loved dogs and had canine friends all over town, each one eagerly looking
forward to his visits and the treats he always carried in his pockets.

2012. Born at Poudre Valley Hospital on March 12, 1941, to Orville and Beryle
Irene (Luhr) Oldemeyer, John was raised in Johnstown, CO graduating from
Johnstown High in 1959. During high school, he participated in football,
basketball, track, band, chorus, and the drama club.
He attended CU and graduated from CSU with Bachelor and
Masters degrees in wildlife biology. Before beginning
his Masters research, he married his college sweetheart, Carole Ann Kiplinger.
They moved to Yellowstone, Montana, where John studied winter ecology of big
horn sheep.
After receiving his degree, John and Carole moved to
Lakewood, Colorado; John accepted a job as center statistician for the Denver
Wildlife Research Center of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
While in Colorado, John and Carole had three children:
Nancy Lynn, Janice Kay, and John Bradley. Their respective families gave him
his five grandchildren, the lights of his life.
In 1971, the research center opened a field station in
Kenai, Alaska. There, John conducted research on moose habitat as part of a
major program in cooperation with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in the
Kenai North Wildlife Refuge. During their seven years in Kenai, the family took
a year sabbatical at Penn State University, where John received a Ph.D. in
Forest Resources.
In 1978 the family transferred to Fort Collins. John
studied effects of cattle grazing in northwestern Nevada, early winter habitat
use of mountain caribou in northern Idaho, and effects of cattle grazing on
desert tortoises and their habitat in southern Nevada and southeastern
California. John also served in administrative capacities as Chief of the
Ecology Section of Endangered Species and as assistant Director of the Research
Center. He retired in 1997.
The family began building a log cabin in Silver Gate,
Montana just outside the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park in
1986. By the time Carole and John retired, they moved to Silver Gate to
experience Yellowstone in winter for one year. Five years later, they returned
to Fort Collins for winters and spent summers in Montana.
In Silver Gate, Carole and John were active at the local
church and on the local EMS team. In Fort Collins, they played with the English
