Eklund,
Alice Louise Jefferies Eklund

July, 2018
June 08, 1926 — July 07, 2018
Alice was born June 8, 1926, in Enid,
OK. At 20 months old she was placed in an orphanage. Eight days later Alice was
taken to the home of Wayne, Minnie and Melvinia Jefferies. They adopted her and
were her loving parents and sister.
Alice’s dad, Wayne, had built a nice
home on their 80-acre farm outside Kiowa, KS, but times were hard and Wayne had
to get a job in town. Later he transferred to Isabel, KS where Melvinia
graduated from high school and Alice went to 1st grade. The next year the
family moved back to the farm, and Alice went to the country school her mother,
dad and sister attended.
Alice’s dad farmed until she was ready
for the 8th grade. Then her parents sold the farm, and the family moved into
the town of Kiowa. During her school years Alice studied piano with Mrs. Hugh
Griffin and earned many awards for her skill as a pianist. Among her awards was
inclusion on the National Honor Roll for Pianists at age 11. Alice graduated from
Kiowa High School in 1944 and went to Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS on a
music scholarship. There she met the love of her life, Bob Eklund. They were
married July 1, 1945 in her parents’ home in Kiowa.
Throughout her lifetime Alice gave the gift
of music to many piano students, accompanied others, and played for countless
events. She was (in her words) “ So fortunate to have
had such wonderful, loving parents, a precious sister whom I loved dearly, and
the best husband in the world.” She was also blessed with six children: Connie,
Larry, MaryAnn, Shellee, Wayne and Scott. She and Bob had a beautiful life
together and were especially happy when their children and grandchildren were
around.
Alice is survived by her children
Connie Bray, Larry (Celia) Eklund, MaryAnn (Marty) Rathburn, Shellee (Richard)
Starr, Wayne (Rose) Eklund, Scott (Syndi) Eklund; 12 grandchildren, 25
great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by her loving husband of 71 years, her parents, her sister, and one
granddaughter, Kim Bryant.
A memorial service will be held 10:00
a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2018 at The Chapel of the Cross in Cedaredge, CO with
Rev. Wayne Eklund officiating. Interment was at Cedaredge Cemetery, Cedaredge,

From the Monroe County Beacon, published in May of 2010 and

“Woodsfield Village Council recently honored lifelong
Woodsfield resident Don Harmon during their May 3 meeting. Mayor Bill Bolon
reconvened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. by reading the resolution honoring Harmon.
Bolon read the resolution aloud saying, ‘Don Harmon has
dedicated decades of such selfless service to the citizens of our village of
Woods-field, in his tireless and devoted acts which have developed, maintained,
and enhanced the aesthetic appearance and recreational opportunities offered by
the village of Woodsfield.’
He went on to say that Harmon’s service and contributions
to the Woodsfield Park Board, Woodsfield Youth Center, and the Woodsfield
municipal swimming pool have been essential to the benefits those programs and
facilities offer the citizens of Woodsfield.
It was then resolved by council after the resolution’s
reading that Don Harmon be honored by proclaiming the tennis courts at Memorial
Park now and perpetually, Don Harmon Tennis Courts.
A roar of applause and standing ovation for the community
