Shreves, Richard Shannon Shreves

Source:  The Monroe County [Ohio] Beacon, online; 15 Feb 2024

Richard Shannon Shreves of Cameron, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on February 8, 2024, at his home. He was born on July 19, 1965, a son of the late Richard and Rita Schultz Shreves.

A man born an old soul. A gifted performer who could play any role, accent and all, performing onstage with the Capital Music Hall and Towngate Theater in Wheeling, W.V. Playing in the roles of King in Cinderella, in Hello Dolly and My Fair Lady to name a few. He did masterful impressions and did many to the thrills of his audience we laughed until we cried. His gift for acting and singing earned him standing ovations. He was a multitalented man in that he was a self-taught ragtime piano player, he was spot on imitating people we knew. His years of film and theater showed in the polish of all his performances. He was passionate about the arts, music, general antiquity and dearly loved his old radio and radio shows and his Victrola which is the only instrument he used to play all his 1920’s collection of 78’s. He especially loved his dear precious dog Roosevelt.

Shannon was a loving and doting son and caregiver to both of his parents. He was a kind and devoted friend, brother, son, and uncle who helped others in need whenever possible. Always helping with groceries, cooking meals, picking up medicine or even going so far as to offer some protection and sanctuary on the family land. He made the land and his home inviting to everyone. A host and entertainer in all settings and at all times.

He was well acquainted with the Bible and knew to whom all credit for creation belonged and is with Him now, sinless and free of shame, cleansed with the forgiving blood of our Savior. He was well read and well written. His flowing rhetoric will be missed on Facebook.

Shannon never met a stranger. It never mattered where we went, Wheeling, Caldwell, Ohio, he knew so many people and their history. He made so many friends at Walmart and Tractor Supply, every job he ever had. Loved by so many people, he leaves a huge void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. He was one of a kind, a true renaissance man. Now free and happy….at last.

In addition to his parents, Shannon was preceded in death by his brother Francis Aubry. He is survived by his two sisters, Melanie Masi of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Cheryl Crooks of Woodsfield, Ohio, in addition to his nieces and nephews.

Judith Jean Tamasovich (née Schwartz), a remarkable woman whose life journey was filled with love, dedication, and inspiration, passed away on June 1, 2024, at The James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. To the loving parents of the late Henry J. and Eleanor Schwartz, she was born on June 24, 1952, in Maple Heights, Ohio. Judy lived 71 years of unwavering devotion to her family, faith, and education.

From her early days at St. Monica School in Garfield Heights, Ohio, to her graduation from Kent State University in 1974 with a degree in early childhood education, Judy’s passion for learning was unmistakable. It was at Kent State that she met her true love, Ted Tamasovich – a young industrial design major – on a double blind date. Together, they built a beautiful rural life in Malaga, Ohio, filled with love and adventure, sharing 49 years of marriage.

Judy was the beloved mother of four children: Barrett (Ashley) of Zanesville, Ohio; Elizabeth (Jeremy) of Galena, Ohio; Christopher of Columbus, Ohio; and Theodore of Seattle, Wash. She was the proud “Nudgie” of Brady, Erica, Emma, and Ellie, who were the light of her life. She is also survived by her doting sister, Nancy Goeddel of St. Louis, Mo.

Judy’s career as an educator spanned over three decades at St. Sylvester Central School in Woodsfield, Ohio, where she was affectionately known as “Mrs. T.” As one of the first lay faculty members, Judy was a trailblazer, dedicating herself to nurturing the potential of every student – she believed in not just teaching the gifted children in her classroom but also adapting to all types of learners giving everyone an equal chance for success. In all aspects of her life, Judy demonstrated a profound dedication to helping others achieve their fullest potential. Her relentless pursuit of knowledge and legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her and those who benefited from the educational opportunities she so championed.

Beyond the classroom, Judy’s passions extended to her faith, annual family vacations to North Carolina, her Hungarian heritage (ask any of her children about chicken paprikash or palacsinta), and her adoring grandchildren. Her commitment to Democrat/Liberal politics and her love for Cleveland remained strong throughout her life. Judy believed that her ability to raise her children to be open-minded and well-rounded adults in a conservative area was a testament to her strength and values.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, she requests that you please consider making a donation in her memory to St. Sylvester Central School, 119 Wayne Street, Woodsfield, OH 43793 to support the continuation of Catholic education, a principle that was close to Judy’s heart.

Judith Jean Tamasovich – forever remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and teacher whose impact will be felt for generations. Her story is one of love, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.

On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Lori A. Wickham, 44, of Warwood, W.V., went home to be with the Lord following a valiant battle with Esophageal Cancer.

She was a beloved mother, fiancée, daughter, sister, aunt and teacher.

Lori was born in Bellaire on March 16, 1980, to Frank and Linda (Vitale) Smithberger.

She grew up in Woodsfield where she was enrolled at St. Sylvester’s Central School. She attended Barnesville High School and graduated in 1998. Lori began her lifelong pursuit of learning at Bethany College and graduated in 2000 with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater.

Lori’s love for learning did not stop there and in 2010 she received her Master of Science in Education from Franciscan University of Steubenville. Her great thirst for knowledge made her a lifelong student; she attended Ohio Dominican University and received her Master of Arts in English Language and Literature in 2018. In June of 2023, she attained a long desired academic goal by earning her Doctoral Degree in Education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa. Learning was her passion and something she worked hard to spread throughout her community.

Lori taught in Switzerland of Ohio Local School District for the past 13 years. She taught English and Visual Arts at Beallsville High School. Her love and dedication for her students was undeniable and she worked hard to inspire them to appreciate literature and writing. She would go above and beyond for any student, meeting them where they were, providing them with the tools needed to succeed. She was not just a teacher but a fierce advocator and mentor for her students.

Lori did not just love her high school students, she was also a Professor of English at Belmont College and West Virginia Northern Community College for many years. Educating and inspiring students were two of Lori’s greatest attributes and she made sure she shared them as much as she could.

Lori’s greatest attribute of all however was her big heart. Anyone who knew her would have a story of an act of kindness she had bestowed on him or her. She loved her family, especially her son, Kaiya, her students, her friends, and random strangers she would encounter. She entered each day trying to figure out how she could make the world a better place. She reached out to all those in need and had the special capacity to love and accept people for who they were. Lori embodied love and compassion and had a knack of being able to get anyone to talk to her. You could never leave Lori’s presence without feeling loved.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Kaiya Wickham; Kaiya’s father, Jason Wickham; her fiancée, James Guy; James’ daughters, Erin and Emma and his grandson, Elio; her parents, Frank and Linda Smithberger; her sister, Jaime (Micheal) Stuckey; her brothers, Justin (Nikki) Smithberger and Sean (Marianne) Smithberger; also seven special nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Lori was preceded in death by her grandparents, Harold and Alfrida Smithberger and James and Lucille Vitale.

Lori was a very special young woman who loved greatly and was greatly loved. She leaves behind a legacy of love. She will be missed by all who knew her.

In keeping with Lori’s love of teaching, her love for others, and her desire to make the world a better place, it was her wishes that her body be donated to science after her passing. In this way, Lori felt she could continue to teach even after she was gone from this earth.

To celebrate and honor Lori’s life, a memorial gathering concluding with a memorial service will be held for family and friends from 12 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Beallsville High School Campus, 43822 SR 556, Beallsville. Mavis Jean Young, 93, born October 30, 1930, on Maple Valley Farm near Lewisville to Harold and Edna (Christman) Young, passed away Monday, January 8 at her home. She was one of 33 children delivered at home by her grandmother Rachael “Mom” Christman.

A child of the Depression, Mavis was an amazing woman.

A serial entrepreneur, she married Ralph “Bus” McCurdy January 5, 1947, found time to have five children, Jere (JJ), Lynn, Carson, Pam and Molly, meanwhile obtaining her GED, translating sensitive Russian documents for Battelle Institute of Columbus, becoming a supervisor at LGAM, buying and upgrading the Woodsfield Carry Out, becoming a realtor, creating and obtaining funding for Woodsfield’s only low income housing project, renovating many older homes, buying farms, bringing the first herd of Santa Gertrudis cattle east of the Mississippi, pumping oil wells, obtaining her nursing home administrator’s license and managing both Monroe County homes as well as another in southern Ohio, buying a nursing home in Beallsville, buying and upgrading Wilson Carry Out and Mom’s Place in Wilson, moving to Florida where she sold real estate and continued renovating homes. This is only a partial list.

Returning to Woodsfield to be the primary caregiver for daughter Pam’s children Grant and Angela Nichols was typical of her unselfish nature. Mavis always lived frugally and spent minimally on herself while having an open hand for those in need.

Her daily routine until recently included working on refinishing furniture that someone had thrown away. She always said she could make something out of nearly nothing. She has a print in her home stating, “I started with nothing, and still have most of it left”.

Mavis’ work ethic reflected her hardscrabble upbringing with nonstop 14 to 18 hour days the norm. She continuously analyzed ways to improve on her condition and that of others. She rarely slowed down and continued to be extremely sharp until the end. Her neighbor “Toby” was her best friend and primary caregiver. A very special man.

Mavis was preceded in death by her brother Kenneth; sister Kay Young; son JJ; daughter Pam Nichols; grandson Grant Nichols; husbands Bus McCurdy and Rodney (Sid) Wilson. She is survived by sister Joy Young of Evergreen, Colo.

To state that she will be missed does not do the impact that she had on so many justice.

An amazing woman, mother and friend.

No services. Please say a prayer for her.
