Fire at Sardis

Source: Monroe Gazette; December 12, 1895

The Wheeling Register of last Friday tells of quite a fire at Sardis last week as follows: A very destructive fire broke out a few minutes before 8 o'clock Wednesday evening in the rear end of the Sardis Cash Store. The fire when first seen was making its way between the dwelling of A. H. Lowe and the store, but by the aid of the Bucket Brigade it was soon put out. At 5 o'clock this morning the citizens were again awakened by the cry of fire in the lower part of town, it being the grocery and dwelling house of E. C. Frey's, which was burned in a very short time; also the dwelling and cigar shop occupied by C.K. and E. H. Gano, which was totally destroyed and with no insurance. Loss to E. C. Frey, $2,500, with $1,800 insurance. The dwelling owned by Andy Deiter, was burned considerably, and the house owned by J. H. Bowen was left in a dilapidated condition. The first is of doubtful origin, but the most reasonable theory is that it caught from the gas which was burning in the store.
