Slates, Alexandra Slates

Source: The  Independent, [Massillon, Ohio] - Monday, March 21, 2011

Crash   victim   remembered   with   service

NORTH  CANTON As the sun lit the stained-glass windows of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Chapel, Walsh University students and staff remembered Alexandra Slates as someone who set out to illuminate the lives of others.

Slates, a 22-year-old psychology and counseling student from Navarre, was killed in a car crash Jan. 11.

Inside the small chapel, some of Slates' friends wiped tears from their eyes while others looked on in grief Sunday during a memorial Mass.

As they gazed toward the altar, a photo collage of Slates looked back at them.

At one point during the memorial, family members held large strips of paper scrawled with the words "strength, courage, passion, commitment and love" under a small flame, letting go of each one as they burned up and then burned out.

The Rev. John Tully and family members wore lavender.

For Tully, it is the color prescribed by the church for spring, the season of change and renewal. It was Alex's favorite color.

"The great challenge of the university is to understand how by changing yourself and applying it to the world around you, you can change the whole world," Tully said.

"Alex invested herself in doing just that." "She truly wanted to help people in her life," Miguel Chavez, director of campus ministry, said. "Alex was a mentor, who sought to teach by example and challenge others in excellence." Slates, a senior commuter student, was enrolled in a bachelor's and master's degree program for psychology and counseling at Walsh. She was president of the Psi Chi Psychology Honors Program.

A 2007 Perry High School graduate, Slates excelled at school and on the softball field. The daughter of Randy and Sue Slates, she had two sisters, Samantha Ayers and Tatum Slates.

"It's reliving a lot, but it's good," Randy Slates said about the Mass. "There was a little bit more closure." He described his daughter as "compassionate" and "loving." He recalled one Christmas when Alexandra was 16, and she convinced her parents to sponsor a child in Peru through Compassion International, telling them not to buy Christmas presents so they could afford it. Two years later, she sponsored a child of her own from Africa.

"She had the biggest heart," Randy said after the memorial Mass. "She just loved everybody."

Tubaugh, Jeffrey Brock Tubaugh

Source:  The Paul Funeral Home, Washington, North Carolina; June, 2011

Jeffrey Brock Tubaugh, born March 1, 1961, went to heaven Friday, June 3, 2011 after a courageous 6 year battle with melanoma. Jeff is loved and missed by his family including his parents, Harry and Betty Tubaugh, his wife of 25 years, Shelley, and his two daughters, Sarah and Rebecca. Other family members include: sister and brother in law Jennifer and Nick Maraveyias of Wilmington, brother and sister in law, Stephen and Hannah Tubaugh and nephews Jason and Phillip Maraveyias and Hodges and John Charles Tubaugh.

Jeff was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Washington. Jeff was a graduate of Washington High School, attended NC State and graduated from Elon University. He was a manager at National Spinning for 12 years. He most recently worked for Beaufort Community College as the Customized Training Coordinator. Jeff was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity, a Mason, as well as past member, President and Paul Harris Fellow of the Washington Rotary. He was a past board member of the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation and current Board President of the Shepard Cancer Foundation. His time with the Cancer Foundation has meant so much to Jeff because it was a way he felt he could give back just a little of the blessings he has received and help others who were less fortunate and who were suffering. Jeff had a tremendous love of all things outdoors: hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, boating, canoeing, and mountain climbing - he diligently and happily shared this with his family, passing along this love. He also had a great spirituality and enjoyed participating in the Walk to Emmaus and his Wednesday morning mens' reunion bible study group. He also loved his time with the Senior High School Sunday School Class at church where he was delighted to share and grow with the young men and women. He was the assistant coach for girls' varsity basketball at Terra Ceia Christian School, which brought him great joy as well, helping them win their conference title. He always said how much he has learned from these wonderful kids at church, at TCCS and his own sweet girls.

Jeff would not let himself be defined by his cancer but instead he viewed it as a challenge to overcome and to spur him on to seize the day and live fully in the present. As a family, he made sure we traveled and enjoyed fun time together no matter what we were doing, that would make memories for a life time for all of us. He gained strength and peace from God, family and friends and from God's creation, nature. He was most happy by the pond, in the woods, or on a mountain trail. He planned and planted our farm with live oaks, an orchard with peach, apple and plum trees and a grove of pecans - knowing that he would not see them mature, but leaving them as a gift for the future for all of us. "Nothing fancy," he would say, just real. Just like him.

A visitation will be held at Paul Funeral Home in Washington from 5 to 7 pm on Monday, June 6. The celebration of life service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 7 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, Jeff would like memorials to be given to the Shepard Cancer Foundation or First United Methodist Church of Washington, NC.

She was born on March 12, 1919 in Lake View, Ohio, a daughter of the late Theodore Valentine and Maude Lilly (Slain) Dowden. The family moved to Mt. Liberty, Ohio where she spent her formative years.

Known as Jo to friends and family, she met and married James Boyd in 1936, and was widowed in 1939, with one son, David. She went to work for the White Cross Hospital and Timken Roller Bearing Company in Columbus where she met Robert Workman, a soldier stationed in Columbus (Fort Hayes). They were married in 1941 and had two sons, Stephen and Gregory.

As a wife of a career soldier, she had the full responsibility of raising her young family by herself for many years. She overcame the many difficulties involved in frequently moving her young family from location to location, even to Japan by ship in 1950.

Given her accomplishments over the years, the one that brought the most joy to her was learning to drive and obtain a driver’s license at the age of 65.

After Robert’s retirement from the military the family moved to Monroe County, Ohio. While there Jo was involved in church and community life and worked at the K V store in Woodsfield. Robert died in 1985, and a few years later she moved to Cambridge to be closer to her son, Stephen and his wife Cathy and their family.

In Cambridge, she enjoyed playing euchre at the senior center. She also enjoyed being a help to others and often volunteered at AARP or senior center functions. She loved her family and enjoyed when they could visit. They always knew she would have fresh baked bread and there would be homemade snicker doodle cookies in the freezer that delighted young and old alike.

Jo was a member of the Woodsfield United Methodist Church, Senior Citizens Center, Local AARP Chapter and Public Employee Retirees, Inc.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, James Boyd and Robert K. Workman, a brother, Herbert Dowden and sisters, Ruth C. Hulse and Helen White.
