First Locally Owned Airplane Arrives

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, July 3, 1929

Woodsfield folk were given a thrill from the sky Wednesday of last week when a plane flew very low over the city and prolonged its stay by doing some fancy flying before landing in the Harper field north of Woodsfield.

The aviator was none other than our own Wally Matz, who made his first flying trip to Woodsfield from the Moundsville field in his new plane. Matz, who is the son of Attorney and Mrs. L.E. Matz, recently completed a course in flying at an aviation school at St. Louis, and his clever maneuvering over Woodsfield for the edification of home folks is proof that he knows his stuff. One wiseacre was heard to say he knew it was Wally all the time by the syncopating tone of the motor, (Wally is a saxophone artist), as he was giving her the gun in every measure, double time. Matz was the first aviator to read the new air marking Woodsfield and directional arrow on the fairground grandstand from the air, the sign being completed one day last week under the auspices of the Woodsfield Kiwanis Club.
