Hogue, Norman William BILL Hogue

Source:  The Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Ohio; 18 Apr 2011

Norman William “Bill” Hogue passed away Sunday, April 17th, 2011 just before midnight with his daughter at his side.  He was born September 18th, 1945 in Barnesville, OH.  He was a long time resident of Woodsfield.

He was the third of four children born to Norman and Ruth Dougherty Hogue and as the only son was the object of adoration of all his sisters despite his tendencies to be a bit of a mischief-maker in his youth.  They also admired him as a man of character.

Kaye will never forget the time he picked the lock to her bedroom and stole her love letters to sell on the street to make a nickel.  Carol will be forever grateful for the time he cared for her daughters while her husband was stationed overseas.  His baby sister, Patty, remembers as children that he sold her new bike for parts but as a young man how he was a strict disciplinarian regarding potential suitors.

He felt blessed to have found such amazing life long friends.  In their teenage years, he and the boys were known to wreak a little havoc.  Molly always enjoyed hearing stories from Dave Weisend and John Strickling about corn shocking, the girls they dated and the wild rides they took in the cars that they traded.

Bill was so proud of his daughter Molly and she loves him so much.  She will miss their frequent conversations, as well as his advice over the years.  He was so happy that Molly found a gentleman and a man of character in her husband, David Clarkson.  He was grateful for Molly’s best friend, Dr. Jenna Hirsh, for her friendship to his daughter and for her medical guidance through the past two years.

His lady friend, Rhea Hupp, knew she had met quite a gentleman in Bill and he cared so deeply for her.  Even his beloved sisters and daughter got chastised for upsetting Bill’s natural order of things, but Rhea could get away with anything.

He was a 1965 graduate of Woodsfield High School where he honed his great skill of making friends as all could attest.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Forrestal during the Vietnam War Era.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW #5303.  He was also a member of the Moose and the Eagles.  Bill enjoyed listening to all kinds of music and sharing a beer and stories with friends…especially Uncle Dalton.

Friends received from 10 a.m. until time of memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23rd, 2011 at Bauer and Turner Funeral Home Woodsfield, Ohio with Rev. Susan Lehosky officiating.   Military services conducted by the Belmont Veterans Council. Contributions in memory of Bill should be made to the Woodsfield High School Alumni Association in care of Donna Parr, 37120 CR 2 East, Woodsfield, OH 43793.

His last year of service was spent in the Honor Guard Burial Detail at Granite City.

Steve met his wife, Linda, in 1970 and they married in 1973.

Soon after their marriage Steve became the potter in the historic village of Bishop Hill and in 1978 the couple moved there and established The Colony Pottery and Design in a colony building. Ultimately they were able to purchase the Administration Building.

In 1990 Steve accepted the position of site interpreter at Carl Sandburg State Historic Site in Galesburg. Almost 20 years later he retired from the Sandburg site and his position as site manager.

Steve's love of music brought him to First Baptist Church in Cambridge, where for more than 20 years he served as choirmaster and organist. Each holiday season Steve and the choir would invite the entire community to join them in the celebration of the Lord's everlasting love.

Steve and his wife, Linda, were the 2010 recipients of the Olov Isaksson Award. This award honors individuals who contribute to preserving Swedish American relations.

In his heart, Steve loved all of God's creatures. His endless love manifested itself in the joy he felt for all of the cats that were part of his life.

Steve will join in heaven his two sons and his father, Willard J. Holden, who preceded him in death.

Throughout the eight years of his battle with cancer, which he believed was the result of defoliants used in Vietnam, he never complained. He took each day as it came and faced each of those days with the grace and dignity by which he lived his entire life.

Mr. Holden is survived by his wife, Linda M. Holden; his sister, Patricia Fossberg; and his mother, Betty Jean.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Bishop Hill Colony Church. Memorial donations can be made to Bishop Hill Heritage Association to be applied towards restoration of the 1854 Steeple Building.
