Fort Morgan [Colorado] Times - Thursday, February 11, 2016
Bruce
Wilton Smart of Fort Morgan, Colorado, age 88, died at Colorado Plains Medical
Center in Fort Morgan, CO on February 7, 2016. Bruce was born to Spencer V. and
Opal A. (Kough) Smart on January 6, 1928. His father's employment in the
canning business required frequent moves, and Bruce attended schools in many
states, with the majority of his education being achieved in Fort Morgan;
Houston and La Feria, Texas; and Monticello, Arkansas. He considered his
freshman and sophomore years in La Feria High School to be his most enjoyable
school years where he lettered as the football team manager, and he received
Top Scholastic Honors both years. Bruce attended Monticello High School for his
junior and senior years, and during his senior year he was inducted into the
National Honor Society and graduated third in his class in 1946. Through those
late teenage years he worked various jobs, some alongside his father in the
canning business. In 1947 he became a full-time resident of Fort Morgan. After
graduating from high school he tried to enlist in the Air Corps but was denied
enlistment due to his flat feet. Needing employment he contacted his uncle, Lee
Iungerich, who lived north of Fort Morgan, and Lee put him to work on his farm
until the farm's reduced work load through the winter once again required him
to look for other employment. Until more-sustaining employment options could be
acquired, he worked for Harold Berryhill at the Fort Morgan Airport, which is
where he took flight training and earned his private pilot's license; Loren
Anderson in his radio repair shop, building a life-long friendship with Loren
and his wife, Francis; Harry Jacobson of Jacobson Motors; Hendrie and Bolthoff
Auto Parts; Stickney's; and Century Geophysical Company--all Fort Morgan
companies. In 1952 he began his career with Hamlin Electric Company/Hamlin

Standiford,
Ann Ligouria Standiford, nee Davis
Source: Grisell
Funeral Home, New Martinsville, West Virginia; Oct 2016
Ann
Ligouria Standiford (Davis) left this life on Monday, October 24, 2016. She is
preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Arthur Davis and Margaret (Mullin)Davis; two brothers, Tom and Joe Davis; and her husband of
52 years, the late William Eugene Standiford.
She is
survived by three (six) cherished children: Tom (Teresa) Standiford of New
Martinsville, W.Va; Bridgett (Erich) Reger of Huntington, W.Va; and Bob
(Danielle) Standiford of New Martinsville, W.Va. and six (seven) beloved
grandchildren: Staci (Daniel) Fonner of Coventry, England; T.J. Standiford of St.
Petersburg, FL; Trevor Standiford, Ellie Reger, and Paige Reger of Huntington,
W.Va; and Kiera Standiford of New Martinsville, W.Va.
“Mammam,” as she became known after grandchildren starting showing up,
was born on March 31, 1936, in Sistersville, W.Va., and even after spending 60
years living in New Martinsville, she still proudly called herself a
Sistersvillian. She worked at the New Martinsville Public Library for 35 years,
and loved all “libaries,” as she called them. In recent years, she visited
Drinko Library at Marshall University and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh,
wandering from room to room pointing and “aw-ing” out loud.
She was
an avid reader who especially loved Max Lucado books and a talented
cross-stitcher who shared her gift by making things for her loved ones. Her
other loves included all things chocolate and the many precious animals she
cared for through the years (a few cats, many dogs, and even a goat. Yes, a
goat). She enjoyed playing cards and games, having an adventure, or living one
vicariously through a loved one. When she was in the kitchen, she flopped a tea towel over her shoulder for convenience and
would nibble on various things, then put them in the fridge for months. A peek
in her freezer would reveal about eight McDonald’s iced coffees in various
states of “finished.”
She
could often be found walking her dog Yogi or participating in events and Bible
studies at the New Martinsville United Methodist Church (formerly St. John’s),
where she was a member for 60 years. Or sitting on a tall kitchen stool, eating
her lunch, reading a book (held open by a railroad spike), and looking out the
window to see if she could catch a glimpse of any of the neighborhood humming
birds.
Her
quintessential outfit was high-wasted elastic pants with a blouse, cardigan,
and her trusty Keds. And, if she was out, a long green dog “lish” hung over her
shoulder, because if she was out, Yogi wasn’t far behind.
She was
quirky and silly, wearing big hats for winter and summer, jumping up and down
on Maple Avenue as she watched the Magnolia Marching Band head to the football
field, and even taking a motorcycle ride from a complete stranger…when she was
in her 70s.
Her
prescription for life would include a soul-mate-dog, a good book, a daily nap,
and a piece of chocolate at bedtime. She never quite mastered the art of the
whisper or perfected more than a handful of dinners, but her excitement and
love for her family and friends never waned. Often, you would get a
hand-over-the-mouth giggle or a “bully for you!” after sharing good news with
her, or perhaps a tall, bony hug and a “goody goody!”
She will
be missed dearly and never forgotten, as we wait patiently for the day we will
join her in Heaven.
Family will receive friends honoring Ann
on Thursday from 9 am until time of funeral service at Noon at the Grisell
Funeral Home & Crematory 751 Third St. New Martinsville
with Pastor Sharletta Green officiating.
Interment will follow in Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville.
In lieu
of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ann’s name to the New
Martinsville United Methodist Church 10 Howard Dr. New
Martinsville, WV 26155 or Wetzel County Humane Society P.O. Box 395 New Martinsville,
WV 26155.

BELMONT
COUNTY, Ohio — Belmont County homicide suspect Harold Johnson Jr. was arraigned
Tuesday.
Johnson was indicted by a grand jury on
one count of aggravated murder with a firearm specification, after authorities
were able to put a case together against him in just 10 minutes with the help
of key witnesses.
Defense Attorney Frank Pearce entered a
not-guilty plea on Johnson’s behalf.
Belmont County Sheriff Dave Lucas says
a weapon was recovered from Johnson during the investigation on Dec. 12 along
State Route 800, south of Somerton. That's where Johnson allegedly shot and
killed 48-year-old Clint Stephens from Jerusalem.
“The suspect’s vehicle was there first,
from the witnesses, and the victim's vehicle pulled in behind him. Words were
stated, and then the victim was shot several times inside his vehicle,” Lucas
said.
Deputies intercepted Johnson's truck in
Malaga, just a few miles away from the shooting, after witnesses were able to
provide key details about his vehicle.
And this case will see an aggressive
court schedule. If not resolved sooner, the trial is set for Feb. 13.
A $1 million bail was continued in the
case.

Jun 5, 2017 - Harold Johnson pleaded
guilty to one count of aggravated murder with a gun specification on Monday

for the shooting and killing of Clint Stephens, from Jerusalem, on Dect. 12, 2016, along State Route 800.

SENTENCING

Leader, [Martins Ferry, Ohio] ; Jun 20, 2017
Life
sentence for man in Ohio 800 shooting death
Harold
Johnson Jr. eligible for parole in 20 years
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Harold Wayne Johnson
Jr. received a life sentence Monday for the roadside shooting of Clint Stephens
in December.
Johnson appeared before Belmont County
Common Pleas Judge John Vavra, who handed down the sentence of life in prison
without the possibility of parole for 20 years for aggravated murder with a
firearm specification.
Johnson must first serve three years
for the firearm specification, meaning he will not be eligible for parole for
23 years.
Johnson, 46, of Lewisville, had entered
his guilty plea on what was to have been the first day of his trial.
The incident occurred in December when
Johnson met Stephens, 48, of Jerusalem, along Ohio 800 south of Somerton, exited
his vehicle and shot Stephens, who was still inside his own car. Shortly
afterward, Johnson was arrested by Monroe County sheriff’s deputies.
Beth Kirk, a friend of the victim’s
family, spoke during Monday’s sentencing hearing about the lasting sense of
loss created by Stephens’ death.
“He took a piece of all of us with
him,” Kirk said.
Public Defender Frank Pierce said he
recognizes the murder has left a lasting impact on many, but he asked Vavra to
consider Johnson’s remorse. He also pointed out that while two evaluations did
not find that he met the law’s standard for an insanity defense, the
examinations showed evidence of long-term mental illness.
“The full responsibility for the
killing is my client’s, but circumstances showed he was under great strain and
he did this act out in the open in the presence of witnesses, and almost
immediately he was taken into custody without incident,” Pierce said.
“I regret all that has happened,”
Johnson said.
Vavra referred to Johnson’s prior
record, including misdemeanor assault, operating a vehicle under the influence
of alcohol, driving under suspension, and disorderly conduct involving alcohol
intoxication.
“Mr. Johnson shot and killed Mr.
Stephens with at least six shots to his head, all while he was seated in his
vehicle. Mr. Johnson claims to have been intoxicated at the time,” he said. “He
has a history of violent, irresponsible misconduct. He is unable to control his
rage, which is worsened by his history of alcohol abuse.”
Vavra pointed out Johnson has been
evaluated twice and found competent, and spoke about the lasting harm to the
Stephens’ family.
“His cowardly conduct in using a gun to
commit his violence has adversely impacted the family and friends of the
victim, and as well the psyche … of all good and
just-thinking people of Belmont County.”
Belmont County Prosecutor Dan Fry said
aggravated murder is the most serious form of homicide recognized by the state
of Ohio.
“The life sentence imposed by Judge Vavra
as recommended by this office was warranted for this heinous act,” Fry said.
“The emotional scars that this senseless act of violence leaves will never
fully heal. We do hope that by this sentence we are able to give these family
members some solace and closure. They surely deserve it.”

James Robert Tipton, formerly of Sandusky Street, died at
Bradford House II at Brethren Care Village on November 9, 2016.
He was born in Jerusalem, Ohio (Monroe County) to James
Bert and Emily Danford King Tipton on August 29, 1914.
He married Ruth Burcher on June 14, 1939 and they were
married for over 66 years. To them were
born three children, Peggy Lutz (Edwin), James Tipton (Cindy), and Nancy Davis
(Bob). Ruth preceded him in death in
2006. His sister, Libby Tipton Thomas (Louis) also preceded him in death.
Bob graduated from Sunsbury High School which later became
Beallsville High School. He met Ruth in
junior high school and they both attended and graduated from Ohio University
where Bob was a state champion wrestler. He attended the Stout Institute and
did graduate work at Ohio University and Ohio State.
Bob came to Ashland in 1940 when he was hired to teach
Industrial Arts at Ashland High School, after having taught in Buchtel and in
Barnesvillle, Ohio. During one summer
of the WWII era, he took a maintenance job at the Eagle Rubber Company and this
began his long career there where he ultimately became Executive Vice
President. After retiring from Eagle
Rubber in 1979, he joined his friend, Bob Archer, in a new venture when they
purchased an Eagle Rubber subsidiary, “Kent Sporting Goods.” He worked at Kent in New London, Ohio until
1999 when he retired to spend all of his time with his beloved “Susie,” his
name for Ruth, at the home they built on Sandusky Street.
Bob was a talented woodworker and made many pieces of
furniture in their home. Bob and Ruth
enjoyed traveling extensively around the world during their retirement
years. They also enjoyed many trips to
visit their children and grandchildren, Jeffrey Lutz (Pam), Scott Lutz,
Jennifer Tipton Cinkosky (Michael) and Jim Tipton (Tanya ),
Meg Geary (Shawn), Libby Manning (Matt), and Bob Davis (Stephanie.) Bob had 18 great grandchildren and 8 great
great grandchildren as well as three nephews, David (Cari), Joseph (Marney) and
Dan (Anne) Thomas and three nieces, Ruth Ann Owens, Mary Lou Cotton and
Kathleen Moore.
Bob was a long time member of the First Christian Church
where he had served in many roles from Sunday School
teacher to Chairman of the Board.
He was the last remaining member of the Owls Club, a group
of AHS teachers from the 1940’s. He served as a member of the Ashland Noon
Lions, the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, the Masonic Lodge, the Shrine Club, the
Ashland City School Board of Education, the Community
Chest which became the United Appeal, the Ashland County Historical Association
and the YMCA. He was a founding member
of the Ashland County Community Foundation.
He had also served as a board member of the Cleveland Christian Home.
Bob was instrumental in starting the United Appeal (United
Way) in Ashland and was the first President of the organization. It was his
desire to help people who worked hard but who needed help due to their
circumstances. Because his mother was
widowed when he was two years old, he had great compassion for people in
difficult circumstances.
For over 10 years, Bob lived at Brethren Care Village where
he was lovingly cared for by members of the staff who were occasionally
reminded that he was still in charge.
The family is especially grateful to the Bradford House II staff for the
patient and tender care provided to Bob.
Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday,
November 26 at the First Christian Church of Ashland with Pastor Libby Davis
Manning officiating. Friends may call
from 11-1 before the service at the church.

Bob loved Ashland and was grateful for the life he lived
here and for the many wonderful people he met along his journey. Memorial gifts may be made to the ACCF Tipton

Former Carl Hayden basketball
coach Pete Tuccio dies
Pete Tuccio, who moved over as head boys basketball coach at Phoenix Carl Hayden in 1982 to
allow Argie Rhymes to lead the team, died on March 29. He was 87.
Rhymes came to Carl Hayden after
Phoenix Union closed in 1982.
Tuccio, who coached against Rhymes when
he played at Phoenix Union in the late 1960s, became Rhymes' right-hand man
during the Falcons' great run of success through the 1980s and '90s that led to
four state championships.
Tuccio helped Rhymes out at Carl Hayden
as a bench coach up until two years ago, Rhymes said.
"He would still come out at
practice and help out when he could," Rhymes said.
Rhymes said that Tuccio was direct and
caring and always put student before athlete while working with kids.
"When you'd ask him a question,
he'd tell you what he thought," Rhymes said. "He wouldn't beat around
the bush. He'd tell it like it is."
Through all of the success and players
receiving all-state honors, Tuccio was quick to shed perspective.
"He'd say, 'Mr. Rhymes, it's not
about the wins, it's about the students,' '' Rhymes said.
"He'd say, 'You've got to get them ready for life outside of
basketball.' ''
A celebration of Coach Tuccio's life
will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Carl Hayden High, 3333 W. Roosevelt St.,
Phoenix.
