Jan 2009
SALDOTNA, Alaska, Judith Ann
Schmitz-Schell, 61, of Saldotna, Alaska, died Dec. 20, 2008.
Memorial services were Tuesday at the
Church of Christ in Saldotna. Burial of ashes to be dispersed in the Colorado
Rocky Mountains in June 2009, with family and friends present.
Mrs. Schmitz-Schell was born Jan. 24,
1947, at Kansas City, Mo., to Joseph V. and Consuella 'Connie' Farrenkopf
Schmitz of Aurora.
Survivors of the immediate family
include her husband, Dennis W. Schell; a son and daughter-in-law, James and
Tara Schell of Sterling, Alaska; a daughter, Lynn Christine Schell of Eugene,
Ore.; her mother of Aurora; six sisters and four brothers-in-law, Barbara and
John Roessig of Greeley, Colo., Teresa and Don Grint of Lenexa, Kan., Catherine
Schmitz of Kaysville, Utah, Loretta Schmitz of Hastings, Cynthia and John
Morris of Grand Island, Diane and Patrick Fischer of Loveland, Colo.; four
brothers and sisters-in-law, Mathew and Debbie Schmitz of Hastings, Anthony and
Lynn Schmitz of Nekoma, Kan., Michael and Patty Schmitz of Overland Park, Kan.,
and Peter and Kim Schmitz of Traverse City, Mich.
Additional survivors include
grandchildren, Ranger and Elizabeth Ivy of Sterling, Alaska; and many nieces
and nephews.
Just a few weeks shy of her 62nd
birthday, Judith died peacefully at her home on Dec. 20. Judy was born second
into a large family of 13 children that her parents created in Grand Island.
While Judy desperately loved and was dedicated to her family, her fierce
independence was evident throughout her life.
Judy grew up in Grand Island, attending
St. Mary's Grade School and Central Catholic High School, graduating in 1964.
She crashed through Central Catholic with academic high honors, shared her love
of the Lord with her angelic voice in choir and drama, but most notably became
the first female vice president of her class. Judy married Dennis Schell on
Feb. 22, 1969, at Grand Island. She then attended St. Catherine's School of
Nursing in Omaha and graduated in 1968, as a registered nurse. Judy began her
long nursing career at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island. Her career
continued in Norfolk, Va., Loveland, Colo., and finally in Saldotna, Alaska,
where she retired. Over the years, Judy worked in several departments within
each hospital, her favorite being the recovery room. She treasured being the initial
resource to patients' transition from surgery to recovery.
Living in Colorado, Judy immediately
fell in love with the mountains and came to love backpacking, hunting and
fishing alongside her husband. Together they spent many years loving the
outdoors. While continuing her nursing career, she and Dennis started their own
business, Call of the Wild Fishing & Fur, where she often handcrafted
unique accessories late into the night. Later, Judy discovered her love of
quilting and created many beautiful quilts for her family and friends. She
enjoyed attending garage sales and the excitement of auctions with her lifelong
friend, Barb Hawley.
While many things in life brought Judy
joy, nothing got her more excited than her beloved Big Red Football team. She
also was an ardent follower of the Denver Broncos. She adored her grandchildren
and spent most of her time making memories with them.
Judy joins her father, Joseph V.
Schmitz, and her siblings, Patricia Schmitz-Petersen and Joseph V. Schmitz II,
in heaven.

Stephen,
Lana Stephen, nee Bogdanow
Source: The Daytona Beach [Florida] News-Journal - Saturday, March 1, 2008
Lana Bogdanow Stephen, a resident of
Daytona Beach, Fla., since 1948, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at the
age of 88.
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, to Lena and
Pavel Alexey Bogdanow, Lana graduated from Central High School. She received
her nursing degree from St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital School of Nursing,
achieving the highest score of those tested for licensing that year from the
Iowa Board of Nursing. She moved to the Detroit, Mich., area where she provided
private duty nursing services and served as nurse and office manager to a
general surgeon in Bloomfield Hills. It was there she met her true love and
future husband, James R. Stephen, who predeceased her in 1986. Inspired by her
father and unbeknownst to all but her family and closest friends, she was truly
a modern version of the Renaissance woman. Her photographic memory never forgot
any poem or literature she loved and learned and from which she would readily
recite for her and others' enjoyment. Her musical talents led her to learn how
to play several musical instruments, to perform in her high school a cappella
choir and her nursing school choir, to perform in many school plays and
musicals, and to teach her children to appreciate and enjoy every style and
form of musical performance. Her artistic ability and study of all things
beautiful was evident in the making of exquisite clothing in her younger days,
her needlework, and her choice of colors, fabrics and fine art in her décor.
Her creative and delicious cooking for family and friends and her appreciation
of gourmet food prepared by family, friends and professional chefs was one of
her greatest pleasures, especially when accompanied by a fine champagne. She
loved geography, history, and travel and made many trips abroad. She was a passionate
gardener, avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge. She valued education above
all pursuits and supported and applauded the academic achievements of all she
knew and loved. A few of her many roles in the community included being a
sustaining member of the Junior League and a member of the Museum of Arts and
Science, and formerly a member of Palmettes. She was active in PTA at the
schools her children attended in addition to supporting their various
extracurricular activities. She proudly supported her husband's numerous
entrepreneurial projects, which led them first to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and
then to Daytona Beach, Fla., where her husband was, for over thirty years, the
local Pontiac dealer and also was selected by Mercedes Benz as their local
dealer. The Stephens were among the original families supporting the building
of Westminster-By-The-Sea Presbyterian Church, and participated together in
numerous charitable, cultural, and civic organizations. From their earliest
days in Daytona, they both actively and enthusiastically supported and
participated in the development and growth of NASCAR and the International
Speedway Corporation.
She is survived by her eldest sister,
Vera Bogdanow; her elder daughter, Diane Stephen Brown and her husband Walter;
her son, James R. Stephen, Jr.; her younger daughter, Dr. Susan Stephen
Glander, M.D. and her husband Christopher; her grandchildren, Brooke Brown
Helmstetter and her husband William, Lindsey Michelle Graham, and Michael
Stephen Glander; and her great-grandchildren, Hadley Jane and William Graham
Helmstetter; her sister-in-law, Emma Stephen Besancon; and her nieces and
nephews.
A Memorial Service in celebration of
her life will be held at Westminster By The Sea Presbyterian Church, 3223 South
Peninsula Drive, Daytona Beach Shores, Fla., today (Monday, March 3rd), at 3

Morgantown - State Police detectives are investigating a deadly shooting
early Saturday morning in northwest Brown County.
Richard
Voland died Sunday night at Methodist Hospital from gunshot wounds he suffered
during a home invasion between midnight and 5 a.m. Saturday. The 84-year-old
Voland and his 77-year-old wife, Mary, were taken to the hospital after the
shooting at the couple's home on Lick Creek Road in Morgantown.
Police say the victims were asleep when the armed
suspects broke into their home and shot them.
"Everybody knows everybody out there," said ISP Sgt. Curt Durnil.
"This is shocking to us, not only because of the suspects' ages, but
because of the elderly couple's ages."
The
older of two suspects being sought by police is described as being 18-20 years
old with dark hair and olive or dark complected skin. The younger male was
described as being 14-16 years old with blond or light red hair and a light
complexion. Both males were said to be clean-shaven.
"One of the elderly victims was able to talk to investigators about
their description and what they look like and near what time it happened,"
said Sgt. Durnil. "So they did give us a description. The victim also gave
us some information that the older male probably has a wound on one of his
arms."
Detectives are pursuing a number of leads in the ongoing investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Indiana State Police in
Bloomington at (812) 332-4411 or 1-800-423-1286 or the Brown County Sheriff's

HELMSBURG —
A Brown County man was killed, and his wife suffered serious gunshot wounds
after two assailants invaded their home, state police said.
The attack
happened between midnight Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday at the residence of
Richard W. and Mary I. Voland of 8406 Lick Creek Road near Helmsburg in
northwestern Brown County.
Richard
Voland, 84, died Sunday night at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Mary
Voland, 77, was in fair condition.
Police said
they have not determined why the suspects entered the home.
Indiana
State Police Sgt. Curt Durnil said the house contained valuable items most
homeowners would own, but the attackers did not ransack the house. Police are
searching for two suspects based on victim descriptions. After the shootings,
Mary Voland drove about a quarter mile to her brother’s house to call 911, said
Voland’s sister-in-law, Elaine Richards. “It’s pitiful that people are that
mean,” Richards said about the attack. Richards said the Volands had been
married “all their (adult) lives.”
They built
their Lick Creek Road house on land Mary Voland’s parents once owned and have
lived there for about 60 years, Richards said.
Richard
Voland was retired from Eli Lilly, where he worked at least part of the time as
a plumber.
Mary Voland
“baked a lot for people” and had worked in a bank, Richards said.

Arrests Made
In Brown County Murder, Details To Come This Afternoon
(NASHVILLE) - A development is expected to be
announced later this afternoon about the murder case in Brown County.
State police have been investigating the shooting
death of Richard "Dude" Voland and the assault of his wife, Mary, in
November of last year.
State police in Bloomington have announced a press
conference for 1:30 this afternoon at the brown county sheriff's department.
Two people have been arrested for the murder and assault.
One of the people arrested is 17-year-old Bennie Reed
of Morgantown who is currently facing preliminary charges of murder, burglary
of a residence, robbery and battery.
The other individual, is, as of now, only described as
a younger male with the same last name.
[Submitter’s Note:

NASHVILLE
A judge will determine later this month if a
13-year-old will be charged as an adult for participating in the November
killing of an 84-year-old Brown County man and slashing the man’s 77-year-old
wife’s throat with a knife from her kitchen.
Blade Reed, who just last year was a sixth-grader at
Helmsburg Elementary School, is being held without bond at the Johnson County
Juvenile Justice Facility in Franklin for what police say was his role in the
attack that left Richard “Dude” Voland dead and his wife seriously hurt.
He appeared Monday in a closed juvenile court hearing,
where Nashville attorney James Roberts was appointed as a public defender to
represent him in future court proceedings.
The next is set for 1 p.m. Jan. 30, where Brown
Circuit Judge Judith Stewart will hear evidence and determine if the boy should
be tried as an adult.
Mary Voland, a feisty woman known for baking pies and
slaying rattlesnakes in her day, survived being shot in the abdomen and also
having her throat cut.
From her hospital bed, she described the older youth
for a composite sketch artist. She told investigators that the younger of the
two assailants who forced their way into her home was so young she didn’t think
he was old enough to shave.
He wore a glow-in-the-dark hockey mask during much of
the attack.
Blade Reed’s older brother, 17-year-old Ben “Bennie”
Kenneth Reed, was charged in court Friday with felony murder, attempted murder,
conspiracy to commit murder, attempted robbery resulting in serious injury,
burglary, two counts of aggravated battery, two counts of battery with a deadly
weapon and two counts of theft.
He
told Stewart he has no income and little education, having completed just the
eighth grade. She appointed Nashville attorney Andy Szakaly as his public
defender.
He
apparently had been living in Bloomington the past few years with an adult
sister because of a falling out with his father, James Reed. But he told police
he had returned to the Reed home on Lick Creek Road in Helmsburg, about a mile
south of the Voland house on the same road. He said he had been living with his
mother, Mary, at the residence but that he had hidden from his father because
they did not get along. A police affidavit describing what happened at the
Voland home in the early morning hours of Nov. 15 says the Reed brothers rode
their bicycles there and lied their way in when Dude Voland came to the door by
saying they needed to call someone to come and get them. When Bennie Reed
pulled out a gun, Voland did the same and shot the teen in the upper left arm.
Reed responded by firing back and striking Voland in the head. According to
police and Reed’s own statement, he then shot Mary Voland as her husband lay
bleeding on the living room floor and she was applying pressure and first aid
to Reed’s gunshot wounds. Police who interviewed him Dec. 30 noticed two
dime-sized wounds on his upper arm, consistent with a bullet going through the
arm as Mary Voland had described. Police took his fingerprints, and a week
later matched one to a print found on the Voland’s bathroom medicine chest,
where Reed had gotten hydrogen peroxide and other first aid supplies. Bennie Reed told police he was intoxicated
and that he didn’t know why he had gone to the elderly couple’s home. “He
thought he might have gone to the Voland house to obtain more alcohol,” the
police affidavit states. Police say he used a Colt .25-caliber handgun stolen
from another neighbor’s home. Alcohol was taken in that break-in, and a bullet
was fired into a wall. Mary Voland told police that the younger boy pulled a
ski mask over his face, stood behind her and cut her throat with a knife. Blade
Reed said his brother took him aside, handed him a knife and told him he had to
kill the woman because she was a witness. Ninety minutes after they entered the
Voland house, the boys said they gathered up first aid supplies, the stolen
handgun, Voland’s gun, the telephone handset and a bloody washcloth Mary Voland
used to clean Reed’s gunshot wounds. They buried some of the items near a creek
at their house. The next day, James Reed discovered a bloody washcloth in the
garage where the boys’ bicycles are stored. Police confiscated it later. It matched
those in the linen closet at the Voland home.

Teen gets 60 years in murder of man, 84, and attack on
wife
NASHVILLE -- One of two teenage brothers charged in the shooting death
of an 84-year-old man at his rural Central Indiana home has been sentenced to
60 years in prison.
Bennie
Reed, 17, was sentenced Monday in Brown Circuit Court on charges of murder and
aggravated battery. Reed pleaded guilty
last month in the November attack that killed Richard Voland and left his
77-year-old wife, Mary, with gunshot and knife wounds.
Reed
said he and his 13-year-old brother, Blade Reed, bicycled to the Volands' rural
Helmsburg home to steal beer.
Prosecutors say the brothers pulled handguns. Voland's gun fired during a struggle,
wounding Bennie Reed, who then shot Voland in the head.
Adult charges of murder and robbery are
pending against Blade Reed.

Boy, 14, won't face murder charges
NASHVILLE -- Prosecutors have dropped murder charges against a 14-year-old

84-year-old man and badly injured his wife at their Brown County home.
Blade
Reed pleaded guilty Thursday in Brown Circuit Court to an adult charge of
attempted robbery with serious bodily injury.
A plea agreement calls for a 30-year prison sentence.
He also
admitted guilt to a juvenile battery charge for cutting 77-year-old Mary
Voland's throat during the November 2008 attack at their home near Helmsburg.
Bennie Reed, 17, has been sentenced to 60

JUDGE TO
MAKE DECISION IN
FATAL ROBBERY CASE
Source: The Indianapolis [Indiana Star]; by Jason
Thomas; 2009
NASHVILLE, Ind. -- A Brown County judge will determine
next week whether a 13-year-old accused in the shooting death of an elderly
Brown County man will be tried in adult court.
The boy's fate is tied to a state law
that presumes a person 10 or older accused of murder should be waived to adult
court. But the law also provided for an
exemption -- if it's proved that it's in the best interests of the defendant
and the community for the accused to stay in the juvenile justice system.
The 13-year-old and his 17-year-old
brother are accused in the slaying of 84-year-old Richard Voland in November,
allegedly after they forced their way into Voland's rural home.
Court documents state that during the
robbery, the 17-year-old gave a knife to his younger brother, who cut Voland's
wife, Mary, in the neck. . . . *
