Evelyn Goodhart

LETTERS

Last week I asked Evelyn's niece, Mary Anne Stiles, if was okay to post Evelyn's letters here. She gave the okay and said: " Yes, please feel free to include Aunt Weenie's letter. I have also been enlightened by the info on places she had lived after her mother died.  She moved to Pittsburgh when I was a little girl,  and I have wonderful memories of visiting her and doing so many fun things."

Evelyn shared a little about her family with me in 2009, shortly before her death. I surely wish I had met her earlier in both our lives. My friend Helen Weiss first told me about Evelyn in 2007:

from Helen Weiss, 2007:

I remember Howard very well and I still keep in contact with his daughter Evelyn Goodhart b. 23 Sep 1917, who lives in Pa. She is 87 and lives next door to her niece.

from Evelyn, January, 2009:

"My mother Josie Everett Goodhart died in 1925 after having cancer. That put me in care of many relatives. I lived with Uncle John in Calais, OH, Grandma Sarah & Grandpa Charles Everett & Margaret & George Atkinson in Batesville, OH. Grandma & Grandpa moved to Batesville from Calais, OH. Mom's sister Ada moved to Bridgeport OH where I lived with her and my sister & her daughter in the winter then my summers with other relatives. Oh well! I turned out OK. I was living in Washington DC when the second World War began. I left there because it was below zero, and my health did not permit it. My sister was married then. I went to her farm, where I had lived for some time. From there I went to Greensburg, Pa for 3 months then to Pittsburgh where I was for many years and where I was when I had my stroke in 2002. My niece Mary Anne (Gert's daughter) moved me nearer her farm where I now live, and at 91 I won't move I'm sure."

from Evelyn, February, 2009:

"Grandpa & Grandma Everett are buried beside Dad and Mom, Howard & Josie Goodhart, in the large graveyard in Cambridge,Oh. Oh yes! I will be too, I hope. My stone date has to be changed, it's in 19's."

"I lived at Dean's first home for almost 3 years after I had my stroke. I believe I was 88 yrs old at that time. I am 91 yrs. old now. Never thought I'd last that long. I live at Dean's farm, one mile from Dilltown at this time. Only God knows how much longer I'll be there."

"We had almost 20 inches of snow here in the mountains and very cold, below zero some nights."
