Hawkins, Ruth Thorniley Hawkins, nee Valentine
Source: mcbeacon.com, [Woodsfield, Ohio]; 4 Jan 2018
Ruth Valentine Thorniley Hawkins died Tuesday, Nov. 28,
2017, in the care of Hospice at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
Ruth was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, February 13, 1935, to
the late David F. Valentine and Helen Tobrocke Valentine.
The family took up residence in New Matamoras, later moving
to Marietta. Ruth attended Sand Hill School in Reno, and Marietta High School
graduating in the Class of 1953. She then attended Ohio University in Athens,
receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1957. After receiving
her degree Ruth taught sixth grade at Putnam School in Devola.
On July 6, 1959, she married Friend Joseph Thorniley in the
Valley Baptist Church on Newport Pike. A daughter, Julianna, was born on April
17, 1963. The Thorniley Family engaged in dairy farming on the family farm on
Newport Pike. Ruth and Joe participated in the local Farm Bureau and Farmers
Club.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Joe; daughter,
Julie; her parents, David Valentine and Helen Valentine; and an infant sister.
Ruth was an avid supporter and volunteer in preserving the
history and nature of Washington County. She studied the genealogy of the
founding families of Marietta and the surrounding area. She was the vice
president of the Washington County Historical Society, where she lent her
energies and talent to the efforts to preserve the Fearing House and the
Anchorage giving countless hours of her time. She was instrumental in
organizing the first reunion of the Rufus Putnam descendants. Most Saturday
mornings you would find her leading tours through forgotten county cemeteries,
helping birdwatchers find a rare glimpse of a species they had only seen in
pictures or driving the back roads identifying historical homes, farms and
properties long forgotten.
The Learning in Retirement program at Marietta College was
a passion. From the beginning Ruth was part of the program committee and
attended many of the courses offered. She convinced Dave Hawkins, her husband
to be the Program Committee Chair and thus drew him into her circle of friends.
Having been forbidden by her mother to elope on her first
marriage Ruth and Dave proceeded to Catlettsburg, Kentucky and were married on
the first day of spring in 2004, by the Rev. Dr. David Hankins. The wedding
party of two then moved on to a nearby Waffle House, which became their
favorite dining spot when they traveled.
She is survived by her husband, Dave Hawkins;
sister-in-law, Eltheda E. Thorniley; nieces, Patricia C. Thorniley and Barbara
A. Thorniley; and Clifford Taylor, a close family friend.
Ruth was a vivacious lady, always of good cheer and
encouragement. The nurses who took such loving care of her to the end were
enamored with her smile and great patience. She will be missed by a great many
people.

James S “Jim” Jefferis of
Woodsfield, formerly of Wright Road - Barnesville passed quietly and peacefully
at his home the morning of March 1, 2017.
Son of the late Regis and Geraldine Jefferis, of
Barnesville, he is survived by his loving wife Candy; his children, Doug
(Michelle), of Columbus, and Becky Knight (Mike), of Barnesville; as well as a
grandson (Aidan) of Aurora; three cousins, Brian Jefferis, Susan McKenzie and
Jeanie Frazer; and two aunts, Dolores Frazier and Ruth Jefferis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother,
Arthur Regis "Artie" Jefferis, Jr.; cousin, Paul Bruce Jefferis; and
numerous great beagle and coon dogs.
James was a former employee of the #6 coalmine and farmer
(two things a young Jimmy swore he would never be - a coal miner or a dirt farmer)
and prior owner of the Hilltop Carryout in Barnesville. He was an accomplished
banjo player and one of the best damn southpaws in Barnesville baseball
history.
Those that knew him will each have a story to tell you - he
inherited a love of the land and music from his father and carried it
throughout his life. He also enjoyed being outdoors, farming and above all us
spending time with his family and numerous friends.
He was a member of the US Army and proud Vietnam veteran as
well as a life member of the VFW as well as a member of the American Legion,
Knights of Columbus and the DAV.
He waged a valiant battle against pancreatic cancer the
past 18 months and served as an inspiration in the spirit that he approached
the disease. He would never let the disease define him carried on doing the
things he loved, he adopted the simple motto from his Vietnam days of “drive on
- don’t mean a damn thing” and continued to enjoy his life.
Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m.
until the time of vigil service at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2017, at
Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home, 319 North Chestnut St., Barnesville. Mass
of Christian Burial will be observed at 10 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2017, with Fr.
Dave Cornett officiating at Assumption Church, 306 West Main St., Barnesville.
Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery where military honors will be
conducted by Barnesville VFW.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the veterans’
charity of the donor’s choosing. Finally, the family would like to thank the
staff at OSU/James, at Medi Home Health and most especially Rita, who kind and
wonderful care of both himself and Candy brought him comfort these final few
years.

Jackie Lou Jim (Underwood) had many titles. Wife, Mother,
Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Daughter, Navy Corpsman, Nurse
and Friend. She was many things to many people. One of the greatest attribute
she had was caring. She cared about how you were doing, she cared about you
doing better in life, and she cared about making sure you knew she was there to
help if you needed it. In short she cared about you without a thought of cost or
sacrifice to her self. Jackie, you will be sorely missed and you can never be
replaced in our lives. Love you always.

song of his was Jailhouse Rock. She also enjoyed old Hymns, like “How Great
Thou Art” and “Power in the Blood.” She loved to sing to the lover of her soul,
Jesus.
She left a legacy in each one of her
boys. Her children have a part of her that will be forever cherished. When you
look at each one of them you can see a piece of Cathy. Rather it be her temper, her boldness, creativity, love for music,
compassion or faith in Jesus her boys reflect her. She had such passion for her
family especially her grandchildren. She burned with excitement over them. She
has 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She loved each of them so much.
But one of her little sidekicks was her baby girl, Savannah. The sun rose and
set on that little girl. They had a bond that no one could tear apart. Everyone
knew her to be kind and compassionate. No matter how much pain she had she
would always have a smile on her face and the strength to keep fighting the
good fight. She was a momma bear if anyone would ever touch her children. She
was a very protective and loving mom.
Cathy was born in Akron Ohio to Edith
Jorgensen* and Lee Hayes. She later moved to Anaconda with her mother and
remained here until she was taken home. While she lived here she met her first
husband Marshall Scholler and had 5 amazing boys. Later, life took some
different turns and she met her second Husband Craig Kostad whom she loved with
all her heart. They enjoyed 19 years together. Craig was able to get Cathy to
go fishing and camping. They enjoyed long drives in the mountains and enjoyed
their grandkids together.
Cathy is survived by her husband Craig
Kostad, her children, Shawn and Tina Scholler, David Scholler, Cory Scholler, Trevor
and Sherry Scholler and Cody and Seana Scholler, her grandkids Christopher
Wright, Ashely Wright (Colt O'Donnell), Wesley Taylor (Shelby), Elizabeth
Wright (Vernon), Matthew, Shawn, Damian, Nehemiah, Savannah, Selina and Joshua
Scholler, her great grandchildren Journey Mcalpin-Wright and Payton
Mcalpin-Wright, her mother Edith Jorgensen and father Jim Jorgensen, her
brothers and sisters, Terry, Debbie, Todd, Tammy Hayes, and Eddie Jorgensen and
many nieces and nephews.
Cathy is preceded in death by her dad
Lee Hayes, grandparents, brother Michael Jorgensen,
daughter Savannah Scholler and grandson Malachi Scholler.
Services were held at the Living Waters
Church on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. There was one hour of
