Charles Lee Lattea,
"Charlie," went home to be with his Lord May 17, 2019, at Sunrise of
Annapolis. He is survived by 2 daughters, Kathleen Marie and Karen Lee, and
Karen's spouse Kevin Owings Driscoll. Charlie also dearly loved his grandchildren,
Colleen Hays and Evan Hays and his spouse Amy Hays, and his two great
grandchildren, Jackson and Liliana. Dear friends at Sunrise who will miss him
include Margaret "Maggie".
Visitation will start at 10 am,
Tuesday, May 21, at John M. Taylor Funeral Home in Annapolis, 147 Duke of
Gloucester St, Annapolis, MD 21401 followed immediately by the funeral service
at noon. Charlie will be buried at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville at
a later date.
Charlie was born in 1929 in Clarksburg,
W. Va., the second child of Homer and Mary Merle Lattea (sister, Frances, and
brother, William, predeceased him) with little financial wealth but an
abundance of love for Jesus and for the family. He was recruited out of high
school to come to the big city, DC, to work for the FBI doing fingerprint
comparisons by eyeball.
When drafted for the Korean war, he tested high enough to be part of the Central
Intelligence Corps doing background checks on Army personnel being considered
for security clearances. One story from this time defines Charlie to his loved
ones. When he approached a black high school principal in Georgia for
background on a black soldier, he held out his hand as usual to shake hands.
The principal said, "I just want you to know you are the first white man
who ever offered to shake my hand."
After the Army, Charlie sold fine
papers for nearly 50 years to printers and rose to become a vice president.
After many years in Rockville, MD,
Charlie moved to Annapolis. Charlie made friends with all of his coworkers and
customers. When they had a death in the family, he showed up. At his church,
just like his father before him, he taught the Bible in adult Sunday School at Trinity United Methodist in Annapolis. Charlie
took Jesus at his word that we should show love to everyone he met.
This is Charlie's life and
legacy-unconditional love. Charlie was a father and grandfather to be proud of
and whose counsel was always wise. He did not judge people by their mistakes
but modeled faithful and honorable living daily. He was the best father two
girls could have. When we had problems in relationships he would help us
empathize with the other person. It is no surprise that both daughters have had
long human service careers. He believed the best about everyone. While a truly
humble man, the one area he bragged about was his family. He was never happier
than surrounded by those he loved.
In heaven now, he is whole and in
harmony with Christ and rejoined with his father and mother. Charlie was a
product of generations of faith in God, and all of his descendants share his
faith to this day. That is a legacy for which we are forever grateful. We can
all pray to live up to his memory and to hear in heaven, "Well done, good
and faithful servant!"

Jenna's friends, their life will be forever touched by the genuine love she
showed.

*Submitter’s Note: Jenna was also briefly mentioned in an
article in the same newspaper on May 19 that was centered on the other girl
killed: "Kind. Beautiful.
Friendly. These
were words used to describe Quirina "Nina" Martinez, one of two
teenagers killed on May 10 in a car accident near Maricopa. The 15-year-old was close to wrapping up her
school year at Vista Grande High School when a car she was traveling in crashed
near White and Parker Road. Jenna Lattea, a 16-year-old student, also was

Phillips,
David Phillips

com]; 16 May 2019
David Phillips, 79, of Woodsfield, Ohio, and formerly of
the Mill Creek, West Virginia community, died Thursday evening, May 9, 2019, at
the Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge, Ohio, as the result
of a motor vehicle accident. He was born August 3, 1939, in Adolph, West
Virginia, a son of the late James L. and Hattie Pritt Phillips. For many years,
he bravely fought numerous battles with malignant melanoma and Parkinson’s
disease.
The youngest of nine siblings, David was the last surviving
member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by four brothers and their spouses, Paul (Louise) Phillips, Jack
Phillips, Elmer Phillips, and Don (Marilyn) Phillips; four sisters and their
spouses, Geneva (James) McLaughlin, Mabel (Russell) Fox, Wanda Phillips and
Catherine Phillips. Also preceding him in death were a niece, Pam Phillips, and
two nephews, Kevin and Michael Phillips; his father-in-law and mother-in-law,
Ralph and Elsie Burky; and his brother-in-law, William H. (Billy) Burky.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Patricia
“Patty” Burky, whom he married on August 24, 1966. Also surviving are his
brother-in-law, Fred J. (Jan) Burky, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Phillips dedicated his life to education. He always
believed he chose the right profession because he enjoyed working with people,
especially the young and the elderly. He began his education in a two-room
elementary school near his home and was a 1957 honor graduate of Tygarts Valley
High School, where he also lettered four years in basketball. He was a dean’s
list student and 1961 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College earning a B.A.
degree in education with a major in comprehensive business education. In 1971
he earned a M.Ed. degree summa cum laude from Kent State University and
completed postgraduate work at Ohio State University and the University of
Detroit.
He began his teaching career at Pickens High School in
Pickens, West Virginia, where his students excelled on a state and national
level. After four years, he accepted a position in Lewis County, West Virginia,
teaching elementary and secondary students. He also taught adult education
classes. In 1966 he and his wife moved to Monroe County, Ohio, where he taught two
years at the former Skyvue High School in the Monroe Local School District. He
impressed upon his students the value of a good education and often shared his
motto, “Work hard, and be determined to do your best.” During those seven years
of teaching, Mr. Phillips found his students to be a great inspiration.
Ultimately, he enjoyed many lifelong friendships with them.
In 1968, Mr. Phillips began his service in the newly
consolidated Switzerland of Ohio Local School District as coordinator of
federal and state programs. In 1969, he helped to lay the groundwork for
establishing the first special education classes in Southeastern Ohio. In 1972,
he was named “Ohio Administrator of the Year” by the Ohio School Counselors
Association. Mr. Phillips was a 10-year member (1969-1979) and past president
of the board for the former Monroe County Mentally Retarded and Developmentally
Disabled program. As federal funds coordinator, he also was the director of the
Monroe County Head Start program.
By 1973, Mr. Phillips became administrative assistant to
the superintendent in charge of district purchasing, student activity accounts,
and collective bargaining for both certificated and classified employees. As
assistant superintendent in 1978 he was responsible for the district finances,
and in 1985 he was appointed superintendent of the Switzerland of Ohio Local
School District, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Phillips
enjoyed administrative work and believed the daily problem solving provided a
great learning experience. His teamwork approach with employees and the board
of education was an effort to create good educational opportunities for boys
and girls. He held the best interests of the school district at heart. Mr.
Phillips enjoyed knowing and working with the people in Monroe County.
After his retirement, Mr. Phillips gave back to his
community with several years of volunteer service until his health gradually
declined. As a 40-year member of the Woodsfield Kiwanis Club, he chaired
several projects for the elderly and homebound. He was the 1993 and 2000
recipient of the “Kiwanian of the Year” award and in 2001 was honored to
receive the Kiwanis International Foundation’s “George F. Hixson Award,”
bestowed upon individuals for their unselfish contributions in helping to
better their communities. Mr. Phillips was also a faithful member of the
Woodsfield First United Methodist Church for many years. He served on various
committees and helped to further the mission of the church by serving as the
chairman of the finance committee, vice-chairman of the endowment committee,
and member of the church administrative council. In addition, he was a member
of the Monroe Central Athletic Club, Monroe County Farm Bureau, Buckeye
Association of School Administrators, Ohio Education Association, and Monroe
County Retired Teachers Association.
Mr. Phillips was a wonderful husband. He also loved the
members of his family and his friends very much. He was thankful for the many
blessings in his life, especially for the gift of each new day. His family
gratefully acknowledges the many years of excellent medical care he received
from The Ohio State University Hospitals and the compassionate care he was
given at Arbors at Woodsfield from 2015 -2019.
The family will receive friends at Watters Funeral Home,
37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, May 16.

Pringle,
Merttie Opal Pringle, nee Bowen
Source: The Hadley Funeral Home, New Matamoras, Ohio;
8 Apr 2019
Merttie Opal Pringle, 94, New Matamoras, Ohio, departed this
life at Westwood Place Assisted Living, Woodsfield, Ohio, following a brief
illness on April 6, 2019, and was welcomed home by her loving Savior Jesus, her
family, and friends who preceded her in death. Opal was a member of Harrison
Freewill Baptist Church, Minford, OH.
Opal was born March 22, 1925 at Beverly, Randolph County,
West Virginia, the daughter of James Henry and Polly Etta (Wegman) Bowen, the
tenth of fourteen children.
Opal’s mother died when Opal was thirteen; her sister Rosie
stepped in as a mother figure and helped raise her.
While working as domestic help on a farm, she met the “love
of her life” Percy Junior Pringle who was working on the farm as a hired hand.
When Percy left the farm for employment in Baltimore, MD, she felt she would
never see him again. However, he returned to the farm and asked her to marry
him. They were married December 3, 1940 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky; a marriage
that lasted fifty-years until Percy’s death in 1991.
Opal worked in a garment factory in Buckhannon, WV during
World War II sewing uniforms for the military, while her husband served with
the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater.
Opal gave her life to Jesus around 1950 and became a
life-long disciple of her Savior and Lord. She was persistent in inviting Percy
to join her for worship services, desiring he would know the personal salvation
experience she enjoyed, but he refused. Finally, after many months of asking,
Percy agreed to go to a worship service with her at the Evangelical United
Brethren Church, Alton, WV, where he accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord of his
life. This decision forever changed their lives!
Percy was called into pastoral ministry in 1955 in the West
Virginia Conference, Evangelical United Brethren Church, and thus began a
thirty-five years long joint ministry with Opal serving by his side as his
greatest supporter and encourager. They served churches in Arden, WV, Rinard
Mills, OH, West Portsmouth, OH, Marietta, OH, New Lexington, OH, Leesburg, OH,
and various interim appointments in the Athens District, West Ohio United
Methodist Conference, following their retirement.
Opal carried out her ministry as a Sunday school teacher
and held various offices in many church women’s groups. She was a lay speaker
in the United Methodist Church.
Opal’s faith was a shining example to others, and many
peoples’ lives were forever changed by being in her presence and hearing how
God had brought her through the difficult times in her life. Her life taught
her to have the patience of Job, and the love of Jesus for all she met. She
read her Bible from cover-to-cover each year for over forty years.
Opal is survived by three sons, Jerry Lynn (Sylvia)
Pringle, Tampa, FL; Terry Lee (Janice) Pringle, New Matamoras, OH; and Lonnie
Ray (Carlotta) Pringle, Lewisville Lake, TX; daughter-in-law, Vicki Pringle,
Jackson, OH; two brothers, Robert Bowen, Cleveland, OH; and Jimmy Bowen,
Brunswick, OH: grandchildren, Michelle (Carlos) Mays, Wheelersburg, OH; Brian
(Vickilynn) Pringle, Brandon, FL; Jeffrey (Chanc) Pringle, Pace, FL; Chad
Pringle, Celina, TX; Jennifer Boles, Lewisville Lake, TX; Jennifer (Ryan)
Lauer, Marietta, OH; Tiffany (Tyler) Schumacher, Woodsfield, OH;
step-grandchildren, Shane (Kari) Williams, Jackson, OH; Joshua (Leslie)
Williams, Portsmouth, OH; and Jessica Williams, Jackson, OH; great
grandchildren, Erica (Jonathan) Eldridge, Megan (Shay) Lore, Zachary Mays,
Madison Mays; Eliana Pringle, Daniel Pringle, Andrew Pringle; Alexander
Pringle, Xaidyn Pringle; Ethan Boles; Leigha Lauer, Blake Lauer; Raylin
Schumacher, Lucas Schumacher, Madeline Schumacher; step great grandchildren,
Evan Williams, Katelyn Williams; JT Williams, Cameron Williams; and great-great
grandchild, Averie Eldridge.
Her children and grandchildren were a source of joy and
pride in her life as she witnessed their many accomplishments.
She was preceded in death by her parents; father and
mother-in-law, Percy Hinkle and Rebecca Jane (Hosaflook) Pringle; husband Percy
Junior; son, Larry Michael; infant daughter Karolyn; and siblings, Bessie
Betty, Mary Alice, Rosie Ettie, Georgie Emaline, Junior William, Stella Anna,
Viola Marie, Clinton Henry, Ada Jean, Olive Margaret, and Madeline Virginia.
The family expresses its sincere gratitude to the
management, staff and residents of Westwood Place Assisted Living for their
loving and compassionate care of Opal over the past fifteen months at the place
she has called “home”; and Amedisys Hospice for its employees’ care, support
and assistance during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to Harrison Freewill Baptist Church, 12254 State
