F. Haren & Son. After 1902 it came under the operation of Ben Haren. The building had 30 rooms, bath hot and cold water, gas and electric lights. Rooms were rented for a dollar a day.
