Iola Maye (Orme) Hedinger was born
December 12, 1927, on the family farm south of Nodaway, IA. Iola was the
daughter of William (Bill) Orme and Rosena (Moser) Orme. She grew up attending

in rural Adams County after graduation. On December 25, 1946, Iola was united
in marriage to Russell Paul Hedinger at the Nodaway United Methodist Church.
Two children were born to bless this union, Susan Elaine and Lonnie Gene.
Russell and Iola farmed in Adams County
all of their married lives. Iola was a 'true farmer's wife' and worked with
Russell on the farm, enjoying the lifestyle farming provided their family. They
loved attending church together and working in the garden. Iola taught piano
lessons to several neighborhood children. She also taught Sunday school and
Bible school. Iola spent many hours canning and freezing the produce from the
family garden. She also loved being active in politics. Iola had been a member

Vonnie
Virgene (Johnston) Hedinger was born October 5, 1922, on a farm near Mount
Etna, the daughter of David Johnston and Geneva (Westfall) Johnston. She grew
up attending rural schools, graduating from the Corning High School with the
Class of 1940. She then attended the University of Northern IA in Cedar Falls,
graduating with a Normal Teacher Training Certificate in 1947. Vonnie taught in
the primary grades in both Corning and Bedford rural schools, staying with
various families in the area. During this time, Vonnie spent a great deal of
time with her sister Daily. Most people thought they were more like twins than
just sisters! Vonnie accepted a position in Corning to teach at the new Craft
building, a move that made it possible for her to be near her mother. On
December 26, 1955, she was united in marriage to Albert John Hedinger in Mount
Etna, Iowa.
Vonnie
was active in her church teaching Sunday school and Bible School for many
years. She attended the Mount Zion Presbyterian Church until its closing, she
and Albert then returned to the church she attended as a child, Church of the
Brethren, where she was still a member. Vonnie was also a member of the
Knitting Club. She was a dedicated, perfectionist seamstress, sewing her own
wedding dress and creating over 100 Care Bears! She also loved to raise a large
garden, canning the produce and sharing them with her family and friends.
Vonnie took great pride in her family and grandchildren. She was known for her
many crafts, along with her collection of cookbooks and sewing supplies.
Left
to cherish Vonnie's memory is a daughter, Kristy Richards and husband Allen of
Corning; a son, Jeff Hedinger and wife Becky of Corning; grandsons, Adam and
Andrew Hedinger; step-grandchildren, Doug and Missy Richards; Susan and Joe
Brown and Curtis Richards; a step-great-grandson, Bryce; two sisters, Daily
Allison and husband Darrel; and Eunice Beck; two sister-in-laws, Naomi Johnston

Familiar face
at food pantry
dies at 61
OCALA - Just last week Susan Houck talked
about how she hated to think that a child might not have food to eat. She
always hoped when donations came in to the Help Agency of the Forest that there
would be a few snacks, like popcorn, for the children, that could be tucked in
the boxes of food the agency gave to needy families.
Houck ran the food pantry off State Road
40 in the Forest that she and her son started 15 years ago. But Houck's
familiar face will not be at the Help Agency when the doors open today. She
died of liver failure Monday night at Munroe Regional Medical Center.
"There's a hole out here
now," said Sarah Fletcher, Houck's friend and a 10-year volunteer at the
Help Agency. "She never turned down anybody. Sometimes she spent her own
money on them."
Fletcher said that Houck, who could be
stubborn at times, was known throughout the Forest community and helped
everyone she possibly could.
"I am a better person for knowing
her, that's for sure," Fletcher said, fighting back tears. "We lost
an angel here, but God certainly got one in heaven."
Houck, 61, was born in Pittsburgh and
moved to West Virginia, where she spent her childhood. As an older teen, she
moved to Bradenton. She married David Eugene "Gene" Houck, 41 years
ago. The family moved to Ocala in 1981.
"We grew up very poor," said
the couple's son, David Houck. "Dad was hurt when I was 8 years old. We
lost pretty much what we had. When we moved up here in '81, we had absolutely
nothing and my parents still gave everything away."
"It is the spirit of giving that marked Susan Houck's life and
influenced her son, a nationally appointed missionary paid by the Assemblies of
God church in Springfield, Mo"People know her as the Christmas Lady,"
David Houck said. "At Christmas time, we didn't give two toys to a kid. We
gave them a whole Christmas. We did that for 500 kids."
The children never knew the gifts came
from the Help Agency.
Children were central to Houck's life.
"I am an only child, but I have a
lot of brothers and sisters," David Houck said. "I think at one time
we had 13 children in my house."
He said his mother raised her youngest
sister and her children.
"We basically raised cousins,
nephews and family friends," he said.
One cousin, Roland Briggs, came to live
in the Houck household when he was 5 years old.
"He's, basically, my
brother," David Houck said.
Susan and Gene Houck's work also
involved helping people. They would move in with disabled or elderly people and
care for them, David Houck said.
Pastor Tony David of the Faith Family
Fellowship church in the Forest sat with Susan Houck on the Forest Advisory
Board and sent people who needed help to the Help Agency.
"I have known the family for
years," David said. "She was a very loving person, a very kind
person. She was concerned about people."
David said the Help Agency is important
to the community. "That's what we have been trying to do out here in the
Forest - what can we do to make this community better. Sue has been somebody on
the front lines doing that. We were very blessed to have her out here."
David Houck said he will become more
involved in the day-to-day operations of the Help Agency. The organization will
be open today, but will be closed Friday.
A service will be held for Susan Houck
at 6 p.m. Friday at the Ocklawaha Bridge Baptist Church.

Evansville couple
dies of CO
poisoning
Evansville police say a man and a woman
have been found dead in a home on Carolina Avenue, north of Diamond Avenue.
It's believed to be a case of carbon
monoxide poisoning.
Officers say an employer called to say
one of the victims had not showed up for work, that's when police went to the
home for a welfare check.
It was then they found the bodies of
James and Phyllis Kisner.
Police say power to the house had been
turned off and the couple had been using a generator inside the house.
"Basically, those portable
generators need to be on the outside of the residence. I mean, they release
carbon monoxide which is obviously deadly. They definitely do not need to be
inside of a residence like this one was," said Sergeant Josh Wittmer with
the Evansville Police Department.
The carbon monoxide levels were so high
in the home several officers had to be treated at the scene.
Police believe the Kisners died
Wednesday.

James M. Kisner Jr. of Evansville,
Ind., passed away on June 26, 2008 — too young at 61 years of age.
James was born on March 26, 1947, in
Evansville, Ind. He grew up in Evansville and attended Bosse High School. At
Bosse, James distinguished himself by winning a national writing contest. In
1965, James moved to Bloomington, Ind., to attend Indiana University, where he
would earn an undergraduate degree and also a Master of Arts degree in English.
At Bloomington, James met his first wife and mother of his children, Carole
Kleckner. They were married in Bloomington in 1969. In the spring of 1977,
James became the proud father of a set of boy-girl twins, James the III and
Jayne Marie. James would later return to his roots in Evansville, Ind., in
1999. He met his second wife, Phyllis, working as a security guard at the
Whirpool plant in Evansville.
In the early years of his career, James
held various positions as a creative and account executive at advertising
agencies in Evansville and Indianapolis. However, he began writing part time as
an ad man and eventually left the profession to dedicate himself
to writing full time. In 1981, James became a published novelist for the first
time with his mystery novel, Nero's Vice. He would
quickly follow up in 1982 with another thriller called Slice of Life.
One of his most widely acclaimed short
stories (and perhaps his first published foray into the horror genre), The
Litter (1987), appeared in the anthology Masques II. The collection also
featured short stories by well-known masters of horror Stephen King, Richard
Matheson and Richard Bloch. His third book, Strands (1988), began a series of
novels in the horror genre that would not end until his last book. Throughout
his writing career, James published 11 novels under his own name as well as
pseudonyms including Martin James and Eric Flanders. His final novel, Tower of
Evil, was published in 1994, and was an homage to time he spent working as a
security guard watching over the Indiana National Bank tower in downtown
Indianapolis, Ind.
James was preceded in death by his
mother, Norma. He is survived by his son, James M. Kisner III; his daughter,
Jayne Kendall, M.D.; his brother, Dan; his father, James Sr.; his half
brothers, John and Ronald; and his twin grandchildren, Jackson and Claire
Kendall.
Memorial services for James and his
wife, Phyllis, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 30th, 2008 at Browning

will be held at Browning Funeral Home from noon to 3 p.m. on Monday, June 30th,
