George F. Burkhart was born December 16, 1839 in Bobenthal, Germany, which is a small village in the Hart Mountains of West Germany. George was the son of Frederick J. Burkhart and Margaret Ottilla Burkhart, and immigrated April 22, 1843, with his parents and siblings on the Duchess D Orleans from Harve, France to New York. He married Barbara Weisend in Monroe County in 1864, and settled in Malaga Township, where he took up farming. George and Barbara were the parents of eleven children and many grandchildren. George died September 16, 1908 and is buried beside his wife, Barbara, in St. John s Cemetery, Miltonsburg.
