Cause of fatal fire unknown

Investigator says everything at Reno area home was burnt too badly to yield any clues

Investigators believe the fire that claimed the lives of two Reno area farmers was accidental, but the cause cannot be identified, according to the Ohio Fire Marshal's office.

A release issued by the office on Tuesday afternoon said the cause has been ruled as undetermined.

"Investigators were unable to pinpoint an exact cause for the fire, but say the cause is most likely accidental based on their on-scene examination and the information provided by the Montgomery County Coroner's Office," the release says.

The coroner's office examined the bodies of Robert "Bob" Barth, 69, and his wife, Evalena, 66, who died in the fire that burnt their 685 County Nine Road home to the ground Monday morning.

Shane Cartmill, public information officer for the fire marshal's office, said there was "nothing to indicate a crime whatsoever" at the scene.

Reno fire Chief Dan Ritchey said it appeared the fire started in the basement of the house, where his department extinguished an electrical fire a couple of years ago. However, the damage to the house was so extensive after Monday's fire that it was virtually impossible to determine the cause.

Fact Box

At a glance

The Ohio State Fire Marshal's office ruled a Monday fire that killed two Reno residents as undetermined.

The office says the fire appears to have been accidental.

Homeowners Robert "Bob" and Evalena Barth were killed in the blaze.

"You just can't tell. Everything was burnt so bad," Ritchey said.

Ritchey said Monday it did not appear the home had a smoke detector. The fire marshal's release says family members said there were smoke detectors inside but they did not know if they were working.

The Barths lived on 350 acres, mostly in Newport Township, belonging to the family, which operates Barth Farms and Milk Hauling. The business was started in 1950 by Bob Barth's father, Harold.

Bob and Evalena Barth were active in the community, particularly the Washington County Farm Bureau. That's where Debbie Burkhart, a Muskingum Township resident and former organizational director and board member for the farm bureau, got to know them.

"They'll both be sorely missed," she said.

Burkhart and Evalena Barth used to go to conferences together. Evalena Barth was quick to lend a helping hand, Burkhart said.

"She was an avid supporter of the farm bureau, an avid community person and always willing to help anybody and everybody," she said.

Jeremy Barth, the couple's nephew, described his aunt and uncle as "down-home country people (who) care about everybody."

Jeremy Barth's father, Gerald, was partners with his brother, Bob, in running the farm. Bob Barth's son, Troy, and his son, Wyatt, are also heavily involved with the farm, although Jeremy said everyone in the family lends a hand when needed.

The family has received an outpouring of support in the form of phone calls, online messages and more, Jeremy Barth said.

"This community has been really strong for us right now," he said. "And they (Bob and Evalena Barth) would do the same."

Wayne City IL Letter Carrier Killed in Collision With Freight Train

Source:  Published by FELA lawyer Gordon, Elias & Seely, LLP  [online]; 28 Jul 2010

WAYNE CITY IL – A mail carrier was killed when his vehicle collided with a Canadian National freight train in Farrington Township in Jefferson County, Illinois on Tuesday, July 27, 2010. The accident occurred at the railroad crossing on Holiday Rd. near the Papertown Ag Service plant just west of the Wayne County line and about a half-mile south of the Marion County line.

Wayne City is located in Wayne County, in central Illinois about 151 miles south of Springfield, about 223 miles south of Peoria, about 133 miles south of Decatur and about 277 miles south of Chicago.

The victim was identified as 56 year-old Phillip Beeson, from Cisne, IL, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning while Beeson was on his mail route.

An article at the WJBD Radio website indicated that Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks commented on the incident. Marks said that Beeson’s Ford Explorer was struck in the drivers side and was dragged down the tracks six-tenths of a mile. The article went on to say that the vehicle caught fire in the process and that Beeson was pinned inside.

After the vehicle was hit by the train, it burst into flames on impact and then was dragged down the tracks from the crossing at Holiday Road before coming to a stop near East Heartland Road.

No one on the train was injured and there were no passengers in Beeson’s vehicle.

After speaking with Canadian National Railroad personnel and other witnesses it was determined that Beeson was going eastbound on Holiday Road when it pulled into the path of the oncoming train. The train was moving on the tracks in a southbound direction when it collided with the vehicle. The engineer was unable stop when it struck the SUV.

Firemen from Orchardville, Webber Township, Bluford and Jefferson Rural responded to the incident to put out the fire and to help remove Beeson’s body from the demolished vehicle. Illinois State Police and Jefferson County deputies also responded to the incident. County Coroner Marks said that the cause of Beeson’s death remains under investigation.

This is a very unfortunate and tragic accident. Funeral services at Hosselton Funeral Home in Cisne are pending for Beeson. He had been delivering mail out of the Wayne City Post Office for the last 15 years.

The accident remains under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and coroner’s office. Sheriff Roger D. Mulch said that the railroad crossing at Holiday Rd. was clearly marked and posted with a Yield sign.

Some of Buddy's final days were spent in the home of his sister Sherry, where she loved and pampered him, along with his sister Sandy, and his close friend and brother-in-law, Rick Moran.

Doan, Garry "Todd" Doan

Source:  findagrave.com; July, 2010

The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.

Garry Todd Doan was given unto this life June 17, 1973, and taken at the age of 37 on July 11, 2010.

He was born on the Air Force Base in Blytheville, Ark., to Gary and Deanna Sargent Doan. One of our fondest memories is when he learned to make a sentence, he called himself a "Hair Force Baby," meaning Air Force Baby.

He married Terri Lynn Moorehead of Parkersburg in 2007, a loving wife who was helping him to raise his three children, Jessamyn, Joselyn and Jayme. He was a wonderful father to her two daughters, Lexis* and Cadence.* They had just been blessed with a new baby son, Jadon Cole. Being Christian by faith he was raising their six children to walk in the ways of our Lord.

He is survived by his parents; one brother, Jamie (Melissa) Doan, Lowell, Ohio; one sister, Linde (Joe) Satterfield, Columbus, Ohio; three grandparents, Delmer Doan, Marietta, Ohio, Herbert Sargent, Colorado, Ernestine Frye, Marietta, Ohio; four uncles, Scott (Christie) Sargent, Marietta, Ohio, Lyndall (Karen) Sargent, Virginia, Shane Sargent, Athens, Ohio; two aunts, Barbara Doan Palmer (Ralph) Marietta, Ohio, Peggy Doan Metz (Jim); and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Dora Doan; aunt, Marcie Doan Sargent; and baby, Brandon Morrison.

He worked for Jim Caldwell Builders.

Todd loved nature and took advantage of the free things God has given us to enjoy by taking his children to the woods and creeks to teach them about nature.

He saw combat in Iraq and proudly served his country with the 463 Army Reserves. He was laid to rest in Moss Run Cemetery with full military honors.

He shared these thoughts on one of his Internet blogs, "The American soldier is a hero of heroes to me, there are so few in this country that will stand up and defend what we have ... FREEDOM!  So needless to say, I'm proud to be a soldier and I get pretty upset when I hear about people in our own country that don't like what we do or what we stand for!" - Author, Todd Doan.

Thank you, everyone, for every single kind word and deed extended in this time of great sorrow.
