Berry, Richard Adlai Berry (Dec 25, 1930 - Feb 19, 2009)

Richard Adlai Berry, 78, passed away Thursday, Feb 19, 2009, at Brown Memorial Home in Circleville, OH, after a period of declining health. He was born in Meadville, PA, on Dec 25, 1930, to George Harold & Grace Elizabeth Rundell Berry.
He was a graduate of Erie Technical High School in Erie, PA, and served in the US Navy. His aviation career began with dirigibles in Akron, OH, and continued as a flight test engineer with Lockheed CA Company. He also worked again with the Navy on ASW aircraft. His hobbies were his vehicles, flying, boating, hunting, and doing anything mechanical.
He is survived by his children, Anne Wade, of Circleville, OH, Alan (Wendie Wertz) Berry of Massillon, OH, and Gene (Carolee Rafn) Berry of Roanoke, VA; grandchildren Kate Wade (Jeremy) Addy of Burien, WA, John Wade of Columbus, OH, Allison Berry and Ashley Berry, both of Canal Fulton, OH, Melissa Berry of Charlottesville, VA, and Stephen Berry and Eric Berry, both of Roanoke, VA; great-grandson Preston Addy of Burien, WA; sisters Nancy (Anthony) Franczkowski of Elgin, PA, and Linda (Joseph) Filipowicz of New Iberia, LA; wives Lavona Dye Weber of Woodsfield, OH and Beverly Bristow Berry of Ventura, CA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1966, his father in 1967, and his brother Hugh in 1975. Private services will be held by the family at a later date.

 

Betts, Zelda M. Betts nee Weber

Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, April 26, 2009

Zelda M. Betts, age 95, of Lewisville, OH, died Saturday April 25, 2009 at the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born in Monroe County Ohio July 22, 1913, a daughter of the late David H. and Clara Yoho Weber.

She was a graduate of Lewisville High School May 6, 1932. Zelda joined the Buchanan Presbyterian Church on July 17, 1932 and remained active in the church until 85 years of age. She had served as Clerk of Session for 18 years, Sunday school teacher, superintendent of Sunday school and Elder. She was the oldest living member of the Church. Her hobby was sewing since the age of 10. She quilted 99 quilts for friends and neighbors plus many for the family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elbert Wesley Betts (1990) whom she married Oct. 30, 1935. Four brothers Raymond, Floyd, Willard and Irvin. 2 sisters viola Winland and Laura Fisher. 1 Grandson, Danny Betts. 3 nieces Geraldine Winland, Doris Weber, and Ruth Weber. 1 nephew Neal Evan Weber.

She is survived by 5 sons; Darrel (Dianne) Betts of Newark, Russell (Mary) Betts of Lewisville, Delmas (Lucy) Betts of Lewisville, Ronald Betts of Lewisville, and Gary Betts of Woodsfield. 2 brother Lawrence and Earl Weber. 19 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Friends received from (2-4) & (6-9) p.m. Monday at the Bauer-Turner Funeral Home 100 S. Paul St. Woodsfield, Ohio where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday April 28, 2009. Interment in the Buchanan Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

 

Laps, Eugene "Gene" L. Laps

Laps, Eugene "Gene" L., age 77, of Canton passed away Friday morning [April 10, 2009] at Aultman Hospital. He was born on June 29, 1931 in Massillon to the late Frank and Beulah (Harmon) Laps. Gene was a 1951 graduate of Washington High School. He was a United States Air Force Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. Gene retired from the Timken Company in November 1992 following 26 years of service as a aircraft mechanic. He was the chief of maintenance for the Timken Flight Department at the Akron Canton Airport. He had attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Gene enjoyed cars, airplanes and was a devoted family man.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Woutat) Laps with whom he celebrated 56 years of marriage on November 8, 2008; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas G. (Robbi) Laps of Waite Hill, OH, Larry D. (Tela) Laps of Canton, Todd A. (Shelly) Laps of Massillon; daughter and son-in-law, Linda L. (Robert) Dehnke of Massillon; brothers, Frank, Donald and David Laps all of Massillon; sisters, Eileen Zeller and Ruth Ann Turskey both of Massillon and Genny Hammon of Circleville, OH; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Ralph Laps. Funeral services celebrating Gene's life will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Arnold Lynch Funeral Home with Fr. William Kraynak officiating. Calling hours will be Monday from 6 8 p.m. Interment will follow the services at Calvary Cemetery. Piatt, Ethel M. Piatt

Ethel M. Piatt, 95, formerly of Graysville, Ohio went home to be with the Lord Saturday January 24, 2009 at the Heartland of Marietta Nursing Home, Marietta, Ohio. She was born at Graysville, Ohio on November 30, 1913 a daughter of the late Aaron and Martha Cline Smith.

Ethel was a retired demonstrator for Stanley Home Products with 42 years of service; a member of the Graysville United Methodist Church, Graysville, Ohio; a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Masterton Chapter #584 and a former member of the Graysville Grange #2681.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Piatt on August 28, 1977; two sons, Victor Piatt and Melvin Piatt; two sisters, Mary Cline and Gladys Highman; two grandsons, Gary Watters and Terry McConnell and a son-in-law, Jimmy Berga.

Surviving are three daughters: Eleanor Jennings of Cambridge, Ohio, Faye Berga of New Matamoras, Ohio and Carol (Gary Dean) McConnell of Lowell, Ohio; two sons: Richard (Alice) Piatt of Graysville, Ohio and Heber (Linda) Piatt of Graysville, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, Ohio from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2009 where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2009 with Rev. Madlynne Webber and Rev. James Porter officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, near Graysville, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Graysville United Methodist Church, c/o Tina Loch, 38894 State Route 26, Graysville, Ohio 45734. Eastern Star services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

 

Vanwy, Debra M Vanwy (April 17, 1958 - February 13, 2009)

Debra M. Vanwy, 50, of 44512 S.R. 78, Woodsfield, Ohio died Friday, February 13, 2009 at the Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville, West Virginia. She was born in Niles, Ohio on April 17, 1958 a daughter of John and Joan Day Roe of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Myron an Marilyn Vanwy of Ft. Myers, Florida. She was a 1976 graduate of Woodsfield High School, Woodsfield, Ohio; a retired employee of the Conalco Corporation, Hannibal, Ohio with 28 years of service; was the owner/operator of Ms. Daisies Shoppe in Clarington, Ohio and was a Methodist by faith.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, Michael Bull Marling of the home; one son: Ryan Vanwy of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; one sister: Penny (Cecil) Crum of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Friends will be received at the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 State Route 78 West, Woodsfield, Ohio from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 2009 with memorial services at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Weber, Lavona Anne "Bonnie" Weber nee Dye

Lavona Anne "Bonnie" Weber, 77, of 216 Eastern Avenue, Woodsfield, Ohio, passed away Saturday morning, October 3, 2009, at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born in Barberton, Ohio, on October 18, 1931, to Harry Edwin and Hazel Evelina Hill Dye.
Bonnie was a 1949 graduate of Coventry High School. She was a former librarian at the Woodsfield Elementary School and a retired clerk for the former City Loan & Savings Company, Woodsfield, Ohio. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Woodsfield, Ohio; a member of the Garden Club and also served as President of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post 5109, Woodsfield, Ohio. In recent years, she did volunteer work including the local food bank, women's center, and elementary school. She was also a Sunday school teacher. Her hobbies were gardening, reading, traveling, doing crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Anne Wade of Circleville, Alan (Wendie Wertz) Berry of Massillon, and Gene (Carolee Rafn) Berry of Roanoke, VA; grandchildren Kate Wade (Jeremy) Addy of Burien, WA, John Wade of Columbus, Allison Berry and Ashley Berry, both of Canal Fulton, Melissa Berry of Charlottesville, VA, Stephen Berry of Winston-Salem, NC, and Eric Berry of Roanoke, VA; great-grandson Preston Addy of Burien, WA; sister Dorothy (Edward) Pavkov of Norton; aunt Marie Dye Hensel of Doylestown; husband Urban W. "Midge" Weber of Woodsfield; step-sons Bill (Donna Dillon) Weber of Jerusalem, Ed Weber of Woodsfield; step-grandchildren Jennifer Weber (Jeff) Wise of Barnesville, Carly Weber (Jeremy) Evans of Galena; step-great-grandchildren Ethan and Brody Wise, both of Barnesville, JJ and Carson Evans, both of Galena and two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her father in 1969 and her mother in 1988.
There will be a Celebration of Life service at First Presbyterian Church, Woodsfield with Rev. Susan Lehosky officiating on Thursday, October 8, at 11 am followed immediately by a reception at the church. There will be no calling hours or graveside service. Private inurnment will be at Rings Mill Cemetery near Jericho, Ohio. Arrangements by the Watters Funeral Home, 37501 S.R. 78 West, Woodsfield, Ohio.
