Helen Madelo Lambert (94) of College
Avenue, Morgantown, West Virginia departed this earth on Monday, May 22, 2017
to fly with the angels. Madelo was born November 23, 1922 in Freemans Creek
West Virginia. She was the third child, and second daughter, of Scott and
Esther (Dean) Lambert. She was preceded in death by her brother Leo Lambert of
Massillon, Ohio and her sister Maxine Dillon of Hartford, Connecticut. She is
survived by her sister Virginia Smith of Jane Lew, West Virginia.
With the loving support of her parents
Scott and Esther, Madelo raised three children to whom she was completely and
fiercely devoted: Tonjia Lambert of Morgantown, West Virginia; David Lambert
(and wife Carol) of Bethesda, Maryland; and Michael Lambert (and wife Diane) of
Monroeville, Pennsylvania. She treasured her granddaughter, Heather Lambert (and
husband Michael Porter) and great-grandson Elias Porter of Ithaca, New York.
Her family loved her dearly and will miss her deeply.
Madelo grew up in western Lewis County
where her father taught at various one-room schools. She moved to Weston prior
to her senior year in high school where she graduated in 1941 from Weston High
School. Throughout her years in Weston, Madelo worked as a Medical Secretary
for Dr. Chapman, as a decorator/painter at West Virginia Glass, and as a
linotype operator at the Weston Independent. In 1967 she relocated to
Morgantown, West Virginia where she enjoyed a long career as a senior executive
assistant at West Virginia University.
After her retirement from the
University in 1985 she spent the most fulfilling years of her life; tending her
beautiful garden, maintaining her historic house, and celebrating the holidays
with her close-knit family. She loved traveling throughout West Virginia and
the Mid-Atlantic on day excursions with her daughter Tonjia. During this period
in her life she mastered many crafts and fine arts and left her family with
beautiful artifacts to treasure. She was an active participant in animal rescue
activities, tending to stray cat colonies with persistent dedication.
Madelo celebrated her independence and
strength as a woman and was a role model for scores of young women with whom
she worked and befriended throughout her life. For those who knew and loved
her, she was truly a one-of-a-kind. She lived her life always with grace and dignity
and a sense of purpose.
Her family would like to extend thanks
to the TAVR heart valve replacement team at Mon General Hospital whose skill
and compassion allowed her family the opportunity to spend nearly three
additional joyous years with their mother.
A very special thank you is reserved
for the staff at Mapleshire Nursing Home in Morgantown who cared for her
through the last two years of her life. The nurses and nurse-aides treated her
like she was one of their own family and made her
final months comfortable and happy. Her family will be forever grateful for
their loving care and support.
Family and friends are invited to

Tonjia Lee Lambert, 71 of Morgantown,
West Virginia joined her mother and grandparents in heaven on June 25, 2017.
She died at Ruby Hospital in Morgantown as the result of injuries suffered in
an automobile accident two weeks earlier.
Tonjia was born in Weston, West
Virginia on October 15, 1945 the only daughter of Helen Madelo Lambert. She was
preceded in death by her mother on May 22, 2017 and by her grandparents, Scott
and Esther Lambert, all of whom she loved dearly. Tonjia is survived by two
brothers, David Lambert and wife Carol of Bethesda, Maryland and Michael
Lambert and wife Diane of Monroeville, Pennsylvania. Her passing has left a
giant hole in their hearts and lives. She is also survived by her aunt,
Virginia Smith of Jane Lew, her niece Heather Lambert (Casey Porter) and her
grand-nephew Elias Porter, of Ithaca, New York.
Tonjia graduated from Weston High
School with the class of 1963 and from the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City in
1977. Prior to joining the FAA, she worked for West Virginia University and the
US Department of Treasury. She had a long and successful career with the FAA,
serving at Flight Service Stations in Erie PA, Morgantown and Elkins, WV. After
retiring from the FAA, she worked at Tri-Ag Federal Credit Union and after
retiring there was elected to the Credit Union Board of Trustees where she
continued to serve.
Tonjia was one of those rare
individuals for whom it can truly be said that she lived her life in service to
others. She made sacrifices in her own life to assure her younger brothers were
cared for and successful. She spent years caring for her grandparents and
mother during their declining years. She was the foundation of her family and a
loyal and caring friend. She loved to travel, particularly to the beach, and
enjoyed exploring the back roads during her travels. Tonjia was unbeatable in
any game or competition that required a quick mind and a treasure trove of
knowledge. She loved animals and she and her mother dedicated much of their
time to caring for stray and abandoned cats.
Her family extends heartfelt thanks to
the nurses and physicians in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Ruby Hospital.
They did everything in their power to assist in her recovery and were kind and
supportive of her family and friends during her hospitalization.
The family encourages all who would
like to honor her memory to donate to Morgantowncats.com.
