Edgar Earl (Porky) McVay, 88, longtime Mayor of the Village of Stafford,
passed away April 1, 2014 in the Ross Heart Center at the Ohio State University
Hospital, Columbus, OH. He was born in Stafford, on February 20, 1927, a son of
the late Frank Earl and Edith Robinson McVay.
Edgar was a lifetime
resident of Stafford. Growing up, he
assisted his parents with McVay Brothers General
Store and Mill at the Stafford location; the other store was in Harriettsville, OH.
He served as assistant postmaster while his mother was postmaster,
assisted with the family sheep farm operation on Factory Hollow Road, operated
a radio and television sales and service making house calls, owned and operated
school buses for the local school system for many years. He was an
electrician/instrument repairman at the Olin Mathieson Aluminum Facility,
Hannibal, for 28 years, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. He was elected and started
serving as village Mayor on January 1, 1958.
Why the nickname
“Porky”? When Edgar was a little boy,
his mother, Edith, and sister, Georgia, who was 14 years older were always
complaining that his hair was not combed to their liking. One day, while they were away shopping, Edgar
talked his brother-in-law Franklin Hanson, a barber in the Veteran Barber Shop
operated by Franklin Hanson and Everett (Pickle) Briggs on Church Street in
Woodsfield, into giving him a butch hair cut. When the ladies returned, their frustration
from his lack of proper grooming turned to anger. But they eventually got over it. A few days
later, his cousin Sam Robinson came into the store, noticed the drastic change,
picked Edgar up by the heels and while vigorously rubbing his head said, “just
like a porcupine”, thus the nickname “Porky” that lasted his lifetime.
He graduated from the
Stafford High School in 1945, excelled in chemistry and mathematics, was a
basketball star, played on the softball team and participated in class plays
and many other activities. Edgar never
lost his passion for sports. He was
especially interested and loved to watch Ohio State football and basketball on
TV.
After graduation, about
1957, he arranged a successful class picnic at the Stafford Park and again for
their 50th celebration at Skyvue High School.
Through the years, he enjoyed attending the school reunions, with Edgar
and Irma Highman serving as Co-Chairpersons and
Secretary-Treasurer of the Franklin Rural, Stafford village and Skyvue High School annual reunions and carry-in dinner
meetings for eight years, 2006-2013. In
addition, formal education included Associate degrees in radio and television
at DeVry University. He also graduated
from the Hobart School of Welding, Troy, OH.
He enlisted in October
1944 and entered the Army Air Corps after graduation from high school in June
1945. He had basic training, attended
Flight Service School then assigned and served with the 19th Troop Carrier
Squadron in the Pacific Theatre. While
in service, lasting friendships were made, resulting in yearly reunions as well
as other informal meetings at various locations in the USA.
After returning from the service, he played softball and baseball with
other returning veterans with Charlie LaCroix serving
as manager. They played various teams in
the area along with a game or two at the prison in Moundsville, WV. They were considered professional as they
were compensated $5.00 each per game.
During that time, Edgar
became interested in motorcycles, purchasing a new Harley, one of the first in
the county. He seldom rode alone. With R.J. Lawley riding on the buddy seat,
Charley McConnell on the luggage carrier and Edgar at the controls, they would
cruise the countryside on weekend afternoons. Edgar also enjoyed spending time
with other good friends, including John Baker and Donald Lafferre.
Edgar received his
private pilot’s license when he was a young man. His love for flying never ceased. While in the service he joined a flying club. Then in his middle 20s he purchased a yellow
Vagabond airplane, kept it for a while then upgraded to Cessna 172s, owning
several through the years. The last was a red and white Cessna 172
Skyhawk. He sold the airplane in
September 2014.
He had many happy
memories of flying along with other local pilots Raymond Petty, Claude Smith,
Al Reed and Harold Stegner traveling to air shows,
both in and out of state, flying and visiting with pilots at other airports
while enjoying the scenery along the way.
Family and special
friend, Irma Highman also enjoyed short flights as
well as vacations, especially when time was a factor.
Through the years, he
traveled to Canada, Mexico, Hawaii and to many, perhaps all of the states in
the U.S.
Before the new airport
was constructed, Edgar hangared his plane and flew
from the old airport, where the health care facilities are located. Pilots owned their own hangars. He would assist with mowing the sod
runway, using his own Wheel Horse riding tractor mower, when returning from his
shift at the aluminum plant, as resources for maintenance were limited at that
time.
During the winter when
the road to the old facility was impassible to automobile travel, he would walk
the hill to check on his plane and fly, weather permitting.
He was a member of the
Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and life member of the Air Force
Association. Edgar was currently serving on the Monroe County Airport
Authority. He was appointed by the
County Commissioners when the new airport was constructed in 1968, having
served continuously since that time. He
considered the airport an invaluable asset to the county and was always
available to assist in any way, as long as his health permitted.
Edgar served
continuously as mayor of the Village of Stafford for 57 years. Notable accomplishments during that time
included writing and receiving grants for numerous paving projects in the
village as well as requiring the restoration in late 2014 of pavement damaged
by heavy equipment traveling the streets for deep oil and gas drilling in the
area. In recent years he led the effort
to save the post office from leaving the village, giving generously his time
and resources.
In 1984 Edgar became an
advocate for the Monroe County Park District.
He and a few other civic minded people from the community led a
delegation to Columbus in an effort to transfer ownership of the state park in
Stafford to the Monroe County Park District for restoration. The State had damaged and closed the park,
which had been a part of the farm owned and operated many years before by Hugh
Robinson, Edgar’s maternal great-grandfather.
Their persistence was rewarded with a beautiful facility, part of the
Monroe County Park District system, available to the general public for family
picnics and reunions as well as a rest stop to tourists traveling through the
area.
When Edgar was a young
man, he became a member of the Stafford Church of Christ, having attended the
Stafford Methodist Church with family while growing up.
Like his father, Frank,
Edgar was interested and involved in Free and Accepted Masonry. He was a member of Stafford Lodge 300
F&AM for 67 years, served as Worshipful Master in 1953, also served as
Senior Deacon, Junior Deacon and Chaplain; a 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite,
with lifetime membership in at the Valley of Cambridge since 1957; a member of
the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio.
He was a lifetime member
of the American Legion Post 768 since returning from military service, a member
of School Employee Retirees of Ohio, member of AARP since 1986 and member of
Huffman Grange. He was formerly a member
of the Knights of Pythias, Washington County, Citizens Band Radio Club and
Local 5760. Edgar also served as a 4-H
advisor.
On December 7, 1952 he
started dating Irma L. Highman, a young lady from the
Graysville, area he met a few evenings earlier.
While Irma, an employee of the United States Department of Agriculture,
Agricultural Stabilization Service, located in the Monroe County Courthouse at
the time, and Edgar lived a short distance apart, they had never met. Through the years when close friends asked
about how they met, Edgar always told how he and Gene Lafferre
were having a snack at the counter in Bayes Restaurant, Woodsfield, when Irma
walked in wearing a tan knit dress, fur coat and high heels. He took one look and said, “I’m going to date
that girl”. He did and nearly 63 years
later she remains “The Love of His Life”.
In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Georgia McVay
Hanson, brother-in-law Franklin Hanson and an infant sister Mary Maxine.
Survivors whom Edgar
considered “his family” include special friend Irma L. Highman
of Woodsfield, OH, her brother, Eric of the Graysville, OH area, his daughter
Stephanie, her husband Paul Rice, Jr, their daughter, Katie Renee, son Samuel
Edward of Morgantown, WV; also, Eric’s daughter Nichole Highman
(Thomas Ray) and their son Maxton Eric of Westerville, OH. Survivors also include several cousins, good
caring neighbors and many friends.

survived by his wife of 40 years, Carol Ann Mench
Morton. Their children are Timothy David Morton of
Oviedo, Florida and Jenifer Alene Morton (Christopher)
Bunty of Greenville, South Carolina.
Tim was
the brother of Norene E. (Elvin) Ewers, Woodsfield,
Ohio. Jeffrey A. Morton, Elm Grove, West Virginia.

Tim was
preceded in death by his father Duane Leroy Morton and Step Father Howard L.
Piatt.
Tim was
a retired Air force Airman of the 6985th Airborne division. He served his
country with pride. He enlisted in the Air Force before he graduated from
Woodsfield High School.
After Tim’s
retirement from the Air force he was employed by our government through
Raytheon, a national defense company located in Oviedo Florida. Tim was a true
Patriot and love to tell stories of his adventures. Tim traveled the world and
loved defending our freedom. He was loved and respected by everyone he met.
Tim was
honored and laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, followed by a
gathering of his family and friends. Tom Giroir, a
very close friend and fellow Airman gave his Eulogy. "A wisely and
poignantly person taught me years ago that the person who has passed would not
want us to be sad. No, instead they
would want us to be happy for them! They
would ask us to celebrate for them. They
would ask us to celebrate all that they have contributed to the rest of us
before their passing. I have no doubt,
none, that, Tim would agree and he would probably be buying the first round to
that! And, of course, Tim would remark.
Tim would encourage us. Come on folks, let's celebrate all the good times we
had and shared! To Carol and family, as mournful as today is, let's do just
that! Let's celebrate all the excitement
and positive energy that Tim brought into our lives."

Oldemeyer, Donald LeRoy Oldemeyer
Source: The [Boise] Idaho Statesman; June 9, 2015
1924 ~ 2015
Donald
LeRoy Oldemeyer died late in the evening of June 4,
2015. He is survived by his wife, Eileen; son, Neal Oldemeyer
(wife, Nancy); and daughter, Donna Daniels (husband, Rodger). Don also has
seven grandchildren: Lacey Oldemeyer and Briana* Le
Blanc (husband, Brent); Spencer, Bryce and Kyle Oldemeyer;
and Craig and Rick Daniels. He lived long enough to hold his great grandson
Ethan Le Blanc last Christmas. Beverly Decker is his remaining sibling. He was
preceded in death by his brother, Robert Oldemeyer,
and his son, Keith Oldemeyer (wife, Barbara), who
passed away from cancer in 2008.
Don was
born November 7, 1924, in Brush, Colorado to Clarence L. and Gayle E. Oldemeyer. He spent his youth on the family farm and
attended the Brush schools. After graduating from high school he enrolled at
Colorado A & M (now Colorado State University). His schooling was
interrupted by World War II when he spent 32 months in the U.S. Army including
time in Europe with the 87th Infantry Division, which fought in the Battle of
the Bulge.
After being discharged from the Army, Don
returned to college and graduated in December 1948 with a B.S. degree in
Agronomy. On Sept. 12, 1948, he and Eileen Blankenship were married in Ft.
Collins, Colorado. Together they drove to Pennsylvania where Don attended
Pennsylvania State College and received his Ph.D. in Agronomy.
His
first job was with the Irrigation Experiment Station at Prosser, Washington as
an assistant agronomist. In June 1954 he accepted a job with the Amalgamated
Sugar Company at Nyssa, Oregon where he spent the remainder of his professional
career focused on sugar beet research, particularly beet seed development. He
was very active in the sugar beet industry. A highlight of his career was when
he was awarded an Honorary Membership in the American Society of Sugar Beet
Technologists along with his brother at the February 1991 biennial meeting.
Don was
active in the Nyssa United Methodist Church, serving in several different
positions. He was also involved in the Nyssa Lions Club for many years. He
served six years on the Nyssa City Council and served as mayor from 1975 to
1976.
Don's
hobbies were camping, bird hunting and fishing. He was particularly fond of chukar hunting until the hills became too steep to climb.
Rose growing was his favorite part of gardening, while taking pride in his
beautiful green lawn.
For
those who knew and worked with Don closely, it should be no surprise that he
wrote the comments above. Always humble, meticulous and ever-thoughtful, he
even wanted his passing to be as easy as possible for those he left behind. The
family does want you to know that he was an inspiration to us all. He left a
legacy of professional excellence, public service, and commitment to friends
and family. His love and respect for the great outdoors has filtered throughout
his children and grandchildren in their choices for recreation and occupation.
Mostly, we want you to know that he loved deeply, particularly his wife,
Eileen, to whom he was married for nearly 67 years.
The
family would like to thank the caregivers from Advanced Home Health Care and
Spring Creek Assisted Living for the wonderful care they have given Don over
the last several years and also those from Harrison's Hope Hospice that helped
guide us through the last few months.

Painter,
Jill Painter, nee Christman
Source: The Lake City [Florida] Reporter - Sunday, December
20, 2015
Jill
Painter, whose husband died in a July motorcycle crash, loses her battle with
breast cancer. 'I'll see you soon, honey'
JILL PAINTER, 53, survived the
motorcycle accident that killed her husband, Tom, in July, and lived for several
months after. On Dec. 4, she died of the breast cancer that had been diagnosed
five years prior.
Now, those who knew them mourn. Her
daughter, Jackie Touchton, Jackie's husband, Robert,
and several family friends remember her for her strength, determination and
caring nature.
"Anyone who met her knew how
strong of a fighter she was," Jackie said. "She fought until the end,
and now she gets to be with Tom, my dad."
On July 3, Tom and Jill Painter were on
their motorcycle when a pickup truck hit them from behind and sent them flying
off. Tom died the same day from injuries sustained in the accident.
Phish Heads owner Toni Crenshaw, a
longtime friend, described Jill as someone who tried to make the best of her situation
and who had a good, somewhat morbid sense of humor in the face of her cancer.
She didn't see the point in dwelling on
her pain, Crenshaw said, when "it was what it was."
When Jill was living with Jackie and
Robert earlier this year after the accident, Robert walked in and found Jill
sitting in the living room, he said. When he asked her how she was doing, her
reply was, in a deadpan wit friends said was a
trademark of hers, "Like I've been hit by a truck."
Where they
left a mark
The Painters were well-liked in Columbia
County. They contributed to many local charities and
had a large group of friends and acquaintances, many of whom they saw often at
Phish Heads, a favorite local hang-out spot.
Crenshaw and Sugar Cakery
owner Amy Strickland, another close friend, recalled nights full of laughter,
off-color jokes and sports-related camaraderie. The Painters were particularly
fans of the Gators, friends said.
"When you stop drinking, when you
get to the tough times, Jill wasn't just an acquaintance," Strickland
said. "She was there for you, during fun times or during hard times, she
was always there. There were a lot of other people who weren't around. You
realize who your true friends are. Tom and Jill always made that list."
Other friends of the Painters, Bruce
Croft and Rick Buchanan, also joined them frequently. Buchanan remembered Jill
as a "wonderful, strong woman" and said she and Tom were
"perfect for each other."
Croft said he had always enjoyed their
company no matter what they ended up doing each day.
"We were just good friends,"
Croft said. "We talked about life and laughed and joked. They were good
people."
Crenshaw said Phish Heads was always a
central meeting place for the Painters and other mutual friends.
"When Tom and Jill went out on
their motorcycle in the afternoon, they always ended up here," Crenshaw
said. "This was the meeting place. The final resting place, so to speak.
But they were a part of this community, not just Phish Heads. They left a mark
at any place they went."
Vegas and
bonfires
Tom and Jill "had always lived on
the edge," Robert said. They loved going on adventures, even when that
meant staying home on a Saturday for a bonfire with friends, beer and blues.
"On Saturdays, they'd do a
bonfire," Robert said. "They'd have S'mores, and some blues. They'd
have a Chevrolet out by the fire, both doors open, and have Stevie Ray Vaughan
and B.B. King playing all night."
Jackie recounted Tom and Jill's wedding
in 2010, which she said only happened because Jill's mother asked Tom to do it.
"They got married in Vegas by
Elvis," she said. "They got married on my grandmother's birthday
because she asked Tom to marry my mom. Tom didn't want to get married anymore.
He was perfectly content the way they were. But my grandmother passed away, and
the last thing she said was to marry [Jill], so he did."
In Vegas, Jackie said they had a great
time, and then Tom and Jill went to the Grand Canyon for their honeymoon.
They had other plans to travel even
more, Robert said, which were cut tragically short when Tom passed away.
"They had so many more
plans," Robert said. "That was one thing Jill kept saying over and over. 'It wasn't supposed to happen like this.' "
The bucket
list
After Tom's death, the family began
collecting donations around the area, and everyone who gave painted a picture
of daisies, which was Jill's favorite flower. The money went toward paying
Jill's medical bills and other costs, Jackie said. The daisy paintings were
hung on the wall of Phish Heads, where they remain.
The family and some friends pooled some
of the money to put up a billboard as a tribute to Tom. It warns passing motorists
on State Road 47 to be safe on the road.
The billboard has a picture of Tom and
Jill on their motorcycle and lists Tom's birth and death dates. Now that Jill
has passed away, too, they plan to add her name and birth and death dates to
the billboard as well as a pink ribbon to symbolize fighting breast cancer.
Jill was in St. Augustine with Jackie
and another family member when the billboard went up in November. That was the
last item on their bucket list, her daughter said.
"She wanted to go to St.
Augustine," Jackie said. "We drove her around town, and she smiled
from ear to ear."
"She had been in the hospital the
week before," Robert said. "That was the big question mark around it,
whether she could go at all. She said, 'To hell with it, I am going.' She had a
great time and came back and went right back into the hospital."
But she did make one stop before
checking back into the hospital.
"She came home from St. Augustine
that night. She said she went to see the billboard," Strickland said.
"She drove out there and stood underneath it for about 45 minutes. Just standing, underneath it, looking up at it. That was her
memorial for Tom. She didn't get to have one because she was fighting for her
life in the hospital. She wanted to remember him by something physical."
The day before Jill died, Robert said,
she was looking at her phone and Tom's picture came up on the phone's contacts.
"It was comforting for her to see that,
like he's watching over her," Robert said. "It happened the day
before she passed. She just happened to be going through Facebook on her phone,
and his picture popped up. She kissed it and said, 'I'll see you soon, honey.'
